Gold for Stephens Waring’s flagship BEQUIA Yacht at Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2013

June 17, 2013

Stephens Waring Design is thrilled to report that its flagship, the 91-foot sailing yacht Bequia, has triumphed at this year’s Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, running in the beautiful Italian yacht charter location – Porto Cervo in Sardinia. This amazing event kicks off the regatta season in the Mediterranean, and a fleet of 21 vessels, including the lovely Bequia yacht, gathered at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda to test their racing mettle.

While owner Jes Staley had Stephens Waring design Bequia yacht to take his family cruising in comfort and safety, he does enjoy a good race once or twice a year. “I have learned a lot about sailing through racing. You get to really test the boat and the sails and learn how to maneuver it and make it go fast,” says Jes. But he always keeps his eye on the goal-to be sure everyone has a great time.

Among the fleet of sleek, bold Med-style boats from the tables of the likes of Tripp, Dubois, and Phillippe Starck, superyacht Bequia was a standout with her classic Spirit of Tradition lines and golden varnished teak. But she quickly disproved the notion that classic is slow, as she racked up firsts in Day One and Day Two, outpacing rivals in Class C like the Hoek-designed Truly Classic 78 yacht Drumfire and the Dubois-designed 37-meter superyacht Genevieve.

Sailing yacht Bequia

On Day Three she found herself on the wrong side of a windshift, along with the rest of her class except Genevieve, and settled for third, behind Genevieve and the Oyster 885 luxury yacht Karibu. Conditions were delightful and challenging, ranging from lighter breezes to puffs and gusts in the mid-twenties. Racing was cancelled on Day 4 due to lack of wind.

“It was a great regatta, with super boats to race against,” said Jes after collecting his trophy. “Porto Cervo is a beautiful place, and it’s also a great win for all the guys in Maine who helped build the yacht.”

Luxury yacht Bequia was built by Brooklin Boat Yard of Brooklin, Maine, and launched in 2009.

Jes and wife Debbie enjoyed the sailing and the coastline in Sardinia so much they plan a return visit later this summer with their family to enjoy some lower-key cruising. Also on the agenda is a cruise among the Greek islands before returning to the west side of the Pond in the fall. This passage will give Jes an opportunity to realize a long-held dream-making an Atlantic crossing under sail.

The brief was to create a really special yacht taking the Wally concept for outdoor living and clean, exciting design style to the next level by adding mega yacht luxury and comfort levels. The Wetzels Brown Partners strived to push boundaries, question requirements and provide a framework for a relaxed lifestyle onboard with no compromise for comfort in the detailing of the interior elements and the accessories – specially designed bed linen, fine porcelain and touch screen controls.

The interior design of the Wally 164 superyacht Better Place is based on the following key design principles, which were fundamental to the owner:

1) Modern design that works – Clean understandable routing with ease of access and flexibility of use for both guests and crew.

2) A rejuvenating on the water experience. On board one gets the feeling of being in touch with the sea (hull shape is visible throughout).

3) A light spacious feel – Uncluttered space creates a calm and relaxing heaven for the Client.

4) Use of colour – The base finishes are soft shades with unexpected splashes of colour provided by the lighting and accessories.

Bugatti blue identifies owner’s loft with raspberry red, glossy black and ice green in the guest cabins. The crew areas are finished in calming sky blue.

5) Attention to detailing – Streamlined interiors without excessive ornament or accessories. This caters to both the weight saving principles and also the philosophy for this refined state-of-the-art luxury.

The International Yacht and Aviation Awards are now closed. Voting will commence on Monday 11 March.

RORC Caribbean 600 Yacht Race: US Entries

January 31, 2013

The Royal Ocean Racing Club’s 5th edition of CARIBBEAN 600 yacht race will kick off from a popular Caribbean yacht charter destination – Antigua on 18th February. There will be several American competitors and boats participating this year. The Race has now become a classic offshore competition, with a total number of 47 entries having signed up this year, while the 2012 edition attracted 39 entries. The yachts range from 203ft superyacht Athos to 39ft sailing yacht Sleeper.

American entries include: Privateer, Bella Mente, Locura, Blackbird, Hound, Lilla, Triple Lindy, Phaedo, Slim

PRIVATEER, Cookson 50, Ron O’Hanley (USA)

Ron O’Hanley’s American Cookson 50 yacht Privateer is back for a third attempt to win the RORC Caribbean 600 Trophy. Privateer came third overall in 2010 and had a fantastic race last year before a 10% penalty put them out of the running for the overall title. O’Hanley’s crew will consider this year’s race as unfinished business and charter yacht ICAP Leopard could face stiff competition for class honours.

