Designed to do very well in the light airs of the Mediterranean, the 45m sailing yacht will include a number of special features that reflect the owner’s rich experience and the ingenuity of the yard that will build his latest acquisition. Highlights include a fully automatic Bimini and dodger, a double hinging transom door/swim platform, and a telescopic lifting keel that has been designed in such a way that it will not interfere with the interior layout.

Holland Jachtbouw superyacht Calliope wins at World Superyacht Award

May 09, 2011

Holland Jachtbouw have announced that their most recent motor yacht launch, the 42-metre superyacht Calliope, has won the World Super Yacht Award for Best Three-deck Semi-displacement or Planing Motor Yacht. The award ceremony took place in the suitably splendid surroundings of the Guildhall in London on the evening of May 7, where the management team from Holland Jachtbouw were on hand to pick up the prestigious Neptune trophy.

“Seeing the incredibly high standard of the nominees for this award it is truly an honour for us that superyacht Calliope was chosen as winner by our industry peers,” says Tako van Ineveld, Director at Holland Jachtbouw. “The other boats in the category were all built by dedicated powerboat yards who specialise in this field. It is unique that Holland Jachtbouw, which has made its name for creating famous sail yachts like Windrose and Athos, can also win such an award for only our second motoryacht. This speaks volumes for the excellence of the yard’s building team and the way we have been able to incorporate sailing yacht standards of finish and fine detailing into the fully custom motorboat environment.”

Another major reason for the success of motor yacht Calliope is of course the exquisite design by Bill Langan, who sadly passed away just after the yacht was completed. “It was both a pleasure and a privilege to work with Bill on one of his final projects,” adds Van Ineveld. “This award is a testimony to his abiding legacy of design excellence.”

Feature Superyacht: Calliope Yacht

January 21, 2011

Calliope Yacht is a 42 metre Holland Jachtbouw superyacht with customised grace and form which was built to Lloyds and MCA regulations in Holland. She is an all-aluminium ‘gentlemen’s yacht’ with a cruising speed of around 15.5 knots as launched in 2010. Her exterior design and naval architecture as created by Bill Langan Design Associates which is a yacht design firm based in Newport, Rhode Island which specialises in designing unique yachts for special clients. Yacht Calliope also had her interior design, which features weathered limed oak, produced on the boards of Dick Young Designs.

Motor yacht Calliope was ordered by a repeat client and she is the second semi-displacement motor yacht commissioned by the same owners at Holland Jachtbouw. This particular yacht owner was one with yachting experience and with a very specific set of requirements in terms of customisation and quality. Indeed, the owner had no desire for compromise such as would enable taking the semi-custom or series yacht route. The yachting experience which has gone into Calliope means that she is a functional yacht which is very well suited to sue as a luxury charter yacht or as a private one.

Holland Jachtbouw Managing Director Paul Dielemans comments that: “The fact that this project will be built for an existing client is very satisfying. We are delighted when owners are so pleased with the quality and performance of their previous yacht that they choose to partner with us again. It is also a great chance for the yard to build upon an existing relationship and create a new yacht to the next level of sophistication, putting both the owner’s and our own experiences into practice.”

At just under 500 GT, the project matches Holland Jachtbouw’s preferred position in the superyacht market. “This type of fully customised powerboat puts clear water between our yard and the competition,” Dielemans continues. “Along with the recent order of the 62-metre schooner Athos, it shows that Holland Jachtbouw’s business plan is in sync with the demands of sailing and motor yacht connoisseurs alike. Moreover, our state-of-the-art new facilities will be used to the utmost efficiency when opened in September 2007.”

The first yacht owner by the owner of Calliope was the 32 metre flybridge cruiser called Cassiopeia which was launched to considerable acclaim in 2004. Both yachts are named after goddesses, with M/Y Calliope being the muse of music and epic poetry.

Timelessly stylish both inside and out, the Calliope yacht has been built and finished to a remarkable standard of quality. With her Bill Langan design, Rhoades Young interior and major input from an experienced owner, this fully customised powerboat impresses in every way.

Relaxation and comfort :
Interior designer Rhoades Young devised an exceptionally relaxed lounge and dining area on the main deck, with a hidden sliding shoji screen to split the two spaces when intimate dining is required. Located forward, the owners’ stateroom includes a private library, full beam lounge and his & her bathrooms with dressing rooms. This splendid area is flooded with natural light and has a strong visual connection with the outside world.

Yachting Experience:
Launched in the summer of 2010, the 42-metre Calliope is an exceptional semi-displacement motor yacht. Commissioned by repeat clients, she combines all her owners’ rich cruising experiences onboard Cassiopeia with the very latest thinking in superyacht construction. Innovative demands in terms of customisation and quality included a highly specified and fully integrated bridge.

Aluminium Construction:
Calliope is an all-aluminium ‘gentlemen’s yacht’ offers comfort and style in equal measure. Calliope‘s elegant modern-classic interior is finished in weathered limed oak, which contrasts elegant classical architecture with a range of modern furniture. One of the most impressive features is the offset reverse spiral staircases, which dynamically connect all three decks. Panoramic views up through the sweeping undersides of the steps make this a striking centrepiece to the yacht and make her into an ideal charter platform.

