Benetti named world leader in the build of custom superyachts over 24m by Showboats International

February 27, 2011

For the seventh year in a row, Showboats International, the prestigious journal that hosts the Global Order Book, has named Benetti world leader in the construction of custom yachts over 80 feet (24 meters) in length.

The Italian brand – producer of the Class range of composite megayachts (93 to 164 feet) and the Custom range of steel and aluminium megayachts (over 45 meters) – climbs onto the podium, first among the world’s top 20 builders of custom megayachts. Indeed, with 30 projects currently underway, the company has confirmed its leading role on all international reference markets.

Additional confirmation comes from Miami where the judges of the prestigious Nautical Design Award for Italian nautical excellence – jointly organized by Yacht & Sail and ADI, the Industrial Design Association – bestowed recognition on the Azimut Magellano Collection.

The award ceremony, held at the recently concluded Miami International Boat Show, saw the Magellano Collection assert itself for its extraordinary eco-compatibility. Just one year after the launch of the Magellano 74, progenitor of the line, the Magellano 50 has distinguished itself in its market sector for its “green” properties. This eco-friendly yacht boasts a perfect blend of materials used and low environmental impact solutions; moreover the design facilitates the use of the Easy Hybrid drive system, an exclusive Azimut-Benetti R&D project that enables cruise speeds of up to 8 knots using electric motors, the utmost in silence and simplicity.

The recognition achieved by the Magellano Collection underscores the great innovative skill, design expertise and productive capacity that have set Azimut-Benetti at the forefront of the world nautical industry.

Azimut-Benetti is the leading and most prestigious builder of megayachts in the world. The Group, which owns the prestigious Azimut Yachts, Benetti and Atlantis brands, each geared to a specific segment of the nautical market – and Fraser Yachts, a brand leader in the services sector – operates in 68 countries throughout the world via a sales network comprising 138 sites.

Azimut Benetti Group: Yachts, Megayachts and Yachtique

February 17, 2011

The Italian company looks to maintain its leading international position with a new strategy brought about by changing market conditions.

In the wake of profound changes in the boating industry triggered by events two years ago, the Azimut Benetti Group has developed advanced organisational solutions following a business model which put the client and his expectations in the center of the process.

Azimut Benetti Group Yachts, Megayachts and Yachtique - Azimut Viareggio

The new organisation calls for activities to be divided into three main lines of business: YACHTS (boats up to 30 metres), MEGAYACHTS (boats over 30 metres), and YACHTIQUE (strategic services for the owner).

This represents a further focus on client expectations, which began some time ago inside Azimut, starting with products divided into collections having very precise and specific features, which will constitute a unique competitive advantage over other yacht builders.

The YACHTS business line will be under Paolo Casani who began his career with the company in 2008 directing successfully the Yachtique Division dedicated to strategic services. He has twenty-five years experience in the fashion industry and luxury goods sector with companies such as Armani, Valentino, Calvin Klein and Ferragamo.

The manager is now set to provide a significant boost to the market of the yachts up to 30 metres, as well as to the elements of innovation and technological research that have always been the hallmark of the Group’s boats in this segment – a strong, client-oriented vision. Through enhancement of the dealer network by providing dealers with a portfolio of unique services – ranging from technical matters and crew management to financial services – owners will be able to benefit, as before, from an outstanding product, but augmented now by even greater support.

The Megayacht area will be headed by Vincenzo Poerio, long-time manager of the Company, CEO of Benetti for the past 18 years. In this area the main change concern the Azimut Grande Collection, the range of planning boats over 30 meters with a wider possibility of customization. In order to reinforce the tailor-made approach that typifies boats of this size, the Azimut Grande Collection will apply the business model already in use at Benetti (Italian-style relationship management and custom solutions).

The Azimut Grande Collection will benefit of technological solutions, components, and building techniques (from floating floor-board to sound-proofing and air-conditioning systems to personal design equipment, etc.) that are capable of giving customers the highest level of comfort in pure Benetti style.

While still maintaining the distinctive spirit of each of the Group’s three brands (Azimut Yachts, Atlantis, and Benetti), this new organisation gives full expression to the Company’s  desire to continue to keep its leading position in all key markets, as strengthened by its track record of financial stability, base of an unrivalled leadership.