Ron O’Hanley is President of Fidelity’s Investments Asset Management and Corporate Services divisions and has successfully campaigned his Cookson 50 yacht Privateer in the Caribbean and in/around Newport, New York Yacht Club Races etc. He’s on the Board of Sail Newport and IYRS (International yacht Restoration School in Newport, Rhode Island). Brad Read, Head of Sail Newport will also be onboard for the race. Sailed to Antigua from Florida (1200 nm) took 5 days. Been racing offshore around the waters of the Caribbean this year. 13 crew mainly from USA with one Aussie and NZ on board. Ron has been racing for many years in Antigua.

BELLA MENTE, Judel/Vrolijk 72 Custom,
Owner/Helm: Hap Fauth (Minneapolis, Minn./Naples, Fla, USA)

American Mini Maxi yacht Bella Mente can be considered a favourite for the overall Caribbean 600 Trophy.

When owner Hap Fauth is not competing on the water, he runs a number of businesses that span many industries from agriculture to aerospace. He brings many of the same principles and tactics that he uses in the boardroom to the development of his sailing campaign. This is the third boat under the Bella Mente name that Fauth has owned and raced.

Launched in Spring 2012, luxury yacht Bella Mente is a 72-foot Mini Maxi designed by judel/vrolijk: “It is a great opportunity to put the crew together in conditions conducive to crew distance training. We’ll have an opportunity to test some new sail work and crew co-ordination. Since we have never sailed this race, I am optimistic on podium results,” comments Rob Oullette, Racing Manager.

In 2013, their race calendar includes the Rolex Fastnet Race and the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race but this is the only race they will enter in the Caribbean. A crew of 20 top sailors includes: Mike Sanderson (NZL), Ian Moore (GBR), Michele “Mickey” Cannoni (Bowman) and numerous other America’s Cup, Volvo Ocean Race and Olympic sailors.

PERUVIAN OWNER WITH CALIFORNIAN TRANSPAC CREW ON PERFORMANCE CRUISER
LOCURA, Nelson/Marek 92 Custom, Hector Velarde, PERU/USA

Locura yacht’s Peruvian owner, Hector Velarde is a member of Waikiki Yacht Club and the home port for the Locura superyacht is Lima, Peru. He purchased the yacht in 2012 and his crew are made up of amateur and ‘pro’ sailors from Southern California and include: Sailing Master Tom Corkett (Newport Beach, CA), Joe Lacey and William (Tad) Palmer III as navigator, 13 crew in total.

Luxury yacht Locura has cruised the Pacific, Tahiti and Mexico. The 2012 Antigua Sailing Week was Locura’s debut into racing in a regatta and she took a 2nd place in her division. Hector’s previous yacht raced in two Transpac Races from California to Hawaii and he’s bringing back the same crew to race in his first Caribbean 600.

“We signed up because of the course and the competition it offers, along with ideal sailing conditions. We are looking forward to the challenge and excitement of competing against world class boats and sailors from around the world,” Hector Velarde.

West Coast US: The boat captain, Tom Corkett is based in Newport Beach, California but the boat has a home port in Lima, Peru.

Family run and raced boat
HOUND, Nielsen 59 Custom, Frank Eberhart, (USA, Maine)

The 60-foot classic yacht Hound will be competing in the Caribbean 600 for the second time with a family crew. Hound has competed in the last 8 Newport-Bermuda races, winning her class twice.

Over the years the owners have used the boat to cross oceans with their four children, cruised the Baltic and competed in many races. The boat is a regular of the Caribbean, having sailed the area for the past 26 winters. In the summer months Hound can be found sailing the coast of Maine and points north, enjoying the Canadian Maritimes and her homeport in Penobscot Bay, the Island of Vinalhaven. Hound is a family run and raced boat.

Frank Eberhart
: “Hound has been sailing the Caribbean for nearly 30 years. This race is a unique opportunity to enjoy Caribbean sailing with a twist, while experiencing the beauty of the Leeward chain. This race is a fun addition to the boats racing resume.”

MULTINATIONAL CREW – SECOND C600
LILLA, C.N.B Briand 76, Simon & Nancy De Pietro (IRL)

Nancy De Pietro: “Team LILLA is a multi-national group of friends and family who love racing together. We have competed in 6 offshore races to date including Overall Winner in the 2011 Marion-Bermuda Race (current record holder) and Overall Winner Cruising Division in the 2012 Newport-Bermuda Race. This will be our 3rd RORC Caribbean 600. We hope to improve our performance and step-up to the challenge of a very competitive IRC Fleet. The challenging Caribbean course with All-Star Cast is irresistible racing.”