Customisation:
Teak is the predominant word on superyacht Calliope’s bridge deck, with the sky lounge making the most of the full beam. With the large sliding doors open to the aft deck, the entire deck and saloon blend into a united ‘inside-out’ zone that is ideal for informal leisure at anchor.  Designed and built to Lloyds and MCA classification, Calliope reaffirms that Holland Jachtbouw is eminently capable of creating bespoke motoryachts of the highest calibre.

WhisperPower introduces hybrid propulsion systems at Boot Dusseldorf

December 12, 2010

WhisperPower will introduce a complete range of hybrid propulsion systems from 5 to 250 kW at the Düsseldorf Boat Show, Stand 10F17.

The hybrid propulsion system is based on a high efficiency permanent DC magnet motor that powers the propeller, and a variable rpm generator with one, three, five or six cylinders (depending on the capacity) which generates electric power and charges the batteries.

The Li-ion batteries then provide the energy supply for the propulsion, hydraulics and/or other power consumers onboard, with or without the use of an inverter. The batteries can also be charged via shore power or, when using the sails, via a shaft generator.

The systems are equipped with intelligent integrated management technology. This starts the generator automatically and increases rpm when power demands increase, and slows down the rpm or switches off the generator when the power demand is reduced.

WhisperPower was recently commissioned to develop the complete hybrid power and propulsion systems for the two J Class yachts Yankee and Rainbow currently under construction at Holland Jachtbouw.

In addition to the hybrid propulsion systems WhisperPower will display 3000 rpm and 1500 rpm Whisper generators, variable speed units, maintenance-free, completely enclosed AGM, GEL and ION power batteries and numerous practical system accessories.

WhisperPower has been designing and manufacturing its renowned compact, water-cooled diesel generators in 3000 and 1500 rpm versions and from 3 to 30 kVA since 1998.

WhisperPower is a young, ambitious industrial firm in Drachten, the Netherlands. It is located in a new, modern 5,500 m² eco premises that is equipped with climate control based on an advanced eco-energy recovery system. Some 40 full-time employees are responsible for design, assembly and logistics. “WhisperPower’s mission is to enhance the energy generating industry by offering cleaner, quieter and more efficient systems,” says owner Roel Ter Heide.

WhisperPower to supply Yacht Yankee and Rainbow Yacht with Hybrid Propulsion System

October 15, 2010

Dutch power systems specialist WhisperPower has gained two orders for the supply of the entire hybrid power and propulsion systems for two J-class yachts currently under construction at Holland Jachtbouw in Zaandam, the Netherlands. The systems will be delivered mid 2011 to the 39.5 meter long Sailing Yacht RAINBOW and the recently ordered Sailing Yacht YANKEE, which have been redesigned by Dykstra & Partners Naval Architects.

The sailing yacht Yankee and SY Rainbow will be fitted with a unique WhisperPower Hybrid propulsion system allowing them to navigate at up to 5 knots and manoeuvre entirely without emissions using 2 x 288 VDC/160Ah Lithium Ion batteries (LiFeYP04). During sailing no generators are needed to control the sails as all hydraulics are powered by the same battery banks. Most of the time the on board 230/400 VAC consumers, including the air conditioning, will operate through a 35 kVA inverter via the batteries. A 50 kVA variable speed generator from WhisperPower will be installed to recharge the batteries and provide electrical power to the various loads. An auxiliary diesel engine of 294 kW is planned with a 50 kW flywheel-integrated electrical motor for electric propulsion and will double as a shaft generator when the yacht is under way, generating a maximum power of 10 kW. The systems are designed in close collaboration with Holland Jachtbouw and leading technical companies in the Netherlands.

Holland Jachtbouw to build sailing yacht Yankee

September 28, 2010

Holland Jachtbouw has proudly announced a singing of a contract for the construction of a replica of one of the most astonishing J-Class yachts ever built. The contract for the 39.5 metre super yacht Yankee was officially signed by Simon Dierdorp, the leader of the syndicate, at the 2010 Monaco Yacht Show.  Most important is now, to have the yacht Yankee ready for the J-Class regatta events in England in summer 2012. Holland Jachtbouw is also currently building the J-Class sailing yacht Rainbow.

Sailing Yacht Yankee under construction at Holland Jachtbouw

The original sailing yacht Yankee was launched in 1930 and was a three-time challenger in the preliminary rounds to defend the America’s Cup. She was designed by the legendary Frank C. Paine for John S. Lawrence and Chandler Hovey, and built at the Lawley yard in Boston, Massachusetts. Yankee was renowned for being fast in a breeze and the beamiest of her contemporaries. She also made global headlines when her navigator Elizabeth Hovey became the first woman to race a J-Class yacht in 1934. Despite her major historical importance, yacht Yankee was broken up in 1941 as part of the war effort.

