Gold for Stephens Waring’s flagship BEQUIA Yacht at Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2013

June 17, 2013

Stephens Waring Design is thrilled to report that its flagship, the 91-foot sailing yacht Bequia, has triumphed at this year’s Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, running in the beautiful Italian yacht charter location – Porto Cervo in Sardinia. This amazing event kicks off the regatta season in the Mediterranean, and a fleet of 21 vessels, including the lovely Bequia yacht, gathered at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda to test their racing mettle.

While owner Jes Staley had Stephens Waring design Bequia yacht to take his family cruising in comfort and safety, he does enjoy a good race once or twice a year. “I have learned a lot about sailing through racing. You get to really test the boat and the sails and learn how to maneuver it and make it go fast,” says Jes. But he always keeps his eye on the goal-to be sure everyone has a great time.

Among the fleet of sleek, bold Med-style boats from the tables of the likes of Tripp, Dubois, and Phillippe Starck, superyacht Bequia was a standout with her classic Spirit of Tradition lines and golden varnished teak. But she quickly disproved the notion that classic is slow, as she racked up firsts in Day One and Day Two, outpacing rivals in Class C like the Hoek-designed Truly Classic 78 yacht Drumfire and the Dubois-designed 37-meter superyacht Genevieve.

On Day Three she found herself on the wrong side of a windshift, along with the rest of her class except Genevieve, and settled for third, behind Genevieve and the Oyster 885 luxury yacht Karibu. Conditions were delightful and challenging, ranging from lighter breezes to puffs and gusts in the mid-twenties. Racing was cancelled on Day 4 due to lack of wind.

“It was a great regatta, with super boats to race against,” said Jes after collecting his trophy. “Porto Cervo is a beautiful place, and it’s also a great win for all the guys in Maine who helped build the yacht.”

Luxury yacht Bequia was built by Brooklin Boat Yard of Brooklin, Maine, and launched in 2009.

Jes and wife Debbie enjoyed the sailing and the coastline in Sardinia so much they plan a return visit later this summer with their family to enjoy some lower-key cruising. Also on the agenda is a cruise among the Greek islands before returning to the west side of the Pond in the fall. This passage will give Jes an opportunity to realize a long-held dream-making an Atlantic crossing under sail.

Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2013: Day 1 won by sailing yachts MY SONG, VIRTUELLE and BEQUIA

June 05, 2013

Day 1 of this year’s Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta saw the sun rise early on Wednesday morning, June 5, to greet the 21 sailing superyachts, participating in this popular race. Organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) as well as Boat International Media, the event, hosted at the YCCS in the popular Italian yacht charter destination – Porto Cervo, marks the start of the Mediterranean regatta season.

The diverse fleet, ranging from the 24m Starck-styled sailing yacht Virtuelle and Hoek-designed luxury yacht Drumfire to 45m regatta regulars charter yacht Salperton IV and superyacht Saudade, and 49.7m Zefira yacht, were looking forward to racing getting underway in earnest. The fleet, which is racing under the International Super Yacht Rule (ISYR), covers a broad spectrum of superyachts, from modern classics to ocean thoroughbreds, sloops to yawls, and pure cruising yachts to those with a more performance orientated design.

The 21 yachts have been divided into three equal cruising divisions – A to C – according to their ratings, and each yacht has three ratings that can be applied depending on the windspeed on the course.

After a brief postponement the breeze filled in to around eight knots, and the patience of the yacht owners and crews was rewarded as the race committee set three courses of roughly 29, 25 and 23 nautical miles for class A to C respectively. The three courses followed roughly the same track – a short beat to a laid mark, followed by a fetch to the Mortorio islands, then a long run to Monaci, a short dog leg to the south of Caprera and then home to the finish off Porto Cervo.

By the time the fleet got to the famous Monaci rocks at the end of the run, luxury yacht Virtuelle had powered into the lead on the water, rounding the rocks and dowsing her spinnaker nearly six minutes ahead of the second yacht, 49.7m superyacht Zefira. The rest of the yachts came round in tight formation, making for a spectacular sight as the faster yachts such as 30.3m Southern Wind sailing yacht Cape Arrow began to haul in the slower yachts.

The 30.8m Oyster yacht Sarafin snuck through to take line honours for Race One, closely followed by Bequia yacht, Drumfire and the sleek 45m Baltic Yachts-built superyacht Visione. Of course, it is the corrected time that counts, and the provisional results showed that in Cruising Class A the 25.4m yacht My Song – owned by Pier-Luigi Loro Piana – had won through; Virtuelle held on to take Class B on corrected, while Bequia took the win in Class C.

