Preparations for the 2012 Gold Coast International Marine Expo well underway

May 16, 2012

Taking place on November 2, 3 and 4, the preparations for the second 2012 Gold Coast International Marine Expo are in a full swing, as exhibitors start to demonstrate strong interest in this popular event.

The Gold Coast Marine Expo will feature hundreds of exhibits displayed over a 2 5 kilometre display circuit

The Expo is a partnership between Gold Coast City Marina, Riviera and Telwater, who help stage this annual not-for-profit community and family focused event, which will once again take visitors behind the scenes of the marine industry with hundreds of exhibits from the world’s best boating brands displayed over a 2.5 kilometre display circuit.

The brainchild of Queensland’s boating industry leaders, the Gold Coast International Marine Expo is expected to be bigger and better than the inaugural event, which last year brought almost 16,000 people through the gates over the three day event.

Gold Coast International Marine Expo spokesman Stephen Milne said the word ‘international’ had been added to the title this year to reflect the international brands that would be exhibited at the Expo.

“It will also demonstrate that it is not just a regional show but also an international show attracting exhibitors and visitors from around Australia and the world,” Mr Milne said.

“Based on feedback from last year, the show layout has been re-designed to optimise the full 36 hectares of waterfront property of Riviera and Gold Coast City Marina, and to accommodate a greater number of exhibitors based on the overwhelmingly strong level of enquiries we have received so far.

“The Expo will continue to be free entry to the public, however we do ask for a $2 donation which will go directly to the Rotary Club of Coomera River, Sailability, Paradise Kids, and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.  Our philosophy of showcasing the joys of the boating life to a wide cross-section of the general public for an admission free Expo will continue.

The inaugural Gold Coast Marine Expo was a huge success with many exhibitors confirming their attendance at this year's event

“In its first year, the Gold Coast International Marine Expo attracted 15, 796 visitors and we believe that this, our second year, could be the third largest boat show in Australia based on attendance level, which is an enormous achievement for such a young and innovative event.

“We believe it is the community spirit of Queensland’s boating industry leaders that has made this event so successful with all profits going directly back to the community.”

Mr Milne said this year’s event will still include the Artists’ Quarter, a further fundraiser for local charities, live boat building demonstrations, factory tours, Kids Club, many new attractions and interactive displays for 2012, international food and beverage stalls, live entertainment and more.

“Even though the Expo is still eight months away, we are beginning to receive strong exhibitor interest and I encourage exhibitors to secure their bookings early to ensure they receive their desired display location and size.

“Given the early demand for increased display sizes from last year’s exhibitors, we have extended considerably our volume of display space.  This is one of the great attributes of our facilities here at Coomera, we can literally double or triple our displays if required.

“We will offer our 2011 founding exhibitors the first right of refusal of their same position and display space as a mark of thanks for their belief and support in our ‘dream’ last year.”

Gold Coast Marine Expo – a true not-for-profit community event

December 22, 2011

$2000 for each of the two Gold Coast charities, Paradise Kids and Sailability, have been raised from the inaugural Gold Coast Marine Expo’s Artists Quarter.

Gold Coast Marine Expo spokesman Stephen Milne said the Expo set out to be a true not-for-profit community event and it was pleasing to see so many people supporting the fundraising initiative.

“The Artists Quarter had a wide variety of artists from all different backgrounds and mediums come together to create a marine themed artwork,” Mr Milne said.

“The artwork was then exhibited for sale with a selection of the works auctioned at the Carnivale of Colour evening on the Saturday night where 50 per cent of the proceeds were donated to Paradise Kids and Sailability.”

“The inaugural Gold Coast Marine Expo put a breath of fresh air into the Australian marine industry and with 15, 769 people through the gates it proves we had the right mix of free admission and parking, easily accessible location, great exhibitions and fun for the whole family as well as supporting our local charities.”

Paradise Kids community development manager Brodie Sheiles said the funds raised from the Gold Coast Marine Expo would go directly to supporting their counseling services.

“Paradise Kids has been operating since 1996, we receive no government funding and rely solely on fundraising events, beneficiary events and donations to keep our charity alive,” she said.

“We provide counseling services to young children and their families who are experiencing a traumatic time that could be the death or illness of a loved one or separation.”

“We were extremely happy to be part of the Gold Coast Marine Expo and appreciate their generosity.”

Sailability Gold Coast president Peter Board said they were ‘tickled pink’ to be involved in the inaugural Gold Coast Marine Expo.

