35m Blue Water Explorer concept by Stolk Marimecs

August 06, 2012

The Dutch studio Stolk Marimecs has finished the design for the new 35m Blue Water Explorer. Thanks to her size as well as clever accommodation layout, the Bluewater explorer yacht is a comfortable and notably practical long range cruiser, with diesel-electric propulsion and ice reinforcement.

The beautiful Bluewater expedition yacht is optimized for remote exploration, according to Marimecs’ practical and experience-based explorer yacht approach:

Comfortable & Practical
The Blue water explorer superyacht is a robust vessel, with a generous amount of interior space, not only in terms of accommodation but also with regard to living space. She offers comfortable and safe seagoing behaviour and features simple but thoroughly thought-through systems and equipment, which increase safety and reduce running cost.

Onboard systems and equipment will exclude excess and over-the-top luxury systems which do not add value to the owners needs – this to ensure an attractive cost price. It will be relatively simple to construct, further resulting in an economical purchase price.

Lovely Looks
In addition to all this, an important factor in the design was to integrate a distinctive style and look, whilst simultaneously matching the robust feel the owner usually has in mind for an explorer yacht. The team ensured well-balanced exterior lines, as head-designer Mr Stolk comments: “Explorer yacht design has always been one of our favourite fields of work, and this 35m design is based on those decades of practical, as well as artistic experience.”

In short: “A lot of yacht for a reasonable price.”

Living the Life
Historically, there roughly has always been a distinction between sailing yacht owners and motoryacht owners. Sailors would be classified as, in general, being very involved with their yacht, making long journeys and being motivated to preserve the traditions of the sailing way of life; a way of thinking in which the journey itself is a goal.

Willem Stolk points out: “Explorer yacht owners are today’s yachting adventurers. They are experienced yacht owners who, to a great extend, know what they will use the yacht for, and what they will not use it for.” The yacht’s interior and exterior spaces are carefully designed to match a typical explorer’s wishes, with room for personalisation.

The aft main deck of the 35m luxury yacht Bluewater accommodates toys and tenders, eliminating the need for a costly tender garage and complicated launching equipment. The starboard side of the yacht accommodates a lobby, which provides entrance to the main deck’s salon. Thanks to the yacht’s wide body, the full-beam salon with dining area is spacious, befitting a luxury yacht.

The forward part of the main deck offers a separate owner’s area, which offers the ‘complete private retreat’ most luxurious cruising yachts do. The fore ship of the lower deck houses an extremely spacious crew area for four, whilst the stern offers an extra crew cabin on starboard, and much extra storage (for instance for diving equipment) on port. The lower deck houses a full-beam VIP cabin and two more guest cabins.

Retreats with a View
The bridge deck offers a large bridge with comfortable lounge corner, which due to explorer characteristics, is very much a part of the yacht’s living space. The salon aft of the bridge is another comfortable place to reside, with impressive views outside and easy direct access to the bridge or spacious aft deck.

The sundeck of the Bluewater yacht by Stolk Marimecs is dedicated to alfresco-living and sunbathing. It includes a spa pool surrounded by generous sunpads, a bar and more comfortable lounging options. Naturally, alternative arrangements and options such as a folding balcony are available as per owner’s request.

The new Motion Code: Blue SERION EXPLORER E60 motor yacht

February 22, 2012

The Austrian design studio motion code: blue has released its latest design concept, the SERION EXPLORER E60 yacht which is a reinterpretation of long range passage maker yachts for the next generation of yacht owners.

SERION EXPLORER E60 motor yacht by Motion Code Blue

SERION EXPLORER E60 motor yacht by Motion Code Blue

With the SERION E60 yacht project, the design studio shows its competence in research and development (R&D) and wants to set a clear statement for future yacht design.

The SERION EXPLORER E60 yacht concept is based on a research of trends in yacht design and upcoming value shifts within the next 15 to 20 years.

SERION EXPLORER E60 yacht concept by Motion Code Blue

The aim of SERION E60 yacht is to broaden the developing picture of future motor yachts within 60ft by elaborating changing megatrends, markets, and consumer behaviours but also focusing on unconventional functions and features within this class. This concept highlights areas of possible improvement and redefines the overall character of classic passage makers.