15 multinational crew members from UK, USA, South Africa, Canada, France. The core of the team is husband and wife owners, Simon & Nancy De Pietro, with friend Ian Martin who is LILLA’s Captain when Simon is off working. Simon makes a living developing wind and tidal energy projects and enjoys escaping to sail LILLA. Nancy manages the sailing/racing program and gets out on the water whenever possible.

Ian was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa winning a National Title for small keel boats at age 18. He went on to develop a very strong racing background including the Whitbread Round the World, Bermuda-Plymouth Race, double handed Plymouth-Newport, Fastnet, Newport-Bermuda, Marion-Bermuda, etc. The Caribbean has been Ian’s home for twenty years and he is no stranger to Antigua Race Week or the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta.

From this background, Ian assembled a very talented team starting with son Jake Martin and fellow Caribbean sailors D. Randy West, Colin Campbell, Guillaume Bihet, Katherine Bieber, and Simon Spencer.  He also calls on childhood friend Andy Schwartzkopff who brings fellow Connecticut racers Mike Lebov, Bruce Kuryla (U.S. Offshore Champion), and Bruce Galaski. When available, we are lucky to include Ian’s brother John Martin on the helm (competed in 2 BOC single handed Round the World Races).

New to Team LILLA for the 2013 Caribbean 600 will be husband and wife Sophie and Petro Jonker who live and work in St. Maarten running a day charter business on “Quality Time”.  Last but not least we add avid sailor/racer/helmsman Jim Barnes who normally competes against team LILLA offshore and last year on Buzzard’s Bay during the Ensign Regional and Mattapoisett Yacht Club summer series. Will go on to do the Rolex Fastnet and Middle Sea Race later this year.

PHAEDO AND SLIM

There will be two Gunboat 66’s on the start line of the 2013 RORC Caribbean 600 in Antigua on Monday 18th February. For Andrew Hearst’s Slim, this will be her maiden race before continuing a slow cruise around the world, but Lloyd Thornburg’s Phaedo yacht has a secret weapon on board in the form of racing legend, Brian Thompson. This will be their second race.

The boat left Cape Town on the 18th November ’12 and will be in the Caribbean for the winter season. Skipper, Travis McGarry says: “We are on a slow circumnavigation as we peel the miles away in comfortable speed exploring what the globe has to offer. We’ve set Slim up for both Tropical and High/Low latitude sailing.”

Travis McGarry is an Ultra Marathon runner and Triathlete that loves to sail: “For Slim’s maiden regatta we chose the RORC Caribbean 600 as we wanted a race where a bunch of friends could go out and have fun on the open ocean and enjoy what these magnificent boats do best. The Caribbean 600 met our needs perfectly. We are a group of friends crewing together to enjoy ourselves over the 600nm, while pushing the boat a little. We wanted and race that offered speed, tactics, open ocean and fits into busy work schedules. We couldn’t have picked a better suited regatta.”

Images of the world’s largest carbon fibre sloop BETTER PLACE – the first Green Star sailing yacht

November 30, 2012

The largest carbon fibre built sloop BETTER PLACE is a beautiful Bugatti blue coloured 50-metre vessel and the first RINA Green Star sailing yacht in the world. Constructed at WallyEurope facility, utilising cutting-edge technology, superyacht Better Place was launched in May, 2012 and yachting enthusiast had a chance to admire her at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show. This sophisticated craft features exterior by Tripp Design and spectacular interior by Wetzels Brown Partners.

As described by Wally Founder and President Luca Bassani Antivari, Better Place is an “environmentally friendly and breakthrough Wally 50m with aggressive and sleek lines of a true performance sailing yacht, rather than the motor sailer look typical of this class of yachts.”

“Better Place introduces innovative concepts in the round-the-world mega yacht cruisers“ continues Bassani “such as big volumes associated with ultra light displacement, latest diesel electric propulsion system, staysail simplified system, deckhouse with full height windows, uniquely large open-air living areas, raised bulwark, aft owner’s suite with portholes and hatches on four sides and direct access to the Terrace-on-the-sea. “

She is also the first sailing yacht ever created to comply with the environmental requirements of the RINA Green Star Design additional class notation, reserved to the ships designed, built and operated in such way as to ensure maximum respect for the environment.

The measured displacement of this mega sailer perfectly matches the theoretical data: only 250 tons, of which 88 of the ballast (fin and bulb keel) and 11.5 of the full rigging (mast, boom, PBO rigging). The Wally 50m resulted also in perfect trim.

“This result reflects WallyEurope’s excellent building quality carried out throughout all the construction, using the latest advanced composite technology” confirms Luca Bassani.

Better Place yacht’s displacement and sail area ratio provides for and excellent performance also in light airs, under 10 knots of wind. Her Wally lifting keel, increasing the draft from 4.6 to 6.5 metres, further improves her performance, that are associated with the proven Wally easy-sailing system to produce a true Fast and Easy mega yacht.