“Sailability is a volunteer organisation, it’s not-for-profit and we have hundreds of volunteers who turn up every week to take disabled people sailing in dinghies and yachts,” he said.

“We have between 80 and 100 people every week who turn up by bus.  There are a lot of sailors who are paraplegic or quadriplegic so we use special slings to lift them out of their wheel chairs and into a sail boat where they are accompanied by an able-bodied trained skipper.”

“The funds raised by the Gold Coast Marine Expo will be used for repair and maintenance of our boats and to help buy fuel for our rescue boat.”

“We really appreciate the generosity of the local community.  It means so much to our sailors to spend an hour out on the Broadwater each week.  It puts a bit of sparkle into their day, puts a smile on their face and the tranquility of being out there on the water and out of their chair for an hour means so much to them and we thank the Gold Coast Marine Expo for their support.”

Mr Milne said organisers of the Gold Coast Marine Expo were already planning next year’s event, which will be held on November 2, 3 and 4. “We expect it to be bigger and better and look forward to continuing to grow this community event.”

Six Horizon motor yachts at Gold Coast Marine Expo

November 10, 2011

Horizon Motor Yachts Australia was present at the inaugural Gold Coast Marine Expo with 6 motor yachts including T52, V68, E70, E73, E78 and motor yacht E88, and got a lot of positive reactions. The Gold Coast Marine Expo 2011 was held on November 4-6, at Gold Coast Marine Precinct.

“Generally we were pleased with the level of enquiry especially on Saturday. It does indicate that there is room for a second Qld. show especially with the timing 6 months apart from the Sanctuary Cove show. We came out of the Expo with several good leads on our Horizon V68 and E73. We also had existing clients that are in the market, come to the show and move a step closer to purchasing.” said Russell Wright, director of HMYA.

This exhibit was very successful and Russell Wright of HMYA is busy to prepare the detail information and arrange sea trials for the potential customers. We believe Horizon family will have new members very soon.

“We knew the Expo would be a popular concept for boating families but we didn’t anticipate such a record crowd for year one, 15,769 people through the gates counted independently by Rotary Club members,” Mr Milne said.

“The Gold Coast Marine Expo truly has put a much-needed breath of fresh air into the Australian marine industry at a time when both the general public and the industry were ready for a change.”

Stephen said Boating was all about having fun, relaxing, socialising, meeting new friends, swapping ideas and knowledge.

Artist Kadee Webber encourages artists to push their brushes to the limits to help local charities

September 30, 2011

Inspirational young artist Kadee Webber is just a brush stroke away from facing one of her biggest challenges – to transform a blank canvas into a work of art in just 24 hours when she joins fellow artists in front of a live audience at the inaugural Gold Coast Marine Expo in November.

Kadee Webber puts the finishing tounches on a recent commission

Kadee Webber puts the finishing tounches on a recent commission

The up and coming practicing artist will graduate from her Bachelor of fine Arts degree in November but despite her youth, Kadee already has several exhibitions under her paint palette and a string of work on display in art galleries on the Gold Coast, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Kadee discovered her creative talent in 1997 when she was seven-years-old and started attending art classes, by the time she reached grades 11 and 12 she had begun to experiment with new mediums and was short listed for the 2006 Ministers Award for Education in Art.  Kadee also earned one of the highest academic grades for art in Queensland, Australia.

As a practicing artist working for the Anthea Polson Art Gallery in Main Beach, Kadee was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to participate in the fundraising Artists Quarter event to be held at the Gold Coast Marine Expo.

Kadee Webber will be joined by other local Gold Coast artists at the Gold Coast Marine Expo Nov 4, 5 and 6

Kadee Webber will be joined by other local Gold Coast artists at the Gold Coast Marine Expo Nov 4, 5 and 6

The Artists Quarter aims to have a wide variety of artists from all different backgrounds and mediums come together to create a marine themed artwork.

Artists will set up their easel or sculpture workspace in a designated area within the Gold Coast Marine Expo where they will have views of the water, boats and the Expo itself.  All artists will have from 9am until 5pm on Friday and Saturday to complete their marine themed masterpiece before they are exhibited and offered for sale at the Carnivale of Colour, which will be held on the Saturday night.  A selection of works will be auctioned with 50 per cent of the proceeds going to artists while the remaining 50 per cent will be divided equally between two local charities, Paradise Kids and Sailabiltiy.

“I think the Gold Coast Marine Expo Artists Quarter is a really interesting initiative because it gives local artists some exposure, confidence and experience as well as providing boat owners with a memento of what they have worked so hard to achieve,” Kadee said.

