Ocean Yacht Systems to supply thruster for Fitzroy Yachts next Dubois 50m sailing yacht (Project G50)

June 28, 2011

Ocean Yacht Systems (OYS) based in Christchurch UK, have secured a second contract to supply the thrusters on the next Dubois 50m sailing yacht to be built at Fitzroy Yachts, New Zealand.

OYS have previously supplied bow and stern thrusters to the award winning 50m superyacht Zefira. After successful commissioning and trials on board S/Y Zefira in Auckland, the second Dubois 50m sailing yacht (Project G50) planned for build at the Yard was also awarded to OYS.

OYS has supplied 2 x 99kW (133hp) custom hydraulic swing thrusters for the Fitzroy Yachts 50m Flybridge Sloop G50. The unique thrusters are designed to be highly efficient as well as being mechanically locked in place when raised. When retracted there is little evidence of the thruster at all, leaving behind a completely faired hull providing minimal drag and optimising the sailing experience of these performance orientated superyachts.

“We find their (OYS’s) attitude and approach to business to be outstanding amongst our many suppliers,” comments Rodney Martin, MD for Fitzroy Yachts, “We want to keep OYS as the thruster of choice for our yachts and our plan is to recommend future clients to accept OYS as our preferred equipment.”

The 50 Dubois ‘Project G50’ is currently well underway at Fitzroy Yachts with launch planned in 2012.

Sailing Yacht Antares III was built by Yachting Developments in less than 400 days, this is an unprecedented build time for such a high quality custom Sailing Superyacht.

Built to comply with stringent Germanischer Lloyd and MCA classification requirements,  S/Y Antares III is incredibly strong yet 25%-30% lighter than similar vessels built in Aluminum, this is achievable by the use of composites. The composite structure is post cure epoxy Eglass/Carbon/Kevlar incorporating high strength foam sandwich technology. The hull has a Kevlar outer skin giving increased impact resistance.

Blonde Teak interior as designed by Rhoades Young Design was built in-house by Yachting Developments specialist tradesmen with a horizontal grain and is contrasted with wide Walnut planked floors.

Yacht Antares III sports a state of art carbon fibre mast, furling carbon boom and carbon fibre standing rigging, all were manufactured in NZ by Southern Spars, and the sails were manufactured by North Sails NZ.

In the coming months the vessel and owner will be taking advantage of the South Pacific build location with planned cruises throughout  New Zealand, Fiji and other Pacific Islands before heading to the northern hemisphere.

Yachting Developments is a 100% privately owned New Zealand Company; based in the new Hobsonville marine precinct.  The company which has been in business for 20 years has grown from small beginnings and is currently employing 140 staff plus contractors.  Other projects underway at Yachting Developments include the major refit of the iconic 130ft (40m) J Boat Endeavour and the construction of a new Warwick designed 100’ sailing catamaran Q5

The company has regularly exhibited at the Monaco Yacht Show and Ft Lauderdale International boat shows for the past 9 years and is looking forward to exhibiting at this year’s show once again.

More About South Pacific Yacht Charters:

A yacht charter vacation in the South Pacific Islands (Tahiti, Tonga, Fiji, New Caledonia, and Vanuatu) was once a treasure experienced by only a dedicated few. The Pacific Islands and their people are unique in culture and tradition. The most obvious thing each island has in common is the islanders’ friendly and hospitable nature whereby visitors arriving on sailing charters, are treated as honoured guests. A superyacht charter vacation in Tahiti, French Polynesia, is the best way to explore the ‘jewel of the South Pacific’. It really is the most beautiful place in the world and the only way to completely appreciate the Islands of Tahiti, is by water. A crewed luxury yacht will provide you with a unique opportunity to explore the Tahitian Islands, which are otherwise, difficult to get around. Charter guests have been captured by the beauty and romance of Tahiti, time and time again. Tahiti is a French archipelago, which lies in the middle of the Pacific Ocean roughly between Australia and America, officially known as the Society Islands. Fiji is also a beautiful place for a yacht charter holiday. Imagine white sandy beaches, aquamarine water and swaying palms trees. Many areas of the Fijian Islands are inaccessible to tourism because of their remoteness, which gives yachts a real scope for adventure in these waters….read more about South Pacific Yacht Charters.

Emirates Team New Zealand testing rather than racing

June 03, 2011

Emirates Team New Zealand has decided on the South Island in the winter rather than tropical Fiji  for the next phase of testing sails, systems and crew training on the Volvo Ocean Race yacht CAMPER.

