72m Benetti-Nauta motor yacht EDGE for Benetti Design Innovation Project

August 09, 2013

The 2012 edition of the Monaco Yacht Show saw the respected Benetti shipyard, part of Italy’s Azimut-Benetti Group, presents its Design Innovation Projects which includes news concepts for Benetti’s custom yachts, ranging from 50 to 90 metres plus (164′ – 295′). One of the exciting new concepts is the 72m Benetti-Nauta motor yacht EDGE 72, with interior styling by Standby/Marijana Radovic. Superyacht EDGE 72 by Nauta Yachts represents a sleek, proportioned, balanced volumes in the Nauta “light” vision, to reinterpret a 140-year history of the Italian shipyard.

Benetti Design Innovation Project

The Benetti Design Innovation project, approached the best yacht designers in the world to gauge their interest in working together. Benetti left styling and interior arrangements up to each creative team to fashion as they wished, as long as the designs were based on the builder’s existing platform range from 50 meters to 90 meters (164 feet to 295 feet respectively) and have set beams and gross-tonnage levels.

“Evolving the design, style and family-feeling imprinted on Benetti yachts by 140 years of history is an ambitious task as well as complicated” – Vincenzo Poerio, CEO of Azimut-Benetti’s Megayachts Business Unit, comments – “so we have decided to assign this challenge to the world’s most famous yacht designers. Sixteen firms of architects worked on 27 designs for new yachts, offering possible new directions and interpretations for the future design of our mega-yachts. Their excellence breeds our excellence.”

Nauta Design chose the 70-metre platform, a size that after the experience of Light 80 and Light 90, respectively 80 and 90 metres, and the largest yacht in the world mega yacht Project Azzam, 180 metres, recently launched at Lürssen, could be considered “medium-small”. Actually it is a size large enough to develop all the concepts that were instilled in the two slightly larger Light projects: extraordinary outdoor spaces, breath-taking views from both inside and out, balance and cleanliness of lines, seamless inside/outside connection and harmony. The blending of these key elements combines elegance and visual lightness that is the essence of the Nauta design style.

The opening transom has folding stairs for easy access to the water, and two side-opening terraces further enhance the contact with the sea and the environment.

This huge and comfortable use of the vast aft area has made possible thanks to the movement of the garage amid ship, where are located two 30’ footer tenders, which can be launched through two gull wing doors, with the help of a sliding crane.

Two convenient boarding lobbies are positioned amidships to port and starboard, just forward the garage door, where guests and crew can board tenders without disturbing the guest bathing area aft.

On the upper deck of the 72m Benetti – Nauta EDGE 72 yacht there is the ample owner’s suite of 102 sq. m., that forward of the sleeping room has an observation lounge, sweeping 270º forward view through no less than 20 sq. m. of glass. The suite opens directly to the private 105 sq. m. terrace with a flush pool on the fore deck, the very private wellness area reserved to the owner, well protected by the bulwark and in a secluded part of the yacht.

Aft on the upper deck, panoramic outdoor and indoor lounges allow breath-taking views over the seascape and offer more intimate spaces for meetings and conversation.

One deck above, the pilothouse guarantees that the Captain has the best visibility.

All paths of work on board of 72m Nauta EDGE 72 superyacht concept and their ergonomics are carefully studied so that guests and crew have reciprocal privacy, with separate and independent areas that respect the differences in use that they will make of spaces aboard. Also boarding from tenders, the crew can use the efficient boarding lobby located on port side of the staircase trunk on the lower deck.

The effort of Nauta Design has been to match its own conception of a megayacht with the enlightened relationship between exterior and interior, and its “light” philosophy in the double meaning of lightness and brightness, with some Benetti elements, in order to reinterpret in a Nauta key the extraordinary 140-year history of the Viareggio yard.

The architectural element we found is the central leaned forward sort of fashion plate, dividing the wide-bodied volume of the front half hull from the aft half. This element is continuing on the upper deck edge, forming the wing dashboard for the helm station, and underlining this inclined line that cut into two ideal parts the yacht, once again making “lighter” the view of a four-decker yacht.

