The award winner state-of-the-art catamaran yacht Discovery 50, built by the UK shipyard Discovery Yachts will be present at Strictly Sail at the Miami International Boat Show, berth 45C Bayside, from 16th -20th February 2012. Two-handed blue water cruising Discovery 50 superyacht´s exterior was designed by the world-known Dixon Yacht Designs and features sleek lines, fast sailing performance and luxury and spacious accommodation.

The light and airy, contemporary interior, designed by Ken Freivokh, offers a sumptious home afloat with a choice of cabin configurations and semi-customised interior options. The numerous portlights, windows and hatches ensures exceptional visibility from the navigation station and spacious living area. The galley is practical and easy to use as well as offering extensive work surfaces, plenty of stowage and generous fridge and freezer capacity.

The cockpit of the Discovery Cat 50 yacht offers a generous dining area with specially angled seats for real comfort as well as two magnificent sun beds where you can lie sheltered from the wind. The transom decks provide another recreation area for lounging and barbecuing with steps to the water for swimming and diving.

The two-seater helm position is part of the cockpit, whist being raised to give clear all round visibility and features all the sailing controls to ensure easy handling for just two people.

Discovery Yachts is a highly successful builder of exceptionally high quality, semi-custom, blue-water cruising yachts designed for short-handed performance sailing.

The company has continued to invest significantly throughout the economic downturn and has recently taken delivery of a state-of-the-art CNC 5 Axis milling and cutting machine in addition to some highly specilised veneer press equipment which has enabled Discovery to become a centre of excellence for its bespoke joinery and interior fittings.

Recent investment in new product design was followed by the launch of their internationally award winning Discovery Cat 50 yacht in 2010 and the company has just started the build of a new Discovery 57 blue-water monohull designed by Ron Holland and Ken Freivokh which will be launched in 2012.

The company is passionate about skills and has doubled its apprenticeship scheme with 13 young people gaining a broad education in boatbuilding skills within the yard whilst also attending day release courses at local colleges.

Discovery Yachts will be showcasing the ultimate in blue-water cruising yachts at this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show where they will be exhibiting the highly acclaimed Discovery 55 sailing yacht and the award-winning Discovery 50 Catamaran. Discovery Yachts will also be unveiling the designs for a stunning new blue-water cruiser, the Discovery 57 sailing yacht which will be launched in 2012.

Discovery Yachts is enjoying a very successful and busy year which began with them winning 4 International awards at the Miami Boat Show in February. During the year the company has opened a new multi-purpose yacht manufacturing hall as well as refurbishing a number of existing halls. Recently the company has made significant investments in high-end veneer machinery and a precision 5 axis CNC machine.

Discovery Yachts employs over 100 staff including in-house naval architects, designers and expert craftsmen.

Members of the media are invited to view the Discovery 55 and Discovery 50 Catamaran on berths M246/M248 and to learn about the new Discovery 57 being launched at the show. Test sail opportunities for the 55, 67 and Cat 50 will be available after the show.

World renowned designers Ken Freivokh and Rob Doyle representing Ron Holland will be available on Friday 16th September 2011 to answer questions about the designs and award-winning features of Discovery’s range of blue-water yachts.

Shadow Business Minister, John Denham MP, paid a fact-finding visit to bespoke yacht builder, Discovery Yachts, yesterday at their Marchwood base to find out more behind the success of this manufacturer of luxury blue-water cruising yachts.

The Shadow Minister met with Discovery Yachts Managing Director, Nigel Stuart to learn about the success and scale of the yacht manufacturing operation of this Hampshire Company. John Denham MP was particularly impressed with the company’s recent investment in new manufacturing halls, a bespoke joinery workshop and high tech equipment which means that Discovery Yachts can offer the very highest quality workmanship to their prospective owners.

The Shadow Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills was extremely interested to meet with a number of young apprentices employed by Discovery Yachts to ensure that technical craft skills are retained within the UK marine industry.

Commenting on his visit, John Denham MP said “As Shadow Business Secretary, I am very keen to see UK manufacturing success stories and I have seen first-hand how British boat builders and their supply chain have a reputation for good design, innovation and quality.”

Responding, Nigel Stuart, Managing Director of Discovery Yachts noted, “It is reassuring that our local MP, John Denham, showed a keen interest in assisting local business particularly in these difficult economic times, his interest in our expanding number of apprentices and the skills we have here at Discovery Yachts was encouraging.”

Discovery Yachts will be exhibiting the Discovery 55 and Discovery Cat 50 at the forthcoming PSP Southampton Boat Show from 16th -25th September 2011 on berths M246/M248. In addition the company will be announcing the launch of a new Discovery 57 blue-water cruising yacht for 2012.

Discovery Yachts was started in 1998 by John Charnley. The business was founded on the desire to create a world cruising yacht designed specifically for those wishing to enjoy extended bluewater cruising without the need for a crew.

Discovery Yachts has announced plans to expand production facilities at its base in Harbour Close, Marchwood, taking over the remaining units on the site. The expansion, which will take place in February this year, will allow the company to build the award-winning Discovery 50 Catamaran alongside its monohull models, the Discovery 55 and Discovery 67.

The announcement follows another successful year for Discovery Yachts with the significant sales across the Discovery fleet and the company’s yachts achieving high acclaim at a number of international yacht shows. The Discovery 50 Catamaran received Discovery 50 Catamaran received two top US awards, the Best Cruising Multihull and Best Accommodation Awards after the Annapolis Boat Show in USA and Boat of the Year’s Best Catamaran and Best Import Boat (to the USA).

Nigel Stuart, Managing Director of Discovery Yachts commented, “The company already has full ownership of four large units at Harbour Close, so with the planned expansion we will now have a fully integrated production facility, with our specialist joinery and laminating departments expanding into the new space.

This expansion is an important landmark for Discovery Yachts and shows how significantly the company has grown since its creation. Building all three models on one site will be of great benefit, increasing production and allowing for greater flexibility within the Discovery team.”

Discovery Yachts enters 2011 with a healthy sales book going into 2012. The additional space provided by this expansion will allow it to grow its work force of highly skilled craftsmen to meet the demand for its superb ocean going, luxury yachts.

US Sailboat magazine SAIL has presented the Discovery 50 Cat with two Awards following its appearance at the US Sailboat Show in Annapolis. SAIL Magazine sailed the yacht after the show, awarding the Discovery 50 Cat with the coveted Best Cruising Multihull Award as part of the publication’s annual Best Boat awards, commenting, “This is a well thought out and beautifully finished cruiser”.

Judges viewed the interior of the yacht during the boat show and came to an exciting conclusion for its British builders, “This Cat was so impressive that we had no hesitation in also presenting the Discovery 50 Cat with the 2011 Accommodations Award”.

Nigel Stuart, Managing Director of Discovery Yachts said, “This is a wonderful accolade for not only the design of our catamaran but also for the exceptional British craftsmanship that makes this yacht so special in the world of Multihulls. SAIL is a highly influential magazine in the USA and we are extremely proud to have achieved this level of recognition with our first catamaran”.

The Discovery 50 Cat that was exhibited at Annapolis had undertaken a transatlantic crossing prior to the event and now continues to cruise America’s east coast.
