Former superyacht Captain turned specialist industry journalist, Michael, knows first-hand just how valuable SYOG is. Michael said, “A hardback book that fits on the Captain’s shelf, just above his desk, is the perfect ever-ready resource for him to refer to when organising the owner’s needs.”

Michael continues, “I am delighted that SYOG has invited us onto its editorial board, to tap into the vast pool of superyacht knowledge, an experience I share with my equally expert wife, Frances.

“The project-planning ‘conception to realisation’ approach of this year’s book is exactly what the industry needs. Its sections are themed according to the five stages of the new-build process, namely: Imagine. Plan. Build. Equip. Enjoy.”

Over its five-year life-span, SYOG has become an essential industry reference tool. 10,000 copies are distributed annually to superyacht owners, yacht management companies, shipyards, naval architects, wealth managers, yacht designers, charter companies and the potential superyacht owners of tomorrow: charter guests.

Discussing the content of the book, Michael said, “I believe the format and content of SYOG to be spot on. I love its size and the features hit the right note, neither preaching to the converted nor plunging industry newcomers into a sea of superyacht jargon.”

Frances Howorth agreed. She said, “I believe the industry needs more new owners if it is to grow. In one handy volume, SYOG provides everything that anyone planning on buying their first superyacht will ever need to know.”

For many years, Frances Howorth was a superyacht Chef, Chief Stew and finally Purser. She has continued her career ashore, as a photographer and features editor for many of the world’s leading superyacht publications.

Frances said, ”Knowing the subject personally enables me to write with authority. We are both delighted to have been asked back by SYOG to help with the 2013 – 2014 issue.”

New superyacht concepts developed by Hot Lab Yacht & Design for RMK Marine

January 14, 2013

Hot Lab Yacht & Design are presently working at RMK Marine in Turkey on a comprehensive 43m yacht refit project. This recent work as well as motor yacht Karia that was displayed at the 22nd edition of Monaco Yacht Show in 2012, has demonstrated the quality of build and extensive facilities offered by RMK Marine, and led the Hot Lab studio to search for the possibility to present the spectacular RMK 5000 superyacht design project to the yard.

RMK 5000 True Luxury Explorer yacht concept developed by Hot Lab

RMK 5000 yacht concept developed by Hot Lab

The Hot Lab idealised concepts show two primary variations, the True Luxury Explorer  yacht and the Leisure yacht concept, both of which have a great deal of flexibility to suit the individual client requirements and the tastes of the current market.

Designed with modern lines and soft curves there is smooth uncluttered look and feel to the design. The full displacement hulls on both designs provide long range cruising with thanks to the diesel/electric propulsion package under 500 GT thresholds. Both projects accommodate up to 10 guests and 8 crew plus the Captain.

On the  RMK 5000 True Luxury Explorer yacht concept, there is a vast aft deck specifically designed to accommodate a tender of up to 10.2m. When equipping the aft deck with the custom tender, the area beneath is dedicated to underwater and on-water excursion toys including submarine, diving room, hovpods and jet-skis.

While the exact GA is in the configuration phase, this area can also be converted into a “touch and go” heli deck in order to enjoy the most out of the True Luxury Explorer superyacht and the areas it will take you to. This heli deck will give the owner and guests the freedom of exploring even the most secluded areas.

With the heli deck version aft, a yacht tender of 9m can be stored under the main deck behind the engine room with a pair of jet skis that are disembarked using the winged shell door configuration.

In addition to these amenities that can be enjoyed with families and friends, special attention is given to additional storage, ease of provisioning, extra freezing spaces and cold garbage storage that combined complete the package of circumnavigation without a need of stopping in unscheduled ports.

On the RMK 5000 Leisure yacht concept the helipad is substituted with a 6 meter wide swimming pool and sunbeds creating an environment of peace and quiet whilst enjoying the ultimate cruising experience. The 9m tender is cleverly placed in the lazarette, which uses an overhead crane to deploy it easily over the side into the sea.

