The Rhode Island Langan Design Wins Superyacht Award for yacht Calliope

May 17, 2011

The NEWPORT, Rhode Island based Langan Design Partners has announced that Calliope, the latest motor yacht from the office’s drawing boards, has won the World Super Yacht Award for the best Three-Deck Semi-Displacement or Planing Motor Yacht.

Yacht Calliope

This award comes as a fitting tribute to the company’s founder, the late Bill Langan of Jamestown, R.I., who led the design of this project from its initial conceptual phase in 2006 all the way to her launch in early summer of 2010. Bill passed away in late 2010 following a two year battle with Leukemia.

Designed for a longstanding client, this motor yacht can take her owner and eight guests to the most remote regions of the planet. Powered by two diesel engines delivering almost two thousand horsepower each, she has a top speed of 16.5 knots and a range of 1900 nautical miles. The classic and airy interior was designed by the Rhoades Young office of Lymington, England. The interior decoration and soft goods are by Candace Langan Design – also based in Newport — whose principal Candy Langan is Bill’s wife. Calliope was built at the Holland Jachtbouw shipyard, in the Netherlands. Her maiden voyage last summer to took her north to the fjords of Norway, and she can now be found cruising European waters for the summer.

Based in Newport, Rhode Island, Langan Design Partners is an internationally recognized full-service naval architecture and yacht design office with the capacity to take on all aspects of the development of luxury yachts and commercial vessels from early concept to detailed engineering, incorporating 3D modeling, interior and exterior styling, performance and sea-keeping analysis.

Feature Superyacht: Calliope Yacht

January 21, 2011

Calliope Yacht is a 42 metre Holland Jachtbouw superyacht with customised grace and form which was built to Lloyds and MCA regulations in Holland. She is an all-aluminium ‘gentlemen’s yacht’ with a cruising speed of around 15.5 knots as launched in 2010. Her exterior design and naval architecture as created by Bill Langan Design Associates which is a yacht design firm based in Newport, Rhode Island which specialises in designing unique yachts for special clients. Yacht Calliope also had her interior design, which features weathered limed oak, produced on the boards of Dick Young Designs.

Motor yacht Calliope was ordered by a repeat client and she is the second semi-displacement motor yacht commissioned by the same owners at Holland Jachtbouw. This particular yacht owner was one with yachting experience and with a very specific set of requirements in terms of customisation and quality. Indeed, the owner had no desire for compromise such as would enable taking the semi-custom or series yacht route. The yachting experience which has gone into Calliope means that she is a functional yacht which is very well suited to sue as a luxury charter yacht or as a private one.

Holland Jachtbouw Managing Director Paul Dielemans comments that: “The fact that this project will be built for an existing client is very satisfying. We are delighted when owners are so pleased with the quality and performance of their previous yacht that they choose to partner with us again. It is also a great chance for the yard to build upon an existing relationship and create a new yacht to the next level of sophistication, putting both the owner’s and our own experiences into practice.”

At just under 500 GT, the project matches Holland Jachtbouw’s preferred position in the superyacht market. “This type of fully customised powerboat puts clear water between our yard and the competition,” Dielemans continues. “Along with the recent order of the 62-metre schooner Athos, it shows that Holland Jachtbouw’s business plan is in sync with the demands of sailing and motor yacht connoisseurs alike. Moreover, our state-of-the-art new facilities will be used to the utmost efficiency when opened in September 2007.”

The first yacht owner by the owner of Calliope was the 32 metre flybridge cruiser called Cassiopeia which was launched to considerable acclaim in 2004. Both yachts are named after goddesses, with M/Y Calliope being the muse of music and epic poetry.

Timelessly stylish both inside and out, the Calliope yacht has been built and finished to a remarkable standard of quality. With her Bill Langan design, Rhoades Young interior and major input from an experienced owner, this fully customised powerboat impresses in every way.

Some of the Key Facets of Motor Yacht Calliope Include:

Relaxation and comfort :
Interior designer Rhoades Young devised an exceptionally relaxed lounge and dining area on the main deck, with a hidden sliding shoji screen to split the two spaces when intimate dining is required. Located forward, the owners’ stateroom includes a private library, full beam lounge and his & her bathrooms with dressing rooms. This splendid area is flooded with natural light and has a strong visual connection with the outside world.

Calliope‘s elegant modern-classic interior is finished in weathered limed oak, which contrasts elegant classical architecture with a range of modern furniture. One of the most impressive features is the offset reverse spiral staircases, which dynamically connect all three decks. Panoramic views up through the sweeping undersides of the steps make this a striking centrepiece to the yacht and make her into an ideal charter platform.

Customisation:
Teak is the predominant word on superyacht Calliope’s bridge deck, with the sky lounge making the most of the full beam. With the large sliding doors open to the aft deck, the entire deck and saloon blend into a united ‘inside-out’ zone that is ideal for informal leisure at anchor.  Designed and built to Lloyds and MCA classification, Calliope reaffirms that Holland Jachtbouw is eminently capable of creating bespoke motoryachts of the highest calibre.

Commissioned by the owners of the 32-metre flybridge cruiser Cassiopeia, completed by HJB in 2004, this all-aluminium ‘gentlemen’s yacht’ has a cruising speed of 15.5 knots. Combining all the client’s cruising experiences with the very latest thinking in motoryacht construction, shemeets a raft of specific demands in terms of customisation and quality, including a highly specified and fully integrated bridge.

The exterior luxury yacht design and naval architecture is by Langan Design Associates, with an elegant modern-classic interior from the boards of Rhoades Young. Showcasing high-end weathered limed oak, the interior contrasts classical architecture with a range of carefully chosen modern furniture. One of the most dramatic features is a pair of offset reverse spiral staircases, which provide a dynamic connection to the three decks. Vistas up through the sweeping undersides of the steps make this a striking centrepiece to the yacht.

The superyacht’s main deck consists of a very relaxed and comfortable lounge and dining area, with a hidden sliding shoji screen to split the two spaces when more intimate dining is required. The forward owners’ stateroom includes a private library, full beam lounge area and separate bathrooms with dressing rooms. This splendid area is flooded with natural light and has a strong visual connection with the outside world.

Teak is the predominant word on the bridge deck, with the sky lounge making the most of the full beam. Once the large sliding doors are opened to the aft deck, the entire deck and saloon blend into a united ‘inside-out’ zone that is ideal for informal relaxation at anchor.

More images and photos of this luxury motor yacht will be posted in due course.
