92m Mayan Queen IV in the Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand

Spanning 6 decks, the Mayan Queen IV yacht is listed as the 33rd biggest superyacht in the world and is an impressive site. The yacht has been in New Zealand since September last year and was one of the superyachts berthed in the newly redeveloped Wynyard Quarter in Auckland during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.  The yacht remained in Auckland until early 2012, receiving some maintenance and servicing work.

One of the largest yachts to visit New Zealand in the past 6 years and certainly one of the largest megayachts to grace Queen Charlotte Sound, the M/Y Mayan Queen IV is owned by Mexican billionaire Alberto Bailleres.  Alberto Bailleres chairs Mexico’s second-largest mining company, Industrias Penoles, which one of the world’s largest silver miners.

Mr Bailleres reportedly has a net worth of US$11.9 billion and was ranked at number 66 on Forbes magazine’s March 2011 list of the world’s billionaires.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, owner of the Chelsea Football Club owns the world’s largest superyacht Eclipse, also built by Blohm & Voss which is an imposing 164m (538)  in length.

Before making her way to the Marlborough Sounds, the Mayan Queen IV yacht was also spotted further south in Dunedin, turning heads as it made its way up Otago Harbour to its berth,  having sailed from Fiordland, where it had spent several days before the weather deteriorated. Motor yacht Mayan Queen has now left the Marlborough Sounds and is berthed in Wellington. Hopefully those onboard will enjoy a sunny Waitangi Day and weekend in the Capital.

The World First Two-Man Planing Submarine Q-Sub 2400

The Q-Sub 2400 is capable of travelling at 20 knots on the surface, and diving to a depth of 400 ft. It is made to ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) and GL requirements, and eliminates the logistical problems of conventional submarines which require surface ships for tenders to lift them from the water.

The Q-Sub has been engineered to make submarining as easy and enjoyable as possible. It has the feel of driving an exclusive two-person sports car, comparable to that of a Ferrari, yet has large acrylic side windows for easy viewing of passing sea life and underwater scenery. The unique and lightweight design of the Q-Sub allows it to travel quickly along the surface of the water like a regular speed boat, giving potential for multiple dives at different locations and eliminating the restrictions of other personal submersibles.

Q-Subs Ltd has associations with many other international manufacturers of submarines and is a member of P Subs – an USA based organisation which ‘promotes and encourages discussion of safety, design, construction and operation of personal submersibles’.

Georgia’s original brief described a modern yacht with clean, uncluttered lines. The exterior requirements were for ample spaces for relaxations, hydro-spa, vast sunbathing areas and an al fresco dining area. Stunning views have been created aboard this unique yacht, emphasising visual connections with the outside world.

Accommodation includes a full-beam Owner’s suite and four guests staterooms, as well as an office and a small gymnasium. The main saloon of the superyacht Georgia is very spacious and pleasantly furnished making it an inviting place for all to enjoy and relax in. There is a separate dining area.

Georgia’s performance under sail and under power is exceptional. Her extremely large carbon fibre mast and furling boom system was made by Southern Spars of New Zealand.

At the time of her launch, Alloy Yachts’ Georgia was the largest sloop ever built with the largest carbon fibre mast.

New Zealand Millennium Cup

Racing on the three days of this prestigious event will take place close to shore, in the Waitemata Harbour and inner Hauraki Gulf. This means those on vantage points at Devonport, North Head, Bastion Point, on the East Coast Bays and Whanagaparoa Peninsula, as well as along the Motutapu and Rangitoto shorelines, will be able to see all of the action as these luxurious 30-metre-plus vessels battle for supremacy.

NZ Millennium Cup organisers have designed courses that start and finish off Viaduct Harbour, ensuring there will also be good viewing at both ends of the races for those working in the CBD.

“Those watching, wherever they are, will be treated to a real spectacle,” says organising committee chairman, Stuart Robinson. “These are some of the world’s most spectacular yachts and, when they fly their spinnakers, some will be carrying more than 1000 square metres of sail!

“Most people will never have seen anything like this before!”

Racing in this year’s NZ Millennium Cup will get underway on Thursday, February 16 with a harbour race. This will be followed on Friday and Saturday with races from Viaduct Harbour to the inner Hauraki Gulf islands and back. Racing on the three days gets underway at 11am.

While the NZ Millennium Cup does have an active social component, Robinson stresses that the racing is taken very seriously by the vessels’ owners, their guests and crews, and by the organisers.

“All of the races in the 2012 NZ Millennium Cup will be run by race management experts such as Ross Marwick and Hal Wagstaff from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

“These are the same race management teams that will be in charge a few weeks later, when the Volvo 70 Fleet arrive in Auckland, compete in their inshore race and then head away on the next leg of their race around the world.”

When not racing, the superyacht owners and their guests will be given the chance to experience some of New Zealand’s finest food and wine in a mixture of casual and formal settings. These will range from a “Kiwi bach” themed post-race function in the Floating Pavilion to a formal gala dinner and prizegiving in The Cloud on Princes Wharf, complete with a charity auction to raise money for Coastguard.