For both the True Luxury Explorer and Leisure superyacht designs the beach club area is to the stern, thus providing friends and families’ unforgettable moments enjoying their culinary and drinks whilst admiring the activities going on. An additional feature comes with the hydraulically operated bottom hinged transom door which creates an extended area for the beach club.

The main difference between the interior layout of the True Luxury Explorer and Leisure yacht designs is the location of the 10 person inside and outside dining areas. On the Leisure concept, the interior dining table is situated when entering the main deck through the convex shaped sliding doors and the alfresco dining table arrangement is situated one deck above on the wheelhouse deck.

For the True Luxury Explorer yacht concept there are two interior dining tables seating 10 people at a time. The purpose of having two inside dining tables is to be able to dine on the sun deck (observation deck) with 360 degrees of view in an enclosed area that can be turned into an alfresco dining area at the touch of a button operating the sliding doors during your voyages in warmer climates. The other dining table is situated right on the wheelhouse deck.

Her robust hull is designed to ice class standards to overcome the harshest marine environments. The engines, hull design and interior layout have been arranged and thought through to give the owner and guests the best cruising range and seakeeping characteristics possible.

İn order to give the best range, RMK Marine will provide two propulsion packages, a diesel/electric option or a diesel only system with the higher capacity of fuel available resulting in no interruption on longer voyages such as transatlantic or transpacific crossings.

First sea trials successfully completed by the 14m Silver Arrows Marine GRANTURISMO superyacht tender

December 20, 2012

The amazing 14-metre Silver Arrows Marine Granturismo superyacht tender has successfully completed its first sea trials. The splendid Granturismo boat represents the first innovative Granturismo of the seas concept, styled in partnership with Mercedes-Benz Style.

14m Silver Arrows Marine Granturismo superyacht tender under first sea trial

14m Silver Arrows Marine Granturismo superyacht tender under its first sea trials

“This was an exciting moment for Silver Arrows Marine and I am pleased to say the boat showed all the potential we expected, and more,” said SAM Chief Executive Officer Jacopo Spadolini. “The boat looked solid, powerful and like nothing else afloat.”

The sea trials provided the first taste of how the innovative new hull performs in a variety of trim, load and sea states. Hi-tech data acquisition techniques were employed, with the results providing an invaluable basis for future development work. As befits a project that merges both marine and automotive worlds, many of the techniques used, including automotive-style data acquisition, have their origins in motor racing.

SAM Engineering Director Giorgio Stirano, who has run Formula One motor racing teams, said: “Boats are not racing cars but to use F1-style telemetry for data logging makes a great deal of sense. With equipment such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, along with GPS positioning, we have been able to build up a good picture of the boat’s abilities.”

The prototype used in the sea trials is an open hull and lacks the distinctive superstructure, with its many new design features, of the finished yacht. The trials included an offshore “racing circuit”, complete with virtual corners, so that comparable lap times could be taken to gauge how different set-ups affected the boat’s performance, handling and comfort.

Helmsman for the first trials, SAM Global Marketing and PR Director Paolo Bonaveri, said: “The hull is very new and different in terms of its profile and in certain sea states it impressed us greatly for its manoeuvrability and comfort.

“We liken our motor yacht to a Granturismo motor car: dynamic but with great comfort and luxury, and the trials showed we are on the right course.”

The sea trials provided an opportunity to fine-tune the propulsion system and assess the Granturismo yacht tender’s capabilities in different conditions, and in particular its ability to stay “dry” at its projected cruising speed of 30 knots. The sea trials are expected to continue into the next months.

Jacopo Spadolini concluded: “We are not looking for ultimate speed but all-round performance with great comfort and ease of handling. Our testing shows we are on the way to achieving it but we recognize there is a lot of work still to be done.”

Designs and video simulations of the first Silver Arrows Marine Granturismo superyacht tender were first displayed at a special presentation in Monaco at the time of the Monaco Boat Show in September. More details of the yacht’s innovations and unique design, the result of a SAM partnership with Mercedes-Benz Style, will follow soon.

