Dometic Marine new WhisperFan Controller

November 15, 2011

Dometic Marine, the world’s leading supplier of marine air conditioning presents its new WhisperFan Controller to the European market at this year’s METS. Offering yacht owners an easy and economical solution to very loud AC-motor-driven fans, the WhisperFan Controller uses pulse-width modulation (PWM) to make any AC-driven fan as silent as a DC-driven fan, while also offering overload protection for the blower motor.

Dometic Marine WhisperFan Controller

Dometic Marine WhisperFan Controller

Compatible with all Cruisair® and Marine Air Systems® cabin controls, the WhisperFan Controller is simply installed between the electrical box and the blower. By pulsing the voltage hundreds of times faster than is possible with triacs (electronic switches) used by other fan-quieting technologies, the innovative device ensures a smoother motor current, resulting in extreme low-noise output.

The WhisperFan Controller makes blower fans up to 6 dBA (decibels adjusted) quieter than standard speed-controlled AC blowers. That’s a drop of about 50% in what the human ear can perceive.

“Unlike any other fan-quieting device on the market, the WhisperFan Controller also provides versatile user-defined fan-speed manipulation and supports cabin controls with 3, 5 and 6 speeds,” comments Matteo Giovanetti, Director of Technology, Dometic Marine. “For example, if the yacht owner feels there is too much of a jump between the blower’s ‘low’ and ‘medium’ settings and not enough of a difference between the ‘medium’ and ‘high’ settings, they can readjust and fine-tune fan output for each setting to suit their preferences.”

By cleverly monitoring the electrical current going to the fan motor, the WhisperFan Controller will shut down if the level goes too high, providing overload protection for itself and the blower it is connected to. This is a smarter method of overload protection than what a fan typically uses, which is based on heat level.

Supporting blowers that are 208-240VAC/50-60 Hz for either direct expansion (DX) or chilled water systems, the WhisperFan Controller works with blowers up to 3 amps.

Dometic Marine is launching its extensive range of new products to the European market at METS, including the WhisperFan Controller. For further information please visit the Dometic Marine team at stands 01.615, 01.715 and 10.417 during METS, 15th – 17th November 2011.

“As a private charter vessel, the ‘Lady of the Lake’ will be used to entertain up to 150 guests from her home port at Riverside Resort in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The provision of reliable air conditioning aboard is essential to ensure the comfort of passengers and crew as well as satisfy owner expectations,” comments Bernie Clements, Purchasing Manager Skipper Manufacturing. “Having worked with Dometic for several years, the team has proven to offer HVAC solutions which meet the specific requirements of virtually any application and they are also on hand throughout the duration of the project to provide exceptional technical support.”

Scheduled for delivery during November 2011 the complete Cruisair HVAC system includes a 3-stage chiller with 21 standard and low-profile air handlers which are designed to use minimal overhead space. Dometic Marine’s latest project with Skipper Manufacturing is testament to the company’s customer-orientated strategy which outlines support, selection and service to address the challenges faced by designers, yard owners and yacht operators.

Dometic Marine also provides the broadest selection of chilled water systems including air handlers and controls, enabling the company to customise air conditioning solutions to satisfy a multitude of requirements for space and cooling capacity on-board. Dometic Marine presents its new Eskimo Ice EI540D Ice Cube at FLIBS

October 27, 2011

Dometic Marine, the world’s leading manufacturer of innovative marine products, introduces its new Eskimo Ice EI540D Ice Cube at Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Making up to 540 lbs (245 kg) of freshwater flaked-ice per day, the cube-shaped EI540D permits ice to travel twice as far from the unit to the fish box as earlier models, providing a better location flexibility on-board.

Eskimo Ice EI540D Ice Cube by Dometic Marine

By compacting the flaked-ice into cylindrical ice pellets, the ice can travel farther without melting and produces fewer clogs for continuous ice production. The unit’s small footprint makes it ideal for smaller fishing vessels with a big demand for ice. The EI540D Ice Cube is easily installed below deck or in the engine room and ice is pushed through a flexible insulated hose up to 30 ft (9.1 m) in length to virtually any fish box or cooler location on-board.

