The 6th annual award scheme, specifically for businesses in the New Forest area, aims to celebrate the achievements of local business and highlight good practice. Discovery Yachts is a highly successful builder of exceptionally high quality, semi-custom, blue-water cruising yachts designed for short-handed performance sailing.

The company has continued to invest significantly throughout the economic downturn and has recently taken delivery of a state-of-the-art CNC 5 Axis milling and cutting machine in addition to some highly specilised veneer press equipment which has enabled Discovery to become a centre of excellence for its bespoke joinery and interior fittings.

Recent investment in new product design was followed by the launch of their internationally award winning Discovery Cat 50 yacht in 2010 and the company has just started the build of a new Discovery 57 blue-water monohull designed by Ron Holland and Ken Freivokh which will be launched in 2012.

The company is passionate about skills and has doubled its apprenticeship scheme with 13 young people gaining a broad education in boatbuilding skills within the yard whilst also attending day release courses at local colleges.

Discovery Yachts, world-known UK class builder of blue-water cruising yachts, has bought a new CNC 5 Axis cutting and milling machine for over £150,000. The new machine arrived at Harbour Yard recently replacing the previous 3 Axis equipment and started its first day of working this week.

The new 5 Axis machines will enable the company to accurately cut complex shapes for the highly crafted bespoke interiors that are the hallmark of Discovery’s range of award winning yachts. The investment in these highly technical precision machines will result in a significantly more efficient and faster throughput for the in-house joinery shop as well as enabling the company to increase its capacity and improve efficiencies.

Discovery Yachts is one of the few UK boatbuilders able to offer its customers in-house craftsmanship of such quality and this new investment together with its recent purchase of bespoke veneer press, cutting and finishing equipment takes their in-house capabilities to a new level. Discovery customers are now able to enjoy a full choice of interior timbers, individual designs and bespoke inlay work for their luxury blue-water yacht.

Commenting on the new equipment, Managing Director, Nigel Stuart said, “Our significant investment in this state-of-the-art 5 axis equipment during these uncertain economic times confirms our commitment to driving the business forward and ensuring growth through innovation and investment. This investment will ensure that we can offer our discerning clients the highest quality in-house joinery together with the opportunity for unique and personal designs to be incorporated into the build of their yachts.”

In the last month, Discovery Yachts has completed and handed over three new luxury yachts to owners as well as announcing the launch of their latest design, the Discovery 57 superyacht at the recent Southampton Boat Show.
