52nd Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show´s results

November 14, 2011

At the 52nd annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS), three million square feet of exhibits in-water and on land were available for optimistic exhibitors and motivated buyers. Despite the weather was not that good over the weekend, the show was reported to be the best exhibition in 5 years.

“Overall we are very pleased with how this year’s show turned out,” said Efrem Zimbalist III, CEO of Show Management, the company that produces the show. “There was a strong presence of serious buyers and our exhibitors were ready with great new product and realistic pricing.”

As retail sales begin an upturn, experienced yachtsmen and those looking to enter the market with the purchase of their first yacht cautiously resurfaced as eager and more educated consumers.

“Crowds lined the aisles of the Superyacht Builders and Designers Tent,” said Catalina Bujor, PR/marketing officer with Dockwise Yacht Transport. “We had consistent traffic coming in for quotes and inquiries and we came away from the show with several bookings and valuable leads from all over the world.”

Said Andrew Cohen with YACHTSIGN®, “We met with owners, captains, builders, marina operators and world-class designers who insist upon buying the highest-quality products, one of the many reasons they come to FLIBS.”

This year’s show focused on engaging attendees as well as exhibitors with easy-to-navigate show sites at this best-of boating lifestyle event. Enhancements to the show including the new smartphone app named MyBoatShow, Trawler Port, the SYBAss Pavilion and Captain’s Den all contributed to a well-executed and heavily attended event.

Sean Blue, AVP and director of yachts with Chartis, a global property and casualty insurance provider whose display was among the superyacht builders in the new SYBAss Pavilion, concurred with the positive feedback, adding, “Despite the weather at the show, traffic was good and chatter on the docks was definitely up in terms of buyers in the crowd. This seemed to be across various segments in the industry and yachts of all values. What also seemed to be occurring was a greater collaboration between various businesses to add value to each other’s services and to sell the yachting lifestyle and build a stronger industry.”

Attendees took to the docks at the Bahia Mar, Hall of Fame, Hilton, Sails and Las Olas Marinas rain or shine with many sales reported and offers made.

“I can’t recall a moment during the Show that the Beneteau G.T. booth wasn’t buzzing with buyers examining the new Beneteau Power line-up,” said Bob Denison, co-owner of Dension Yacht Sales, the exclusive Beneteau Power dealer in South Florida. “TrawlerPort benefitted from a steady stream of trawler buyers. The 52 Swift Trawler attracted trawler enthusiasts from all over the world.”

The Broward Convention Center, an extremely popular show location during the wetter moments of the show, also reported quality activity.

“We saw big crowds, especially for the rainy days that we had on the weekend,” said Jim Zimmerman, general manager of Jerry’s Marine Service. “We saw a lot of interest from customers wanting to repower their existing yachts. Owners who are not ready to spend for a new yacht just yet are going to re-power their existing yachts.”

Also heavily attended were the 45 free fishing, diving and boating safety seminars, some with standing room only.

Across six locations more than 1000 yachts were on display in the water and on land, in addition to every type of fishing product imaginable, marine electronics, safety equipment and boating accessories. Also on display were exotic cars, a submarine and a helicopter.

PSP transported some of the biggest names to FLIBS

November 03, 2011

Yacht transportation firm, PSP, has transported successfully some of Britain’s most well-known yachts to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in America. The PSP Southampton Boat Show sponsor transported more than 4,000 miles by sea yachts and equipment for Sunseeker, Sealine and Fairline, to be presented on time at the international event.

The nine yachts and items of exhibition equipment were loaded onto one of PSP’s vessels in Southampton and arrived in Port Everglades on October 26, when PSP’s Brian Woods oversaw the unloading.

He said: “It was quite a sight seeing the ship arrive fully loaded with all these amazing yachts – a real tribute to British design and manufacture. The PSP team here felt a very real pride!”

Paul Burgess, from Sunseeker Florida Ltd, said: “PSP always comes through for us, even under tight time frames and schedules. The PSP port team was efficient and professional and unloaded the show boats swiftly and safely. We were even given the chance to be involved in the discharge, giving us the opportunity to view our yachts before they were put in the water.”