‘It looks like it’s going to be a light regatta,’ said Seamas Meharg, boat captain and safety officer of Bequia yacht. ‘The lighter airs and flatter water are good for us, and today’s long downwind leg was also beneficial. We got a good start, and did well at the bottom rounding at Monaci – we ducked Zefira’s stern and managed to get inside her, staying close in to the rocks.’ Meharg will be hoping that the forecast light airs continue. ‘We’re keeping an eye on Drumfire,’ he continued, ‘and there might be a little more breeze tomorrow, but if we can hold on tomorrow we might be looking good…’

For Zefira yacht, today’s second place in Class B was a strong result – not least because she beat arch-rival charter yacht Salperton by just 10 seconds on corrected time after an epic battle that played out round nearly the whole racecourse. ‘We tried hard,’ her delighted captain, Federico Biaturri, smiled on the dock. ‘We were a bit slow on one gybe and had to tack to avoid Visione near the end which allowed Salperton to sneak over the line ahead of us, but it was a great race and we’ve been getting better and better since the start of the Dubois Cup last weekend. The owners are very happy!’

The close-fought battle with Salperton is a fine demonstration of just how accurate the ISYR rating system is getting. ‘The handicaps are getting better and better all the time,’ Biaturri commented. ‘It shows in our battle with Salperton – it’s very close and it’s just going to get better and better from here.’

Racing continues tomorrow with the first start scheduled at 12:00 and scirocco winds of 10-12 knots forecast.

A great success of Hoek designed mega yacht ATHOS at Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous 2013

April 24, 2013

This year’s Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous hosted no less than twenty top sailing superyachts as well as seven spectacular motoryachts at the lovely Caribbean yacht charter location – the British Virgin Islands. Against the amazing backdrop of Virgin Gorda, the Hoek-designed mega yacht Athos looked at her best and performed very well on the racing courses during a four-day event for owners, their families and friends organised by Boat International Media and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS).

Among the crew members being put through their paces by the testing conditions and fierce competition was Hoek Design’s very own Andre Hoek, who raced onboard sailing yacht Athos and helped her achieve second position in her division (B). Better still, Athos yacht also won the Spirit of Regatta award at the end of the event, capping off a great few days for all concerned.

Holland Jachtbouw working on refit of its 41m sailing yacht THIS IS US

April 19, 2013

Originally launched by Holland Jachtbouw in 2005, the timeless 41m charter yacht This Is Us (ex Skylge) returned to the shipyard for a well-earned refit in January 2013. Sailing yacht This Is Us is a majestic schooner, designed by acclaimed Hoek Design. She is scheduled for re-launch at the end of 2013.

Designed to be the perfect family cruising and charter yacht, superyacht This Is Us has spent the last few years taking her owners around the globe, but has also proved herself to be a favourite on the regatta circuit due to her lightweight, high-performance hull, carbon mast and sophisticated lifting keel.

Luxury charter yacht This Is Us (ex Skylge) won the 2012 St Barth’s Bucket, no mean feat considering she was up against some of the most spectacular Superyachts in the world.

St Barths Bucket Regatta 2013: A Day for Testing Teamwork

March 30, 2013

Today, March 30, saw the St. Barths Bucket Regatta 2013 kick off with pouring rain and segued into one of the windiest here yet, taking the wind gauge to 28 knots and the luxury sailing yacht Athos to speeds as high as 15,8 knots.

“Main-mast staysail up. Do not unfurl. Raise your hands if you hear me.” Captain Tony Brookes calmly called his instructions into a hand-held from one of his dual on-deck navigation stations near the aft quarter of mega yacht Athos, the 62 meter Hoek-designed Holland Jachtbouw that he commands. His crew with headsets faithfully obeyed, shooting their hands in the air before quickly jumping into action.

The owner and his rep Gary Veenman from Holland alternated at the helm, giving each other much-needed breaks from the giant wheel that played tug of war with them. Three trimmers scooted among the 40-some-odd crew, working the joy sticks on their remote control “God boxes” that controlled the hydraulic operations of winches for hoisting and dropping sails as well as sheeting them in and letting them out. For someone who normally sails 40-footers, it surely would have been something strange and wonderful to behold, but for those who regularly sail in this rarified world of superyachts it was just another approach to racing one of the most magnificent sailing yachts on the oceans today.

Athos superyacht’s closest competitor today in the Mademoiselles class at the annual St. Barths Bucket was the 55 metre twin-masted yacht Adela, the steel hulled Dykstra designed Pendennis build that represents a historically significant salvage and rebuild of the 1903 original. Adela had won this 10-boat class yesterday, the first day of racing, and won again today, crossing the finish line first, after the traditional pursuit start had the smallest and slowest boats starting first and the larger and faster boats starting at specific time intervals afterward to try and catch up.

