Following the successful 2012 MYS, CharterWorld was invited to view one of Italy’s custom luxury yacht builders and refit facilities, Mondo Marine, providing us with an excellent opportunity to get a glimpse of the great amount of work and dedication that Mondo Marine put into each one of their superyachts, be it a refit, repair or a new build. Amongst their latest luxury new-built vessels is the elegant OKKO, launched in June. Established in 1978 by Ferruccio and Elio Stroppiana, the yard is strategically and very conveniently located in Savona offering its clients world-class construction, repair and refit facilities, excellent know-how, quality workmanship in addition to the favourable factors like the sea area belonging to the yard, the dry land facilities and very well equipped wharf. Explorer yacht MONDO 45 project by Sergio Cutolo for Mondo Marine

September 28, 2012

Monaco Yacht Show 2012 has unveiled another exciting new project from the prestigious Mondo Marine shipyard located in Savona, Italy – the Mondo 45 Explorer Yacht. Featuring naval architecture and exterior design by the well known Engineer Sergio Cutolo, the new Explorer Yacht MONDO 45 Project boasts 45.05 metres in length, a beam of 8.80 metres as well as four spectacular decks. She is a combination between a working hull, an ocean research vessel, a cruising ship as well as a superyacht, with an exceptional exterior design and stylish interior.

At the heart of the new Mondo 45 superyacht project is an owner’s desire to experience the sea in any condition in full comfort. The project combines the formalism of yacht design and the iconographical elements of the explorer. An excellent quality of build is assured by the yard MONDO MARINE. The yard is noted for building the 50-metre expedition yacht TRIBU’, the first explorer vessel to obtain the Green Star certification from the Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) for yachts that minimise their environmental impact thanks to their latest generation plants and systems.

The design philosophy is based on research into maximum functionality at sea and the desire to create a yacht that is perfect for living aboard during long voyages. The result is a mix between a working hull, an ocean research vessel, a cruising ship and a superyacht. The MONDO45 explorer measures 45.05 metres in length – to satisfy the port regulations for yachts below 50 metres – and is 8.80 metres abeam. The hull is in steel and the structure in aluminium.

Mondo45 yacht is built over four decks and is capable of navigating in all seas and types of weather. She can reach a maximum speed of 15 knots and carry 80,000 litres of fuel, offering a range of 6,000 miles – a trip around the world with only three stops.

The iconographic elements of the explorer, as stressed by Engineer Cutolo, have been respected and revised in a modern key to support the functional aspects. The first thing that strikes you about the motor yacht MONDO45 is her exterior profile. The dynamics of the volumes, inspired by work boats, have been smoothed down to an elegant and extremely refined form with a generous use of soft surfaces and continuity, with elements in stainless steel that soften the line of the windows.

The large stern, almost like a naval ship, evokes the drawbridge of a medieval castle – hostile and impenetrable when closed, made to resist the following waves, but which opens wide to offer hospitality when the boat is at anchor. There is a large stair that leads to the charms of the interior or allows the guests access to the sea.

In the spacial relationship between the interior and exterior there are elements that make the project unique. Aboard there is everything you could possibly need to make an extremely comfortable trip around the world – large socialising areas, attention paid to the distribution of space and clever use of lighting aboard. All these elements define the vocation of the yacht as creating a comfortable and relaxed life aboard. MONDO45 yacht, in fact, has a series of large sliding glass doors that give continuity to the spaces, where interior and exterior space develop in harmony without other solutions to provide continuity.

The large lounge on the main deck expands in a fascinating way thanks to semi-circular sliding doors that, at the stern, create continuity between the interior and the exterior areas on deck and the bathing platform.

Literally, the saloon looks our towards the sea and infinity, thanks to two large sliding doors and two terraces, one each side, which extend the space available to guests beyond the borders of the ship.

Even the different levels are planned in a perfectly structured way thanks to the large, symmetric external stairs that are transparent, almost aerial, and flank the large semi-circular doors, giving continuity, also visual, to the various levels of the exterior decks.

The various decks are characterised in function of their destination. The main deck is the large beach, the enormous ‘beach club’ where the guests can interact, choosing to remain protected from the sun or not and with easy access to the water.

The bridge deck is dedicated primarily to navigation. The bow zone has a comfortable divan and the stern area is dominated by the large swimming pool equipped with a current that allows you to swim even with the yacht under way.

In the interior, are four large cabins below decks as well as a comfortable crew area. On the main deck, in addition to the salon, we find the bow area completely dedicated to the owner, with a gym, massage room, sauna, Turkish bath, cabin and large bathroom with a dressing room.

From a technical point of view, the hull is state of the art. It is the result of team work with the Krilov Institute of St. Petersburg which used advanced CFD methods and a series of tank tests. The result is a hull that offers a maximum speed of more than 15 knots and an extended cruising range at lower power.

Stabilisation is from two pairs of electric stabilisers that work when the yacht is at anchor. Propulsion is from twin propellers of large diameter and high performance.

The yard is now involved in building of six new yachts for different owners.

The luxury yacht MONDO45 is the “stem cell” for the new MONDO yacht series which has been implemented by two new models: Expedition Yacht MONDO35 and the MONDO56 explorer.

The well known Italian luxury yacht builder, Mondo Marine, is proud to present a preview of the new motor yacht M50 project, created in collaboration with the Milan based HOT LAB Yacht & Design studio. The M50 superyacht project is designed with three decks and a vast sun-deck.

THe innOvATive LOOk of the new semi-displacement yacht M50 draws on elements of Mondo Marine’s traditional styling heritage, adding innovative design solutions that give the yacht’s profile flowing, linear appeal.

Her MOsT eYe-cATcHing feature is the steep rake of the stern, which generates a forward visual thrust for the superstructure and creates a play of open and filled spaces, allowing natural light to bathe the main deck interiors.

THe fuLL-HeigHT winDOws running most of the length of the main deck create exciting, light-filled interior spaces that allow a constant dialogue with the exterior.

Access TO THe M5O YAcHT is along the central walkway separating the two large sunpads – this leads to the aft cockpit, which offers a large sun area and lounge with spacious sofas evoking the generous spaces typical of an open design.

THe fOLD-DOwn BeAcH AreA of the new luxury yacht M50 project is uniquely large for a vessel of this weight. It conceals the access stairway and forms a striking yet warmly welcoming area. This stylistic solution creates an extended visual sweep that acts as a conceptual reflection of the classic external lines. Automobile-style details that are a typical feature of Hot Lab’s work include the design of the aft fairleads. The vessel’s starboard garage hosts a large tender.

Like ALL THe YArD’s MOre recenT YAcHTs, structural, hydrodynamic and technical design for this 50-metre semi-displacement superyacht M50 was handled by Mondo Marine Engineering.

The new M50 project will be presented during the next Monaco Yacht Show (MONDO MARINE stand, Quai des Etats-Unis QE6) and the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show (MONDO MARINE stand, Superyacht Builders 668).

Super yacht OKKO’s three decks include a spacious main deck owner’s suite with a well-equipped relaxation area providing comfortable seating and a generous cloakroom.
