Feature: 2011 Motor Yacht Turquoise – a Proteksan Turquoise Superyacht designed by Dubois

September 27, 2011

The 55.4m Turquoise motor yacht is one of the most spectacular launches of 2011. The Proteksan-built superyacht Turquoise was designed by Dubois Naval Architects and made her public debut earlier this summer at the Dubois Cup, in the glamorous surroundings of Sardinia’s Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

The Turquoise yacht features exterior styling by Dubois Naval Architects which was the experienced repeat clients’ second Dubois-designed superyacht from the same shipyard.

The 55.4-metre megayacht Turquoise is built in steel and aluminium under the hull name NB52 and offers the ultimate in cruising comfort for up to 12 guests. Her exterior combines a purposeful sheer and business-like vertical windscreen with a long, elegant, seagoing bow. The yacht is built for cruising, able to attain a maximum giving speed of 17 knots, and a 3,500-mile range at 14 knots, thanks to her two 1,500hp engines.

The M/Y Turquoise has a cool and classically modern interior by HOK Design, boasting a spectacular full-beam owner’s suite on the main deck, along with an equally opulent VIP suite. Four ensuite guest cabins are arranged around a central staircase and lobby.

Simple forms and straight edges, quality high-gloss joinery and an intelligent use of bright white space are calculated to display the owner’s art collection to spectacular effect. Turquoise’s spacious saloon and formal dining table that can seat 12 guests on the main deck are served by a professionally appointed galley and pantry on the port side. Upstairs, a relaxing private upper saloon comes complete with its own pantry, a baby grand piano and leads out onto a secluded, alfresco dining area.

There are also six crew cabins together with a spacious mess and laundry. The captain’s double cabin is on the upper deck, adjoining the wheelhouse.

Turquoise is built to meet Lloyd’s X100A1 and MCA LY2 standards, and looks set to satisfy her American owner’s cruising ambitions for many years to come.

The purposeful-looking sleek 45m motor yacht by Dubois boasts a fold-down bulwark balcony on the port side for the main-deck VIP cabin, in addition to the four or five guest cabins down below (depending on the client’s final layout choice) as well as a large, side-loading tender garage.

The fully enclosed upper deck of the 45m Dubois 379 is entirely devoted to a spectacular private owner’s suite.  The yachts exterior profile features sharp angles and edges softened by the large prominent windows that allow plenty of natural light to penetrate the superyacht.

The builder of the 45m Motor Yacht 379 by Dubois Naval Architects is yet to be finalised and she is expected to have an efficient cruising speed of around 15 knots.

The first Oyster 100 Sailing Yacht SARAFIN completes her sailing trials

September 19, 2011

Oyster‘s sailing yacht Sarafin, the first Oyster 100 superyacht, has concluded her sailing trials with great success and she will be handed over to her owners in October. Sailing Yacht Sarafin‘s (100-01) launch marks a successful conclusion of the first phase of a long-term project, which has brought together the strong and award-wining trio of Dubois Naval Architects, Oyster Group and RMK Marine.

This combined experience has produced a Superyacht that matches the best in the world and offers every customer the opportunity to enjoy the smoothest process available for getting afloat, providing a sophisticated entry into Superyacht ownership. The concept, launched in the heyday of the pre-recession world, is even more appropriate today; building a one-off custom superyacht is a challenging venture. The market, during recession, has seen the determined buyer move larger, into 50m – 100m sailing yacht projects. The Oyster-Dubois-RMK series-produced offering of the Oyster 100 and Oyster 125 sailing yachts, gives a purchaser who wants a more predictable and faster means of owning a proven Superyacht, a less time-demanding (during build) solution of getting afloat.

By selecting a series-produced yacht, owners share the benefits of proven design, construction and engineering, and can devote their attention to stamping their individuality on the interior. Oyster’s commitment to build these superyachts to Lloyds +100A1 G6 MCH and MCA LY2 classification, the most stringent in the world that guarantees the structural integrity and engineering of each yacht, is not only the highest endorsement of the Oyster Superyacht fleet’s quality of construction, but underpins the continued value of each owner’s investment.