In fact the Azimut Benetti Group is the first yacht importer in the US, important reference market for the Group, and it is also the leader in emerging markets: this is demonstrated by the success collected in China, as recently highlighted in the latest number of China Boating, the most authoritative Chinese nautical magazine, defining Azimut as the first player of the country. Lastly the creation of an important nautical pole in Brazil, opened last June 2010, which, once at full capacity, will be the biggest covered yard at worldwide level.

Azimut-Benetti Yachts’ success in China

February 07, 2011

One of world’s best luxury yacht builders, Azimut-Benetti Group, shows great success, as one of the leaders of the Eastern markets, with China on top. During the first four months of the current nautical year, 12 Azimut Yachts boats from 12 to 35 metres have been sold in China.

Azimut 105 Super Yacht

The current orders portfolio includes prestigious models such as the new motor yacht Azimut 88 (a lucky number in China) and an Azimut Grande 116 motor yacht, flagship of the Italian shipyard: the latter will be one of the largest planning yachts ever sold to a Chinese shipowner.

The popularity of the boats proposed by the Group in China has been recently highlighted in the latest number of China Boating, the most authoritative nautical magazine in China: its list of the top 30 luxury yachts comprises 10 boats by Azimut Yachts, defined as the top player in the country. In fact, the orders recorded in Asia during the last 5 months are equivalent to 96% of the total turnover for the previous season with a 200% growth forecast for the current year.

Confirming the success of the Group in China, on 11th January Hurun Report, the exclusive Chinese magazine for High Net Worth Individuals, named Azimut Yachts as the best brand in the luxury nautical sector due to its ability to express the best of Italian style, the excellent performance of its boats and its efficient after-sales service reserved for its shipowners.

Azimut 88 motoryacht - cockpit

The award, which saw the Italian brand alongside examples of international excellence such as Cartier, Louis Vuitton and Rolls Royce, confirms the popularity of Azimut Yachts with the Chinese clientele right from the company’s debut in China.

Only a month before the award, an important yacht in the Azimut Grande Collection, an Azimut 105 motoryacht, had been delivered to the most prestigious construction development company in China to mark the opening of a new 6-star hotel in Sanya, the best-known tourist resort in the country on the island of Hainan.

Benetti has also significantly strengthened its presence in Asia to better serve the local clientele which is growing from year to year: in fact 3 Benetti megayachts have been sold recently, two 55-metre steel boats and one 93-footer in the new Benetti Class Range.

In addition, on the occasion of the Hainan Rendez-Vous, the most important Luxury Boat Show in the Far East, scheduled to be held from 2nd to 4th April, the super yacht Delfino 93′, a Benetti of new generation, will be presented for the first time in China.

“These results are the fruit of the Group’s commitment in Asia and in China in particular via direct presence on the ground, an office in Shanghai and the strongest and most expert network of dealers (five) designed to cover a market with obvious potential” says Sebastiano Fanizza, Asia Pacific Area Manager for Azimut Yachts, who continues: “The significant investments made in China, especially in the areas of marketing and service, have been tailored to the culture of these markets where differences can become advantages if they are understood and appreciated.”

New Concept Launches Anticipated at Abu Dhabi Yacht Show 2011.

January 27, 2011

Big-name players rally to region’s only superyacht show and confirm its growing reputation as prime business generator.

Some of the global superyacht industry’s most important players have signed up for the 3rd edition of the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show (ADYS) – the region’s only exhibition exclusively dedicated to the superyacht industry –  and are predicting exciting new sales opportunities, concept launches and regional premieres for the event.

Andy Treadwell, Managing Director of Informa Yacht Group (IYG), the show organisers, says the focused platform that ADYS offers industry stakeholders looking at the bigger end of the superyacht scale is unmatched in this region, a fact recognised by some of its most respected business leaders.

Abu Dhabi MAR Stand

Abu Dhabi MAR Stand

“The exhibitor line-up includes some of the biggest names in the international superyacht business including OceancoLurssen, Westport, San Lorenzo, Abu Dhabi MAR, NobiskrugCMN Yachts, YCO, Burgess, Edmiston, Azimut, Benetti, and Numarine, as well as regional stalwarts such as Gulf Craft, Art Marine and Behne MAR,” said Treadwell. “Negotiations continue with many more market-leading companies, and details of the yachts expected at Yas Marina for the show will be released shortly.”

