AB116 Yacht DIAMOND with interior design by Guido de Groot

March 11, 2013

The prestigious International Superyacht Society (ISS) Design and Leadership Awards annually recognize individuals as well as companies for their expertise, leadership and dedication to raising the standards of design, building, maintenance, repair and operation of large yachts. It is a remarkable achievement in itself to be nominated as a finalist in these most competitive super yacht awards in the industry. Last year, Guido de Groot Design has been listed with the AB116 Yacht DIAMOND.

AB 116 superyacht

AB 116 superyacht

Motor yacht Diamond features a split level main salon, which follows the AB tradition of creating large vertical spaces ahead of the helm position. The yacht features a generous full beam master cabin, with a spacious bathroom, and relaxation lounge. She also has a fitness room that can be converted in a twin cabin, a further two twin cabins and a VIP double cabin. Her contemporary interior can be described as uncomplicated without being minimalist, with light colours and contrasting finishes.

Like the other yachts built by AB Yachts, the 116 superyacht Diamond is built using materials borrowed from the aerospace industry, which ensure light weight, yet high strength and solidity. She displays the sleek, tapered and harmonious lines of an open, emphasized by an iridescent, lightly gilded livery. There’s also a flying bridge, though this is almost invisible to onlookers.

AB116 luxury yacht Diamond is powered by three MTU 16V2000 M93 CR engines, producing 2400 HP each, with 3 MJP water jets that allow the new AB 116 to reach a maximum speed of 46 knots with the utmost confidence and total absence of vibrations.

ISS Fabien Cousteau Blue Award for Chicago’s 31st St. Harbor Superyacht Marina

November 23, 2012

The prominent International Superyacht Society (ISS) Fabien Cousteau Blue Award went to the Chicago Park District and its harbor manager, Westrec Marinas, for Chicago’s 31st St. Harbor, the world’s most energy efficient and green superyacht marina.

The ISS Fabien Cousteau Blue Award celebrates stewardship of marine ecosystems. Environmental leadership, global oceanic conservation and resource preservation are prerequisites for nomination. The integration of environmental technologies and resource management with the goal of setting achievable standards and models for wide adaptation in the design, engineering and building of large yachts—and the use of the Earth’s waterways—are essential criteria. Nominations are made by owners and the yachting industry; selection is by a panel of judges, including Fabien Cousteau.

“The 31st St. Harbor is a forward-thinking, world class facility that was built with sustainability in mind,” said Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO Michael Kelly. “The response from boaters and park users has been fantastic.”

“On behalf of Westrec and the Chicago Park District, we want to thank Fabien Cousteau and the International Superyacht Society for this prestigious award,” said Scott Stevenson, Executive Vice President of Westrec Marinas. “We view 31st St. Harbor as a model for sustainability in our industry.”

Chicago is home to the largest harbor system in the U.S., and 31st St. Harbor opened as the 10th and newest in May 2012. The newly developed area is adjacent to 31st St. Beach and features numerous amenities for the neighborhood, including a state-of-art playground as well as green space.

The development embraces environmental and social sustainability, designed to achieve a minimum LEED Silver certification. With a community focus, the project includes a 3/4-acre green space, a 63,300-square foot accessible green roof, a great lawn, a fully accessible play area and a community room.

A harbor services building and attached parking garage were built atop former surface lots. A geothermal heating system helps achieve a 33% energy use reduction. The green roof reduces impervious surface, storm water runoff and the heat island effect. Additional environmental benefits were achieved through enhanced refrigerant management, low flow plumbing fixtures (with a 63% water savings overall and 40.4% in building water savings), sensored lighting and delighting in 100% of the occupied spaces.

Native plantings reduce maintenance and irrigation demands. Improved pedestrian and vehicular circulation enhances connections to adjacent neighborhoods, while the green roof and the infill park 500 feet off the shoreline provide exceptional views of the lake and skyline.

The $103 million harbor was funded entirely by boater fees, and not tax payer dollars, expanding upon recreation and leisure opportunities for the surrounding community. In addition, it offers a beautiful green public space with shaded picnic areas, as well as an innovative playground that boasts a climbing wall and public art.

31st St. Harbor features 1,000 floating slips, which will reduce the wait list for a slot at one of Chicago’s harbors. The new harbor has room for yachts that measure up to 200 feet, and the slips have power, water and cable TV.

Additional amenities include a fuel dock; indoor parking garage with heated winter boat storage; public fishing dock; public parking on Fort Dearborn plus a remote parking lot; launch ramp; and a huge rubble mound breakwater.

The massive breakwater stretches more than 3,000 feet with an opening to the southeast. The breakwater is constructed of stones, some weighing as much as 18 tons, and was engineered to protect the harbor from waves as tall as 35 feet. The new breakwater protected the harbor from the recent harsh conditions due to Hurricane Sandy.