Benetti Nauta Superyacht EDGE 72 - Owner's Outdoor Lounge

Benetti Nauta luxury yacht Edge 72 is a yacht that meets and exceeds the expectations for beauty, comfort and efficiency of today’s superyacht owner not by imposing itself of the surrounding environment, but by blending into it and enveloping owners and guests in the beauty and serenity that they have sought out.

The Benetti Nauta Edge 72 yacht’s  interior styling has been developed in co-operation with Standby/MarijanaRadovic studio that has interpreted the spirit and the “light” philosophy of Nauta Design by creating a space which is open to light and outside environment. Marijana’s aim was to design an elegant and sophisticated interior, but maintaining at the same time the elements of simplicity.

Benetti Nauta EDGE 72 yacht - Owner's Indoor Lounge

Benetti Nauta EDGE 72 yacht - Owner's Indoor Lounge

The interior has been segmented by an innovative use of sliding panels to create flexible spaces, which are easily adaptable to different needs and moods. These divisions are designed and structured to give a feeling of intimacy without excessively fragmenting the space and sacrificing the luxury of space.

The light comes into the interior from all sides by using reflective materials and their combinations and prisms, making natural light a dominant element of the interior. The light is then moderated by special delicate textile roller blinds, fitted to all windows.

72m Benetti Nauta EDGE 72 - Owner's indoor lounge

72m Benetti Nauta EDGE 72 - Owner's indoor lounge

The choice of materials is focused on natural, untreated wood and pleasant fabrics with leather details. The primary colours are neutral beige and brown with teal blue accenting, which acts as a reminder of the outside environment and further reinforces the connection between interior and exterior spaces. The decoration is further accented with custom paintwork on moving panels, which create a feel of sophistication. Nature is moreover invited into the interior by using enclosed plants in a sort of “indoor garden” with prisms on top, which channel natural light to them.

Benetti Nauta EDGE 72 yacht - Owner's Bathroom

Benetti Nauta EDGE 72 yacht - Owner's Bathroom

The master cabin showcases the use of geometric shapes and symmetric proportions to segment space in order to create a functional and transformable layout. A modern interpretation of the canopy, simple moving panels, is used to form different space zones thereby avoiding rigid divisions and excessive fragmentation of space. Only light “Japanese style” moving panels transform the master cabin layout in two easy modes, which result in either a very large open space, or in more private separate areas. But even when the different space zones are divided and exist separately, can intimately communicate. By just moving the panels in front of the bed to the side, the Owner can enjoy a full panoramic view from his bed and directly feel the outside environment.

This interior exemplifies Standby/MarijanaRadovic’s and Nauta’s design philosophy and approach to the use of space: clean from unnecessary and irrelevant details, where the atmosphere is flexibly set by the guests who become the creators of their space, open to the exterior and nature and closer to sea.

The intrinsic feature of Benetti Nauta luxury super yacht Edge 72 is her capability to hallmark a new style while maintaining the identity of the brand marks, creating the emotional feelings of an extreme contemporary sophistication.

New additions to the SuperyachtDESIGN Week Programme

June 06, 2013

Set to run from June 18 to 20, SuperyachtDESIGN Week is the only three-day celebration of large yacht design, organised in partnership with Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. The programme already reads as a who’s who of yacht design heavyweights. The three new amazing additions to the line-up are now sure to see that the event is cemented as a must-attend for anyone interested in the world of superyacht design.

SDW

Bringing a unique perspective from outside of the industry will be Peter Cullom-Kenyon, manager of colour and trim at Bentley. Leading a brainstorm session on material innovations, Cullum-Kenyon will discuss what is involved within the material selection process and what the yachting industry can take away from those looking from the outside in.