Luxury yacht Athos, which had finished seventh yesterday, was quite pleased with a second-place finish after being fifth in the pursuit-start lineup. That moved them to fifth overall behind superyacht Zefira, charter yacht Salperton, and Lady B yacht.

“No one caught us from behind and we passed two others, so we must be doing something right,” said Athos yacht’s Brookes. “It was a hard-work race today. Windy and wet, and everyone’s uncomfortable but they still have to concentrate on the job they are doing. We had some problems (with the spinnaker hoist) but we dealt with them. It was more like the North Sea instead of the Caribbean there for a while.”

Aboard superyacht Adela, Kim “Shags” Morten conceded that the Adela team can sail well in any direction and in any conditions because they have the choice of sails to make the right calls in any given situation. “Our biggest competition is Athos; we think it comes down to the crew performance,” said Morten, adding that he has competed in every Bucket to date, the last three on Adela. “We now have top-of-the-line sails, a carbon fiber mast and a team that has sailed together in the last three superyacht regattas.”

In Grand Dames class, charter yacht Georgia rose to the top of the scoreboard after taking today’s race. Luxury yacht Blue Too, which was leading going into today, retired after a crew was injured and fell to seventh with a finish score today of 13.

In the Gazelle class, Visione maintained its first position overall with a fifth-place finish today. However, they are tied on point score (6) with both charter yacht P2 and superyacht Cape Arrow, with Unfurled yacht only one point behind.

Hanuman claimed another bullet, its third, in the J Boat class today. When asked what was different about today, tactician Kevin Burnham joked, “Nothing, we won the race!” But in all honesty, the win didn’t come easy. “The biggest challenge in pushing that type of machine around the race course (in today’s conditions) is that stuff gets shocked-waved,” said Burnham. “We blew up a kite – it just exploded into a million pieces.”

The crews on all 36 Bucket boats are glad to be back on terra firma for tonight’s pirate-themed “Bucket Bash.” The party should do its part to prepare them for tomorrow’s Wrong-Way Around (the island) Course.

An impressive display of motor yachts including Feadship‘s 63m charter yacht Lady Britt, veteran participant 46.9m luxury motor yacht Ingot by Burger Boat Company, Westport‘s 39.6m superyacht Resolute and late addition 34.1m Chief, will turn out to follow the fleet and enjoy the spectacle of the regatta.  As well as front row spectator seats from the comfort of their yachts, motor yacht owners will enjoy their own social programme alongside the sailing during the day which includes a private lunch at a luxury villa on Peter Island, sponsored by BVI Tourism.

Participating sailing yachts have taken advantage of the opportunity to fit in a day’s practice before racing commences tomorrow, and owners came together for a relaxed, welcome lunch at the beautiful Oil Nut Bay. The event officially kicks off this evening with a Welcome Cocktail and BBQ on the lawn of the YCCS Clubhouse.

Racing is scheduled to begin at 1100 (AST) tomorrow, with the current forecast suggesting a perfect day for racing with winds averaging 12 knots.

Several marine industry sponsors have already confirmed their support and recently Hoek Design renewed their agreement for the third consecutive year, “It is a great opportunity for us to meet with many of our yacht owners and see our designs compete on the water. The performance aspect of our designs is very important to us and we are always pleased to see our yachts do well on the race-course. We want to support these regattas and hopefully see more Hoek designed yachts racing. Presenting the Hoek Trophy to the highest scoring Hoek designed yacht has been very popular and adds another element of competition amongst our fleet. Palma is a wonderful place to sail, ev eryone enjoys the relaxed social environment on the dock and the first-class prize giving evening at Es Baluard Museum,” commented André Hoek.

New Hoek Design Pilot Classic 85 sailing yacht WINDHUNTER II delivered

February 28, 2013

The acclaimed Dutch design studio, Hoek Design, is delighted to announce that its first ever Pilot Classic 85 sailing yacht Windhunter II has been delivered. Constructed by the Dutch builder Aluboot for a Turkish client, Windhunter II superyacht is a magnificent vessel in her own right as well as another superb example of the increasing trend for performance yachts in this style. Hoek Design’s ‘Pilot Classic’ concept is also presently being brought to fruition in even larger sizes in major custom builds at Royal Huisman.

Aluboot superyacht Windhunter II designed by Hoek

Windhunter II yacht synthesises the finest in Dutch construction and design with impressive input from the owners and their representative Bora Kadikoy. The brief called for an 85-foot sailing yacht with an outstanding performance, flush decks, a plumb bow for a long waterline and the ability for the vessel to be sailed and maintained by a permanent crew of two. The yacht was to be classically styled above the water, with a lifting keel that stays below the interior floorboards in order to reduce draft for marinas. Carbon spars were chosen and the yacht was to be fast in light airs and in upwind conditions.