“It’s a great opportunity for new artists to experience painting in front of an audience and to a real deadline.  I think the time frame will be challenging and it will be interesting to see the different works.  I am excited about participating in this event as it also raises money for two very worthy local Gold Coast charities.”

Gold Coast Marine Expo spokesman Stephen Milne said the Artists Quarter was a unique experience for amateur and professional artists to showcase their talents to the wider community.

“On completion of the artworks, we will be displaying them all at our Carnivale of Colour VIP night which will be held on Saturday night where they will go under the hammer to raise funds for Paradise Kids and Sailability,” Stephen said.

“Boating enthusiasts will have the chance to purchase an original canvas or sculpture work from some of the Gold Coast’s up and coming artists and help raise money for very worthy causes.”

An example of Kadee Webber's mixed media artwork

An example of Kadee Webber's mixed media artwork

Kadee specialises in underwater scenes and she likes to use a mixed medium to create her masterpieces.

“It’s a new process in the arts world, I use underwater photographs and then I paint images over the top of them,” she said.

“I use mixed media because of the varying textures they create, for instance I use mostly oils for my backgrounds as they blend well and being a smooth liquid I can create a wide variety of backgrounds.  Acrylics dry quickly and the bright colours work really well with my underwater portraits and I like to use oil pastel because it gives a sketched or drawn effect.

“I have recently completed a painting of a Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht which I did using oil pastels.  Most paintings take me about one week to complete if I work consistently on them so I may have to look at a smaller project for the Artists Quarter challenge.”

Organisers of the inaugural Gold Coast Marine Expo are calling on all artists to participate in the Artists Quarter.

Gold Coast Marine Expo gains momentum

August 01, 2011

Since its launch last month, the Gold Coast Marine Expo has gained momentum with strong exhibitor interest from marine industry leaders.

Gold Coast Marine Expo spokesman Stephen Milne said it was pleasing to see such a high level of interest within weeks of the launch.

“There’s been a very strong level of interest towards this event from all aspects of the Australian boating industry including electronics, sailing yachts, prestige powerboats and trailer boats,” said Mr Milne.

“People are really embracing the Expo’s ideal of showcasing a totally different dimension of boating exhibition with practical demonstrations and the chance to see boats being built and serviced from runabouts through to luxury multi-million dollar craft.  The added bonus of free admission will help attract healthy crowds.”

Many leading marine industry brands have already confirmed they will be exhibiting at the show including Princess Yachts, Grand Banks, Raymarine, Flemming Motor Yachts, Geoff Lovett International, AMI Marine, Catalina Yachts, Cummins, Springwood Marine and Relax Enterprises.

There will be a range of practical demonstrations held across the three day event from reputable organisations such as International Yacht Paint and Australian Marine Enterprises, both based at Gold Coast City Marina.

General manager of International Yacht Paint Tony Keegan said people would gain a valuable insight into marine painting and the various paints, materials and processes involved in painting a new boat or refurbishing a 20 year old classic at their 160m2 working display.

“We will have three boats on display that have been partially completed with different paint systems such as primer coats, undercoats and top coats,” Tony said.

“We will also have educational DVDs and handouts to demonstrate the painting process and show people how easy it is to apply these products both single and two-pack products.

“The Gold Coast Marine Expo will give people the opportunity to gain professional advice directly from industry experts before embarking on a project.  We are there to guide people in the right direction.”

Founder of Australian Marine Enterprises Joe Akacich said they would demonstrate the various stages of refit and repair in their 400m2 factory.

“This expo is an outstanding opportunity for people to come to Gold Coast Marine Precinct and see work as it’s being undertaken on in a safe environment, allowing people to see the different levels of contemporary and traditional boat building process and skills,” Joe said.

“We will be showcasing traditional timber boat work in the factory, some cabinetry work, stainless steel fabrication and polishing.

“We can provide refitting of any craft from six metres to 100 metres.  Our most recent project was the restoration of a 23 metre sail racing vessel which was called Bobsled and now it’s called Whitebirds.

“This project was a full refit, rewire, re-engineer, redesign and replace the old interior with a new interior.  This was a 20 year old aluminium racing boat and we have completely rebuilt it with everything from the keel to a brand new mast and everything in between.”

It is this type of project that boating enthusiasts will be able to see being undertaken and speak to the craftsmen face-to-face.

The Gold Coast Marine Expo will be held from November 4-6 across 36 hectares at the Gold Coast Marine Precinct.
