ISS Design Awards 2014 Finalists

October 06, 2014

Written by Zuzana Bednarova

Friday, October 3, 2014 saw the ISS (International Superyacht Society) unveil its lists of finalists for the 2014 International Design Awards. For 24 years, ISS’s Design Awards—based entirely on peer review—has celebrated the best naval architecture, design, interiors, engineering, as well as builds the large yacht industry presents annually.

Annual Awards Gala, 29 October 2014, Newly at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts

Annual Awards Gala, 29 October 2014, Newly at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts

The selection of finalists in each award grouping results from the privilege to vote that ISS membership affords. A distinguished and impartial group of judges then weighs the qualifications of each yacht with the winning yachts announced at ISS’s annual International Design Awards Gala, this year on Wednesday, 29 October 2014 from 6:30 P.M. newly at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Fort Lauderdale. The theme celebrates Tahitian Flair!

A dedicated group of volunteers from many of the industry’s finest companies work year-round on the development of the theme, enhancements to the program and to ensuring an elegant evening.

The event is made possible by the steadfast support of ISS Gala and Awards of Distinction Sponsors. This year, this exceptional group of companies includes Tahiti Tourisme and the Robb Report as Platinum sponsors; Viking Crew Management as Gold Sponsor; and, Lürssen, MTN, Oceanco, Westrec and Wright Maritime Group as Silver Sponsors.

Each year, nominees are submitted to ISS by the large yacht industry’s leading builders, designers and stewards. The categories are as follows:

Power: (3) awards for size categories 24m-40m, 40m-65m, 65m+

Sail: (2) awards for size categories 24m-40m, 40m+

Interior Design: (1) award for power or sail

Best Refit: (1) award for power or sail

ISS also recognizes achievement in the business and service of superyachts. During the Gala, ISS Awards of Distinction—Business or Business Person of the Year, Innovation, the ISS Fabien Cousteau Blue Award as well as the Leadership Award and Distinguished Crew Award—are presented.

The ISS Business (Person) of the Year is awarded to those demonstrating excellence in their area of superyacht expertise within the previous year; nominations come from both the industry and the ISS board with the board making the finalist selections.

Open to every aspect of the industry—from crew training to technological advances—the Excellence in Innovation award is given to an individual or business that has demonstrated innovation in their endeavours. Nominations come from the industry and ISS board members vote to determine finalists.

The new ISS Fabien Cousteau Blue Award, first introduced at the 2010 Awards Gala, celebrates stewardship of marine ecosystems. Environmental leadership, global oceanic conservation and resource preservation are prerequisites for nomination. The integration of environmental technologies and resource management with the goal of setting achievable standards and models for wide adaptation in the design, engineering and building of large yachts—and the use of the Earth’s waterways—are essential criteria. Nominations are made by owners and the yachting industry; selection is by panel of judges, including Mr. Cousteau.

ISS’s Leadership Award recognizes an individual or business whose distinctive work and commitment to the industry has contributed—over a substantial period of time—to the sustainable growth of the superyacht community worldwide. Nominations and selection for The Leadership Award are made by those who have received the award in previous years with the previous year’s winner presiding.

The Distinguished Crew Award is presented in years when the DCA award judges are presented with a nomination that represents the essence of the award (nominations are sought industry-wide). Specifically, these honours are designed to recognize yacht crew whose distinguished acts of service best exemplify the standards to which professional yacht crew aspire.

The International Yacht and Aviation Awards reward the best in design from across the globe.

Technical Features of luxury motor yacht Cacos V:

Superyacht Cacos V has great spaces for her category: with a 479GT volume, it boasts the record of being the 40 meters motor yacht with the biggest internal volume ever.

In order to improve visibility, the wheelhouse of luxury yacht Cacos V has sloped reverse windows (as big transatlantic) to reduce reflections and water effects on the windows and it has also wide bridge wings which protrude from the external profile of the superstructure to let, during maneuvers, maximum visibility fore and aft.

The external bulwarks are almost vertical in order to increase space and visibility; windows, instead, are very wide to allow the natural light come in.

The particular external gleanings and the shining/matt colours contrast of the hull increase the stylistic appeal.

Layout and interiors equipment have been designed by the Centro Stile of the Group according to Owner’s choices.

The main deck houses the large living and dining areas characterized by wide full height windows.

The Owner’s area is totally bow oriented with a private office, a large full beam cabin and a double bathroom.

On the lower deck, mid-ship, the 4 guest cabins can be found, while, at the bow, there is the crew area with 3 cabins.

On the upper deck there is another saloon, full beam, the wheelhouse and the Captain’s cabin.

On the sundeck there is a comfortable Spa Pool with large table and sofa chairs.

All crew members have independent transits to ensure maximum privacy to the guests on board.

Winners of the World Superyacht Awards 2014 celebrate with their Neptune trophies

The ceremony, which celebrates excellence in superyacht build and design, is the most anticipated event in the superyacht calendar. Throughout the evening, international broadcaster, Natasha Kaplinsky, presented a selection of prized awards to the owners of the finest sail and motor yachts delivered in 2013. A total of twenty-seven coveted Neptune trophies and Judges’ Commendation prizes, custom made for the occasion by Baccarat, were presented throughout the ceremony.

Motor Yacht of the Year was awarded to the 99m Madame Gu
The Motor Yacht of the Year Award honours the very best motor yacht delivered to its owners in 2013, chosen from amongst the winners of the motor yacht classes. Whilst size is not a factor in determining the victor of this award, this year the judges did select the largest yacht of those shortlisted. Built by Feadship–de Vries in Makkum, The Netherlands, with both exterior and interior design from Andrew Winch Designs, motor yacht Madame Gu is widely recognised as one of the most exquisite yachts afloat. It was not just appearance that swayed the judges; a superb quality of structural build, the design and installation of the mechanical elements and systems, and the perfection of interior joinery and decoration was absolutely beyond reproach. This resulted in a unanimous decision to name her as the highly deserved Motor Yacht of the Year.