Oyster CEO, David Tydeman commented: “Oyster Group is world renowned for its craftsmen built and solidly engineered blue-water cruising yachts. What is less well known is that Oyster also owns Southampton Yacht Services, a yard specialising in classic Superyacht refit and refurbishment. Oyster Group was already in the ‘Superyacht market’ prior to the launch of the Oyster 100 and 125, and by teaming up with Dubois and leading shipyard RMK Marine, builders of the award winning 52m ketch, Nazenin V, has given us the opportunity to challenge all parts of Oyster Group and pull together its hidden talents.

Of course, creating such a start-up in the current global economic conditions, has been a tough challenge, which we’ve risen above and delivered. I’m intensely proud and somewhat in awe of the Oyster and RMK team who has made this happen in the face of regular scepticism from the established market who naturally want to resist a newcomer!

The Oyster 100 is not simply a large Oyster 82, we have raised our game and risen to the challenge, entering the premier league of engineering and shipbuilding large yachts. The new Oyster 885, which will be on the water in 2012, illustrates that what we are learning from entering the Superyacht market is already enabling Oyster to enhance our whole range – from the Oyster 46 to the Oyster 125.”

Ed Dubois writes after visiting the completed Oyster 100-01 sailing yacht SARAFIN:

“I was very happy as I left the shipyard in Istanbul, having seen the first completed Oyster 100. It is wonderful how Oyster has managed to combine their reputation for building strong, seaworthy craft with the quality and finish that is now expected in the best sailing Superyachts. As designers, we are of course full of admiration for the builders of our craft and at the same time very particular about who we work with.

The all-important relationship between designer and builder is crucial to the success of any project. We now have over 50 yachts afloat of 100ft and over in the world, and this experience combines with that of the best shipyards to keep the quality at the top.

We are therefore delighted that Oyster has joined this club and we look forward with confidence and excitement to see the Oyster 125 also reaching completion.”

Ufuk Güçlü, General Manager at RMK shipyard said:

“RMK Marine has always believed in the benefits of this unique partnership. It is a very special opportunity to work with Dubois and Oyster and it is very satisfying the potential has been realised. Working closely together as a team, each party has brought its own special contribution to the end product and through this teamwork we are providing wonderful yachts for the clients. We are certain that this team will continue to enjoy success together.

For RMK Marine, our aim is always to provide uncompromising quality and craftsmanship. Having completed our first Oyster yacht in composite, we are proud to have built in all the major build materials used in the superyacht sector, including steel, aluminium and now composites for both motor and sailing yachts, which demonstrates the unusually wide capability of the RMK yard. We will keep on pushing forward and aim to deliver superb quality yachts to our clients and we look forward to launching the next Oyster superyacht in the near future.”

Ocean Yacht Systems to supply thruster for Fitzroy Yachts next Dubois 50m sailing yacht (Project G50)

June 28, 2011

Ocean Yacht Systems (OYS) based in Christchurch UK, have secured a second contract to supply the thrusters on the next Dubois 50m sailing yacht to be built at Fitzroy Yachts, New Zealand.

Ocean Yacht Systems to supply thruster for Fitzroy Yachts next Dubois 50m sailing yacht (Project G50)

Ocean Yacht Systems to supply thruster for Fitzroy Yachts next Dubois 50m sailing yacht (Project G50)

OYS have previously supplied bow and stern thrusters to the award winning 50m superyacht Zefira. After successful commissioning and trials on board S/Y Zefira in Auckland, the second Dubois 50m sailing yacht (Project G50) planned for build at the Yard was also awarded to OYS.