Last year’s show witnessed a number of high-profile concept debuts, including the ES117 – the first of three megayachts to be built by luxury yacht builder Oceanco under the Weyves Couture concept. The 2010 launch of the ES117, designed in collaboration with the Middle East’s reigning fashion mogul Elie Saab, sparked a huge wave of industry, media and buyer interest, and Oceanco is keen to ride this wave with two new superyacht concept launches during ADYS 2011.

According to Marcel Okenhout, CEO, Oceanco, the two concept yachts due to be unveiled at ADYS 2011 feature individual collaborations with leading designers. Further details will be revealed during the show, although Oceanco believes the project is already stirring plenty of interest. “We found strong interest from buyers from all over the world when we showcased the ES117 concept at ADYS last year and we anticipate a similar response to this year’s launches,” said Okenhout.

Okenhout confirms that the Middle East, in part, continues to represent a major market for the superyacht industry. Middle Eastern residents currently account for around 30 per cent of the world’s superyacht owners and some of the largest new builds delivered in recent years have found their way to this region.  “This market is set to become even more important with the heavy investment in marina development, leisure yachting facilities and associated support infrastructure that it has witnessed in recent years, particular among the Gulf countries. As a global brand, Oceanco sees ADYS as a strategic opportunity to promote our yachts to a high-net-worth client base whose cultural aspirations and sensibilities represent the ideal luxury superyacht buyer,” Okenhout continued.

Oceanco also revealed that a Middle East presence supports its future aspirations to build more yachts in the 100-metre range. “Oceanco will be breaking ground on land adjacent to our current facility in The Netherlands for a planned 165m long x 52m wide x 32m high dry dock construction hall. This extended facility marks the next step in Oceanco’s advance into the 100m+ market,” Okenhout added.

Treadwell added, “This year’s show will offer an unparalleled platform for high-level networking and real business opportunities for yacht builders, brokers, and suppliers, as well as for charter brokers, interior design firms, marina developers and private owners – the entire gamut of players having a stake in the global superyacht industry.”

The inaugural edition of ADYS, in March 2009, spurred negotiations on the sale of the 73.2m superyacht MY Rabdan (formerly Silver) which were successfully closed shortly after at an asking price of AED 294 million (US $80.5 million). Last year, ADYS saw the sale of the impressive 85m Superyacht Moonlight II ex Alysia ranked among the world’s 100 largest yachts, for AED 387 million (US $106 million) through a lead established at the event. A new Westport build valued at AED40 million (US $11 million) was likewise sold to a Middle East client – proving the show’s established reputation for providing access to serious buyers.

ADYS is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and is sponsored by Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA).

This year’s edition, to be held March 24 – 26 at Yas Marina, will be co-located and jointly promoted with the season opener of the FIA GT1 World Championship 2011 – one of the most glamorous events on the motor racing calendar. Show timings are 3pm – to 9pm daily. Guests planning to visit the event are encouraged to pre-register by visiting the show’s website.

Abu Dhabi Yacht Show

The launch of the superyacht-centric Abu Dhabi Yacht Show in 2009, driven by Abu Dhabi’s ambitions to become one of the world’s leading marine leisure and yachting centres, has without doubt provided an international focus on the large yacht business in the Middle East

  • 140 exhibitors from over 30 countries
  • 31 Superyachts from 25m to 100m

Benetti CRYSTAL 140’ Motor Yacht Johanna completes Sea Trials

January 22, 2011

The Crystal 140’ motor yacht Johanna by Benetti Yachts underwent sea trials on 20 January in Viareggio. Excellent weather conditions accompanied the latest model of the successful Benetti Class range as she set out to sea on her trial run.

Once a safe distance was reached outside the port of Viareggio, the usual procedure began for the manoeuvrability and performance tests. Exceptional results were achieved by the Crystal 140’ motor yacht Johanna at the end of a full day’s programme, meeting the expectations of Benetti, the designers, the captain and the owner’s representative on board.

Motor yacht Johanna a Crystal 140’ displayed optimal performance, reaching a maximum speed of 16 knots, thanks to its two CAT C32 Acert engines at 1081 kW. The sea trials are scheduled to be completed in the coming days, for the new model to be delivered to her owner in February. The ergonomic and functional layout of the helm station was designed purposely by Benetti, so as to accommodate the highly technological and compact Integrated Bridge System, developed in house and tested during the trials.