Sailing Yacht of the Year went to 32.64m Inukshuk
After much consideration of the two sailing yacht class winners – sailing yacht Ganesha and superyacht Inukshuk – the judges voted almost unanimously to select Inukshuk, a 32.6-metre sloop built by Baltic Yachts in Finland, as the winner of this prestigious award. Their decision was largely based on recognition that this yacht provides an optimal balance between excellent sailing performance and the high degree of comfort and customisation offered to its owner. Inukshuk’s elegant looks, which feature uncluttered deck spaces derived from the drawing board of German Frers, state-of-the-art sailing systems and the high standards of construction seen both in the structure of the vessel and its interior finish by Adam Lay Studio, were all factored into the decision.

Voyager’s Award

The Voyager’s Award credits superyacht owners who have undertaken a passage of an unusual or exploratory nature. This award, determined by the jury who have all cruised the world extensively, unusually resulted in the secret ballot creating an exact tie. Rather than breaking the deadlock to determine a single winner, the judges decided to award an equal first place to two owners who have both undergone extraordinary voyages – The owners of superyacht Exuma and luxury yacht Zeepaard.

Superyacht Exuma is a 50-metre motor yacht built by Picchiotti/Perini Navi to a design by Philippe Briand of Vitruvius Yachts. At the design stage, Exuma was specifically customised for cruising the more remote areas of the Pacific and her entry, written personally by the owner, catalogues an example of this: An adventurous voyage, made between 2012 and 2013, that started in New Caledonia and Vanuatu and progressed through the Solomon Islands to Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, Palau, and Sabah ending in the Philippines. Not only was the account well written and beautifully illustrated, it also displayed an enviable depth of knowledge of, and interaction with the various populations encountered throughout the itinerary. The judges considered it to be an excellent example of a cruise that deserved recognition.

Built by JFA Yachts in France in 2003, superyacht Zeepaard is a 37-metre expedition yacht designed for adventurous voyages. Her circumnavigation between 2009 and 2013, starting and finishing in the Mediterranean, certainly qualified as such, covering a total of 50,000nm and 39 countries. While the totality of the voyage was too long a duration to qualify for the Voyager’s Award, the judges extracted a portion which fell within the two year limit specified within the rules. Even so, this was an epic cruise. As the judges were to see from a small sample of the 40,000 or so images, it was clear that the owner, along with his family and friends, encountered incredible experiences everywhere they went, even in the rather more adventurous ‘pirate zones’, for which they were well prepared. This was a notable voyage of exactly the type for which expedition yachts were designed, and the judges considered it most worthy of a Neptune.

Legacy Award

The Legacy Award was presented to Sir Donald Gosling who, with over 60 years in superyachting – and counting – is the archetypal yacht owner. His love affair with the sea began at a young age and enrolling in the Royal Navy was a logical route for his career to take. In 1953 he acquired his first yacht which was followed by an array of pre-owned and custom yachts throughout the years. In 1993, Sir Donald Gosling’s current yacht, Leander G (named after HMS Leander – Sir Donald’s Royal Navy posting), was launched and she has been a much-loved staple of the superyacht scene ever since, welcoming both charter guests and Royalty on a regular basis.

With classic and captivating external lines, unique space optimisation, charming lines, sophisticated interiors and a stunning lighting system, this is a classic design with a strong overview to the future.

The Owner asked for an elegant yacht that was modern, but not too modern, and that was not too classic but which had some really classic elements. He asked to have a really nice, big space inside, and he asked for a lot of comfort especially in the saloon, it’s an area he uses a lot for business. In response to this there is a bar in the forward corner, a really huge seating area and, perhaps crucially, there’s no noise on board.

The brief for comfort took precedence for the client over any other need. Surprisingly spacious outdoor areas for relaxing and conviviality are a main focus of the design.

The key aspects are the cosy and comfortable main saloon featuring a glamorous bar corner in backlit onyx and two modern design leather sofas and a full beam Owner’s cabin.

ADMIRAL CACOS V Yacht awarded a SHOWBOATS DESIGN AWARD 2014

March 03, 2014

Written by Eva Belanyiova

Admiral Tecnomar – Yachting Hub of The Italian Sea Group is proud to announce the latest achievement during the Show Boats Design Awards 2014, organised by Boat International Media. In the spectacular Swarovsky Crystal Worlds in Austria, the most silent yacht in the world, Admiral Cacos V yacht has received an award in the category “Exterior Design and Styling Award“.

Super Yacht CACOS V

The award has been assigned by an international jury comprised of yacht owners, senior yacht crews and acclaimed designers and stylists from within as well as outside the marine industry. The award has been received by Francesco Carbone, Vice Chairman & Sales Director.

The Chairman Giovanni Costantino commented: ” We are glad and honoured to receive this award as further recognition to the quality and to the attention to details we put in every single one of our products. Motor Yacht Cacos V perfectly embodies our vocation for excellence that distinguishes our work: it is a jewel of design and technology and we are happy that these issues have been appreciated.”

Cacos V Superyacht technical features

Superyacht Cacos V  has great spaces for her category: with a 479GT volume, it boasts the record of being the 40 meters motor yacht with the biggest internal volume ever.

In order to improve visibility, the wheelhouse of Cacos V has sloped reverse windows (as big transatlantic) to reduce reflections and water effects on the windows and it has also wide bridge wings which protrude from the external profile of the superstructure to let, during maneuvers, maximum visibility fore and aft.
