The 50th Boat Show of Barcelona closes its doors for another year

November 15, 2011

The International Boat Show of Barcelona, which finishes today at the Gran Via exhibition centre and Port Vell, has exceeded initial expectations, taking into consideration the very complex economic climate. The event has helped the boosting activity in the Spanish nautical market and promoted new sales and contacts. Exhibitors introduced various national and international premieres and showed the latest trends of a sector, which is moving towards more functional, innovative and ecological navigation.

The 50th anniversary edition of Spain’s most important nautical sports and recreation show has generated business and numerous contacts. With the aim of boosting sales, visitors have been able to find financial products offered by entities, such as Deutsche Bank, Banc de Sabadell, CGMER and Banque Populaire Cote D’Azur, for the purchase of yachts and moorings.

“Exhibiting companies have assessed their participation this year as being positive, hoping that many of the operations generated will be closed in the next few months”, said the president of the Barcelona Boat Show, Luis Conde, after highlighting that “in such a complex economic climate, as shown by events that, this week, have marked the course of European economy, between all of us we have managed to celebrate this 50th edition, which will possibly mark a before and after in the show’s history”.

In this sense, Fira de Barcelona and the Asociación Nacional de Empresas Náuticas (ANEN) will create a commission to outline the basic lines that should mark the show’s evolution in the years to come, in accordance with the needs of exhibitors and visitors in a changing climate and committed to greater marketing abroad. “We are aware of the importance for companies at this time of crisis to attract international buyers and compensate for the weakness of domestic demand”, said Jordi Freixas, director of the show. “Fira’s vocation is to adapt to the needs of exhibitors to increase opportunities for business and growth”, he added.

For the managing director of ANEN, Alejandro Landaluce, “now more than ever, close communication between everyone in the nautical sector is necessary in order to tackle, in the best possible way, the current economic crisis and face the future with the most guarantees”.

The 50th edition of the show, which has received around 108,000 visitors, a few hours before its close, has presented the latest trends of the nautical industry, which is increasingly committed to ecology and functionality. Around 200 well-attended activities included a regatta held on the first weekend with the participation of 1,000 sailors and 700 yachts along the Barcelona coast, demonstrations of steering with a tow, sea initiations, virtual regattas, cruise raffles, announcements of races and conferences.

The International Boat Show of Barcelona 2011 is holding a very special edition to mark its 50th anniversary. One of the star activities is a spectacular race in which around 1,000 sailors and 700 boats will be participating on the Barcelona coast during the first weekend. The aim of Spain’s most important nautical sports and recreation show is to contribute to energising the commercial activity of the sector which, according to the latest data, continues to be affected by the economic crisis, although there are positive indicators, such as a 30% increase in yacht chartering (boat hire).

The Barcelona Boat Show, which will take place from the 5th to the 13th of November, will occupy two pavilions in the Gran Via exhibition centre and in Barcelona’s Muelle de Espanya in Port Vell, with 324 national and foreign exhibitors. The on-water show will feature 130 large boats.  It is the biggest nautical sports and recreation exhibition in Spain. Exhibitors will showcase a wide range of accessories, canoes and kayaks, inflatables, jet skis, sail and motor boats, yachts, charters, tugs and outboard engines, among other products. Marinas and tourist and nautical sports operators will also be present.

“We are aware of the great effort the exhibitors are making to be present in this 50th edition and this demonstrates their confidence in the event, which unfortunately coincides with a very delicate time for this industry due to the crisis”, said Luis Conde, the show’s president. According to the latest data from the Asociación Nacional de Empresas Náuticas, ANEN, boat registrations dropped 8.78% between January and September this year, confirming the negative trend that started mid 2008.

“We have intensified resources in order for the show to contribute to energising commercial activity and generating business”, explained Jordi Freixas, the show’s director. “Holding 50 shows has to be, in addition to a civic fiesta, a unique time to close sales operations and support the sector”.

Yacht Charters continue to rise

Despite the crisis, enthusiasts still want to sail, which has led to a big increase in boat hire for yacht chartering, with a 30% increase between January and September 2011 over the same period last year. “In Spain, the nautical sector has great growth potential and we must be prepared for when our economy gets going again”, said Alejandro Landaluce, managing director of ANEN.

Barcelona, European nautical capital

For the first time, the show is hosting the Catalan Sailing Week, the 25th edition. The coincidence of these two events will turn Barcelona into the European nautical capital and centre of attention for professionals and enthusiasts, who will be able to enjoy an unusual spectacle: a big race with the participation of some 1,000 national and international sailors, and 700 sailboats (16 different classes), which will paint the Barcelona coast white.