Skipper Chris Nicholson decided today to withdraw from the Auckland-Musket Cove race which starts at Auckland  tomorrow in favour of a voyage to Lyttelton and back.

Volvo Ocean Race yacht CAMPER - Emirates Team New Zealand

Nicholson said the sailing team needed several days of down-wind and reaching conditions to test sails. “We had expected to get that on the way to and from Fiji and we would be able to combine racing and testing. Our weather team says there will be head winds for most of the trip to Fiji and a big chance of head winds on the way back to Auckland.

“We did plenty of up-wind work on the tour of New Zealand in early May and we were on the wind from Lyttelton to Three Kings Islands north of North Cape when we did the 2000 nautical mile qualifier.

“We collected an enormous amount of data over the three weeks and we don’t need to repeat it. We lack data on downwind and reaching so in view of the forecast we are heading south.”

CAMPER will start with the Fiji fleet at noon on Saturday and will peel off towards the Bay of Plenty. The yacht expects to make Lyttelton on Monday where a decision on the direction of the remainder of the voyage will be made in light of an updated weather forecast

Emirates Team New Zealand  managing director Grant Dalton, a veteran of seven round-the-world races,  was going to race to Fiji on the VO70.

“We wanted to support the Fiji race and advance CAMPER’s preparation for the Volvo Ocean Race at the same time,” he said. “We won’t get the race experience but we will get a lot of testing done.”

Auckland International Boat Show

Auckland International Boat Show

In designing the Superyacht Captains Forum, the New Zealand NZ Marine Export Group canvassed the captains of superyachts which were cruising and undergoing refits in New Zealand. The captains rated piracy, planning and managing a successful refit, and destination cruising in the New Zealand and the South Pacific as major topics for the agenda.

The forum will be ideal preparation for taking superyachts to New Zealand in the 2011/12 summer to cruise the idyllic New Zealand coastline, compete in the NZ Millennium Cup between 16 and 18 February and enjoy the Volvo Ocean Race Auckland stopover in March-April 2012.

Other topics at the forum will include: International banking, tax optimisation and foreign exchange; Fundamentals of contract management; International security and piracy; Your say: creating the ultimate superyacht facility; Tenders and toys: the latest innovations. Delegates who register early will qualify for an earlybird discount.

Another major attraction of the event will be the opportunity to network within the superyacht industry. Social activities will include a welcome function on Wednesday, 14 September, an interactive visit to the Giant Rugby Ball and conference dinner at The Cloud at Auckland Party Central.

On Friday, the captains will swap dinner wear for sailing gear to race in the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s MRX fleet before relaxing over a friendly Kiwi barbecue.

Interested participants of the Superyacht Captains Forum may also sign up for the NZ Marine National Yards Tour which will connect interested international visitors with selected marine companies such as superyacht builders, sparmakers and sail makers.

The Superyacht Captains Forum will be held in the new Viaduct Events Centre, during the Auckland International Boat Show, also based in the centre. On the Saturday, a major international crowd puller will be the International Boatbuilding Competition in which teams of ex-patriots working in the New Zealand marine industry compete to build catamarans in 90 minutes, before racing them on the water.

Yacht sales & attendance figures boom at Auckland New Zealand Boat Show

May 17, 2011

Smuggler Marine co-owner Pauline Pringle echoed the thoughts of many when she declared, three-quarters of the way through this year’s Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show in Auckland: “The recession is over.”Pringle made the comment while accepting the GRP Fishing Boat Under 6 Metres Award at this year’s Boating NZ/NZ Fishing News Boat of the Show Awards Evening.

She was clearly responding to a level of both sales and genuine inquiry unseen since the heady days of the mid 1990s. After two very difficult years, New Zealand boat owners appeared willing to shrug off their recent frugalness and once again invest in a boating lifestyle.

New Zealand Boat Show Auckland

Seacraft Miller Moyes managing director, Lionel Sands, who was inducted into the show’s Hall of Fame during the Awards Evening, says the company sold more than a million dollars’ worth of their Haines Hunter boats at the show. He says a “significant” percentage of these were of the company’s new SS725 Sport Sedan and SP725 Sport Pursuit models, the latter of which won the show’s coveted Boat for the Show: Overall Winner award.

Another Boat of the Show award winner, Tony Hembrow from Rayglass Boats, also reported very strong sales, “well beyond expectations”. In his case, the sales appeared mainly spread across both the company’s new model Legend 2200 and their existing Legend 2500, both of which also won Boat of the Show Awards.