All this and more has been achieved by Hoek Design, which was responsible for the naval architecture, exterior styling, interior design and workshop drawings. The design was extensively optimised for performance and construction got underway at the Aluboot yard, which is specialised in aluminium sailing yachts and lifting keels.

Luxury yacht Windhunter II is the sixth yacht from the boards of Hoek Design to be built at Aluboot, which has also gained enormous experience in the need for uncompromising quality by building vessels for the Dutch lifeboat organisation KNRM.

Hoek Design has been exploring classically styled yachts with a plumb bow since the late 1990s. The first yacht in this style was the 36 ft Tintel, launched in 2001. This exceptionally fast yacht started a new tradition of which Windhunter is the latest fine example.

Luxury yacht Windhunter II - Exterior

Windhunter II yacht‘s hull is built in 5083 aluminium with longitudinal framing on transverse web frames in order to have a light and stiff hull construction. A recessed hydraulically operated side boarding ladder has been integrated in the construction and great emphasis given to reduce or eliminate corrosion where stainless steel parts join the aluminium construction for fairleads, deck drains and hatches. The yacht has an aluminium bowsprit and a high modulus carbon mast and V boom by Hall Spars with rod rigging.

Technically Windhunter II superyacht is equipped with robust systems, hydraulic winches, simple electric installations, air-conditioning and all other systems one will expect to find on a superyacht of this length. The lifting keel is a development between Aluboot and Hoek Design which has previously been seen on other Truly Classic designs. It keeps the lifting mechanism below the floorboards, freeing up extra space interior for Windhunter’s social spaces.

Superyacht Windhunter II - Galley

The interior design was arranged by the Hoek office with soft furnishings by Esra Gunray from Istanbul. A classic but contemporary look combines mahogany panelling with off-white painted areas, leather floors in mahogany margins and subtle upholstery. The owner’s stateroom is located aft across the full beam. It includes ‘his & hers’ bathrooms, with a bathtub in the latter being a relatively rare feature onboard a yacht this size.

The stateroom is accessible via a cabin that can either be used as a walk-in closet or a spare guest cabin. The main deckhouse is home to the dining table while the lower saloon features an integrated galley. There are two guest cabins with ensuite bathrooms forward of the saloon with a decent crew cabin for two further forward. The crew cabin with an ensuite bathroom has access during bad weather from inside the bathroom and from on deck in normal conditions. A small crew mess and galley complete the picture on a boat that is meticulously thought through in every respect.

Hoek designed SIMBA Yacht – latest sailing yacht to reach IY&A Awards shortlist

February 27, 2013

The latest sailing yacht nominated for the eagerly awaited International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2013 is the 108-foot Simba yacht. With naval architecture as well as styling by award-winning Hoek Design, superyacht Simba is a magnificent classic sloop, built by the prestigious Turkish shipyard, Proteksan Turquoise. Simba will compete for the ‘Sailing Yacht 25-40 metres’ Award.

The classic sheer, bow and stern overhang are proportionate to Simba yacht’s size. A moderate freeboard, classically styled deckhouses, cockpit and skylights together create a timeless atmosphere both outside and inside. The Simba superyacht is designed with a high righting moment as a performance oriented sloop and will participate in Spirit of Tradition Races. Therefore, her performance was extensively optimized using performance design tools.

The interior layout of Hoek designed sailing yacht Simba shows a full beam aft owners cabin, three guest cabins, a lower saloon, social main deckhouse as well as an aft deckhouse which is the primary navigation station. The crew accommodation is completely separated with double crew cabins, crew mess, galley and a separate crew deck exit. The interior styling was also completed by Hoek Design and showcases raised and fielded paneling combined with leather paneling above the wainscot level.

Luxury yacht Simba is designed with privacy in mind so guests and crew are separated where needed and necessary. The aft cockpit is the sailing center of the yacht where all winches, navigation and helm station are located. The center cockpit is the social hub of the yacht and incorporates a large outside dining table sheltered by a fixed bimini. There is ample storage on deck for tenders and other equipment.

Superyacht Simba can carry full main and Genoa up to 17-18 knots of True wind. The light air performance is also good due to low wetted surface area. With her poured lead keel, spade rudder, high aspect ratio sail plan and large sail area to displacement ratio she will be a promising yacht on the race course.

This Friday, 1st March, is the final deadline for applications to the IY&A Awards 2013. It is advised to mail awards@design-et-al.co.uk to reserve space on the shortlist.