With the name “Trofeo Salón Náutico Ciudad de Barcelona – 25 Semana Catalana de Vela Gran Premio Generalitat de Catalunya” (City of Barcelona Boat Show – 25th Catalan Sailing Week Trophy), the race will take place on the 5th and 6th of November in six areas between the Port Forum and Hotel W.  In addition to the Boat Show and the Catalan Sailing Federation, numerous companies, nautical organisations and institutions have participated.

Other initiatives being held to celebrate the 50th edition are a concentration of classic Riva boats, organised in collaboration with the Riva Historic Society; the publication of a book that synthesises the five decades of the show and the sector in Spain; an exhibition on this subject; the issue of a stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary; and the coining of a medal, which will complete a unique world collection.

There will also be virtual races, sea initiations, trips in sail boats for disabled persons, draws for cruises, announcements of races and seminars, tow steering demonstrations, fishing simulators and talks by navigators, among other activities, to make the city vibrate with the show and discover all the possibilities of sailing and the nautical world. All the information on the activities can be found at www.salonnautico.com.

After the success of the last two years, a Village will be set up in Port Vell, under the sponsorship of Codorniu, with a restaurant and terrace-café. The aim is to provide a meeting place for impresarios, sportspersons and guests from the nautical world.

A long run

The Barcelona Boat Show, the first edition of which dates back to 1963, is one of the oldest in Europe, founder member of the International Federation of Boat Show Organisers (IFBSO), and an international benchmark event. With the “Creu de Sant Jordi”, the Placa de Oro al Mérito Turístico and the Medalla de Oro al Mérito Deportivo, among other public recognitions, the event still has the main objectives it had when it began: to promote the industry and encourage interest in nautical sports and navigation. Organised by Fira de Barcelona and held annually, the show has the backing of the Asociación Nacional de Empresas Náuticas, ANEN, and of the sector’s leading organisations.

A short history of the Barcelona Boat Show on its 50th anniversary

October 10, 2011

1963 Barcelona Boat Show

1963 Barcelona Boat Show

The first edition of the Barcelona Boat Show was set up in June 1963, by a group of personalities who are linked to sports and the nautical industry, with Juan Antonio Samaranch at the forefront along with the support of Fira de Barcelona. The event, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, has had a long and successful run and is, today, the sector’s biggest commercial platform in Spain, its main meeting point and an international leader.

The Barcelona Boat Show is created in 1963 with the aim of boosting the sports and recreational nautical industry and promoting nautical sports. At the time, there are only a few specialised companies and marinas and an absolute lack of knowledge among the Spanish population about the possibilities of navigation. Nonetheless, thanks to the enthusiasm and drive of a group of people passionate about boating and the few professionals that existed at the time, the show manages to open its doors successfully with the participation of 150 exhibiting companies in hall 1 of Fira de Barcelona’s Montjuïc exhibition centre.

After the success of the first edition, which took place within the framework of the very popular Feria de Muestras, it was agreed that the show would be an annual monographic event. In 1965, in the international category, it starts to exercise its role as a voice for the concerns of the sector, a function it has maintained until today.

1966 Barcelona Boat Show

1966 Barcelona Boat Show

Only two years later, in 1967, the nautical industry’s first major boom takes place: new ports are opened, boats are built with their own design or under licence from foreign shipyards, boats can be seen in the sea, wood starts to give way too fibre glass and ranges grow considerably. In line with this development, the show sees a significant increase in exhibitors in 1969 and its organising committee prioritizes the growth of young people’s enthusiasm for the sea -the appearance of the Optimist in ’68 being crucial to this.

The sector undertakes actions to raise the government’s awareness of the importance of carrying out reforms on registration procedures and taxation, with the aim of boosting an industry and trade that are forecast to grow and generate wealth and jobs for the country. The same year, the Law of Marinas is enacted; this is a basic toll for the expansion of the nautical industry in Spain and is considered to be one the Boat Show’s most important contributions to the sector.

The 70s: the boom of tourism and nautical sports

The sector becomes more and more professional and, in the 70s, there is a notable increase in enthusiasts, although the figures show a big gap between Spain and other countries. For example, while in Spain the ratio is one boat for each 1,500 inhabitants, in Italy it is one per 192 and, in Scandinavian countries, it is one per 62. In any case, the government gives signs of its interest in the sector and the show; and in 1973, it grants it the golden plaque for tourist merit, aware of the importance of nautical tourism in Spain.

