A few days to go until the Mallorca’s Portals Nautical Weekend

May 21, 2012

The full program of events as well as activities of the highly anticipated Portals Nautical Weekend in Mallorca has been revealed by its organisers.  Starting in a few days, there will be 60 yachts on display, featuring all of the best brands, both new and used, including sail and motor yachts from 9 to 40 metres.

PNW

These include leading yacht builds from Fairline, Oyster, Azimut, Beneteau, Bavaria, Riva, Princess, San Lorenzo, Sunseeker etc. There will also be a good selection of pre owned motor and sail boats from top local and international brokers such as Sunbird, Baxter Marine, Marivent Yachts, Drettmann and Yacht Moments.

This is the first time ever that such a large and varied display of yachts and nautical products combined with various lifestyle attractions has been staged in Mallorca, which is completely open to the public and with no entry fees.

Yachts and much more…
Apart from having all the fabulous boats, chandlery, tenders and toys on display, the organisers have gone out of their way to make this a generally entertaining event. There will even be a large display of classic cars on show for the petrol heads provided by the Mallorca Driving Club.

A special and unique part of the event will be a boat parade to take place on Sunday (27th) evening at 21.45hrs. Just after the sun goes down and darkness falls over Puerto Portals, up to twenty hand picked yachts from the show will leave their moorings, cruise around the harbour and return in an organised procession. Music, lights and a professional commentary in English and Spanish will accompany this spectacle. The participating yachts will range from the Fjord Open 40, a modern fast elegant day cruiser, a Princess 23 luxury motor cruiser available for charter, through to the Beneteau Sense 50, a completely innovative modern family sailing yacht which won the 2011 ´Cruising World Boat of the Year Award´.

Food, refreshments and shopping
During the whole three days of the event where exhibits will be open to the public from 12.00 noon to 21.00 each day, the restaurants, bars and boutiques around the port will be open for business, and offering a warm welcome to visitors as an integral part of the weekend´s entertainment.

For instance, Tristan Bistro will be serving an exclusively nautical lunchtime menu from 12am to 9pm, costing 29.50€ per person and including water and coffee. In addition to this the Tristán Bar will create a unique, nautical cocktail!

Various boutiques, such as Osama Piluca, Exclusive, Blue Marin and Rosemarine are preparing special offers. A newcomer to the port VellMari will have their inauguration during the weekend. Restaurant Diablito is preparing the upstairs chill out lounge with great views over the port, for the visitors of Portals Nautical Weekend, and laying on some specials in their menu.

Restaurant Cuatro Sietes (7777) will welcome visitors to Portals Nautical Weekend who can enjoy their special lunchtime menu, and will offer a free glass of cava for those who come to dinner.  Wellies bar and restaurant, which has become famous in the port having been there throughout its 26-year history, and La Concha also have special promotions for their valued customers.

More on the boulevard
On the shore side exhibition, which is in the shady boulevard area of the port, more participants have been confirmed and the line up so far is Global Yachts, Marine Superstore, Nauti-Parts, Sloane Helicopters, Calviá Beach Resort, Lloyds Bank International and Finest Bedlinen.

The locally based media are playing their full part in entertaining visitors and keeping the event lively. The region´s own community radio station Calvia FM will be there playing music and entertaining visitors. Nautical TV Europe (NTVE.TV) will be filming yachts, interviewing visitors and exhibitors, and putting up the footage on screens at the event in real time. The Islander, Mallorca´s own 15-year-old yachting magazine who are now in partnership with NTVE, will be providing the media and information desks, as well as reporting on the whole event.

About Puerto Portals
Set in the heart of the bay of Palma, Puerto Portals opens up to the sea as the most prestigious nautical and leisure complex of the island, and of the Mediterranean. Located just 10 km. from the centre of Palma and 16 km. from the airport, Puerto Portals has become a veritable symbol of quality.

Puerto Portals has 639 mooring spaces ranging from 8 to 60 metres in length and a shopping centre with a wide variety of quality complementary services: restaurants, bars, fashion boutiques, nautical firms, watchmakers, perfumeries and estate agents, among others.