Ron Gibbs, Silver Arrows Marine Chairman, said
: “The success of this important first step in the development process means the SAM motor yacht is on its way. The hull has shown what it can do, now the focus can shift to the superstructure. We have a great deal still to do but I am confident the first SAM prototype is progressing well.”

PS+A Palomba Serafini designed 65m motor yacht JOLLY ROGER concept for Benetti Design Innovation Project 2012

December 18, 2012

The highly innovative 65-metre motor yacht Jolly Roger concept has been developed by PS+A Palomba Serafini for the Benetti Design Innovation Project 2012, presented by the leading Italian shipyard Benetti at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show. Jolly Roger superyacht design represents the desire to rebuild a relationship with the sea, genius loci of the boats.

“We started from the idea of ‘high-powered car of the sea’. Aristocratic and futuristic. An automotive dna that is in the structures, which release the decks from visual obstruction by giving back the relation with nature and the sea. As a result, large windows and a long deck that looks like a terrace overlooking the water have been created,” as stated by PS+A Palomba Serafini.

Exquisite Leaf table by Lanka Marine presented at MYS 2012

December 03, 2012

Lanka Marine boasts a fine reputation for producing uniquely designed, exclusive products crafted from high quality natural stones. The company is situated in the historical town of Pietrasanta, just a stone’s throw away from the cities of Lucca as well as Carrara.

Leaf table by Lanka Marine and Thierry Gauguin presented at MYS 2012

Leaf table by Lanka Marine and Thierry Gauguin presented at MYS 2012

An art form in it’s own right, a piece from the established and accomplished team of Lanka Marine eloquently proves the delicate, artistic and naturally beautiful qualities of these refined luxury materials every single time.

With the Carrara-region as the world’s leading region for quarrying and producing top quality marble artworks, the area upholds an outstanding reputation where the top quality is combined with the best craftsmanship and state of the art technology, forming pieces that truly transcend into a league of their own. By approaching the material with the respect it deserves, pieces are transformed into fine art rather than merely decoration.

Within the ancient tradition of marble sculpting, that has been passed down through generations, Lanka Marine is solidly dedicated to a philosophy of respecting the age old experience and competence of their team of visionaries, without losing touch of the latest developments with regards to innovation and technology. This proves a highly successful, and greatly appreciated formula, where natural stones such as the world renowned Carrara Statuario are used to sculpt and materialise a vision.

With an extended team offering full-service assistance from the initial client contact onwards, ranging from design and execution to after-sales care and maintenance, Lanka Marine is always fully dedicated to providing not just luxurious enhancements of homes, superyachts and airplane-interiors, but aim towards shaping an environment that exceeds one’s wildest dreams – always in close cooperation with the client.

The choice for the historical village of Pietrasanta was not coincidental, as the town has been known as Little Athens or the City of Artists for centuries. Ever since Michelangelo came to take advantage of the region’s exquisite natural stones, Pietrasanta (literally meaning Holy Stone) has been a thriving society where many of the finest artists live and work.

It was this inspiring environment, and the untapped potential of the fine Carrara Marble found throughout the region, that moved Lanka Marine to initiate a project unlike any the world of art, design and architecture has ever seen.

In close cooperation with Thierry Gauguin, head of design for world renowned designer and artist Philippe Starck, and mechanic Hermann Blot, Lanka Marine is proud to introduce a piece of craftsmanship that evaporates the boundaries between art and design, showing the world what is possible with the application of natural stones like marble, onyx and granite.

The initial idea, developed between Lanka Marine and Thierry Gauguin, was to materialise an object that would reflect the finesse of a Pure Made in Italy product, and the result has pushed boundaries well into the unexpected. With the successful completion of this project, Lanka Marine has made the impossible possible.

After a successful debut at this year’s edition of the Monaco Yacht Show, the exquisite Leaf table has been attracting attention, appreciation and amazement from around the globe. With a sophisticated, contemporary and refined design, delicate execution and intricately integrated technique, the Leaf table is an outstanding piece of art.

A fascinating vision come to life, the table transcends its state of being a piece of furniture and becomes a unique object that simply has no equal in the world today.

