CROATIA Yacht Charter: 10 Exceptional Charter Yachts available in 2013

January 28, 2013

Increasingly popular as a summer vacation destination for luxury yacht charterers, Croatia yacht charter offers visitors over a thousand islands with distinct vegetation, charming old ports, seaside villages and a remarkably clean water full of life. The Mediterranean country is one of the ecologically best preserved parts of Europe. Croatia’s northern part of the coastline can be described as somewhat tranquil, whereas the southern coast, also known as the Dalmatian Coast, is livelier, busier, with plenty of beautiful luxury superyachts on display.  There is a vast selection of outstanding charter yachts available in Croatia, ranging from smaller and sportier motor yachts,  catamarans, lovely sailing yachts, through to imposing luxury mega yachts.

Hvar in Croatia

A huge selection of destinations and spectacular sites to discover during Croatia yacht charter make it a wonderful choice for a summer vacation and many places are well worth a short daily trip inland. Risnjak, Paklenica, the Plitvice Lakes and Northern Velebit in the mountainous area are just some of the natural wonders of this country. In the coastal area the Kornati Archipelago, the island of Mljet, the Brijuni Archipelago and the Krka waterfalls showcase Croatia as a true jewel of the Mediterranean.

For party-goes Dubrovnik and Hvar are the best places to be, with numerous night-clubs, fine dining restaurants and of course the beautiful people. For those wanting to escape the bustling cities after an excellent night out, there are plenty of hideaways around the many surrounding islands and islets.

To add even more interest, cruise the azure blue waters of the Adriatic and discover the island which is one of the last habitats of the griffon vulture in Europe. If you are a devoted nature lover you can swim in the sea with an adopted dolphin or, if you are particularly lucky, encounter the mysterious and rare Mediterranean monk seal. Croatia is also a home to numerous monuments and sites found on the UNESCO World Heritage List, such as the Diocletian Palace and Medieval Split, Old Town of Dubrovnik, the Early-Christian Euphrasius Basilica Complex in Porec, the historical Core of Trogir, the National Park of Plitvice, Starigrad Plain or St Jacob’s Catherdral in Sibenik.

Delicious Croatian coastal cuisine is a mixture of Greek, Roman, Illyrian and Mediterranean influences, featuring fresh seafood specialities, prepared in a number of different ways accompanied by a selection of vegetables, olive oil, prosciutto or fresh bread. The meals are then coupled with local wines, such as Babic, Malvasia, Prosecco and Vrbnik Zlahtina as well as a selection of liqueurs like the popular Maraschino.

Double award-winning triumph for Holland Jachtbouw 42m Calliope Superyacht

November 28, 2011

Holland Jachbouw 42m motor yacht Calliope has now received not one but two major industry motoryacht awards in her class. Having already won a prestigious Neptune Trophy for the best planing motoryacht in 2011 World Superyacht Awards, the stunning Calliope superyacht has recently received the prominent Showboats Exterior Design & Styling Award for a semi-displacement motoryacht.

“This is a remarkable achievement for any superyacht,” comments Tako van Ineveld, Commercial Director at Holland Jachtbouw. “But it is surely unique that a yard like Holland Jachtbouw – which has made its name for creating famous sail yachts like charter yacht Windrose of Amsterdam and Athos yacht – could beat all the dedicated powerboat yards to win these two awards. Moreover, Calliope is only our second motoryacht, which speaks volumes for the way we have been able to incorporate sailing yacht standards of finish and fine detailing into the fully custom powerboat environment.”

The luxury yacht Calliope’s double award winning performance is also a testimony to her owner’s dedication to perfection and the exquisite design by Bill Langan and Rhoades Young Design. ” Calliope has been dubbed ‘the ultimate Gentlemen’s yacht’ and I think this is a fair assessment,” Van Ineveld continues. ” She is by no means a typical motoryacht in terms of her colour or shaping, and has a very distinctive look. The fabulous interior is also a key reason why our industry peers have been so impressed with this fascinating project.”

These are busy times at Holland Jachtbouw. The build of the awesome new J-Class sailing yacht Rainbow is now at an advanced stage as the yard gears up for the 2012 regattas in and around Cowes. Construction also recently got underway on another magnificent sailing yacht, a 45m high performance sloop from the boards of Dixon Yacht Design. And the yard’s success with motoryachts will continue, having just signed the contact for an extensive interior refit of the 42m motor yacht Life SAGA.

The Rhode Island Langan Design Wins Superyacht Award for yacht Calliope

May 17, 2011

The NEWPORT, Rhode Island based Langan Design Partners has announced that Calliope, the latest motor yacht from the office’s drawing boards, has won the World Super Yacht Award for the best Three-Deck Semi-Displacement or Planing Motor Yacht.