The new Yankee superyacht has been redesigned by Dykstra & Partners Naval Architects by Gerard Dijkstra, following closely the original template of Frank C. Paine. In accordance with the latest J-Class Association regulations, she will be built in aluminium with a carbon mast and rigging and 3-DL sails. Constructed to Lloyds and MCA, sailing yacht Yankee will be used for both racing and chartering.

The build of the hull will begin in October 2010 at Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw in Makkum (NL) for delivery to Holland Jachtbouw in 2011. Yankee‘s unique propulsion setup will include a main engine of 294 kW, a 50 kW hybrid generator and a 50 kW auxiliary generator. The interior design is based on a permanent crew of seven and, for racing purposes, accommodation in pipe cots for another 21 crew members. After the J-Class regattas in England, the plan is for Yankee yacht to be available for charter during the Olympic Games.

Holland Jachtbouw is also currently building the J-Class sailing yacht Rainbow.

Interesting superyacht newly available for charter: sailing yacht YII

July 24, 2010

The 37 metre yacht YII is now newly available for luxury yacht charters in the Mediterranean and elsewhere. Sailing yacht YII (or Y2) is a Holland Jachtbouw built sleek Dixon sloop which was launched in 2006. This good looking sail boat was the product of the first Holland Jachtbouw and the Dixon Design collaboration. The result is a a spectacular, good looking and fast cruising yacht.

The 37 m superyacht YII under sail

S/Y YII is a cruising sloop which provided charter guests with an uncluttered deck and a contemporary minimalist type overall appearance. For instance, superyacht YII has a low profile deckhouse as well as a considered range of other sleek features like her recessed headsail furlers,  through hull anchoring system, pop-up cleats, deck recessed Genoa tracks and concealed hinges for hatches. This all adds up to space and symmetry on deck.

Yacht YII has also been designed and built to sail fast and performance is another feature. Her Alustar hull and fairly frugal weight of 152 tons means her sailing performance fits hand in glove with her sleek looks. Additional, she has been fitted with a full suite of North Sails and no expense has been spared with her deck equipment and power package which has been supplied by the yachting world’s leading super sailing yacht brands.

The sail boat’s elegance has also been brought down below deck in a superb interior as designed by John Munford. Here, a modern yet distinctly warm feel is achieved by a pear and wenge wood blend with light white panels throughout. The woodwork contrasts nicely with the woven leather panels in the corridor. Yacht YII also has a crew quarters which are spacious and well appointed.

More about sailing yacht YII from Dixon Design:

This low profile, minimalist theme continues with the deck house, the concealed bimini and dodger sprayhood system and travels right down to such items as the helm consoles where buttons are out and touch screen technology is very much in.

The performance mentioned above is the result of significant amounts of design time and tank testing to prove the concept and above the water a carefully thought through rig and sail inventory. The hull design has been optimised to ensure that the keel and ballast bulb provide the maximum lift, stability and efficiency. Sailing yacht YII’s large rig provides an excellent sail area / displacement ratio and she carries a non-overlap blade headsail for power and ease of handling while a genoa reacher makes the most of light airs.

Performance in light air conditions cannot be guaranteed, no matter how good the hull or rig design, if the yacht turns out to be overweight! To ensure this did not happen throughout the design and build process we specified and monitored the strongest but lightest materials available.

Sailing yacht YII at sea in light wind

A hull and deck of ‘Alustar’ aluminium, and an interior built largely of Nomex panels ensured that the overall structure of the vessel would be very strong but light. Every piece of major, and not so major equipment, superyacht YII The 37 metre express was evaluated by us to ensure it was the most ‘weight’ effective solution.

Below decks, yacht YII has many more surprises. Fewer cabins than would normally find their way into a 37 meter yacht mean a light and airy ambiance; a light feel which is accentuated by the use of pear wood joinery. John Munford, who worked closely with us on the interior, describes the style as “light in feel, texture and weight, as required for a fast cruising yacht”. The owner and guest cabins are forward with the crew aft, a layout which worked extremely well for the owner whose previous boat was also designed by us.

Sailing yacht Y2 is our second major sailing super yacht launch in a year following on from Antares. Two very different yachts but both built to satisfy the requirements of their owners.

Yacht Rainbow’s History:

In 1934 the original Rainbow Yacht was constructed and commissioned by Harold Vanderbilt at the Nat Herreshoff yard in Bristol, New England and her design was the work of William Starling Burgess. She was named RAINBOW by Vanderbilt, who was then hoping for a better future during the great depression.  It is interesting, that yacht Rainbow is being built once again during the time of world crisis. She was built in mere 100 days,  with bronze plating on a steel frame below the waterline. Her mast measured 45 metres in length and was constructed of aluminium plates. In 1934 selection series sailing Yacht Rainbow raced against refitted veterans from 1930, such as Weetamoe and Yankee. Yacht Rainbow won the series with helmsmen Mike Vanderbilt and Olin Stephens. The victory enabled Rainbow to successfully defend the cup against the British challenger Endeavor.