It shows a one-piece marble surface, high gloss and meticulously polished, measuring an astonishing 2.5 metres in length and an incredible thickness of merely 2 centimeters. These dimensions are as groundbreaking as they are remarkable, all formed from one single slab of the finest Carrara Marble.

The long, rectangular table top with soft, smoothly curved edges, supported by four elegantly lean legs, is topped by a leaf-shaped, curved lighting piece that organically flows upwards from one corner. This leaf, covering a significant part of the table’s surface and bathing it in a gentle glow, has a uniquely integrated system of mechanical elements, allowing a collection of minimalistic lighting fixtures to seemingly appear growing from the marble.

The Leaf table has generated ample amazement and interest since its Monaco Yacht Show debut, proving it to be both successful and worthy of succession. The table is more than just an object, yet remains effortlessly modest in her form and her function.

Lanka Marine has tapped new sources, raised the bar and set a course for establishing natural stones as a base for fine artworks in their own right. In fact, Lanka Marine believe the material itself to be art, supplied by nature. And with a team of highly skilled, talented and dedicated professionals working relentlessly to provide clients with the finest pieces, the Leaf table is just a glimpse of what is possible.

Highly Innovative “Dual Speed” Hull Design by Gmotion Yachts

December 03, 2012

Naval architect Stuart Friezer and interior designer Ricky Smith from Gmotion Yachts are proud to present their new yacht designs. Meeting requests of the current changing market from an unusual approach, the Gmotion yacht designs are not based on the designers’ own preferences, but on those, expressed directly as briefs from two qualified potential buyers.

GMotion 34 Superyacht Design

In all cases the buyers expressed clearly what they wanted included and from the briefs emerged a clear message for riding the GFC and getting clients to contract new builds.

Both clients’ briefs were almost identical; the expedition yacht design must be pragmatic in a style which enabled owner friendly operation including launch and retrieval of watercraft and when necessary, drive the boat themselves. Both the potential clients tabled built yachts designs they admired but wanted improved. They both wanted a more spontaneous vessel which could react to weather conditions and move fast, or similarly cruise with optimized seakeeping.

The most important point in the clients brief was always the need for efficiency in the hull design. The most unusual item of both clients brief was that they wanted their expedition yachts to move away from the trawler style and take on a more aggressive and sexy external styling. One thing the shipbuilding industry knows is there are no sexy expedition yachts.

Naval architect Stuart Friezer took this challenge head on and rather than creating a design to match the standards of performance speed and economy of existing expedition yachts he used them as a starting benchmark from which to improve. Applying his vast experience and training in hull form design and development for wave piercing catamaran designs for Incat Tasmania and high speed sailing yachts Stuart visualised a hull form which had never previously been built.

Gmotion 34 Yacht Design - front view

Gmotion 34 Yacht Design - front view Photo credit: 2012 Stuart Friezer Ricky Smith Gmotion Yachts

The Gmotion design uses design elements from sailing skiffs and wave piercing catamarans in order to achieve an efficient “dual speed” hull shape. After exhaustive design development Stuart modelled his creation, the Gmotion hull form, and the existing yacht, and ran both through comparative resistance testing.

The results proved Stuart’s theory that the longer hull form with a fine bow and skiff like shape was far superior to traditional trawler type hull forms predominant on yachts of this style.

The Gmotion hull shape offers more efficient cruise speeds both below hull speed and above. Gmotion yachts will push through their hull speed and find a performance “sweet spot” at around 1.25 x hull speed [where Hull speed (knots) = 3.04 x sq.rt. (L.W.L. in metres)].

Gmotion Yachts Range and Gmotion Yachts Tenders

Gmotion Yachts Range and Gmotion Yachts Tenders Photo credit: 2012 Stuart Friezer Ricky Smith Gmotion Yachts

Gmotion Fast Cruise Speed (knots) = 3.80 x sqrt(LWL in m)

GM20 17 knots
GM25 19 knots
GM34 22 knots
GM45 25 knots
GM 60 29 knots
GM 76 33 knots

Compared to high speed motor yachts with V-bottomed prismatic hull forms the Gmotion hull is far superior at this speed and it is not until speed is over 1.7 x hull speed that they can be less efficient. For the GM34 yacht this is above 30 knots so for an owner wanting higher speeds the Gmotion hull form is a very efficient alternative.