As a result of PSP’s successful job it has been commissioned to transport three yachts to Miami for Sunseeker Florida Ltd. in January.

The N86 motor yacht was PAE’s first venture into the superyacht market. The yacht N86 was met with much success and was a catalyst in the design and forthcoming launch of the Nordhavn 120 motor yacht, which has solidified PAE as a leader in not only expedition yachts but as a superyacht builder as well.

Like all Nordhavn yachts, the M/Y N86 is meant to cross oceans, purpose-built with safety at sea in mind while providing the utmost level of fit and finish. The Nordhavn 86 yacht is constructed using the most exotic woods, stone and materials, hand-crafted to the highest standards by our factory’s skilled artisans. Each hull to date is a masterpiece of her owners’ unique vision, enhanced with the delightful bonus of being the best value in this range of super-yacht.

The Nordhavn 86 yacht will be on display at the 2011 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, October 27-31, at the Las Olas Marina, slip 123. This particular N86 was built for fun, optimized to carry “toys” with custom storage for SCUBA equipment, fishing gear and jetskis. She’s also got a “double VIP layout” with an aft-facing master suite on the bridge level complete with sliding doors which lead out to a private balcony. A second VIP stateroom is located on the main level.

Showcased alongside the N86 at Fort Lauderdale will be the Nordhavn 64 motor yacht, currently one of PAE’s bestselling models. Both boats will be at the Las Olas section of the show. Additionally, a Nordhavn 55 will be in Fort Lauderdale at the main section of the show on B Dock.

New 56m Future Feadship Qi Motor Yacht gives energy for life

September 22, 2011

The New Future Feadship Qi (pronounced chee), is the sixth Future Concept Feadship has unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show in as many years. Like its predecessors, Feadship Qi has been created by De Voogt Naval Architects to reflect the likely requirements and desires of the next generation of superyacht clients. Measuring 56 metres (183’9”) in length, Superyacht Qi is designed to generate a fresh sense of energy among owners and their family & friends as they reconnect with nature in the most inspiring surroundings.

New 56m Future Feadship Qi Motor Yacht gives energy for life

New 56m Future Feadship Qi Motor Yacht gives energy for life

The word Qi (pronounced chee) represents an Eastern idea of a circulating life force or energy flow that permeates creation. This notion neatly encapsulates the essence of the 2011 Future Concept Feadship, incorporating the lines of the Chinese character in its design and making the most of her surroundings both inside and out.

Inspired choices

The ancient way of writing ‘qi’ in Chinese consisted of three wavy lines, an image of one’s breath as seen on a chilly day. These curved lines are clearly visible in the shell above yacht Qi’s waterline and mirrored in the hull. Another inspiration both visually and conceptually was the snow owl, an elegant creature that spends most of its time soaring gently or in steady flight.

Snow owls are renowned for the way they protect offspring in their nest, and Feasship superyacht Qi also features protected areas for the whole family. At the same time the yacht can also be opened up to allow guests to bask in the environment and enjoy all forms of outdoor entertainment and watersports.

“Qi combines phenomenal views of the changing environment outside while enhancing a safe and secure feeling within,” says Ronno Schouten, who led the team of designers and naval architects during the ten-month project. “We set out to prove that a wish for privacy need not conflict with open panoramas and an easy connection to the water. The yacht’s luxury areas are centred around the energy tower, which rises through all decks and connects people literally and metaphorically with the outside world. The glass exterior bathes the interior with light at this virtual centre point, offering fabulous views and a genuine sense of outdoor-in living. The fore and aft ship open areas provide a seamless transition from private to public, from interior intimacy to outdoor pleasures.”

Fabulous facilities

Qi offers all the facilities imaginable for maximum onboard comfort. The four guest cabins are located on the lower deck, each with sliding doors to their own private terrace. Amidships the hull doors open up to reveal a gigantic spa and a portside gym. The main deck lounge offers stunning vistas and be easily transformed into a party area, seating and relaxation zone or a gigantic cinema with a 180-degree screen. Cosiness is assured on the sun deck, where a ‘camp fire’ can be enjoyed at night in the centre of the Jacuzzi.