Along with the in-furling boom, self-tacking jib, Magic Trim for the main sheet, captive winch for the jib sheet , and push button controls, the Wally easy-sailing features of the Wally 50m include the new staysail system, specifically developed by the R&D for this mega yacht: the furling staysail with no-torsion luff cable is always ready to be easily and quickly hoisted from its 8.6-m long dedicated locker in the forward deck.

The unique environmental characteristics of Better Place go even further than those required by the RINA Green Star Classification: she is the first sailing yacht equipped with the latest diesel electric propulsion technology, to increase power efficiency and reduce consumption, noise and vibration, as well as the ordinary maintenance of the propulsion system.

The 705kW power is produced by three generators, offering the opportunity to convert some hydraulic services into electrical ones thanks to the very powerful energy source, such as the inner stay furler, and the sheet tensioning devices.

Developed on the lines of Tripp Design with the interiors by Wetzels Brown Partners, the overall design, interior and exterior, is astonishing and innovative compared to any other similar yacht.

The exterior and interiors are developed following the Wally concept of inside-outside living areas, whereas the interiors open onto the exteriors and vice versa. Introduced in yacht design by Wally in 1998 with the sailing cruiser Tiketitan, this concept has been constantly developed by the Monegasque brand pioneering also the glass deckhouses and the deck skylights.

The 62-sqm owners’ suite is aft with extraordinary visibility and brightness. The natural light floods in from four sides of the vast stateroom: through the portholes on both sides, and the mirrored glass aft and above. The owners’ private area has direct access to the 30-sqm Terrace-on-the-sea, that is another distinctive feature of the Wally inside-outside concept.

Beyond this, the forward deck features a Jacuzzi, finished in black, which is positioned beneath deck level and is therefore invisible when not in use, an hidden winch “cockpit” for the halyards, two large tender garages, stay-sail locker, sail lockers, and the Wally submarine anchor locker.

A particularly innovative service feature is the open food lift connecting galley, interior dining area and sundeck– a ‘suitcase’ suspended in free space, connected by a single vertical track, to lift . The sundeck dining can be converted into a huge sunbed with the addition of an inflatable mattress, providing further comfort without stretching available storage capacity.

A hull side door is located amidships to starboard: when open, it converts into a swimming and tender boarding platform.

Maximising space and minimising storage requirements, a newly designed seating module has been developed for the deck in carbon and mesh with low profile cushions, for easy stowage, by the interior designers Wetzels Brown Partners, who designed all the deck furnishing.

The interior design combines carbon look both gloss and satin, satin white lacquered oak, grey leather and colour matched upholstery to create a relaxed feeling. Colour-changing LED lights are used throughout the yacht and can be adjusted in order to change the atmosphere, reflecting the interior design concept to have soft and neutral tones that are coloured by the lights. The cabins are linked by a light installation, running along the spine of the yacht.

Following structural work carried out in Palma that had brought serious problems and almost resulted in the owner, Martyn Meade of investment company Hadleigh Partners, writing the yacht off, the 32-metre sailing yacht Lunar Mist arrived at Solent Refit. Solent Refit’s project manager, Phil Millard, worked closely with the owner to resolve the structural issues as well as presented a programme for an intensive refit to bring the Lunar Mist superyacht back to A1 condition.

Designed by Bill Tripp and built by Windship Trident in the United States, luxury yacht Lunar Mist has been at Solent Refit for 12 months, completing a comprehensive engineering and internal refit, rig overhaul and a high-quality hull respray. She is now ready to be moved on the transverse rail system to the horizontal slipway, where she will be slipped and the mast will be re-stepped.

After a series of sail trials in the Solent, the project will be signed off and the Lunar Mist yacht will start her new world cruising programme.

Wally, a leading builder of innovative state-of-the-art sail and power yachts, has successfully launched the stunning Bugatti blue colored 50-meter superyacht Better Place, the world’s largest sloop in carbon fiber, developed on the lines of Tripp Design with the interiors by Wetzels Brown Partners, and mast and boom by Hall Spars.

This Hall Spars Rig (mast and boom) weighs 8,500 pounds (just over 4 tons). The four spreader mast is a custom design by Hall’s in-house engineering team, tailored to meet Wally’s criteria for high performance combined with high style and built to handle “some pretty ridiculous loads.”  The Hall designed mast collar with turning bocks is a signature on Wally masts. The Hall Spars Oceanfurl boom is a premium carbon fiber in-boom furling system.

During the Monaco Yacht Show, Hall Spars & Rigging team will be situated at QS32 in the Darse Sud Tent.
