Only one week after competing for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Skandia Team GBR’s best sailors are expected to participate in the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week 2012, as announced yesterday, supporting the event’s ‘Best of British’ theme.

This year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week immediately follows the London 2012 Olympic Games and will provide a fantastic opportunity to celebrate what has historically been one of Great Britain’s most successful Olympic sports.

Skandia Team GBR’s sailors are due to attend the regatta on Friday 17th August. Organisers are working with the RYA, Aberdeen Asset Management and Volvo, Skandia Team GBR sponsor and Official Car Supplier to the event, to create a programme for the sailors that enables competitors and spectators at the event to celebrate their efforts in this summer’s Games.

Saskia Clark and Hannah Mills, who represent Great Britain in the 470 class, and Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell also competing in the 470 class were at the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes yesterday to make the announcement alongside double Olympic Gold Medallist Shirley Robertson and organisers of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week.

25 year-old Luke Patience said: “Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is great fun and competitive. It is that nice balance between a fantastic social scene and extremely tough racing on possibly the most famous stretch of water in the world! I am really looking forward to being there in August, especially straight after the Olympics where I hope we will have something to celebrate with the sailing public.

“What I love about Cowes Week is that it can host any ages, just pick the right class. It is always hectic and there is always some kind of story to take home with you.”

There will be a red, white and blue theme around Cowes during the regatta week, (11-18 August) and a chance to watch the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games live on the big screens throughout Cowes on Sunday 12 August which will coincide with special Family Day activities.

The official event charity, Toe in the Water, will be also hosting a ‘Best of British’ crew party on Friday 17 August and the organisers of the event are waiving the entry fee for the first ten entries received from past British sailing Olympians.

78 days left before superyachts head to London for the Olympics

In order to mark the final countdown to the beginning of the Olympic Games in London, the traditional ceremony to light the Olympic flame was held today at the ancient site of Olympia in Greece. In a break with tradition, London is preparing to host superyachts, never seen before in the UK capital, happy not to be left out of the action.

The Olympic flame has begun its 78-day journey towards London this morning, making a 10,000 mile trip. It will be carried by 8,000 torchbearers, arriving in Stratford, East London, on July 27. The first torchbearer will be Spyros Gianniotis, the British-born Greek 10km swimming world champion.

From July, Royal Docks 2012 are offering a limited number of exclusive superyacht berths to provide a totally unique Olympic experience. The facility is positioned just minutes from London City airport and the city’s sporting venues. In partnership with MGMTyacht, Royal Docks 2012 will be providing a full dedicated bespoke concierge service too. Whatever one could possibly want, Royal Docks’ concierge service has it covered.

Superyachts wanting to come to London this summer must hurry as berths are being booked up fast.

Portland Port – superyacht hotspot for the 2012 Olympic Games

Portland, the host of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing races, is set to become one of the hotspots for superyachts this summer with several deep water berths and anchorages available during the event. Portland Port, situated at the end of a peninsula off the Dorset coast, has teamed up with superyacht concierge service MGMT to provide a bespoke service for superyachts setting sail for the 2012 Olympics.

The Olympic sailing takes place directly after the Superyacht Cup Race in Cowes.  By basing the yachts at Portland, owners and charterers heading for stadium events in the capital can now get round the problem of Thames River height restrictions, thanks to helicopter transfers from Dorset into the heart of London.

Amanda Milner, Portland Port’s Commercial Sales Manager, said: ‘As some big sailing yachts are unable to cruise down the Thames, Portland would be a good location to use as a base.  Yacht owners and their guests who wish to be in London for the 2012 Olympic Games will be able to leave their yachts at Portland Harbour, and take a helicopter transfer directly into the heart of London, where the stadium events will be held.’

MGMT Director Mark Upton said: ‘From July, the River Thames and its surrounding waterways will welcome the largest number of superyachts ever witnessed to the capital at any one time.

In June 2005 London won the bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games. One of the few events to be held outside the Capital City will be the sailing competitions. Portland Port and Weymouth Bay will be the venue for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing events.

About Weymouth and Portland

The venue comprises the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) and the adjoining commercial marina.

It has kick-started the regeneration of the former Naval Air Station at Portland, now known as Osprey Quay, where new residential, commercial and marina facilities are already underway.

Weymouth and Portland provides some of the best natural sailing waters in the UK, with facilities on land to match. The site has already hosted numerous international sailing events, including the 2006 ISAF World Youth Championships attended by over 60 nations.