Yacht Calliope

Yacht Calliope

This award comes as a fitting tribute to the company’s founder, the late Bill Langan of Jamestown, R.I., who led the design of this project from its initial conceptual phase in 2006 all the way to her launch in early summer of 2010. Bill passed away in late 2010 following a two year battle with Leukemia.

Naval Architect Bill Langan

Naval Architect Bill Langan

Designed for a longstanding client, this motor yacht can take her owner and eight guests to the most remote regions of the planet. Powered by two diesel engines delivering almost two thousand horsepower each, she has a top speed of 16.5 knots and a range of 1900 nautical miles. The classic and airy interior was designed by the Rhoades Young office of Lymington, England. The interior decoration and soft goods are by Candace Langan Design – also based in Newport — whose principal Candy Langan is Bill’s wife. Calliope was built at the Holland Jachtbouw shipyard, in the Netherlands. Her maiden voyage last summer to took her north to the fjords of Norway, and she can now be found cruising European waters for the summer.

Based in Newport, Rhode Island, Langan Design Partners is an internationally recognized full-service naval architecture and yacht design office with the capacity to take on all aspects of the development of luxury yachts and commercial vessels from early concept to detailed engineering, incorporating 3D modeling, interior and exterior styling, performance and sea-keeping analysis.

Holland Jachtbouw superyacht Calliope wins at World Superyacht Award

May 09, 2011

Holland Jachtbouw have announced that their most recent motor yacht launch, the 42-metre superyacht Calliope, has won the World Super Yacht Award for Best Three-deck Semi-displacement or Planing Motor Yacht. The award ceremony took place in the suitably splendid surroundings of the Guildhall in London on the evening of May 7, where the management team from Holland Jachtbouw were on hand to pick up the prestigious Neptune trophy.

“Seeing the incredibly high standard of the nominees for this award it is truly an honour for us that superyacht Calliope was chosen as winner by our industry peers,” says Tako van Ineveld, Director at Holland Jachtbouw. “The other boats in the category were all built by dedicated powerboat yards who specialise in this field. It is unique that Holland Jachtbouw, which has made its name for creating famous sail yachts like Windrose and Athos, can also win such an award for only our second motoryacht. This speaks volumes for the excellence of the yard’s building team and the way we have been able to incorporate sailing yacht standards of finish and fine detailing into the fully custom motorboat environment.”

Another major reason for the success of motor yacht Calliope is of course the exquisite design by Bill Langan, who sadly passed away just after the yacht was completed. “It was both a pleasure and a privilege to work with Bill on one of his final projects,” adds Van Ineveld. “This award is a testimony to his abiding legacy of design excellence.”

Bill Langan Yacht Designs to continue with Langan Design Partners LLC

February 11, 2011

The legacy of renowned naval architect Bill Langan (1955 -2010) will live on not only in the yachts that he designed over a career that spanned more than three decades — first as a designer with Sparkman & Stephens and then as principal of Langan Design Associates, Inc. — but also in the yachts that will be completed and conceptualized going forward by the newly formed Langan Design Partners LLC, headquartered in Newport, R.I.

Langan passed away on December 31, 2010, after a courageous two-year battle with leukemia, and it was his hope that his office continue serving current and future clients after his death. To that end, his long-time associates Thomas Degrémont, Antonio Ferrer, and Samuel Howell have formed an equal partnership that will move forward with the same vision and purpose that has been cultivated over their 32 years of combined dedication to Langan Design.

“It is an honor for our team to carry on in Bill’s name, continuing with our collective commitment to delivering exceptional designs,” said Sam Howell, explaining that while attention to style, technology and seaworthiness has been the basis of the firm’s design philosophy for 15 years, developing  personal relationships with owners has been at the core of the Langan Design approach. “Each of our designs is a true reflection of the owner’s vision, a product of an in-depth and meaningful collaboration.”

Howell added that Candace Langan, Bill’s wife and the principal of Candace Langan Interior Decoration will continue her yacht interior decoration business out of the Langan Design office in Newport.  “We work jointly on many projects, and she works closely with her clientele to create a timeless style based on individual tastes and needs, for both new construction and refit projects.”

Langan Design Partners is an internationally recognized full-service naval architecture and yacht design office with the capacity to take on all aspects of the development of luxury yachts and commercial vessels from early concept to detailed engineering, incorporating 3D modeling, interior and exterior styling, performance and sea-keeping analysis.

The Partners

Tom Degrémont (Wakefield, R.I.)—Degrémont studied naval architecture and ship design at the University of Southampton in England, earning his Masters of Engineering.

Born in Paris, he spent his childhood summers sailing and diving along the Brittany coast. His first job was as a reserve officer in the French Navy, working as a naval architect in the submarine refit design office in Toulon.

In late 1996, Degrémont’s passion for technology pushed his career in a new direction when he joined a small Internet company as a technology consultant, then became a director of product development following its acquisition by AOL.

