May 10, 2012

Dubois-designed vessels have been exceptionally successful at this year´s regattas. But perhaps most impressive of all was the attendance of 10 Dubois designs  at the St. Barths Bucket, making up almost a quarter of the 46 strong fleet. Dubois team was delighted to see the 45m luxury yacht Lady B win her class and place second overall behind the separately classed, classic style charter yacht This Is Us. Lady B gave the most impressive performance of the modern yachts and  looked spectacular. The 39m luxury charter yacht Ganesha and the 57.5m Twizzle superyacht placed second and third in class respectively. All of the yachts were sailed beautifully and it really was a sight to behold.

Proving their motto to seek better ways to do things whilst keeping things simple, IMG launched their new look website to coincide with the commencement of the Millennium Cup 2012. Whilst the content remains the same the new layout makes navigating the website quicker and easier in this time conscious world. It should also make it much easier to update the news and events sections so expect more news from IMG over the coming months.

Millennium Cup 2012 to start today

February 16, 2012

The Millennium Cup 2012 started today at 11am in Auckland, with a harbour race. The three days of racing take place close to shore, in the Waitemata harbour and inner Hauraki Gulf. This means those on vantage points at Devonport, North Head, Bastion Point, on the East Coast Bays and Whanagaparoa Peninsula, as well as along the Motutapu and Rangitoto shorelines, have a chance to see all of the action as the participants battle for supremacy.

NZ Millennium Cup organisers have designed courses that start and finish off Viaduct Harbour, ensuring there will also be good viewing at both ends of the races for those working in the Auckland CBD.

“Those watching, wherever they are, will be treated to a real spectacle,” says organising committee chairman, Stuart Robinson. “These are some of the world’s most spectacular yachts and, when they fly their spinnakers, some will be carrying more than 1000 square metres of sail!”

Racing in this year’s NZ Millennium Cup started today at 11am with a harbour race will be followed with 11am starts on Friday and Saturday with races from Viaduct Harbour to the inner Hauraki Gulf islands and back.

While the NZ Millennium Cup does have an active social component, Robinson stresses that the racing is taken very seriously by the vessels’ owners, their guests and crews and by the organisers.

“All of the races in the 2012 NZ Millennium Cup will be run by race management experts such as Ross Marwick and Hal Wagstaff from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

“These are the same race management teams that will be in charge a few weeks later, when the Volvo 70 Fleet arrive in Auckland, compete in their inshore race and then head away on the next leg of their race around the world.”

When not racing, the superyacht owners and their guests are given the chance to experience some of New Zealand’s finest food and wine in a mixture of casual and formal settings. These range from a “Kiwi bach” themed post-race function in the Floating Pavilion to a formal gala dinner and prizegiving in The Cloud on Princes Wharf, complete with a charity auction to raise money for Coastguard.

NZ Millennium Cup Superyacht Race 2012

December 16, 2011

In less then two months, the Millennium Cup superyacht race in New Zealand will take place once again, starting what will become an annual competition. The Millennium Cup had its debut in 2000, when Team New Zealand defended the America’s Cup in its home waters.

The idea was to thank superyacht owners and crew for visiting Auckland and nearby regions. It was also a way to introduce more people to the area’s builders, refit facilities, and related businesses.

A repeat regatta was held in 2003, with the intention of doing the same every two to three years. Unfortunately, that did not occur, but organizers now feel confident an annual event in the Hauraki Gulf will be well attended.

Besides showcasing the local industry, the Millennium Cup is being positioned as the premiere superyacht event of the South Pacific.

So far five yachts are confirmed for the Millennium Cup 2012, being held on 16-18 February. Among them is Yachting Development‘s 34m (102ft) Silvertip superyacht, which won the Millennium Cup in 2003.

The remaining four competitors — 31m (102ft) charter yacht Pacific Eagle, 49m (161ft) charter yacht Georgia, 40m (131ft) sailing yacht Janice of Wyoming and 44m (144ft) super yacht Imagine — were all built by Alloy Yachts.

Despite all of the Millennium Cup’s confirmed competitors being sailing yachts, motoryachts are also welcome. The motoryachts will naturally depart before the sailing yachts on race days. The courses include Waiheke Island, Waitemata Harbour, Kawau Island, as well as the East Coast Bays region and Hibiscus Coast area. All of the locales provide spectator viewing spots on land and on water.
