Project Utopia by BMT Nigel Gee and Yacht Island Design

September 21, 2011

UKs’s leading independent design consultancy BMT Nigel Gee, a subsidiary of the BMT Group, has announced its latest design Project Utopia, developed in partnership with Yacht Island Design.  Project Utopia, an avant‐garde vision of a future concept breaks the traditional naval architectural mould which the market has come to expect and offers a truly unique outlook free from any conventional design constraints.

James Roy, Yacht Design Director at BMT Nigel Gee explains: “Visions of the future are often constrained by familiarity with the present or reflection on the past.  Much is made in today’s design community of starting with a blank sheet of paper yet many, if not all yacht concepts revert back to the traditional form – the perception that a yacht should be a form of transport becomes an immediate constraint. Utopia is not an object to travel in, it is a place to be, an island established for anyone who has the vision to create such a place.”

Measuring 100m in length and breadth, and spanning over 11 decks with the equivalent volume of a present‐day cruise liner, there is enough space to create an entire micronation on Project Utopia. The design is based on a four legged platform employing the same principals of any small waterplane area design for minimum motions in even the most extreme sea conditions. Each leg supports a fully azimuthing thruster and with four such units, the design can redeploy between desired locations at slow speeds. A large central structure bisects the water surface acting as the conduit for the mooring system which is a critical element of the design, as well as housing a wet dock for access by tenders. In addition to tender access the design features multiple helicopter pads.

The main accommodation and service spaces span some 11 decks with the uppermost deck covered by a retractable canopy. On the “13th Floor” there is an observatory with 360 degree views, at which point the occupants would be 65m above the water surface.

James Roy concludes: “Pioneering design ideas such as Utopia are exactly the types of projects that our team excel in.  Our forward thinking approach and unrivalled state of the art engineering experience allows us to work closely with designers, stylists and shipyards, to bring these ideas to life and lead the market into the next generation of naval architecture.”

JFA Yachts has positioned itself in the semi-custom catamaran market with the new JFA Long Island 85 Catamaran design by Naval Architect Marc Lombard. The office of Marc Lombard has put all of their 25 years of experience with cruising and racing catamarans into this new 85’ JFA Long Island 85 Catamaran. The firm is also responsible for the interior design.

By her size and her freeboard, the Long Island 85 Catamaran is designed to sail far and in the greatest comfort. The hulls and the bottom of the nacelle will be made of aluminum while the deck and superstructures will be made of composite. The desired goal is to build a multi-hull with its weight adapted to its navigation program.

Currently the Group has eight yachts between motor and sail in production, one 55m Motor Yacht (to be consigned in 2011); one 45m Sailing yacht (to be consigned in 2011); one 50m SY (to be consigned in 2012); one 40m SY (to be consigned in 2012); one 38m SY from the racing line (to be consigned in 2013); one 73m MY (to be consigned in 2013); one 60m ketch (to be consigned in 2013); one 60m sloop (to be consigned in 2014); another 60m ketch (to be consigned in 2014). In the course of the year 2011, superyacht Fidelis – the tenth yacht in the series of 56m yachts – was consigned in June. That event was followed by the consignment of the 55m MY Galileo G, the second Vitruvius® series yacht built by the Picchiotti brand. By the end of the summer the Group will have consigned a 45m sailing yacht, the fourth yacht in that series.

Description of the yachts presented at the Monaco Yacht Show and Fort Lauderdale Boat Show

Sailing Yacht Fidelis

Fidelis, designed by the Technical and Design department at the Perini Navi Group in collaboration with New Zealander Ron Holland, has a hull and superstructure in aluminium with displacement at full load of 545 tonnes and displacement of 497 grt. Her ketch sail plan, designed by the Mast Division at Perini Navi, measures about 1,500 square meters. Her main and mizzen masts are both aluminium and are respectively 58.37 and 47.97meters high, while the boom is in carbon and has internal furlers. The yacht’s layout has particularly ample outdoor living spaces and has both rear and forward cockpits that offer guests many ways to enjoy these open spaces in relaxation and comfort. Motor Yacht Galileo G

Galileo G is the name of the 55m Picchiotti Ice Class yacht from the Vitruvius® series launched the past 10th of July and the second of three motor yachts sold as of today by the Perini Navi Group in collaboration with Vitruvius Ltd and Philippe Briand. Designed for maximum efficiency to allow for autonomous navigation, Galileo G superyacht was built and designed according to Ice Class regulations for ABS Ice Class IB guidelines so that this yacht can reach the Arctic along the Northwest Passage, the sea route that connects the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans via the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The hull is in reinforced steel that is thicker than is the norm and has a protective ice belt in the scantlings all along the waterline especially in the bow, centre and stern purpose built to resist collision with ice. On top of structural reinforcements and propulsion requirements that will give it the strength and power to navigate through ice, this yacht has been designed and planned to have the machinery and systems that allow it to obtain ‘Winterization,’ a denomination that is obligatory for all vessels that can operate safely and for long periods of time in areas that characterised by very low temperatures. The yacht has a telescopic retractable ice detection system that transmits 3D images to a monitor in the control room to spot submerged and semi-submerged obstacles when they are still over 1km away. Galileo G yacht also has 3 tenders: a 9.5 mt Hurricane Zodiac with a reinforced aluminium hull; a 6.3mt tender; a 4.2mt rescue tender; two Lasers and four kayaks.

Sailing Yacht P2

P2 charter yacht is the first yacht in the 38m series designed by the French designer Philippe Briand. Launched in 2008, SY P2’s hull is made from Sealium, an aluminium alloy that provides great mechanical strength and is both lightweight and corrosion resistant. When in regatta mode P2 dislocates 138 tonnes of which 29 are positioned in her bayonet keel that ends in a torpedo bulb. Her draught goes from 5.50m to just 3.50 m to allow her access to both small harbours and shallow bays. To improve her upwind angle P2 superyacht has 7 tonnes of movable seawater ballast.

The yacht carries a 50m Hybrid Modulus carbon fibre mast and a Park Avenue boom in the same material. Hybrid Modulus carbon fibre is made by combining Standard Modulus carbon fibre with High Modulus carbon fibre, a combination which increases the resistance while reducing the weight of the final product. The upwind sail plan measures about 734 m. She also has PBO rigging and titanium turnbuckles that weigh just 310 kg total. In keeping with the Perini tradition, the 38m line has refined and comfortable interiors. The interior design, done entirely by Perini Navi’s Interior Design Department, was inspired by the lightness of the hull and has the simple yet refined furnishings suited to a performance cruiser.

Sailing Yacht Antara

Charter Yacht Antara is a 45m ketch that was launched in 1991. Thanks to a complete refit done at the Perini Navi shipyard in Viareggio during the Winter of 2006 and the Spring o 2007, Antara superyacht today has the highest quality standards available in yachting today.