By 2003, the urge to return to naval architecture could no longer be ignored, and it was then that Degrémont joined the Langan Design team.

While at Langan Design, Degrémont was the lead designer on a range of projects, from the 100′ steel sail training schooner Argo to the modern 83’ sailing sloop Angel. His most recent projects include the refit and extension of a 130’ A&R motor yacht and the super-structure modeling and styling of a 180’ motor yacht.

Tony Ferrer (Newport, RI)–Ferrer holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and studied at the Westlawn School of Yacht Design.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, he grew up sailing and worked at various shipyards designing and building yachts eventually leading to the formation of his own design office. In addition to having designed various racing yachts that he campaigned around the globe, Ferrer also has worked on a wide range of custom and production sailing yachts, motor yachts and commercial work boats.

Ferrer worked with Bill Langan at Sparkman & Stephens for over 10 years before moving to Newport to join Langan Design in 1988.  Some of his recent projects include the 105’ motor yacht Cassiopeia;  the 145’ motor yacht Calliope; which was recently nominated for a Neptune award; a pair of luxury custom yacht tenders; and the styling of EOS, a 310’ three-masted schooner.

Sam Howell (Middletown, R.I.)–Howell holds a diploma in Yacht Design from Southampton Institute in England as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane University (New Orleans, Louisiana).

Growing up sailing on the waters of Martha’s Vineyard (Massachusetts) sparked Howell’s interest in yachts that grew to a passion for both racing and cruising. He has an extensive sailing résumé that includes working as a professional yacht captain and crew on various racing sailboats competing in international races worldwide. He worked at Pedrick Yacht Designs for seven years, adding participation on two America’s Cup design teams to his experience.

Howell joined Langan Design when it first opened in 1997 and has since designed a wide range of custom and production sailing and motor yachts, including the 130’ classic styled ketch Victoria of Strathearn; the 78’ IMS Maxi Yacht Sagamore; the 85’ pilothouse sloop Adjutor; and the 88’ cold molded three-masted sail training vessel Spirit of Bermuda.

January 21, 2011

Calliope Yacht is a 42 metre Holland Jachtbouw superyacht with customised grace and form which was built to Lloyds and MCA regulations in Holland. She is an all-aluminium ‘gentlemen’s yacht’ with a cruising speed of around 15.5 knots as launched in 2010. Her exterior design and naval architecture as created by Bill Langan Design Associates which is a yacht design firm based in Newport, Rhode Island which specialises in designing unique yachts for special clients. Motor yacht Calliope was ordered by a repeat client and she is the second semi-displacement motor yacht commissioned by the same owners at Holland Jachtbouw. This particular yacht owner was one with yachting experience and with a very specific set of requirements in terms of customisation and quality. Indeed, the owner had no desire for compromise such as would enable taking the semi-custom or series yacht route. The yachting experience which has gone into Calliope means that she is a functional yacht which is very well suited to sue as a luxury charter yacht or as a private one.

Holland Jachtbouw Managing Director Paul Dielemans comments that: “The fact that this project will be built for an existing client is very satisfying. We are delighted when owners are so pleased with the quality and performance of their previous yacht that they choose to partner with us again. It is also a great chance for the yard to build upon an existing relationship and create a new yacht to the next level of sophistication, putting both the owner’s and our own experiences into practice.”

At just under 500 GT, the project matches Holland Jachtbouw’s preferred position in the superyacht market. “This type of fully customised powerboat puts clear water between our yard and the competition,” Dielemans continues. “Along with the recent order of the 62-metre schooner Athos, it shows that Holland Jachtbouw’s business plan is in sync with the demands of sailing and motor yacht connoisseurs alike. Moreover, our state-of-the-art new facilities will be used to the utmost efficiency when opened in September 2007.”

The first yacht owner by the owner of Calliope was the 32 metre flybridge cruiser called Cassiopeia which was launched to considerable acclaim in 2004. Both yachts are named after goddesses, with M/Y Calliope being the muse of music and epic poetry.

Timelessly stylish both inside and out, the Calliope yacht has been built and finished to a remarkable standard of quality. With her Bill Langan design, Rhoades Young interior and major input from an experienced owner, this fully customised powerboat impresses in every way.

Some of the Key Facets of Motor Yacht Calliope Include:

Relaxation and comfort :
Interior designer Rhoades Young devised an exceptionally relaxed lounge and dining area on the main deck, with a hidden sliding shoji screen to split the two spaces when intimate dining is required. Located forward, the owners’ stateroom includes a private library, full beam lounge and his & her bathrooms with dressing rooms. This splendid area is flooded with natural light and has a strong visual connection with the outside world.

