Measuring impressive 110 meters in LOA, the spectacular motor sailor yacht Project Atlas is a result of an excellent partnership between H2 Yacht Design and Laurent Giles Superyacht Architects. The contemporary 110m 5 deck superyacht Project Atlas form is complimented by the sail arrangement, demonstrating the potential in merging Superyacht volume with the graceful elegance of a sailing yacht.

Atlas megayacht

When using both motor and sails the 110m megayacht Atlas can cruise easily at 16 knots with a possible fuel saving of between 40% and 60%, coupled with an equivalent increase in range.

Heeling is limited to maintain the comfort expectations and characteristics of a motor powered superyacht Project Atlas. Stabilisation under power and at anchor is provided by retractable active stabilisers, however, underway the natural damping of the sails offers energy free stabilisation.

Power is provided by a diesel electric power plant and is designed to be totally flexible with the sail power. The diesel electric combination can alone power the Project Atlas yacht to a maximum speed of 18 knots with a range without sail assist of 8000 Nmiles.

72m megayacht STELLA MARIS by VSY to premiere at Monaco Yacht Show

July 11, 2012

Boasting a new look as well as a brand-new stand in Parvis Piscine, VSY, the Italian shipyard well known as a leading yacht-manufacturer and winner of prominent international awards, will be present at the upcoming Monaco Yacht Show, exhibiting for the very first its 72m motor yacht Stella Maris. Naturally, their new look will be in line with the yard’s values and will represent the combination of avant-garde technology and the excellence of genuine Italian craftsmanship in the total respect of the environment, thanks to plenty of eco-sustainable systems installed on their yachts.

72m motor yacht STELLA MARIS by VSY-Viareggio Superyachts

72m motor yacht STELLA MARIS by VSY

After the resounding success of the two previous 62-metre luxury vessels, superyacht Candyscape II and megayacht RoMa, this year their 72-metre flagship Stella Maris superyacht will make her debut. Scheduled for launching in July, she represents a definite step forward for the yard and, being the largest yacht built in Viareggio over the last 30 years, she is destined to be a point of reference for the yachting world.

72m megayacht Stella Maris – entrusted to the expertise of the architect Espen Øino in cooperation with Laurent Giles Naval Architects – is blending traditional elements of design and layout with new variations on a theme – such as the staggered internal decks, the heights of the saloons and the innovative form of the bow. The resulting layout ensures a volume, more usually seen in yachts of greater dimensions, of 2,270 GRT.

Stella Maris yacht is equipped with a certified helideck, making her the only vessel of her size with this facility, a deck for the exclusive use of guests, a separate Owner’s deck, saloons with a finished height of 270 cm and the pleasure – which must surely be an exclusive novelty – of enjoying green landscapes at sea with real house-plants crossing the decks.

VSY luxury yacht STELLA MARIS

VSY luxury yacht STELLA MARIS

Concepts of the internal and external spaces are interpreted in a very unconventional way. For example, in the two main saloons and the Owner’s cabin, there are spectacular walls entirely of glass, thus allowing the eye to see and enjoy beyond what would normally be a rigid barrier.

A certified helideck and a sundeck, conceived also for evening use with suitable atmospheric lighting, are featured by essential materials and colour tones reminiscent of a Mediterranean beach which is even more emphasized by the large beach area located near the water.

The interior design by Studio Reverberi is based on simple lines but refined, embellished with natural stones, fabrics and veneers that spell freshness, lightness and luminosity where the external and internal ambiences merge.

The new 72-metre yacht Stella Maris is yet another example of VSY’ ability to interpret the most exclusive ideas of an Owner, even the most demanding one highly sensitive to environmental matters, creating leisure crafts where living at sea is an unimaginable privilege and pleasure.

The use of glass on the 72m motor yacht Stella Maris by Viareggio Superyachts

December 14, 2011

VSY-Viareggio Superyachts Managing Director Federico Bennewitz, explained how to overcome the technical challenges of using glass as a construction material on the 72-metre superyacht Stella Maris at the latest Super Yacht Design Symposium held in October in Palm Beach.

VSY motor yacht Stella Maris

VSY motor yacht Stella Maris

Invited to join the speakers’ panel on “The use of glass on super yachts”, Bennewitz shared with the audience some of the problems faced and the solutions taken in order to meet with the client’s main wishes to have a villa-like feeling on the yacht Stella Maris, to maximize the pleasure of life on board in all seasons of the year, to assure the best privacy for himself and his guests and to have a certified helideck.

The Stella Maris yacht project – entrusted to the expertise of the architect Espen Øino in cooperation with Laurent Giles Naval Architects – has in fact been developed to blend traditional elements of design and layout with new variations on a theme – such as the staggered internal decks, the ceiling height in the main saloons raised to 270 cm and the large glass walls and windows.