Benetti Crystal 140’ was launched in December 2010 in Viareggio at the Lusben shipyard, owned by Azimut-Benetti.

The launching of the first model of Benetti’s new Crystal 140′ displacement range was another important milestone for the Italian brand Benetti, a world leader in the construction of custom and semi-custom mega yachts. The internal décor of the Motor yacht Crystal 140′ designed by Francois Zuretti together with the owners and their architect, is a personal interpretation of the classic style, evoking the atmospheres and elegance of the Caribbean. The external lines draw large openings on the profile to let in the daylight and illuminate the interiors.

Azimut Yachts and Atlantis at the Boat Show in Düsseldorf 2011

January 21, 2011

The Azimut Benetti Group will be exhibiting two innovative and important boats at Boot in Düsseldorf. Azimut Magellano 50 yacht launched only a few months ago is a boat that fully meets the environmental compatibility, safety and comfort requirements of the northern European market. Atlantis 44 is a step ahead in style and functionality in the sector of open habitable yachts.

At Boot in Düsseldorf, the huge industrial capability of a strong group like Azimut Benetti is reflected in two big innovative projects. Motor yacht Azimut Magellano 50 and Atlantis 44. These are both the result of the desire to market products that go beyond the existing boats, and satisfy the need to experience the sea in a new way where the passion for sailing feeds on a complete dialogue with the elements, and respect for the elements themselves.

The Magellano motor yacht range offers the market a new type of boat: the name of the great Portuguese navigator Fernäo de Magalhäes, the first to organise an expedition that sailed around the globe, was not chosen by accident. It represents the desire to propose boats able to sail in all conditions and also respect for the sea, fully meeting the new environmental compatibility requirements expressed by an increasingly mature clientele. The Magellano range is one of the four Azimut collections. The historic range consists of the flybridge motoryachts dedicated to the most combative market sector, reflecting the needs of those who are looking for boats that offer maximum cruising comfort, a range that begins with a 38 foot model with incredible habitability and offers many models up to thirty metres. The S sporting collection combines agility, performance and comfort, under the banner of innovation: Azimut 68S was the first mass-produced boat with large side windows, a solution that was immediately popular. Lastly, Azimut Grande, a collection of boats over thirty metres, with a renewed vocation in terms of customisation, catering for the ideas of the ship owners.

Azimut Magellano 50 was previewed during the Genoa Boat Show, and follows the first model in the range, Azimut Magellano 74, marking the company’s initial voyage into the world market geared to the new classic style. The Magellano yachts are the result of lengthy research which has explored new solutions in every fundamental aspect of the boat: hull, propulsion and interiors. In Azimut Magellano 50 the hull is the work of the American specialist Bill Dixon, with a special design which enables it to sail in dual mode: at low speed in displacement or at 24 knots in planning. The external look and the layout of the interiors are the work of Cor D Rover, and for the first time on a boat of this size four versions are available. All have an owner’s cabin in the centre of the boat and a VIP cabin; each cabin has its own bathroom and there can be a further cabin with overlapping berths and a sofa and/or study area in the central zone of the lower deck. The interior design is the work of the Azimut Style Department. The Azimut R&D Department has worked to develop a new hybrid propulsion available as an option alongside the latest generation common rail diesel engines – two 425 mHp Cummins engines with V-Drive transmission providing a maximum speed of 22 knots. The new hybrid propulsion features two 20kW electric engines making it possible to sail up to a speed of 8 knots relying on the batteries only, with an operating range of 8 miles with standard number of batteries (which can be doubled), or on the main generator, an option which greatly reduces fuel consumption (operating range of over 1000 miles) and raises the level of comfort, drastically reducing noise and vibrations. The system is called Easy Hybrid Plus and by means of the electronic control it is possible to switch automatically from electric to traditional operation by simply shifting the engine levers.

Magellano 50 is EC class A approved and can therefore sail in any sea condition, it holds the Rina Green Plus certification (first yacht in the world under 50 feet to obtain it), and the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification which certifies that the wood used comes from sustainable forests; the infusion lamination of the hull is carried out at the Azimut premises in Avigliana which have obtained ISO 14001 Environment certification.