The SERION EXPLORER E60 yacht concept focuses on the ability of long range journeys, autarkic traveling and maximum living spaces at all climate or weather conditions and would make an excellent charter yacht.

Reasonable changes within future lifestyles prove that influences of extreme urbanization will cause an increasing demand for deceleration. It is highly expectable that the aspect of wellbeing and experiencing as well as independent and autarkic traveling will come to the fore, and the picture of fast looking dynamic yacht designs will slowly start to fade away.

Motion Code Blue SERION E60 motor yacht concept

Motion Code: Blue SERION E60 motor yacht concept

Motion Code: Blue SERION E60 motor yacht concept

The growing trend for passage makers is clearly visible in the super yacht segment, where not only the idea of long range journeys, but also the unmistakable look and feel of a moving luxury environment on any ocean of the planet makes up for the main purchasing reasons.

Comparing the growing interest for long range vessels in smaller classes and the current variety of the 60 ft-market, there is a clear gap regarding future consumers’ expectations in terms of design and product identification.

Exterior design concept:

To make up for the missing luxury appeal in many passage makers within 60ft, high emphasis was put on aesthetic and emotional, yet practicable treatment of lines, forms, and proportions across the entire hull-and superstructure-design.

The visual, functional and emotional fusion of motor yacht and sailing yacht-characteristics communicate the spirit of joyful long distance traveling as ecologically friendly as possible.

Merging an emotional luxury approach with the idea of a rough ocean-going explorer vessel, SERION E60 rather fits to the aesthetics of luxury yachts, than to conventional trawlers and passage makers of its class.

Due to this, the main deck is stretched to the bow, where it connects to the main superstructure.

Besides its new and unconventional overall appearance, the yacht offers several exterior features such as 2 balconies, one on each side of the greenhouse and a tilting bathing platform to create a huge beach club.

The wide flybridge of the SERION EXPLORER E60 yacht concept stretches itself above the whole main deck and the wheelhouse provides shade and safety.

Interior design concept:

With an unconventional division of spaces and a layout concept that is based on reduction and special utility areas, each deck on board the SERION E60 offers super yacht- inspired advantages in terms of a spacious and light flooded atmosphere.

Depending on its temporary habitation and involved climate conditions, large units of the insulation glass can be converted. Retractable panoramic windows transform the main deck to an open loft whenever desired and sliding windows within the sky-cabin, which is located behind the wheelhouse on the fly bridge, enable open air night’s right underneath the stars.

The functional design approach of the main deck enables the experience of fusing interior and exterior spaces, creating a generous feel at any spot on board. A boundless view across the entire length of the main deck subconsciously suggests a living space far bigger than 60 feet.

As the rear sliding door opens up completely, the external bar and internal kitchen unit seem to entirely merge together.

SERION EXPLORER E60 yacht by Motion Code Blue

In a nutshell:

Taking typical trawlers and passage makers to another level of sophistication, the SERION EXPLORER E60 yacht concept expands the horizon of imagination towards future 60ft displacement yachts.

Luxury Explorer yacht Big Fish by Aquos Yachts wins 2 more prestigious yachting awards

November 03, 2011

The 45.00m (147′ 7″) luxury explorer yacht BIG FISH has taken home two more top design honors during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show 2011, moving her into the rare field of history-making yachts. Superyacht Big Fish now has a trophy case with five coveted yacht awards, an unprecedented achievement as the first launch from her builder, Aquos Yachts.

The first new honor bestowed on the charter yacht Big Fish was a Neptune Award for Best Naval Architecture of all 2010-launched motor yachts. The award was presented Tuesday evening, Oct. 25th at the ShowBoats International Design Awards ceremony, held at the glamorous Mar A Lago resort in Palm Beach. The ShowBoats Design Awards is the longest-running awards program in the luxury yacht industry. These awards are judged by a select panel of industry experts and yacht owners based on a list of nominees presented to the judges by the editors of ShowBoats International.

The second award given to the Big Fish yacht was top honors for the Best Full Displacement motor yacht in the 40 to 60 meter size range, at the SuperYacht Awards. Presented at the annual International Superyacht Society gala Oct. 28th at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort, the SuperYacht Awards are selected by a panel of industry experts, and then are voted on by the entire membership of the Society.