A lively port
Throughout the year different social and sporting events are held at Puerto Portals, which lend it colour and life. Some of them, such as the parade of the Three Kings or the children’s parties, are by now classics on the local calendar. This year the well established Mallorca Classic Car Rally started and finished in the port with the Superyacht  CD1 tied up at the start line as a rather spectacular grandstand and committee boat.

Puerto Portals is also famous for other nautical events that have marked the history of the harbour, such as many top-level international sailing regattas. Moreover, the shopping area has some of the best restaurants on the island, with fashion and accessories boutiques, jewelers, perfumeries, nautical services, boat sales… in fact a whole day out for the family!

There is a possibility to check in and ‘like’ Portals Nautical Weekend on their Facebook page, featuring more information about the show.

Antigua Sailing Week 2012: Final Day 5 – Winners

May 04, 2012

In CSA 1A, Geoff Hill’s Santa Cruz 72 sailing yacht Antipodes placed first, winning the last race of this year´s Antigua Sailing Week on the final day 5.

Geoff Hill spoke dockside in Falmouth Harbour: “This is the first time we have raced the yacht and to be honest we could have done with another week to get her ready for racing, we have been tuning her up as we raced and the team have done a great job. I have been to Antigua Sailing Week before but not for about seven years and I have to say we have received a very friendly welcome from the race organisers and all of the Antipodes team are looking forward to tonight’s prize giving.”

Peter Harrison’s Farr 115 charter yacht Sojana could only manage a third today, which put them on equal points with Antipodes. Sojana could only count three first places to Antipode’s four and lost on countback, it was that close. Jan Rupert’s Tripp 75 yacht Blackbird finished the regatta with a second place in the last race to secure third.

In CSA 1B, Stefan Lehnert’s Tripp 56 yacht Passion 4C won the last race by a handsome margin to secure not the division title. Lenhert’s team has been racing in the Caribbean all season. Antigua Sailing Week did not start well for Lehnert when his son went overboard in the first race but the German Admiral’s Cup winner has had a great week, as Lehnert explains:

“When Richard Matthews and Zig Zag picked up Phillip, I was so relieved, I thanked him by giving them a crate of champagne and it has been champagne sailing since then,” smiled Lehnert. “I must also congratulate the organisers of this regatta. It has a great atmosphere and I especially enjoyed the daily prize giving, which gives you a chance to meet other sailors during the week, I am sure Passion 4C will be back in Antigua.”

The winner of CSA 2 was already decided before today’s race. Ulrich Rohde’s Swan 53 sailing yacht Dragon Fly Plus had an unassailable lead but that didn’t stop Ross Applebey’s Oyster 48 yacht Scarlet Oyster from going for it today with Yachting World Editor, David Glenn on board. The vintage Oyster corrected out to win by just 25 seconds from Christian Reynolds, Swan 51 yacht Northern Child, posting their best result of the regatta. In today’s race Andy Middleton’s First 47.7 came third. Chris Brand’s Swan 53 yacht Merel Four could only manage a sixth today but the team from the Royal Thames Yacht Club maintained their position as third overall.

In CSA 3, Richard’s Wesslund’s J/120 yacht El Ocaso made it a perfect seven with their win today. Boat Captain, Mike Caldwell spoke dockside after racing: “It may look like we ran away with the victory but many of the races were won by a few seconds. Every single member of the El Ocaso team has made a significant contribution, we all had our moments when the bow, the trim, the driver all needed to step up and be counted and that is what they did and I am very proud of them. We have been partying together all week and I am sure we will enjoy the English Harbour rum tonight!”

Second place in the class went to Nick Burn’s First 40 sailing yacht Lancelot II. His Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club team have been battling all week with Maurio Martinez’s Brazilian team racing First 40, Smile and Wave.

In CSA 4, Calvin Reed’s First 40.7 yacht Elandra won the last race of the series by a significant margin to win Class for the second year in a row. Sir Hugh Bailey’s Beneteau 456, Hugo B was second today. The team from Falmouth, Antigua have shown incredible consistency. Throughout the week, Hugo B has only been off the podium on one occasion and that was a fourth. However, Elandra has been unstoppable and the team are class winners in consecutive regattas. Jonty Layfield’s J/39, Sleeper was third overall.

