“It is a wonderful tribute to the quality of the Moonen craftsmen and the ingenuity of the design and engineering teams that Northlander has won this prestigious award,” says Emile Bilterijst, Managing Director of Moonen Shipyards. “As one of the largest vessels we have launched to date, the Moonen 124 incorporates all the decades of know-how at our yard. It also confirms our belief that this is one of the best motor-yachts of her size available on the market today.

Recognised as a benchmark for superlative achievement, the awards were presented on 28 October at the 20th Anniversary of ISS’s Awards Gala in Fort Lauderdale. Motor yacht Northlander  had made her first Atlantic crossing to take part in FLIBS, and her captain Peter Davey reported that the first Moonen 124 handled the very challenging seas and weather conditions exceptionally well.

Styled by René van der Velden, Northlander has a gracefully balanced bow and stern, eye-catching fashion plates and a low superstructure profile. She offers the comfort, elegance and class of a 38-metre superyacht, while still retaining the intimate details that set Moonen Yachts  apart. Naval architect Stolk Marimecs was responsible for the smooth lines below the waterline, which ensure both comfort at sea and low fuel consumption levels.

Moonen motor yacht Northlander’s interior was designed by Art-Line and makes full use of her significant volume. With countless features attractive to owners, guests, captains and crew, the Moonen 124 is ideal for charter and private use.

The yard is currently building an even larger yacht for a repeat owner: The first Moonen 133, complete with her own submarine, is scheduled for delivery in 2012.

Callender Designs win the 2010 ISS Excellence in Innovation Award

September 28, 2010

The Design Director of UK based Callender Designs, Alastair Callender was announced as the winner of the Excellence in Innovation Award category during the 2010 Monaco Yacht Show. The award is part of the prestigious Award of Distinction and was voted by the Board of Directors of the International Superyacht Society (ISS).

Alastair Callender said, “This Excellence in Innovation award is a real honour to receive: to have my name and design work recognised in this way is tremendous. I am looking forward to an exciting career in the yacht design industry.”

The Monaco Yacht Club was a fitting venue to announce Alastair as the winner of this category. It was here – one year ago – the 190 foot Soliloquy eco-design concept, was displayed during the 2009 Monaco Yacht Show week.

“Innovation is essential to future business and the development of the industry as a whole.
I hope by coupling beautiful aesthetics with a novel, sustainable design approach, the Green Agenda will also be supported through the work that we do as designers.”

Alastair‟s career has been going from strength-to-strength, after receiving numerous international accolades over the last 12 months, including winning the esteemed Condé Nast International Innovation and Design Award in May 2010, for Sustainable Design.

“It is a wonderful award from the ISS, especially in the knowledge that my design work was voted for by professionals within the superyacht industry.”

All recipients of the ISS Awards of Distinction will be presented their awards during the ISS International Awards for Design & Leadership Gala, held on the opening night of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October 2010.

Although the multi-award winning Soliloquy superyacht remains a concept at present, the Callender Designs studio are positive that this super-green superyacht, with technology supplied by Solar Sailor Ltd; or other recent yacht design enquires, will soon be taken through further development, and into reality.

September 09, 2010

ISS (International Superyacht Society) today releases its lists of finalists for the 2010 International Design Awards. For 20 years, ISS’s Design Awards—based entirely on peer review—has celebrated the very finest naval architecture, design, interiors, engineering and builds the large yacht industry presents annually.

Each year, nominees are submitted to ISS by the large yacht industry’s leading builders, designers and stewards. The categories are as follows:

Power: (3) awards for size categories 24m-40m, 40m-65m, 65m+

Interior Design: (1) award for power or sail

Vibrant Curiosity super yacht

The individual selection of five finalists in each award grouping results from the privilege to vote that ISS membership affords. A distinguished and impartial group of judges then weighs the qualifications of each yacht with the winning yachts announced at ISS’s annual International Design Awards Gala, this year on Thursday, 28 October from 7:00 P.M. at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort, Fort Lauderdale.

ISS also recognizes achievement in the business and service of superyachts. During the Gala, ISS Awards of Distinction—Business(Person) of the Year and Innovation Awards as well as the Leadership Award and Distinguished Crew Award—are presented.

