World’s Largest Sailing Catamaran Hemisphere engineered by BMT Nigel Gee

September 22, 2011

BMT Nigel Gee, a subsidiary of the BMT Group, is pleased to announce its association with sailing yacht Hemisphere, the 44m VPLP design catamaran recently launched from Pendennis Shipyard, making her world debut at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show. Luxury catamaran HEMISPHERE is the largest sailing catamaran in the world measuring 44m (145ft). Her huge size and quality build make her incredibly spacious and luxurious. The Hemisphere yacht can sail or motor at high speeds and being a catamaran she is also very stable at sea. S/Y HEMISPHERE has 8 crew and can accommodate up to 12 charter guests in luxury in 4 double and 1 twin cabin.

BMT Nigel Gee was initially contracted to undertake full structural design and analysis of the superyacht Hemisphere by direct calculation. Definition of global load cases and subsequent analysis was undertaken with extensive use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) used to analyse both stress and deflection from both global loads and high localised loads at the mast base and rig attachments.

The structural design and engineering of the charter yacht Hemisphere have pushed the boundaries of classification society rules.  BMT worked closely with the vessel’s classification society during the development of a new set of rules for the structural design of vessels of this type and size which subsequently became BV Yacht Rules.

BMT delivered a full Class Level Design, ultimately leading to provision of a comprehensive detailed production engineering package. Utilising ARL ShipConstructor for the development of the structure and pipe work systems, BMT provided full CNC cutting files and pipe spools as well as extensive engineering for the yachts complex outfit items.

Part of BMT Nigel Gee’s detailed design contract was to provide weight guarantees for the structure of the yacht. On the completion of each structural unit, weighed weights were returned from the yard and compared with both the early engineering estimates which formed the basis of the guarantee, and the detailed 3d structural production model from which the CNC cut parts were developed. These figures have shown that the yachts structure was delivered 6% below the contracted structural weight estimate.

James Roy, Yacht Design Director at BMT Nigel Gee comments, “It has been a real pleasure to work on Hemisphere and the tenacity of her skipper Gavin Bladen is highly commendable. Through this project we have developed further our relationship with the VPLP office and collaborated on even larger ground breaking designs for sailing catamarans up to nearly 80m.”

BMT Nigel Gee has designed and engineered some of the world’s largest and most complex catamarans, including the 80m Sea Fighter for the US Navy, a 55 knots Gas Turbine powered naval vessel.

44m Charter Yacht Hemisphere launched by Pendennis -The world’s largest sailing catamaran

July 25, 2011

Sailing catamaran Hemisphere, the yachting world’s most eagerly awaited superyacht, has recently been launched by the Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth and is undergoing sea trials and final completion works before exhibiting at the Monaco Yacht Show 2011 in September. With an overall length of 44.2m (145ft) and a gross tonnage of just under 500, S/Y Hemisphere boasts the title of being the world’s largest luxury sailing catamaran and is also available for luxury yacht charters.

Luxury superyacht builder Pendennis built the yacht Hemisphere that features naval architecture by the leading multihull architects Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) who designed the 33rd America’s Cup winning multihull. Celebrated superyacht interior designers Michael Leach Design completed the luxury catamaran Hemispheres’ interior. The result is an innovative design brimming with creatively practical features that blend speed and stability with both space and style to encompass the pure essence of innovation in the multihull market.

With a draft of just over 3m (9.8ft), the Hemisphere yacht boasts an ease of manoeuvrability and the scope to cruise shallow draft destinations inaccessible to monohulls of comparable size which is great news for luxury yacht charter guests being able to anchor close to secluded bays and beaches.

Hemisphere’s decks and rig are remarkably uncluttered as visible deck hardware has been minimised and the 58m (190ft) high mast soars free of spreaders with all lines run internally. Tenders are also stowed out of sight and the port transom houses a full watersports and dive locker served by a large hydraulic swim platform.

Destined for the luxury charter market in tropical climates, superyacht Hemisphere boasts a spacious flybridge with jacuzzi, sunpads and shaded dining along with a vast indoor/outdoor living area on the main deck. The relaxed and elegant interior by Michael Leach Designs is the epitome of contemporary chic and the yacht’s exceptional volume offers a high degree of luxury. The yachts dark wood floors are offset by a soothing neutral colour palette with countless customised touches such as seventeen different types of granite and sixteen leather finishes, creating an ‘island living meets deluxe Pacific Rim ambience’.

Sailing yacht Hemispheres is able to accommodate 12 charter guests in 5 comfortable, luxurious ensuite cabins and the yacht will operate with a professional crew of 8.

Megayacht Hemisphere’s inaugural season this summer will be enjoyed by her owners in the Mediterranean however she will be available for luxury yacht charters this winter in the Caribbean with charter rates starting at EUR 175,000 per week. Following this, she will transit the Panama Canal into the South Pacific for summer 2012. Conceptualised and built for cruising the tropics, the Hemisphere yacht is certain to set a new benchmark for luxury charters in some of the most exotic locations on the planet.

Hemisphere will make her debut at the Monaco Yacht Show 2011 in September, showcased by Pendennis. Contact the CharterWorld team here if you are intersted in chartering the luxury cat Hemisphere.