Also showing how car and superyacht designers can come together, Porsche’s Roland Reitenbach, Greenline’s Gianluca Ascheri and Mr
Zaman, owner, president and CEO of Royal Falcon Fleet will talk about the details behind their revolutionary catamaran. The brainchild of Zaman, the first catamaran of the fleet, the RFF135, is due to be launched later this year and promises to change our perception of yacht design.

Exploring what the future holds for the world of superyacht design and sharing ideas and innovations are primary aims of SuperyachtDESIGN Week and Benetti’s eponymous Design Innovation project embodies this ethos. A selection of top designers, including Dickie Bannenberg, Luca Dini, Ludovica Palomba, Marco Casali, Cristiano Gatto, Ben Harrison and Evan K Marshall, will present the unique concepts they conceived for Benetti’s custom range of superyachts.

PS+A Palomba Serafini designed 65m motor yacht JOLLY ROGER concept for Benetti Design Innovation Project 2012

December 18, 2012

The highly innovative 65-metre motor yacht Jolly Roger concept has been developed by PS+A Palomba Serafini for the Benetti Design Innovation Project 2012, presented by the leading Italian shipyard Benetti at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show. Jolly Roger superyacht design represents the desire to rebuild a relationship with the sea, genius loci of the boats.

The decks of the Jolly Roger yacht concept are supported by a system of ‘ribs equipped’ which lighten the volume and allow the insertion of large windows, reinterpreting the element of powers typical of Benetti. A long suspension deck at the bow becomes a living and social space.

The inspiration came from the automotive sector: its lines reminds the one of a high-powered car. Jolly Roger superyacht design re-establishes a relationship between the dynamism and elegance of the yacht and nature.

“We started from the idea of ‘high-powered car of the sea’. Aristocratic and futuristic. An automotive dna that is in the structures, which release the decks from visual obstruction by giving back the relation with nature and the sea. As a result, large windows and a long deck that looks like a terrace overlooking the water have been created,” as stated by PS+A Palomba Serafini.

72m Luca Dini Yacht Concept for Benetti Design Innovation Project

November 07, 2012

Launched by the respected Italian builder Benetti at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, the ‘Benetti Design Innovation Project‘ represents the first partnership between the yard and the Italian design firm of Luca Dini. One of the two new designs presented for this project is the 72m Luca Dini Superyacht concept described below, in addition to the 55m Luca Dini yacht with more details here.

72m Luca Dini Yacht Concept for Benetti Design Innovation Project

72m Luca Dini Yacht Concept for Benetti Design Innovation Project

Luca Dini believes the opportunity has come at the right time: Benetti‘s history is 140 years long and as a designer it is not so easy to approach it if one doesn’t have a suitable experience baggage to rely upon. So, after a 20-year career and more or less 60 boats launched, Luca Dini had the chance to approach these projects with the maximum respect towards Benetti and to the great relevance this Shipyard earned in the yacht world; Dini knew he could bring in something new that could find its space in the Benetti tradition and at the same time to be projected to the future. He thinks he was on the same wavelength with them and their Innovation concept.

In regard to the 72m Luca Dini yacht project, the studio decided to choose, as a starting point, a typical stylistic motif of the Benetti tradition that is the external pillar supporting the flying bridges. Around this detail, that was also underlined by a different color, the studio has developed the whole boat  featuring innovative technical/stylistic solutions and design. As an example the stern encompasses two decks, and a big aluminium venetian blind, electrically operated, allows to close the rear end of the stern cockpit to enhance its privacy when needed, for instance when the boat is docked stern-on.

Another distinguishing characteristic of the 72m Luca Dini megayacht concept is the wide glass area on the side that stretches vertically drawing inspiration from skyscrapers and for which has been foreseen the use of thermal-insulated glass and hidden balconies that come out (electrically operated as well) from the glass area on the side itself.

The ‘Benetti Design Innovation Project‘, a unique project presented by the prestigious Italian shipyard Benetti at the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show, represents the yard’s first collaboration with a well known Italian design firm, Luca Dini Design. One of the two new designs presented for this project is the 55m Luca Dini Superyacht concept described below, in addition to the 72m Luca Dini yacht with more details here.