In CSA 5, Geoffrey Pidduck’s Six Metre yacht Biwi Magic came out on top in the last race of the series to win the class: “The decisive moment today was the start. Blue Peter was lee-bowing High Tide and I was taking the lee-bow off Blue Peter, but because we can point much higher than both of them, Biwi Magic got right over the top of them and we made the top mark first. High Tide should have caught up downwind but they chose to go inshore and got caught up in traffic, whilst we stayed in clear air pointing directly at the mark and that as that really. It has been a fantastic week of racing but I have to say I was kicking myself yesterday when I rounded a mark the wrong way and had to go back, we could have thrown away the win there and then. It is great to win and I am sure I will be enjoying an English Harbour rum very shortly at the Antigua Yacht Club.”

Steve Carson, owner of runner up High Tide was in good spirits despite losing out on the last race. ” I helped build that boat (Biwi Magic) before it crossed the Atlantic and I suppose it has come back to bight me!” quipped Carson.

In CSA 6, Resting Goose were already secure of the class win before today’s race. Owner David Chatterton talked about his experience at Antigua Sailing Week: “It has just been fantastic, well organized, friendly, a real joy to be here and we are delighted with our win. We are just a bunch of boys from the East Coast of England, here to have some fun and all of the yachts in our class have been a delight to sail against and party with. It has been a very special week, a big thank you to everybody involved in Antigua Sailing Week.”

In today’s race, Vince White’s O’Day 35 yacht Seal saved the best to last, winning their first race of the series but a country mile. Beneteau Oceanis 473, Ormeau was second with Philip Eynon’s prestine Swan 36 yacht Arc Angel third.

In the Bareboat Class, three yachts from KH+P had a tremendous battle, as they have done all week. Alexander Pfeiffer’s L’Oiseau des Iles won today’s race putting pressure on class leader, Horst Schultze’s Sea You Later. However Sea You Later corrected out to take second place in the last race by a solitary second from Andreas Kadelbach’s Cayenne. After a six race series, Sea You Later won the class by the narrowest of margins.

In Bareboat 2, KH+P Sapphire Dancer took a convincing victory. In second place was Stewart Reed’s Dilligaff. No doubt Stewart and his team from the UK will be celebrating the skipper’s 50th birthday in fine style tonight. The Swiss Team Carondimonio racing Balaou were third.

Tonight the legendary Antigua Sailing Week Final Awards Party will take place on the water side of the Copper and Lumber Store in the historic setting of Nelson’s Dockyard. Once the silverware has been distributed the dancing will begin. The whole place will be jumping to live music from Rico and the 4 Play Band and music from Choice FM & Grown n’ Sexy featuring Dave VJ.

Hamble Point Boat Show 2012 a Great Success

May 02, 2012

The sailing season officially started with the successful three-day Hamble Point Boat Show, welcoming over 1,200 visitors and bringing together boaters, exhibitors as well as families, along with hundreds of new and second hand yachts, specialist marine products and a large number of activities for visitors.

Hamble Point Boat Show 2012 a Great Success

These included a tug of war competition, RIB rides, kayak water polo, a special flyover from the coastguard helicopter, and sea safety demonstrations from the RNLI.

Fiona Williams, Communications Supervisor at Plymouth-based Pantaenius Yacht Insurance, said: “We were very impressed with the turnout given that this was the first big show on Hamble Point marina, and it compared really well to others we have attended in other parts of the country. We had some quality leads and are looking forward to next year’s show.”

Peter Thomas, Sales Director at Inspiration Marine Group, which had a number of boats on display, said: “We were really delighted with the turnout and the level of interest from potential customers. It was also good to see so many of the big boating names there. What really struck me and my colleagues was how well the event was put together and what a good showcase it is for Hamble Point marina.”

Leading brands at the show included Dehler, Hanse, Nordhavn Yachts, Azimut and Beneteau, with visitors enjoying accompanied viewings, sea trials and boat maintenance workshops.

Andy Cunningham, Group Brokerage Manager at yacht brokers Michael Schmidt & Partners, said: “The organisers put in their all, and the boat show did what it set out to do – people were inspired and business was done.”