OYS has supplied 2 x 99kW (133hp) custom hydraulic swing thrusters for the Fitzroy Yachts 50m Flybridge Sloop G50. The unique thrusters are designed to be highly efficient as well as being mechanically locked in place when raised. When retracted there is little evidence of the thruster at all, leaving behind a completely faired hull providing minimal drag and optimising the sailing experience of these performance orientated superyachts.

“We find their (OYS’s) attitude and approach to business to be outstanding amongst our many suppliers,” comments Rodney Martin, MD for Fitzroy Yachts, “We want to keep OYS as the thruster of choice for our yachts and our plan is to recommend future clients to accept OYS as our preferred equipment.”

The 50 Dubois ‘Project G50’ is currently well underway at Fitzroy Yachts with launch planned in 2012.

Yacht ‘Timoneer’ wins Dubois Cup 2011 Yacht Race

June 08, 2011

Sailing yacht Timoneer wins light-airs gybing duel at Dubois Cup 2011 Luck, judgement and light airs conspired to create classic competition during Race 2 of the 2011 Dubois Cup. Veteran cruising yacht Timoneer took full advantage of contrary conditions and fickle breezes that ought not to have favoured the heavier boats, and took both line honours and the overall prize.

“You’ve got to be either clever or lucky to do what we did, and today we were both,” said her jubilant skipper and helmsman, Phil Wade.

Off to a prompt midday start off Sardinia’s Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the eight-yacht fleet of Dubois-designed superyachts made an awe-inspiring spectacle as they set off on the pursuit event at three-minute intervals. Competition to windward was intense. Nostromo, second to start, was first to round the Monaci lighthouse, followed by the 50-metre Zefira, making up five places. Third to round the rocks was Ganesha, 39 metres, then the 41-metre Inmocean and Timoneer, 45 metres. The 57-metre Twizzle, the largest yacht in the fleet, led Drumbeat, 53 metres, and the 40-metre Tenaz.

As the wind began to fail tacticians had crucial decisions to make. Timoneer gybed and took an inshore course that was to prove decisive as the rest of the superyacht fleet stood well out to sea as the wind began to falter.

Sailing Yacht Nostromo’s owner Andrew Cook admitted he was disappointed with the outcome. “We should have won this race,” he said. “Conditions favoured the lighter boats.” S/Y Twizzle was rewarded with fifth overall. “With hindsight, we might have made a few tactical errors,” her captain, Gordon Percy, conceded. ” The boss is disappointed. But this is only our third regatta – we’re still learning.”

The ultra-competitive sailing yacht Ganesha, 2009 Dubois Cup winner, sustained a five-minute penalty for crossing the start a few seconds early. “We put in ten gybes on the downwind leg, and missed third place by two minutes, including the penalty. So we learned a lot today,” said tactician Matt Humphries.”

“Events like this can be very educational and useful for the crew, as well as fun,” said the captain of sixth-placed Drumbeat, Michel Personnic. “But everybody wanted to beat Timoneer today.”

Trophies all round at the Dubois Cup Yacht Race:

Glittering prizes close ‘best ever’ Dubois Cup A glittering poolside prizegiving and dinner dance, complete with live jazz band, brought the curtain down on the 2011 Dubois Cup last night. Hailed as the most successful Cup so far, the superyacht regatta was hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

Presenting the trophies to participants – 14 magnificent craft, including two Dubois-designed motor yachts – Ed Dubois paid tribute to owners and crew for taking part and making the event one of the most relaxed, stylish and friendly on the superyacht circuit.

Every yacht received a hand-engraved black crystal bowl as a memento of the third Dubois Cup, in the superb sailing waters off Sardinia’s yachting capital, Porto Cervo. Those placed first, second and third in the racing were also presented with trophies from the YCCS. Overall winner and 2011 Cup holder was Timoneer, who received the Dubois Cup, a sculpted carbon-fibre sail designed by Dubois Naval Architects. The beautifully-sailed Nostromo was second while the sleek and powerful Zefira took third place.