Shaped for performance

A blend of past experience and future thinking is also seen with yacht Qi’s propulsion set-up. In 2010 De Voogt came up with the revolutionary Breathe Superyacht concept, which reduces fuel consumption by 20 to 40 percent at cruising speed. The subject of enormous interest, this system has been developed in more detail with Feadship‘s suppliers and is now ready to be incorporated in a new design.

To achieve such fuel consumption the hull has a wedge-like shape with the centre of buoyancy far aft, while the wave damping aft body creates negligible stern waves. As there is only one shaft line, appendage resistance is significantly reduced. The system has only one main propeller, making the most of the very latest innovations. Reliability is ensured by fitting a large contra rotating and azimuthing sternthruster just aft of the main propeller. This can provide Qi with a speed of up to 12 knots, sufficient for getting home should something happen to the main engine.

Smart redundancy

While a conventional twin screw yacht will lose all its propulsion capacity in case of fire or damage in the engine room, Qi’s propulsion concept sees the main engine and generators placed in separate rooms to guarantee the highest level of redundancy.

Three different propulsion modes can be distinguished. In dynamic positioning or diesel electric mode only the generators will be running, providing clean and quiet operation up to 12 knots. In range mode only the medium-speed diesel will be operating, consuming 10 percent less fuel than its high speed equivalent. Electrical power for hotel load and the thruster are provided via a shaft generator, further reducing fuel consumption and generator running hours. Finally, at full speed both the main engine and generators are deployed to offer maximum power.

For another opportunity to see Qi on display this year, visit our exhibition stand at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (October 27 – 31, 2011).

Add in the other two launches by Feadship this year – the 63-metre superyacht Lady Britt and the new F45 Helix yacht – and no other yard has delivered such a combined length of superyachts in 2011. This record-breaking performance means that the Feadship directors and managers will be attending the Monaco and Fort Lauderdale boat shows in great spirits.

“The current trend at Feadship illustrates that our clients are very confident in ordering large yachts with us”, says Feadship’s marketing manager Francis Vermeer. “In addition to the 101-metre build, there are several ‘XL’ Feadships contracted, ranging in length from 78 to 99 metres. The Feadship order book remains very strong as we continue to set the benchmark of premium quality.”

Lady Britt superyacht will also be present in Monaco, available for viewing on an exclusive appointment-only basis. “The wide diversity of projects over the last year proves once again the broad interest in the Feadship portfolio,” adds Vermeer. “From medium custom-series yachts to giant fully custom Feadships, our range caters for all preferences.”

The Monaco Yacht Show will also feature the unveiling of the sixth Future Concept Feadship Qi, plus highly impressive models of Air and Tango.

Superyacht MAZU launched by MCC

October 29, 2010

Across the world from the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in China, Maritime Concept and Construction’s (MCC) new 46-meter motor yacht MAZU was just launched. Superyacht Mazu (ex Marco polo II) is the second yacht in the Marco Polo series, built at the Cheoy Lee Shipyard in China. Literally speaking, in Chinese, the word Mazu (also spelled Matsu) means ‘mother ancestor’.

The Marco Polo series of megayachts are appropriately named as they are luxury explorer or expedition style motor yachts which are designed and built to travel the world, not to merely sit at the dock. Motor yacht MAZU’s hull color is a magnificent Burgundy red, in contrast to Marco Polo’s distinctive green hull.

The megayacht MAZU has a 9.20m beam, draws 2.9m, has a cruising range of 7000nm @11knots and 3300 nm at 13 knots. Like her sister ship Marco Polo she has 1 x CAT 3512B, 1911HP @ 1600RPM.

Project manager, Albrecht Buchner, and naval architect, Kasia Milewska will be aboard Marco Polo at the Cheoy Lee display of yachts at Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show showing the latest photographs of M/Y MAZU in the water.