The studio’s main intention was to give glass a leading role. As a matter of fact the structure of the 55m Luca Dini yacht concept seems to wrap itself up, as if it was a decoration, around the glass which is the load-bearing element. Furthermore, since eco-sustainability and energy saving are more and more important issues these days, Luca Dini has foreseen a photovoltaic panels system to be installed in the wheelhouse ceiling (on the Upper Deck) that would supply a good share of the energy needed by the boat.

Glass is in the foreground as well as on the transom, where a big window was designed, with the same shape of the portholes, to bring light to a gym. The powerful overall look of the 55m Luca Dini superyacht concept features no shortage of facets and sharp edges, and it is even more enhanced by the almost vertical prow. All of the above underlines the great amount of research devoted to every single detail of this design.

83M Evan K Marshall Yacht Concept for Benetti Design Innovation Projects

November 06, 2012

The prestigious UK designer, Evan K Marshall, is proud to present his latest motor yacht Concept 83M, developed for the Benetti Design Innovation Projects, along with Concept 63,5M yacht Skyfall. Evan K Marshall 83M superyacht concept is inspired by the Benetti shipyard’s already well-established design DNA of elegantly styled luxury vessels with sweeping as well as dramatic lines resulting in well proportioned and well-balanced profiles.

With his design proposal for the 83M yacht Evan K Marshall also tried to introduce some really dramatic and inspirational features. This is especially the case for the unique helicopter garage storage, which he has designed into the bow of the boat.

83m Evan K Marshall Superyacht Concept for the Benetti Design Innovation Project

The goal of Evan K Marshall was to create a storage compartment for the helicopter that when put away gave no evidence of the garage when looking at the Concept 83M yacht in profile. This was achieved by placing the helicopter garage forward, which creates a dramatic sweeping bow and shifts the superstructure aft getting a very “sporting” look to the profile.

To facilitate the experience of arriving on board the 83M megayacht via helicopter Evan K Marshall has also located one of the 83M’s guess lounges directly adjacent and below the helicopter landing pad so as guests arrive onboard and enter the interior they arrive into a spectacular lounge area that also doubles as the vessel’s theatre.

Luxury yacht 83M also features a fully private upper deck totally devoted to the owner which includes their state room a separate private full beam sky lounge and two fully private exterior decks. This deck is supported by direct access for the crew to service the owner’s area via its own deck pantry and separate crew elevator.

November 06, 2012

The respected UK designer, Evan K Marshall, is delighted to present his new 63,5m motor yacht Skyfall, developed for the Benetti Design Innovation Projects, along with Concept 83M yacht. Skyfall superyacht takes inspiration from the Benetti shipyard’s already well-established design DNA of elegantly styled luxury vessels with sweeping as well as dramatic lines producing well proportioned and well-balanced profiles.

Having just completed the spectacular interior for the Benetti 60M superyacht “Diamonds Are Forever” (DAF), Evan K Marshall decided to make an exterior study that could be married to a similar layout but was based around his own unique exterior styling. This allowed him to improve upon a couple of exterior design features he felt were missing from DAF yacht.

The first feature Evan K Marshall added was a private owners deck forward of the spectacular owner stateroom with tall windows looking out upon a hot tub and lounging area for the exclusive use of the owner. The second feature he added was a balcony on the port side of the main deck VIP stateroom. This is coupled with full height windows on the starboard side of the VIP stateroom creating an enclosed balcony affect and spectacular view out to sea.

On DAF yacht there is a unique and very popular semi-enclosed dining area on the sky lounge deck, but one of the features that the owner of Diamonds Are Forever missed was a fully open to the outside dining area. With the 63.5M megayacht Skyfall proposal Marshall has been able to realize all these options: a fully enclosed dining area, a semi-enclosed dining area or fully open to the outside dining area on the same sky lounge deck. This is achieved with a unique sliding glass door design solution developed by Marshall’s office.