The competitive sloop Ganesha was awarded for her participation in all three Dubois Cups so far, and after inviting all owners and captains aboard to an impromptu cocktail party after the first race was abandoned, Twizzle was recognised for her hospitality. The new motor yacht Turquoise, easily the largest spectator craft, was singled out for being the latest addition to the Dubois fleet.

The 2011 Dubois Cup was also the launch platform for the Dubois Child Cancer Fund, a charity set up with the support of yacht owners in recognition of Minna Dubois, now aged ten and doing well, who was diagnosed in 2005 with neuroblastoma, a rare but invariably serious type of childhood cancer.

The fourth Dubois Cup will take place at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Sardinia in 2013.

Dubois Cup Superyacht Sailing Regatta 2011

June 05, 2011

In the matchless surroundings of “the best yacht club in the world” the stage is set for a classic superyachting event. The regatta village at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (Sardinia) is buzzing, the yachts have assembled, and registration is under way for the third Dubois Cup.

“We’re really looking forward to it,” says Amy Galloway, captain of the 40-metre sloop Tenaz – a seasoned campaigner in previous superyacht meetings but making her first appearance at the Dubois Cup.

The Dubois Cup

The Dubois Cup - a superyacht sailing regatta

The intricate coastline around Port Cervo, Sardinia, is a favourite among racing skippers, for its dramatic scenery and unpredictable wind shifts.  The sound between the Maddalena islands and the Sardinian mainland has a reputation for blowing hard – although the forecast for the weekend is currently for light conditions.

The 30-metre Pendennis-built Nostromo is another Cup debutante. “We’ve hired Harold Cudmore as tactician,” says her owner, Andrew Cook. “After all, you’ve got to make an effort. I’ve brought my son along and four of his friends as extra crew. But mainly it’s a bit of fun.”

With no more than 10 knots of wind currently promised by the met men over the next two days, the racing will be a test of tactics. “These yachts get going in about eight knots of breeze,” says Malcolm McKeon of Dubois Naval Architects. “Upwind at that speed they start to generate their own wind.”

Dubois Cup 2011

Dubois Cup 2011

A total of nine yachts have registered for the racing, with current cup-holder Ganesha expected to defend her title tenaciously.  Perhaps the most eagerly-awaited contest will be between the two giant ketches.   The 53-metre Drumbeat won the Rolex Transatlantic in 2005, and Twizzle, 57.5 metres overall and launched last year, is just back from competing in the Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and St Barth’s Bucket.

Richard Hollis, captain of Inmocean, the classically-styled 41-metre sloop, is taking a more relaxed view: “We haven’t brought  a spinnaker – we’re treating it as a fun family event. We might even put a fishing pole out if there’s no wind!”

Three sailing superyachts have joined the event but will not race, including the 53-metre Nirvana, while Turquoise and Ad Lib, two Dubois-designed motor yachts of 44 and 55 metres, will also help ensure that the spectator fleet is as impressive as the racing.

The first race takes place on Sunday 5 June, starting off Porto Cervo at 13.00.

With one day to go before the official start of the third Dubois Cup, the atmosphere at Porto Cervo’s chic Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is building to fever pitch. An awe-inspiring line-up of Dubois-designed superyachts has been assembling throughout the day.

Dubois Cup

Sailing yachts Drumbeat and Twizzle – two giant ketches measuring over 110 metres between them – brought the fleet total to ten so far, joining Nostromo, Ganesha, Zefira and Nirvana. The well-travelled 40-metre sloop Tenaz and the classically-styled Timoneer and Inmocean had already claimed their berths on Molo C, alongside the New Zealand-built Sovereign, and late entry Imagine.

Two Dubois-designed motor yachts, the magnificent 55m Turquoise and the sleek Alloy Yachts-constructed Ad Lib, have also joined in the festivities.

Registration and final arrivals will take place on Saturday, before an evening Welcome Reception on the terrace of the YCCS.