The new harbor also creates valuable habitat for marine organisms, particularly fish. Under the new breakwater, a culvert was designed to increase circulation and to create a “fish highway” similar to a feature of Burnham Harbor, a mile north of 31st Street. Additionally, a number of trees were submerged along a section of the breakwater to attract fish.

NZ Millennium Cup 2013 Superyachts to bring economic benefits to New Zealand

November 16, 2012

Next February in Auckland will be marked by arrival of luxury superyachts that will participate in the 2013 NZ Millennium Cup, taking place on the waters of the Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf. These spectacular yachts, all at least 30 meters long, are likely to bring with them a strong economic boost for both the New Zealand marine industry as well as the city as a whole.

They will moor in the Viaduct Harbour in downtown Auckland, their owners and guests enjoying the nearby restaurants, bars and shops. Their captains and crew will also take advantage of NZ world-class marine industry, ensuring their sophisticated vessels are maintained to the very highest of standards.

And, as international research shows, while here, the fleet will make a very significant contribution to NZ economy.

Earlier this year, the Superyacht Intelligence Agency produced a detailed, economic impact report on superyacht expenditure. It showed that the average superyacht spend is around $2.6 million a year. More importantly, it showed that superyachts, like those due here next February, have a positive and significant economic impact on the countries they visit.

“The important contribution made by superyachts to New Zealand should not be overlooked,” stresses Ellie Brade, editor of Superyacht Intelligence and Pacific Editor at the highly-respected The Superyacht Group.

“New Zealand has a sterling reputation as a superyacht construction, refit and cruising destination.”

Brade says events like the NZ Millennium Cup produce many benefits. They give the local superyacht industry a platform on which to showcase their work to the world. They also help attract more superyachts here.

According to the NZ Millennium Cup’s Amy Welch, a single yacht undertaking refit work injects an average of $NZ6million into the local economy, while a yacht being built here from scratch will average out at about $NZ40million.

Even those yachts that do not undertake work make a significant contribution.

“Each superyacht generates approximately $NZ1million in economic benefit to Auckland, and to New Zealand, just as a result of being in our waters,” she says.

Planning for the 2013 New Zealand NZ Millennium Cup comes as local superyacht manufacturers bask in the glory of yet more international awards.

At the recent International Superyacht Society (ISS) awards in Florida, the 30–metre sailing superyacht Antares III, built by Yachting Developments in Hobsonville, won the award for the Best Sailing Superyacht in the 24-40 metre category. They also won the Best Refit 2012 Award for their comprehensive refurbishment of the classic 1934 America’s Cup J Class charter yacht Endeavour.

At the same awards, the world renowned superyacht yard, Alloy Yachts, which is based in Henderson, won the ISS Award for the Best Sailing Superyacht over 40 metres for their 67.2-metre megayacht Vertigo. An incredible 19 Alloy Yachts’ vessels have now won international superyacht awards.

Among the yachts confirmed for the 2013 New Zealand NZ Millennium Cup is sailing yacht Ohana, a new vessel built by New Plymouth’s Fitzroy Yachts and a generating huge buzz in the global industry, and superyacht Silvertip, winner of both the 2011 and 2012 New Zealand NZ Millennium Cups.

Marcel Onkenhout of Oceanco receives ‘International Superyacht Society’s Excellence in Innovation Award’

November 16, 2012

Marcel Onkenhout, CEO of Oceanco, was honoured with the ‘International Superyacht Society’s Excellence in Innovation Award’ at their annual Gala that took place on the 25th of October, 2012, during the Fort International Lauderdale Boat Show. The award, open to every aspect of the marine industry, recognizes an individual or business that has demonstrated innovation in their endeavours within the previous year.

Onkenhout has been highly original in his team development and business management and has taken the company forward with innovative thinking. The ISS acknowledged that, while other successful top yards have had generations of success to lean on, Oceanco, through Marcel’s steady leadership and creative thinking, is standing head to head with the industry’s longest-established and most respected yards. Oceanco’s maxim “Yachts for Visionary Owners” clearly extends itself now to visionary management.

In his acceptance speech at the podium in front of the entire yachting industry, which included wide-ranging superyacht builders, designers, owners, captains and many others, Onkenhout chose to accept the award on behalf of the Oceanco team. He also explained that for Oceanco, innovation was finding better ways to do things—being more creative in design, finding new ways to build yachts, and providing better after sales service.

Onkenhout went on to say that he thought the most important innovation at Oceanco has been the creation of a positive working relationship with Oceanco’s clients, co-makers as well as with its employees and the industry. This is not the first time Oceanco has been recognized by the ISS. In 2008, Oceanco’s 82m charter yacht Alfa Nero received the award for best power yacht 65m+ and then in 2010, their 85.5m superyacht Sunrays received an award in the same category.