The Gmotion hull seakeeping testing proved to be far superior to both the low speed trawler and high speed planning hull forms. The long fine Gmotion bow slices through smaller waves and gently lifts the hull over bigger swells to smooth the motion in the ocean. At the same time Gmotion hulls don’t suffer the ploughing effect axe bows experience in following seas.

When the results had validated the idea of a dual speed expedition yacht Stuart asked Ricky Smith who had been in attendance at both client meetings to undertake the challenge of styling the G Motion hull form into a sexy motor yacht with an interior driven by the same pragmatic approach applied to the hull. The result is a distinctive exterior styling which retains a powerful masculine, hard edged feel without unnecessary knuckles, styling complications or adornment.

Gmotion 25 Yacht Design - Aft Terrace View

Gmotion 25 Yacht Design - Aft Terrace View Photo credit: 2012 Stuart Friezer Ricky Smith Gmotion Yachts

Sweeping stairs wrap around 180 degree full height glass slide away doors, and while the exterior styling has been simplified and references contempory minimalism it has an understated elegance. On the GM34 yacht model the traditional flybridge has been replaced by an oversized crow’s nest deck offering both retreat privacy and a great vantage point lookout. This is due to having the oversized decks, mid terrace deck, open transom terracing available as well as the dining banquette offered on the foredeck.

The inclusion of the pod drive units resulted in enlarged accommodation spaces on the lower deck. The designers added a unique full beam lower deck guest’s Media Room or casual saloon facility at the bottom of the guests stairs which can also be sectioned off the hallway and create an addition 2 rooms if needed. Arriving on the lower deck into an open full beam space rather than a hallway is typical to the designs of Gmotion Yachts range where light and panorama are major considerations for those on board.

The confluence of naval architecture and interior designer is not common; naval architecture being an engineering science and interior design an aesthetic driven practice. Stuart proposed designing the interior bulkhead structure to the interior concept thereby effectively cutting out material, weight and build time. The end result is an interior design which presents the facilities expected in such a vessel as well as having an underlying cost benefit ethic of reducing unnecessary time, materials and cost.

When the interior and exterior styling were first completed they decided to test the market with a last minute visit to the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show where they presented the design to selected top brokers and shipyards present. Overwhelmed by the positive responses from the industry the pair of designers were immediately approached by a European yard to design a 25m Gmotion yacht version to align with their current market and sales demographic. The GMotion Yachts’ website was formed and the first design requested returned for consideration in just under 4 weeks.

Gmotion 34 Yacht Design - Main Deck and Hull

The leading brokers and shipyards could see immediately the GMotion designs range now including the 34 and 25-metre expedition yacht models, a 13-metre cabin cruiser plus a 6 metre custom matching tender would be easy to build with little to no tumblehome and almost vertical hull plating for the majority of the shape. Including IPS pods for ease of installation and efficiency and removing the need for bow thrusters in the build schedule compound the overall appeal of this design. Many yachts have a build program of minimum 3 years however the 34 metre GMotion Yacht design will reduce that dramatically allowing owners to be back on water in a much shorter timeframe.

Despite the markets fascination with the current spread of motor yachts designed well over 50 metres it is good for the market to have designers who are concentrating on designing for a market demographic which has the potential to help many new build projects be realised.

The Gmotion Yachts Expedition Series yacht models 34 and 25 both feature large open aft decks with a unique feature where the tender and jet ski is housed on a mid terrace platform between the aft deck and the aft stairs. This lowered terrace design feature ensures the aft view from the interior is not impeded while cruising. It also, then creates a mid terrace beach deck open to the transom with masses of locker storage for sun lounges, barbeques and fender stowage in the most perfect location for access.