Neil Salter, Hamble Point Marina Manager, said: “We were delighted to attract so many people, with some travelling as far as Wales to join us. The feedback from visitors, exhibitors and tenants of the marina has been really positive, and we have lots of ideas to build on this success for next year’s show. The event is fast becoming a key feature of the boat show calendar and a great family day out on the south coast.”

Mallorca´s Portals Nautical Weekend reveals its prestigious exhibitors

May 02, 2012

The organisers of the Portals Nautical Weekend revealed yesterday some of the prominent exhibitors that have already registered for this unique weekend in Mallorca. These include the most renowned luxury yacht builders in the world, such as Fairline,  Oyster,  Azimut,  Beneteau,  Bavaria,  Riva,  PrincessSan Lorenzo,  Sunseeker and many others.

Motor yacht Greenline 40 Hybrid on display during the show

On the shoreside exhibition Yacht Center Palma (Marine Superstore) and NautiParts will have the whole range of chandlery, accessories, RIBS, tenders, jet-skis, kayaks and Xtreme Toys on show.

Or if one prefers to charter a yacht for an idyllic holiday in The Balearics, or to take an instructional course towards gaining a recognised yachting qualification, then there will be specialist companies on hand to help arranging this to suit one´s requirements.

To add to the all round entertainment value the Mallorca Driving Club will be there with a fleet of great classic cars, and Harley Davidson will have a few of the world´s most famous two wheeled machines on show.

Also planned is a boat parade, music, entertainment and some competitions to keep the atmosphere lively and constantly interesting. It is expected that all the restaurants, bars and boutique shops around the marina will join in the spirit of the event by offering specialties, promotional prices and customer focused hospitality. This is a marina that is used to hosting big events such as the Audi MedCup regatta, and its famous annual Christmas Fair, so winding up for a busy nautical weekend as the summer season really kicks in… will be an occasion they are sure to rise to!

Several brokers are preparing to reveal special models to go on show, one such is Sunbird International Yachts who are based permanently in the marina. They are planning to have the much admired and innovative motor yacht Greenline 40 Hybrid ready for viewing.

The Greenline 40 Hybrid is a development of her smaller sister, the Greenline 33 Hybrid. She is a larger yacht with the same philosophy: A low-drag energy saving Superdisplacement® hull coupled with hybrid (diesel/electric) and solar technology. This brings unique efficiency in consumption of natural resources and makes economic sense for the owner, both at the purchase stage, and during continued use of this motoryacht.

The handling, safety and seaworthiness of this yacht will provide her owners with all the home comforts for long lasting well-being on board.

Singapore Yacht Show 2012: Bigger, better and stronger than ever before

April 30, 2012

This year´s Singapore Yacht Show – bigger, better and stronger than ever before – returned in style last week, welcoming an amazingly high number of top quality visitors. The 2nd edition of this fascinating exhibition hosted some of the world’s best yacht builders, brokers as well as exhibitors.

Aerial shot of the Singapore Yacht Show 2012

The 2nd edition, held from April 27 to 29, inspired visitors and exhibitors alike with a fuller and finer line-up of some of the world’s most current and talked-about superyachts and finely crafted boats. Ultra high net worth visitors, exhibitors and yachting industry professionals participated in this year’s showpiece event, where first class contacts were made and significant deals were signed.

The first deal of the show was inked by Simpson Marine when they sold the stunning Azimut 40 yacht to a businessman residing in Singapore. Designed by the renowned Italian yacht builder, the 40ft motor yacht is an integral part of the Azimut flybridge collection, combining Italian design flair with engineering skill. Azimut Yachts is represented by Asia’s leading yacht dealer and broker Simpson Marine, which also carries a wide range of exclusive power and sailing yachts to suit all requirements.

In the final minutes of the show, Simpson Marine clinched a deal on the Azimut 53 yacht, winner of the Boat of the Year award by Power & Motoryacht Magazine 2011. The new 53 gives a feeling of space, with a luxurious full beam master suite with big hull windows that extend to the waterline. The sale was the icing on the cake and a fabulous end to a very successful show for Simpson Marine.

“The response has been great. We had expected a good showing based on the success of last year’s inaugural event, and the reaction from visitors and exhibitors has fully justified our expectations,” said Andy Treadwell, Managing Director of the Singapore Yacht Show. “This further strengthens the show’s position as the foremost yachting industry showcase in the Asia Pacific region, and I am confident that business in this new market will continue to develop rapidly now and fuel growth for the global industry.”