In both prizes, the charter yacht Big Fish beat out a large number of other worthy contenders launched last year at many of the industry’s premier yacht builders.

In addition to the ShowBoats International and the International Superyacht Society awards, Big Fish has been honored by Boat International with a Judge’s Commendation at their World Superyacht Awards, and by both Yachts International France and by Asia Pacific Yachting magazines as The Most Innovative Yacht launched in the past year.

“We are thrilled by the reception and recognition of Big Fish by the yachting industry,” said Richard Beattie, owner of Big Fish, and chairman of Aquos Yachts, which commissioned the yacht’s construction at McMullen & Wing Shipyard in Auckland, New Zealand. “These honors, voted on by the leading lights of the super yacht industry, underscore the success of the Aquos Yachts vision, to produce rugged, seaworthy yachts that also offer the very highest standards of contemporary design and technological innovation, while at the same time providing the extraordinary comfort, service, safety and security that today’s yacht owners demand from their boats.”

Beattie added, “These awards truly reflect the efforts and talents of the entire Aquos Yachts team. It’s one thing to say you’re going to design and build a world-class luxury expedition yacht, and it’s another thing entirely to deliver on that claim. These awards prove not only that we captured the imagination of the industry with the vision behind Big Fish, but we delivered on that vision by successfully completing the longest, most difficult shakedown cruise in the history of luxury yachting.”

Only 15 months after her launch, motor yacht Big Fish is now on her second trans-Atlantic crossing and nearing 45,000nm on her own bottom. On her maiden voyage she crossed the Pacific Ocean, transited the Panama Canal twice, chartered in Antarctica, and cruised extensively in Tahiti, the Galapagos, the Amazon, northern Sweden and Norway, and the Caribbean. In the process she has booked more than $2.5M in charter income in addition to entertaining Beattie and his guests for another 7 weeks.

Jim Gilbert, Aquos Yachts’ marketing consultant and former editor-in-chief of ShowBoats International, said Big Fish has played a key role in the current economic revival of the yachting industry. “We first began promoting Big Fish and Aquos Yachts at the very bottom of the recession,” Gilbert said. “The fact that Richard Beattie was willing to invest in developing an important emerging market niche – yachts aimed at a younger, less traditional, and tech-savvy generation of owners – helped stimulate the market and spur interest in new ways to enjoy the ocean.

“As a lifelong student of yachting, I have never witnessed a more ambitious and successful inaugural cruise than that of Big Fish. She was a household name before she launched, and now with her extraordinary media coverage and design honors she has become one of the true legends of yachting.”

Yacht Big Fish is in the Canary Islands on her way to the Antigua Charter Show. She has already booked several weeks of charter for the Caribbean holiday season. In the New Year she will return via the Panama Canal to the South Pacific, where she will spend the winter charter season.

By the time motor Yacht BIG FISH reaches the Canal (for her third transit!) she will have completed more than 45,000nm of cruising on her own bottom, having touched six continents in the process!

Meanwhile, construction on Aquos Hull #2, yacht StarFish, continues to proceed on schedule for a service launch in one year’s time, and delivery in early 2013. Please be on the lookout early next week for a full set of renderings and animation sequence of StarFish.

52m Expedition Yacht SuRi to undergo refit and extension to 63m

October 12, 2011

The 52.43m (172′) expedition motor yacht SuRi is to undergo a full rebuild and extension of 10.9m (36 foot) at Bay Ship and Yacht Co. Located in Alameda, California, Bay Ship and Yacht Co. (BSY) in collaboration with naval architects Kirilloff and Associates of Green Cove springs, Florida, and Jeffrey Botwin of Herringbone Design of Los Angeles, California were awarded the contract to lengthen the shadow support superyacht SuRi by adding a 36 foot mid-body hull and superstructure plug for a new overall length of 63.4m (208 feet)

The Sun Deck of yacht SuRi will be extended aft 24 feet to allow for the owner’s new alfresco dining area plus a complete main engine and generator renewal package. In the hull of the extension area, a new underwater viewing room will be added that will allow guests to view the ocean from the comfort of M/Y SuRi’s elegant interior.

BSY won the contract for this work by competing internationally against New Zealand and Australian shipyards.  Since the 2008 financial crash, American super yacht refit yards have suffered severely, with far fewer projects planned, and those that did materialize mostly going to Europe.