The buoyant sales were not restricted to the show’s GRP models either. Several leading aluminium manufacturers also enjoyed great success. Brian Firman from Napier’s Profile Boats believed he sold the first boat of the show, a Profile 650, in the first hour after the gates opened on Thursday.

Steve McLay, from McLay Boats in Milton, South Otago, reported selling six boats over the four days of the show, including his new award-winning 690. He expects this to double after sea trails and further discussions with potential buyers.

Whakatane’s Extreme Boats also enjoyed an “incredibly successful” show. Owner Glenn Shaw says the company will end up selling between 20 and 25 boats after checking trade-in boats and taking buyers for a sea trial. Shaw says he was also amazed at the amount interest in the company’s bigger and more highly featured boats.

“For example, we sold five of our new Extreme 850 Game King model,” he says. “We offer this in a variety of different ways, with varying options. This means an entry level version of the 850 costs about $160,000 while a top-of-the-line model goes for around $220,000.

“All of the five we sold at the show were right at the very top of that curve.”

Marine dealers, who have certainly had a very hard time over the last few years, also had reason to smile.

Peter Carlson from East Tamaki based Family Boats, enjoyed his best boat show since 2005, while Nigel Arkell, from Albany’s Rogers Boatshop, says his company definitely noticed a significant upward trend over recent shows, with a substantially better quality of inquiry.

Major retailers at the show also reported huge increases in sales; in some cases, over 250% more than at the 2010 show.

Interest in boating among the general public was also at a several year high with attendance figures for the 2011 Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show up an estimated 15%. This was despite the show only having one late night instead of the traditional two.

Buoyed by both the significant increase in attendance and the success of the exhibitors, Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show general manager Dave Gibbs says he is already planning the 2012 show.

“This year’s show was completely sold out well in advance,” he says. “We ended up with a waiting list of more than a dozen companies.

“That’s certainly not going to change for 2012. We have already been approached by a number of exhibitors wanting to secure even larger stand areas for next year.”

The 2012 Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show will be held at the ASB Showgounds in Greenlane Auckland on May 17-20.

Gate prize winners:

The winner of the Extreme/Yamaha Boat Show Package was Rebecca Berry from Pukekohe. She won a just release Extreme 540 Sports Fisher, complete with Yamaha 70hp four stroke outboard, Raymarine A57D GPS chartplotter and digital fishfinder; Ray 49 VHF radio; Jabsco high pressure wash down pump, four Hutchwilco lifejackets, a flare pack and a specially designed multi-roller, self-centring Extreme trailer.

The show also gave away a $3000 Viking Kayak Package every day.

These consisted of a high-featured Viking Profish 400 kayak with numerous extras as well as a Hutchwilco personal flotation device and a C-Tug kayak trolley.

The four winners were Ray Chamberlin from Howick; Jim Harvey from Maraetai; Jody Robb from Cockle Bay and Trent Dunn from Mairangi Bay.

The 30 metre Superyacht Antares III yacht launched by Yachting Developments in New Zealand

May 12, 2011

Yachting Developments New Zealand have now launched their sailing yacht Antares III superyacht in Auckland. The 100 foot / 30 m sloop superyacht Antares III – formerly known as project Meteor and Hull YD 69 – was designed by Bill Dixon, of Dixon Yacht Design, and her interior was created by Rhoades Young. The S/Y Antares III yacht was built in New Zealand for and experience sailing yacht owner who has owned three previous boats. The first Antares was Royal Huisman 40m ketch which was constructed using Alustar aluminum. Rhoades Young were also commissioned to design this yacht’s interior and Bill Dixon was also her designer.

Yachting Developments launched the 100 ft composite performance cruising sloop ‘Antares III’ from their yard in Auckland. This luxury yacht was constructed to comply with stringent Germanischer Lloyd and MCA classification requirements. The yacht’s modern underwater shape includes a high-aspect carbon fibre rudder with direct quadrant non-assisted steering which has been designed to produce absolute feel to her helmsman.

It is a testament to the Kiwi composite yacht building company that the 30 metre luxury yacht Antares III was built and launched in around 12 months. After some further fine tuning and sea trials the new superyacht will be handed over to her owners who plan to cruise the South Pacific.

Yachting Developments New Zealand

Due to her advanced composite structure, she is a very strong sailing yacht which is nevertheless 25% to 30% lighter than similar vessels built in materials such as aluminium. The composite structure is post cure epoxy E glass/Carbon/Kevlar which integrates high strength foam sandwich hull technology. Her hull also boasts a Kevlar outer skin for outstanding impact resistance at sea.