Yachting Experience:
Launched in the summer of 2010, the 42-metre Calliope is an exceptional semi-displacement motor yacht. Commissioned by repeat clients, she combines all her owners’ rich cruising experiences onboard Cassiopeia with the very latest thinking in superyacht construction. Innovative demands in terms of customisation and quality included a highly specified and fully integrated bridge.

Aluminium Construction:
Calliope is an all-aluminium ‘gentlemen’s yacht’ offers comfort and style in equal measure. Calliope‘s elegant modern-classic interior is finished in weathered limed oak, which contrasts elegant classical architecture with a range of modern furniture. One of the most impressive features is the offset reverse spiral staircases, which dynamically connect all three decks. Panoramic views up through the sweeping undersides of the steps make this a striking centrepiece to the yacht and make her into an ideal charter platform.

Customisation:
Teak is the predominant word on superyacht Calliope’s bridge deck, with the sky lounge making the most of the full beam. With the large sliding doors open to the aft deck, the entire deck and saloon blend into a united ‘inside-out’ zone that is ideal for informal leisure at anchor.  Designed and built to Lloyds and MCA classification, Calliope reaffirms that Holland Jachtbouw is eminently capable of creating bespoke motoryachts of the highest calibre.

Visionary Superyacht Designer Michael William (Bill) Langan dies

January 05, 2011

Michael William (Bill) Langan, age 55, died peacefully on December 31 at the Dana-Farber/Brigham & Women’s Cancer Center after a courageous battle with leukemia.

Just two months ago, Bill was honored with the prestigious Leadership Award by the International Superyacht Society (ISS), recognized by his peers for his outstanding contributions to the standards, prestige and character of the luxury yachting industry. Although he was unable to travel to accept the award in person, he was deeply moved by this tribute.

Born in Greenwich, Connecticut on June 9, 1955 to Dr. Michael Joseph and Kathleen Holman Langan, Bill competed in most of the major ocean sailing races around the world. Starting in the sport on Long Island Sound at age 10, he was proud to have participated in 20 consecutive Newport Bermuda Races, his first at age 15, and to eventually serve as the race’s Technical Director.

Bill graduated from Greenwich High School and Webb Institute with a BS in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Following a student internship at Sparkman & Stephens, the New York-based yacht design and brokerage firm, he joined the design department there in 1978 as Chief Draftsman. Two years later, Olin Stephens named him Chief Designer, the position Olin himself held for 50 years.

Bill’s early work with S & S included project management of the 12-meter yacht Freedom that won the America’s Cup race of 1980. In preparation for the 1987 America’s Cup challenge, Bill was chosen as designer for the America II campaign sponsored by the New York Yacht Club. 1987 marked the last time 12-meter yachts would compete in the America’s Cup, and with that change Bill decided to concentrate the firm’s business on luxury sailing yachts over 75 feet. Over the course of 20 years with S & S, Bill was responsible for over 300 individual designs.

In 1994, Bill participated in the expedition, headed by former US Secretary of the Treasury William Simon that navigated the icy conditions of the Northwest Passage from Alaska to Greenland. Bill redesigned, refitted and strengthened Simon’s yacht, the 175-foot explorer yacht Itasca, to make Simon’s dream journey a reality.

In 1998, Bill fulfilled his own dream to found Langan Design Associates, Inc. of Newport, Rhode Island, and settled his family in Jamestown. With Bill at the helm, his firm completed over 40 designs, each unique, but all of them timeless in style, with attention to craftsmanship, advanced technology, and seaworthiness. His design vision was well received starting with his first design, the 130-foot ketch sailing yacht Victoria of Strathearn , that won design awards from both ShowBoats International and the ISS.

Later designs include superyacht EOS , a 305-foot 3-masted schooner, the largest private sailing yacht in the world to date. Bill encouraged his wife to start her own firm, Candace Langan Interior Decoration, specializing in yacht interiors. Their most recent collaboration, Calliope, a 42-meter motor yacht, is featured in the December issue of Yacht International.

Bill was a member of Conanicut Yacht Club in Jamestown, New York Yacht Club, and the Storm Trysail Club. He served as Chairman of the Cruising Club of America Technical Committee for over 12 years.

Bill was devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Candace Register Langan, and two children, Tom and Annie of Jamestown, RI, his parents of Greenwich, CT, six siblings and their spouses: Meg Moore (John) of Reston, VA, Ellen Langan (Steve Krafchick) of Seattle, WA, Katie Langan Santee (Kevin) of Mamaroneck, NY, Betsy Dell (Roger) of Roseville, CA, Bob Langan (Margot) of Portland, OR, and Stephen Langan (Kathy) of Bedford, NH; his mother-in-law Anne Mickle Register of Chestertown, MD, brothers-in-law Croft Register (Pam) and Fred Register (Connie), and sixteen nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 8 at 2 pm at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Jamestown, where Bill and his family are members. Following the church service, there will be a reception at the Conanicut Yacht Club.