VSY Motor yacht STELLA MARIS - MAIN SALOON

VSY Motor yacht STELLA MARIS - MAIN SALOON

The internal and external spaces of yacht Stella Maris has in fact been interpreted in a very unconventional way, introducing spectacular glass walls, such as in the two main saloons and the Owner’s cabin, thus allowing the eye to see and enjoy beyond what would normally be a rigid barrier.

To implement the owner’s vision entirely, a climate-controlled veranda and a vertical garden have also been included, to enjoy green landscapes at sea with real house-plants crossing the decks, besides providing home-size furniture for the interior.

VSY Superyacht STELLA MARIS - UPPER SALOON

VSY Superyacht STELLA MARIS - UPPER SALOON

All of this has meant confronting a list of substantial challenges, like: weight increase and naval architecture, reduced glass thermal insulation, acoustic protection and privacy, structural design and selection and specifications of the type of glass to be used, especially considering that the yacht is also equipped with a certified helideck.

The very good results obtained on the Stella Maris superyacht, currently under construction and to be launched for the coming season, are leading VSY to consider a new family feeling represented by a design based on a “villa on the sea” concept, including large glass walls to be used onboard.

The Difference.

Extreme avant-garde technology, maniacal attention to detail, timeless design, total fulfilment of the customer’s wishes, real environmental protection, high respect for the workforce health and safety: this is the essence of VSY-Viareggio Superyachts’ philosophy of work on all fronts. Since 2004 the shipyard based in Italy’s focal yacht building area, Viareggio, has been engaged in building mega-yachts of over 60 metres and is by now widely recognized as builders of the highest calibre – already winning prestigious international awards with their first 62-metre charter yacht Candyscape II.

At VSY the best expression of luxury and comfort is however achieved in the respect of the marine environment on all fronts, obtaining strict and prestigious Certifications such as the RINA Green Star Plus Gold, ABS ES (Environment Safety) and Lloyd’s EP (Environmental Protection).

The long list of features and care they put into their Total Eco-Yachts is impressive:

- wide use of recyclable materials;

- redundancy also for the system of water treatment able to produce biologically transparent and odorless discharges running on 2 units;

- electric auxiliary engines for use in harbor and wherever it is advisable to avoid running of the main engine, resulting in a vastly reduced environmental impact, especially in terms of noise;

- a Green Anchoring system to station the yacht by dynamic positioning in those areas where traditional anchoring is forbidden because potentially damaging, for example, to coral reefs and Scandinavian fjords;

- installation of last generation particle filters for the highest possible smoke reduction in the exhaust system;

- recycling of the heat from the generator exhausts to produce hot water on board;

- study and definition of an eco-productive maintenance system for continuous integrated monitoring (extended to post-delivery) of the eco-systems and appliances installed, providing also a dedicated ergonomic training software platform for the manning of the yacht.

This results in a simple but effective formula: Maximum Efficiency on Minimum Energy – with Limited Damage to the eco-system. All of this is in pursuit of VSY’S essential mission: to produce a few but exclusive super-yachts, totally custom-built, innovative and technologically superlative. Simply unique yachts which fully embrace the Yard’s Eco Green vision, introducing the new exclusive concept of “deeper luxury”.

Following the great success of their 62-metre, superyacht Candyscape II and motor yacht Roma, VSY-Viareggio Superyachts are now busy completing their next two super yachts: a 72-metre flagship scheduled for the 2012 season, and a 64-metre at present awaiting the discerning client for completion in 2013.

Icon Yachts 85m Britannia megayacht concept by H2 Design

September 09, 2011

Following the launch of the 50m motor yacht platform at last year’s Monaco show, ICON Yachts approached H2 Yacht Design with a brief to develop an 85m megayacht concept based on the ICON platform design.

H2 ICON 85m Britannia superyacht

H2 ICON 85m Britannia superyacht

The exterior styling and GA of the ICON 85m Britannia yacht was developed by H2 design. Laurent Giles Superyacht Architects were commissioned to provide the initial technical input required to start a new platform design. The vessel is compliant with the latest MCA Passenger Yacht Code, with a nominal capacity for 18-20 guests.

The exterior styling of this new 85m concept focuses on a pure, uncluttered linear design style. The crisp chamfers and sharp edges contrasted by the flowing organic form of the superstructure combine to produce a timeless profile with a distinctive design element linking the hull to the bridge deck aft.

“The design is radical yet conservative, contemporary yet timeless. Our aim was to produce a design with wide market appeal and character to make it individual and be recognisable as an Icon product.” explains Jonny Horsfield Founder ofH2 Design

Inside, centrally located tender garages release valuable space from the aft, allowing for the renowned Icon beach club arrangement. On this concept a central pool, spa and gym facilities are accommodated. Other interior features include a circular dining room, enclosed by full height glass and curved spine stairs. Panoramic views out over the aft bridge deck and light from the glass bottomed Jacuzzi above make for an impressive entertaining space.