Measuring 16”x16”x16” (413mm x 413mm x 413mm) and boasting a compact design, the EI540D Ice Cube complements the existing range of Eskimo Ice machines, which includes the larger self-contained or split-gas EI600D models. The EI540D Ice Cube replaces the EI250D Ice Cube model, and produces 116% more ice than the earlier model in the same-sized cabinet.

“The Eskimo Ice range produces flaked-ice, which has a smooth and rounded shape that reduces the risk of damaging the flesh of the fish. It is delivered directly to the fish box from its location below deck. The new EI540D gives sport fishermen more flexibility as to where they can locate the ice machine because of the longer and narrower ice-delivery hose,” comments Bill Liptak, Product Engineer, Dometic Marine.

A smart digital monitor mounted remotely on the bridge or in a cabin is conveniently located for ease of operation without making a trip down to the engine room. It reports the system’s operational status and any alarms to skipper and crew at all times if problems with pressure, water and ice levels, or blockages are detected. If there are any problems they can be resolved and the system reset as soon as possible to preserve the on-going production and supply of ice.

Dometic Marine has supplied fishing yacht owners with crushed ice systems for more than 25 years and is presenting its extensive range of new products, including the Eskimo Ice EI540D Ice Cube, at this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. For further information please visit the Dometic Marine team at Booths 1207-1208 in the Engine Tent and Booths 38-39 in the Entrance Tent.

Dometic Marine’s new variable frequency drive nominated for DAME Award

October 24, 2011

The world’s leading supplier of marine air conditioning, Dometic Marine, has been chosen for a prominent DAME Award for its new Bypassable Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). Released at IBEX 2011, the innovative device is the first Bypassable VFD introduced to the marine market and is created to provide builders and owners with extensive benefits including the elimination of electrical and navigation system interference.

Dometic Marine - Bypassable Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)

Dometic Marine - Bypassable Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)

Frank Marciano, President of Dometic Marine, commented: “This is the second consecutive year that one of our products has been nominated for a DAME Award and it is a testament to our expert engineers and design team who have yet again worked tirelessly to develop an innovative, problem-solving product”.

“For years, yacht builders, owners and engineers have tolerated the unwanted side effects of VFDs that are used to gently start and stop a chiller’s compressor. Representing a clear breakthrough in marine VFD technology, Dometic’s Bypassable VFD not only eliminates start-up surge, but after the start-up is completed it seamlessly disconnects itself, eliminating all harmonic distortion and RFI.”

Used to smoothly and gently start an air conditioning system’s compressor, VFDs eliminate large current surges that would otherwise interrupt the yacht’s AC power supply. Although providing a significant benefit, standard VFDs also cause harmonic distortion and radio frequency interference (RFI) with electrical and navigation systems and require the installation of line filters and conditioners to eliminate the disturbance.

Easily installed within the yacht’s engine room, Dometic’s Bypassable VFD is electrically connected between the power supply and the air conditioning system’s compressor. Once in operation the innovative device smoothly and gradually increases the compressor’s motor current without any start-up surge.

Unlike standard marine VFDs, once at speed Dometic’s Bypassable VFD is precisely synchronized with the current and then seamlessly bypassed so it is no longer part of the electrical circuit, which eliminates noise and radio frequency interference (RFI). Just before the compressor is turned off, the sophisticated Bypassable VFD is brought back into the circuit to gradually ramp down frequency and voltage and bring the compressor to a smooth stop.

Controlling up to four compressors, Dometic’s Bypassable VFD is especially cost-effective for chillers with two to four stages. Standard VFD technology requires one VFD per compressor. The innovative device also protects the compressor by monitoring input voltage and output current and will shut down if a problem is detected. Its unique digital display allows users to monitor operation and faults.
To find out more about Dometic’s Bypassable Variable Frequency Drive, please visit stands 01.615, 01.715 and 10.417 during METS, 15th – 17th November 2011.