ONE°15 Marina, Sentosa Cove was also abuzz with activity, with more than 30 private parties held on the yachts berthed at the marina during the three-day show. The luxury and exclusiveness of a yacht is making it an increasingly attractive setting for networking events and corporate entertaining, as well as fun times for friends and family.

Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Mr Teo Ser Luck, showed support for the event and the industry by joining guests on a tour of the yachts and other exhibits on the opening day of the show.

This year’s edition featured a first class line-up of the world’s most influential yachting brands, which include Feadship, Sanlorenzo, Palmer Johnson, Westport, Heesen, Azimut, Beneteau, Princess, Cranchi, SportRiva, Mangusta and J–Craft, among others.

The show also saw strong participation from leading yacht brokers such as Burgess, Ocean Independence, Simpson Marine and Northrop & Johnson. Other top exhibitors in the Dockside Village include Sevenstar, Gulf Craft, KOP Group, and Luxury Yachts.

A parade of supercars shared the spotlight with luxurious superyachts at this year’s event courtesy of Eurosports Automobile Munich Automobiles with BMW M Owners Club and Lamborghini Club organising convoys to the yacht show.

In addition to a new location, the event will also see a new concept focused on three nautical theme worlds (luxury, recreational and active) in which the participating boats will be exhibited. From Tuesday 4 to Sunday 9 September 2012, over 250 exhibitors from the Netherlands and abroad will showcase their latest designs and nautical products within the framework of an exciting activity programme on and around the water.

Registration 15% higher than last year
It is not only the regular participants that are positive about the new location and course being taken by the HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show. The exhibitor list already includes around 30 companies that will be taking part for the first time or returning after a period of absence.

“We now have 147 confirmed exhibitor registrations with 194 boats,” says Farouk Nefzi, director of HISWA Multimedia. “This is 15% more than at the same time last year, which is a great result considering the difficult economic conditions.”

The 194 yachts registered for the HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show include 30 Dutch, European or global premieres, such as the following motorboats: the Tenderline G7 (Tenderline), Marex 320 Aft Cabin Cruiser (Marex/De Boarnstream), Sturier 620 (Jachtwerf Volharding), Maremiss 63 (Hofstra Jachtbouw), Mulder 73 Flybridge and 72 Convertible (Mulder Shipyard), Swift Trawler 48 (Bénéteau), Contest 52MC (Contest Yachts), Smalland Tempo (Smalland Maritiem), Jetten 44 Sedan (Jetten Yachting), Vivante 55 HT (Vivante Yachts), Williams Dieseljet 565 (Delta Watersport) and Thomasz Tristan 50 (Thomasz Yachts).

New sailboats include the Sense 46 (Bénéteau), Contest 72CS (Contest Yachts), Oyster 725 (Oyster Marine) and Bavaria Vision 46 (Bavaria). A surefire crowd puller will be the clipper Stad Amsterdam, which will be moored at the outdoor quay during the HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show as a hospitality ship for the city council.

Amsterdam Marina
The construction of a breakwater by the NDSM wharf is currently underway. It will provide the necessary protection for the new, permanent marina that will be built after the breakwater is completed. Amsterdam Marina will be the new home base of the HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show, featuring berths for passing vessels in summer and permanent berths during the rest of the year.

Due for completion in 2013, the permanent facilities on the quay include the HISWA Nautical Centre which will accommodate various businesses such as the HISWA Group. The upcoming edition of the HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show will make use of the new marina and temporary facilities created for the event on the quay.

Explore, Experience, Enjoy
The HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show is the ideal event for everyone who enjoys the water, loves beautiful boats or is looking to find out more about the watersport sector. The event offers visitors a wide range of products from Dutch and international yachtbuilders. Series-built or (semi)custom, tender or superyacht, steel or polyester: The available range offers an impressive overview.

Additionally, there will be a focus on popular watersports and small open (sail)boats. The exhibition programme will be combined with exciting activities on and around the water, which include demonstrations, races, sea trials, lectures, free sailing lessons for kids and much more besides.