The ISS Business (Person) of the Year is awarded to those demonstrating excellence in their area of superyacht expertise within the previous year; nominations come from both the industry and the ISS board with the board making the finalist selections. Previous honourees have included Frans Heesen, Heesen Yachts and John Dane, Trinity Yachts.

Open to every aspect of the industry—from crew training to technological advances to environmental stewardship—the Excellence in Innovation award is given to an individual or business that has demonstrated innovation in their endeavours. Nominations come from the industry and ISS board members vote to determine finalists. In 2009 and 2008 respectively, Carlisle and Finch and Agrimond were awarded the Excellence in Innovation honour.

ISS’s Leadership Award recognizes an individual or business whose distinctive work and commitment to the industry has contributed—over a substantial period of time—to the sustainable growth of the superyacht community worldwide. Nominations and selection for The Leadership Award are made by those who have received the award in previous years with the previous year’s winner presiding; this year, the chairmanship honour goes to Tony Hambrook, Alloy Yachts.

The Distinguished Crew Award is presented in years when the DCA award judges are presented with a nomination that represents the essence of the award (nominations are sought industry-wide). Specifically, these honours are designed to recognize yacht crew whose distinguished acts of service best exemplify the standards to which professional yacht crew aspire.

ISS’s Business (Person) of the Year and Innovation of the Year winners will also be honoured at the Meeting of the Associations in Monaco on Wednesday, 22 September 2010.

ISS would like to acknowledge the invaluable, and continuing, support of its gala event sponsors—Robb Report, Show Management, The Yacht Report Group, Westrec Marinas and Wright Maritime Group.

Mainstay Event of the Monaco Yacht Show Bolstered by Superlative Sponsorship

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA and Antibes, France: The International Superyacht Society (ISS) and Professional Yachtsmen’s Association (PYA) are pleased to announce that they are co-hosting one of the must do events during the Monaca Yacht Show, the Meeting of the Associations, again being held at the prestigious Yacht Club de Monaco on Wednesday 22 September 2010 from 17.00-20.00 hrs.

The event, now in its fourth year, is one of the Monaco Yacht Show’s greatest opportunities to network and to enjoy food and wine in a most breathtaking environment. Made possible entirely by the staunch support of PYA and ISS Sponsors, this year’s supporters include some of the most recognizable brands in the large yacht industry: BlackStar, DuPont, Global Marine Communications (GMC) and Viking Recruitment.

In a challenging economic climate, organizations like ISS and PYA rely on the unwavering commitment of companies like these whose support enables the associations to create dynamic networking functions which are more critical than ever to the success of the large yacht industry.

“A few years ago, you might have got by without needing to attend mixers but now forging meaningful business to business relationships is perhaps the jewel in the marketing crown,” says Andrew Schofield, PYA’s President. “The willingness of BlackStar, DuPont, GMC and Viking to provide funding so that we can host our colleagues at a venue like the Yacht Club de Monaco is a testimony to their understanding of the way our industry works,” he continues.

Over the years, the Meeting of the Associations has also featured an International Wine Tasting which is also supported fully by sponsorship. Representing French, Italian and New World wines respectively, PYA and ISS welcome back Froggy Gourmet, SO.SE.MA and Shore Solutions as returning and committed supporters of the event.

“In 2009, then ISS President, Lance Cushion, both attended and presented at the Conference. For 2010, he brought the idea of a partnership between ISS and the conference and its organizers, IYG, before ISS’s executive leadership. We unanimously and wholeheartedly endorse the undertaking and are proud to be a partner in the endeavour,” says Bob Saxon, current ISS President.

The inaugural event included 150 superyachting professionals from 30 countries; initiatives presented and discussed resulted in a number of significant developments in the Asian superyachting industry. The partnership between ASC and ISS—through which ISS is presented as an Accredited Association—is one of mutual respect with benefits developed for ISS members and conventioneers. In addition to communications efforts to maximize the importance of the conference, ISS is also able to offer its members a 5% discount on the Delegate and Workshop fees. Members interested in attending and realizing this discount should contact Amy Halsted, ISS Executive Director at seagourmet@toad.net or 540.784.4561.