Work to enhance the sailing facilities at Weymouth and Portland has been completed. The enhancements to the existing WPNSA facilities include a new permanent 250m slipway and new lifting and mooring facilities.

The project was completed on budget and ahead of schedule, providing world-class facilities for elite athletes and the local community more than three years before the Games.

Weymouth and Portland Bay is a natural amphitheatre and there are several vantage points to watch the Sailing events from if one does not have a ticket. The Local Authority will be also providing a big screen to watch the Games coverage on Weymouth beach, and putting on a range of free sporting and cultural activities.

After the Games

The National Sailing Academy will benefit from the improved facilities that the Olympic Games will leave behind, providing a state-of-the-art facility for elite training, competition and local community use.

This use has already started: from a community programme through to hosting the Olympic Windsurfing discipline, RS:X class World Championship in 2009, and the IFDS (Paralympic Sailing) World Championship in 2011.

The Olympic Games are taking place between the 29th July 2012 – 11th August 2012. The Paralympic Games are taking place between the 31st August 2012 – 5th September 2012.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) revealed yesterday the first details of the lighting of the Olympic Flame for the London 2012 Olympic Games on 10 May, and its arrival into the UK on 18 May. The Flame will travel around the UK for 70 days on the Olympic Torch Relay from 19 May to 27 July, presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung.

•    Olympic Flame to be lit in Olympia, Greece on 10 May
•    8 day relay around Greek mainland and islands from 10 May to 17 May
•    Olympic Flame Handover Ceremony to be held at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens on 17 May
•    Olympic Flame arrives into Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall on 18 May on board British Airways flight ‘BA2012’

Organised by the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC), the Olympic Flame will be lit mid-morning (BST) on 10 May using the sun’s rays at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, in a traditional hour-long ceremony among the historic ruins of the home of the ancient Games.

From the Lighting Ceremony in Olympia, the HOC will take the Olympic Flame on an 8-day relay around Greece before arriving at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens on 17 May for the official Olympic Flame Handover Ceremony. During an early evening (BST) hour-long ceremony, the Olympic Flame will be handed over to a London 2012 representative.

Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG said: ‘It gives me great pleasure to confirm 10 May as the Flame lighting date and RNAS Culdrose as the Olympic Flame’s arrival point into the UK. My team is looking forward to working with the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Defence  and our commercial partners to create exciting events to mark the Flame’s Greek provenance and its arrival to our shores.’

The Greek leg of the Torch Relay will showcase the beauty and history of the Greek mainland and islands to the world. The second Torchbearer on the first day and the penultimate Torchbearer on the last day of the Greek leg will be chosen by London 2012. Both Torchbearers will be inspirational people from the UK and their names will be confirmed nearer the time.

British Airways, the official airline partner of the London 2012 Games and Supporter of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, will carry the Olympic Flame on board flight ‘BA2012’ – a gold-liveried aircraft from Athens into the UK on 18 May. The specially chartered Airbus 319 will also transport the official delegation of UK representatives to and from the Athens Handover Ceremony.

As the Olympic Flame is classified as a symbolic flame it is permitted to be carried on board an aircraft subject to special authorisation from the Civil Aviation Authority. The Flame will travel in a ceremonial lantern that is secured in a specially designed cradle which is, in turn, firmly fixed to its seat on the plane using a secure holding device. The lantern is designed so the Olympic Flame can burn safely for up to 30 hours.

The Flame will arrive into the UK at RNAS Culdrose, near Helston in Cornwall early evening (BST) of 18 May. In addition to being close to the start point of the Torch Relay at Land’s End, the arrival at RNAS Culdrose acknowledges the vital contribution that maritime and coastal search and rescue services undertake for our island nation. RNAS Culdrose, home to most of the Navy’s Merlin and Sea King helicopter squadrons that are supporting operations around the world,  also offers a beautiful Cornish setting in which an estimated 1000 guests, media and members of the local community are expected to welcome the Olympic Flame.

Secretary of State for Defence Philip Hammond said: ‘I am delighted that Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose will be the first to welcome the Olympic Flame into the UK. It is a fantastic opportunity for the Armed Forces to be involved in such a unique event, and one they can take pride in for years to come.’

Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt said: ‘When BA2012 touches down in Cornwall carrying the Olympic torch it will be a hugely exciting moment. This kicks off our incredible Torch Relay right around the country and I’m sure the torch will spread ‘Olympic fever’ everywhere it goes.’

Captain Willie Entwisle, Commanding Officer of Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, said: ‘We are honoured that the Olympic Flame will arrive in the UK by landing at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose. Our personnel, many of whom are currently supporting the Royal Navy on operations across the globe, are very excited that the build up to the London 2012 Olympic Games will start here. We are delighted to be playing such an important part in this once-in-a-lifetime event.’

On the morning of 19 May the Olympic Flame will then travel from RNAS Culdrose to Land’s End ready for the start of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. The Olympic Flame will travel 8,000 miles across the UK to within 10 miles of 95% of the population. 8,000 Torchbearers will carry the Olympic Flame for approximately 300 metres each, passing the Olympic Flame from torch to torch until it reaches the Olympic Stadium on the eve of 27 July.

Marina Projects are happy to confirm that plans for Superyacht berthing in the Royal Docks, which will go along with the Olympic Games 2012, are now well advanced. The launch of this unique facility was announced during the Monaco Yacht Show in September and already four superyachts of sizes between 42 and 65 metres have reserved their berths. RYA at the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show 2012

From the 6th to 15th January, during the 2011 Tullett Prebon London Boat Show 2012, the RYA will be presenting a range different of activities, launches and winners to the show. On the RYA stand (A412) visitors will have the possibility to find out more about the runners and riders for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012, the venue at Weymouth, as well as a glimpse of the ‘Our Sporting Life – heritage exhibition’ which will be present in the country throughout 2012.

As part of the exhibition RYA will be showcasing on the stand the silver medal winning Flying Dutchman K-300, from the 1976 Olympics in Canada, ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidoso’, which has been lovingly renovated and loaned to RYA by Andrew Hurst, editor of Seahorse Magazine.

There will be loads of information available on the RYA’s Sail for Gold programme; including Passage to Portland and Push the Boat Out, as well as details on how someone and his club can get involved with supporting RYA sailors in the lead up to the Games.

RYA will also be unveiling two great new publications; RYA Yacht Sailing Techniques (Saturday 07 January, 13.45, RYA stand A412) and the RYA Boat Safety Handbook (Saturday 14 January, 14.00 RYA stand A412).

By purchasing a copy of either of these books visitors will also be in with the chance of winning some great prizes. Either a Day Skipper or Competent Crew course with Sunsail when buying RYA Yacht Sailing Techniques or the possibility to win a free safety equipment audit and assistance with setting the yacht up to meet the owner´s style of sailing with the RYA’s own Training Manager Richard Falk or Chief Sailing Instructor Craig Burton.

The Green Blue will also be offering one lucky the winner the chance to win a Henri Lloyd Foul Weather Jacket and Hi Fit Trousers from the Blue Eco range.   All the visitors have to do is visit the RYA stand to pick up an entry form, answer one question on The Green Blue and pop it back in the entry box. The winner will be drawn at random on Friday 30 January 2012.

On Friday 06 January the RYA Sailability team will be joined by Sailability ambassador and CEO of the British Inspirational Trust Phil Packer. Phil will be joining the team to receive a £2,000 cheque presented by Tom Webb to RYA Sailability and the Even Keel Project (11.00, RYA stand A412). Tom raised the money in 2011 by completing a solo round Britain sailing challenge.

Later (14.00) Phil and the team will be officially launching the 2012 RYA Sailability Sunsail Regatta. Come and join the team at the launch drinks reception and find out more about the regatta and how the money raised from the event will support sailing opportunities for people with disabilities in the UK.

At the show RYA will also be presenting awards to the RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year winners, before seeing who is shortlisted for the YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year Award winner (Saturday 07, 14.10, Knowledge Box).

Then on Wednesday 11 January RYA will unveil the winner of the RYA Yachtmaster of the Year Award. HRH The Princess Royal will be joining RYA Training Manager Richard Falk on the stand to present the prize to this year’s winner (approx. 14.40).

Throughout the show

As usual throughout the show members of RYA staff will be available on the stand to provide visitors with loads of advice and information on training courses, getting started and membership.

A host of RYA publications will be available to purchase throughout the show with a special 20% discount across the board for RYA members. There will also be a 20% discount on all RYA e-Books purchased through the App Store during the show period.