BSY’s competitive spirit and its ability to perform this type of work with its skilled tradesmen and local vendor support helped win this contract.  The motor yacht SuRi refit will be accomplished using 99% American made products and Subcontractors, thus generating many jobs in the local economy, and is noted to be the largest yacht refit and modification project done in the United States in many years.  All work will be overseen by the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and San Francisco, California offices of Bureau Veritas, the yacht’s classification society.

The SuRi yacht is an American built hull that was converted in Seattle in 2007/2008 and is owned by an American (California) yachtsman.

Guest enhancements due to the lengthening of the yacht

General Enhancements of superyacht SuRi

Obviously, a larger, longer, and heavier boat will offer enhancements to the guest experience other than the accommodations. With new engines offering more horsepower, quieter running, less environmental impact, the guest experience is also enhanced. The explorer yacht SuRi’s speed will increase because of the added horsepower and will be more fuel efficient. The new generators will also be quieter, have less environment impact and be more fuel efficient. Because there is an increased amount of mass of the yacht in terms of ballast, the ride comfort will also be increased.

Guest Accommodation Enhancements

Sun Deck: The longer and expanded sun deck of shadow support vessel SuRi will offer more square footage, a larger sunning and “in shade” areas and will continue to have the high level of finish currently present on SuRi.

Bridge and Helo Deck: This deck has received the full length of the mid body of 36 feet. All of the added length happen aft of the existing lounge and a spacious fully glass enclosed guest lounge has been added to the already comfortable and elegant main lounge. The new guest lounge on M/Y SuRi can either be closed off in glass, fully climate controlled and become a part of the existing expansive lounge or, by closing the existing lounge aft doors, all of the glass panels can be opened to allow for the breeze to cool guests as they enjoy the luxury of the new lounge amenities.

Mezzanine Guest Cabins: Two additional, full beam guest cabins will be installed on the mezzanine level outfitted in a similar style to the existing cabins which are also being expanded and reconfigured. These four guest cabins allow an unobstructed, private view from the yacht.

Main Deck: The main deck of superyacht SuRi also received the full added length of 36 feet in the hangar allowing for the carriage of even more “toys” and tenders than she currently carries.

Hold Deck: In way of where the 36 foot mid body there are two large rooms that offer guest a fully equipped area on the starboard side for exercise, yoga and for additional lounging and meeting area. This space can also be used as a children’s play area.  On the port side of the new hold guest area is a spacious, relaxing and comfortable media room equipped with the latest television and sound system. Also in this space are the “windows to the sea”. There are two large viewing windows on the SuRi yacht that open to the ocean bottom, lit by high intensity lights that will illuminate the ocean and attract sea life to the guests.

The renowned designer Eva Cadio & Co who provided Arctic Whales exterior and interior design is known for  her work on superyachts such as the 68m motor yacht Cedar Sea, 33m yacht Emmerson, 37m explorer yacht Jasmin, 39m yacht MuMu and the 37m M/Y Calaf.

Eva explains the main concept of the Artic Whale superyacht: “The main concept for Arctic Whale has been to offer the ultimate yacht for world travel with a unique “Art de Vivre” – a form that fits function and lifestyle and an exterior design that brings it all together. The lines of Arctic Whale are designed to show strength, harmony and elegance.”

“It is a ground breaking project,” says the project’s YPI broker, Mike Rich. “To have one of the top shipbuilders in Asia working with one of Europe’s best designers is an important plus and one of the reasons we at YPI were keen to act as the exclusive worldwide representatives.”

“With Arctic Whale you get all the great flair and intelligence of French design, the competence and quality of a tried and tested shipyard, European prepared build specifications and all at the exceptionally competitive pricing that only China can now offer. Whether you want to amble around St Tropez, show off in St Barths or go crashing through the ice in Antarctica, Arctic Whale is the first of a new era of yacht building and we at YPI are very proud to be there from the start.”

Roger Liang, the founding owner and Managing Director of Kingship states: “This is one of the biggest projects Kingship has taken on. We are very confident that working with the talent of Eva and the experience of YPI, and with top quality European project management, Arctic Whale will set the standard and raise the bar for some of our other projects still to come.”