As Paolo Vitelli, chairman of the Azimut Benetti Group says: “Magellano 50 is the result of years of experience and the commitment to propose a totally innovative project in which we explore the option of electric propulsion and a whole range of new solutions. For us it is a goal in the name of compatibility. It is important to point out, however, that at Azimut Benetti we believe that if you want to be serious about reducing environmental impact, you must work on general efficiency and therefore above all reduction in consumption obtained also with traditional technologies. On a large part of our range we fit low emission engines which comply with the most stringent standards comparable with Euro5 in motor vehicles, generators with fume purification and increasingly sophisticated black water systems. We have begun to propose natural fabrics and FSC certified wood processed with low pollution treatments in addition to synthetic materials which partly replace them”.

Atlantis 44 Motor yacht - Credit Azimut

Atlantis 44 Motor yacht - Credit Azimut

Atlantis 44, also new this year, stems from the desire to renew the brand range with an ambitious and specific objective: achieve the best possible blend of sporting elegance and usability, offering maximum comfort for life in the open To help attain this goal, which involves both style and space, the group enlisted the cooperation of Filippo Salvetti and Marco Biaggi, who worked within Officina Italiana Design and founded Neo Design and collaborate with the shipyard’s Technical Department. Atlantis 44 and its big brother Atlantis 48, part of the same design philosophy, have become a manifesto of this new direction: products which communicate their values and contents without intermediation, in the simplest language – the language of the sea.

The main deck is a living area characterised by great continuity thanks to the one single level, which comprises three large sunpads, a dinette and galley area. It is protected by a hard top made of soft material selected for its lightweight characteristics and simplicity, ensuring freedom and safety for on-board passenger movement.

Below deck there are two double cabins and two bathrooms, with the owner’s cabin in the centre of the boat where it enjoys all the light and the views from the two side hull windows, and the VIP cabin at the bow.

In Dusseldorf Atlantis is exhibited with Volvo Penta D6 370 engines which drive it at a maximum speed of 34 knots. It is equipped with joystick for manoeuvring and Sky Hook system which enables it to maintain its position at a standstill without any intervention on the part of the helmsman.

Azimut Magellano 50 and Atlantis 44 are finalists in the BRANCHENTREFF 2011 –European Yacht of the Year-European Powerboat of the Year, awarded to six different categories by eight important European trade magazines. The Azimut Yachts dealer for Germany is Boote Feichtner (www.bootefeichtner.at) with head office in Linz and Latisana.  Atlantis sales network on www.atlantisyachts.it.

Boot in Düsseldorf is a world reference point and is particularly important for the northern European market. This year it will be held from 22nd to 30th January at the Düsseldorf exhibition centre. The Azimut Benetti group stand is in Hall 6, the most recent hall, dedicated to large boats, position 6E42.

51m Brigantino S. Giorgio an historic Benetti Sailing Ship

January 15, 2011

The Brigantino S. Giorgio an historic Benetti Sailing Ship measures 51 metres and was built entirely in wood in 1921 at the Benetti shipyard in Viareggio. At the time, she was the largest brigantine on the Mediterranean. Every visitor who has entered the halls of the Science and Technology Museum in Milan over the past forty years has been amazed to see the huge Ebe ship, a historic Benetti sailing ship which represents a piece of history of Italian shipyards.

51m Brigantino S. Giorgio an historic Benetti Sailing Ship

51m Brigantino S. Giorgio an historic Benetti Sailing Ship

Lodged in the suggestive Naval-Air pavilion since 1964, it represents one of the main pillars of the “Leonardo da Vinci” Museum for a great number of guests who can admire its beauty.

Brigantino S. Giorgio 51 metres long, built entirely in wood in 1921 at the Benetti Shipyard in Viareggio was the largest brigantine on the Mediterranean at the time. It reached Milan after having transported goods for decades on the Mediterranean Sea. When the 2nd World War broke out, it was commandeered by the Italian Navy, and in 1952 it became a school-ship for coxswain cadets of the Navy, taking on the name of Ebe School ship. On this occasion, the old hold was restructured and turned into a room for the new auxiliary engine.

The ship was disarmed in 1958 in La Spezia and then divided into 90 pieces and transported to the Science Museum in Milan, needing 25 lorries. Here it was put back together and put on display at the Naval-Air Pavilion.  It is one of the largest sailing ships preserved inside of a museum.
