New Zealand Prime Minister opens Auckland International Boat Show

September 15, 2011

The Right Honourable John Key opened the 13th Auckland International Boat Show at a function in the new Viaduct Events Centre on the evening of Wednesday, 14 September. It is believed to be the first time, a boat show in New Zealand has been opened by a prime minister.

The audience included marine industry representatives and members of the international superyacht arena, who have come to attend the inaugural Superyacht Captains Forum.

Taking the lead from MC Peter Montgomery, whose introduction had referred to his famous line: “The America’s Cup is now New Zealand’s Cup,” Mr Key expressed the wish to see a new version: “The Rugby World Cup is now New Zealand’s Cup.”

Mr Key highlighted the research and development that makes the New Zealand marine industry an ongoing success on the world stage and said his Government was committed to supporting it. To the superyacht captains he said, “We encourage you to bring your owners to New Zealand.”

The newly developed Viaduct Harbour is proving popular with boat show visitors and exhibitors, says Terry Bailey, who imports Arvor Boats from Europe.

“I’m excited about the show,” he says. “People have commented on the improved flow through the pavilions and the on-water marina. The venue is fantastic.”

The Auckland International Boat Show has more than 200 yachts, launches and trailerboats on display, including a stunning new 55ft cruiser-racer, Equilibrium, designed by Botin Carkeek Yacht Design and built by Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders. She is built in carbon with a carbon mast, with twin helms and a lifting keel.

Another stunner and one of the biggest boats of the show is the 75ft, 40-tonne displacement powercat, Bucket List, exhibited by Alan and Karen Percy of Fibreglass Concepts in Whangarei. Powered by twin C12 705hp Caterpillar engines running through vee drives, the luxury vessel was designed by Steve Ekman and has five bathrooms, three helmstations, four decks and berths for 13 people.

Adventurous-minded visitors to the boat show will be inspired by the bright orange rowboat, Moana, due to embark on a bridge to bridge Tasman crossing from Sydney Harbour Bridge to Auckland Harbour Bridge, powered by the four-man Team Gallagher.

The team has received generous support from companies throughout the New Zealand marine industry, many of which are exhibiting at the show.

This campaign aims to be the first team to row the Tasman Sea from west to east and the only human-powered vessel to round Cape Reinga.

The bright orange 10.5m Trans-Tasman boat will attempt the 1,400 nautical mile voyage (2,500km) powered by Nigel Cherrie, 35, of Auckland; Martin Berka, 36, of Wellington; Andrew McCowan, 28, Hamilton; and James Blake, son of the late Sir Peter Blake, 24, of Dunedin.

The team will be on standby from Monday 24 October for best weather window to start their adventure, estimated to take between three weeks and three months.

But for those seeking a more leisurely style of boating, there are numerous brands of trailer boats, cruising yachts, ribs and launches on display, plus the Discover Boating to assist newcomers to boating.

Dometic Marine presents HVAC solutions at the 2011 Auckland International Boat Show

September 14, 2011

Dometic Marine distributor, Whiting Power Systems Ltd, presents an extensive range of HVAC (Heating, ventilation and air conditioning) solutions at this year’s Auckland International Boat Show in New Zealand. Products on display for the first time include Dometic’s Emerald Split Air Conditioning System and award-winning In-Duct Breathe Easy™ Air Purifier.

Emerald Split System
Comprising of the Emerald Condenser and the Emerald Evaporator, the new split system has been engineered to use R410A environmentally safe refrigerant. Fully compliant with International green gas standards, the thermodynamic properties of R410A enabled Dometic engineers to increase system efficiency by using fewer amps per capacity.

Based on Dometic’s cutting-edge air conditioning technology, the systems have been designed and refined to maximise performance and durability. The Emerald Split System Series provides increased efficiency by using fewer amps per capacity and offers a refined, quieter system that maximizes performance and durability. The system provides up to 17.5% more cooling capacity and its rotary compressor reduces amperage by up to 40% compared to older counterparts.

In-Duct Breathe Easy
The In-Duct Breathe Easy Air Purifier, which was awarded the highly acclaimed IBEX Innovation Award in the Mechanical Systems category at IBEX 2010, is specifically designed to work within the ducting of a yacht’s air conditioning system. Operating silently, it purifies and cleanses air using Photocatalytic Nano-Mesh Technology with UV light. Each time the air circulates it is further purified.

The unit takes up little space and if retrofitted will require no alterations to be made to the vessel’s existing air conditioning unit. There is no need for any mounting hardware as a section of the A/C ducting is cut out and the circular In-Duct Breathe Easy tube simply inserted, then the ducting is reattached to it. The Breathe Easy is available in sizes to match all standard duct diameters.

The In-Duct Breathe Easy has been proven by independent test consultancy, Environmental Diagnostics Laboratory to reduce the presence of harmful mould spores and other contaminants and odours by up to 100%. Inhaled mould is acknowledged by leading experts as a key contributor to health issues such as eye and respiratory tract irritation, sneezing and sore throats.

The new hardtop, targa and hull windows have enhanced aesthetics on this extremely popular model with 76 4400 Sport Yachts launched in less than three years.

Riviera’s brand and communications manager Stephen Milne said people have long recognised Riviera’s strong build quality.

“There is a tremendous confidence in the Riviera brand.  We hold a good forward order bank with sales confirmed for both Australian and many international clients.  Our production capability is now solid following a successful Sydney International Boat Show.  This is good news for our 400 strong staff.

“In the US Riviera is extremely well known for our range of Flybridge boats and the new 53 will not disappoint with its impressive list of space age technology and design features and its appeal to the cruising market.”

The Riviera display will be located at C Dock, slips 327, 329 and 331.

SP-High Modulus at Auckland International Boat Show 2011-SE 84 Nano is a next generation carbon prepreg designed to provide enhanced properties that will be most valued by producers of high performance components.

The new high performance prepreg SE 84 Nano has been developed for marine applications where compressive performance is a key requirement. When vacuum bag moulded, SE 84 Nano exhibits a 20% increase in compressive strength compared with SP-High Modulus’ SE 84LV. This is achieved through a combination of SP-High Modulus proprietary formulation technology and 3M™ Matrix Resin. This marriage of technology delivers a significant boost to mechanical properties while maintaining the cure and easy handling characteristics of SE 84LV.

Corecell™ M-Foam is SP-High Modulus’ structural marine foam core, which offers a complete cost-effective package comprising high shear strength, low weight and high elongation, low resin uptake for infusion processes and high temperature stability for prepreg processes. Now the performance leader for all marine applications, Corecell™ M-Foam offers a combination of properties such as chemical resistance, built-in toughness, fine cell size and unique ‘knife-cuts’ (which ensure resin absorption is very low, saving both weight and cost). M-Foam has recently been type approved by Bureau Veritas and Registro Italinano Navale (RINA). These complement its previous accreditations by three awarding organisations including ABS Quality Evaluations, Inc. (ABS QE), Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and Germanischer Lloyd (GL).

The B³ SmartPac solution is a versatile construction solution that helps builders manufacture composite components more efficiently and cost-effectively than ever before. The B³ SmartPac solution comprises of optimised structural design with pre-cut reinforcements and core materials, designed to reduce complexity and cost in production boatbuilding.