The show also continues to reinforce its sports aspect as a complement to its commercial side. Boat Show Trophy Races are organised and awards are given to the best sportspersons of the year, such as the Spanish Optimist team, which become World Champions in the races held in Sweden.

1976 Barcelona Boat Show

1976 Barcelona Boat Show

Ecology starts to make an appearance with the exhibition of the Dephins, the first electric engines. In 1976, the event receives the name of “International Boat and Sports Show” and opens up to the camping and caravanning sector.  Samaranch, who has been president of the show since its beginnings, leaves the post in 1978, having been appointed Spain’s ambassador in the Soviet Union and Outer Mongolia. He is replaced by Jacinto Ballesté, also member of the founding team. In 1979, the Asociación Española de Puertos Deportivos y Turismo is founded and its secretariat is installed in the Boat Show with Jorge Salvat at the helm. This represents one further step in the sector’s development.

The 80s: the popularisation of nautical activities

The 80s bring many changes and innovations: the foundations to make the show more international are laid, it is split into sectors and the dates are brought forward in order to allow shipyards to programme their purchases and production. These changes are positive for the event, which sees the number of exhibitors and exhibition floor space grow, up to the middle of this decade. New nautical sports, such as windsurfing, take off and the first solar panels to be installed on board are exhibited. Boat charters and hire start to have a place in the show, with proposals to attract a public eager to navigate but unable to afford a boat of their own.

The number of new products presented by exhibitors also increases. Electronic equipment becomes smaller and cheaper and bow propellers for medium-length boats are introduced, making it easier to dock and cast off.

1985 Barcelona Boat Show

1985 Barcelona Boat Show

Activities to bring the public into contact with the nautical world increase, with navigation courses, steering with a tow, submarine photograph contests, navigational simulators, announcement of races, etc. Associations, federations, and institutions hold more and more assemblies, juntas and meetings within the setting of the show. In short, the show, which receives the Creu de Sant Jordi (Saint Georges’ Cross) from the Generalitat de Catalunya in 1988, is confirmed as the sector’s meeting point.

The 90s: the first on-water show

The 90s start with optimism. In 1992, the Barcelona Olympic Games are held, which represents a turning point for tourism, including the nautical industry: charter companies are consolidated and new marinas are built.

The number of motor boats at the show increases, especially large units and fisher-cruisers, as do new products presented by exhibitors; new materials, such as the composite, the latest design and equipment proposals and the latest technological advances, above all in the field of electronics, are exhibited. The concepts of sustainability and ecology take hold in the nautical world, even in recreational fishing.

The show is also consolidated as the meeting point for the sector, which is more and more professionalized, taking its concerns to the administration via the new associations that continue to arise. It also becomes a setting for the announcement of important races.

1996 Barcelona Boat Show

1996 Barcelona Boat Show

Nonetheless, during this decade, the show’s main new feature is its arrival at the sea. As an addition to the Montjuïc exhibition centre, in 1995, Port Vell is set up for the first time to provide the setting for the On-Water Show with larger national and international boats. The same year, Jordi Montserrat takes over from Miguel Rafart as director of the show. In 1998, Fira de Barcelona’s Administrative Board appoints Jorge Salvat as President Emeritus, after having been the show’s president for 19 editions. He is replaced by the well-known impresario Enrique Puig.

A new century: the number of nautical enthusiasts grows

Enthusiasm for nautical activities multiplies and the show begins to develop in spectacular fashion. One of the highlights occurs in 2002, coinciding with the disappearance of the peseta and the introduction of the euro: the event moves to the new, modern Gran Via exhibition centre, maintaining the On-Water Show in Port Vell. In response to sector demands, the dates are also changed to the first week in November, in order to give continuity and avoid coinciding with other international shows.

Between 2002 and 2007, the Boat Show continues to grow, boosting the leisure activities and nautical sports sectors and showcasing national and world premiers. It is also the venue for meetings of international organisations with the presence of personalities related to the nautical industry from around the world, such as the International Sailing Federation (2003). New organisations are created within the show’s framework, such as the Asociación Española de Clubes Náuticos and the Asociación Nacional de Empresas Náuticas, ANEN (2006). In 2007, Jordi Freixas is appointed new director of the show to replace Jordi Montserrat.

2006 Barcelona Boat Show

2006 Barcelona Boat Show

After years of optimism, the sector begins to show signs of recession in 2008, which leads to concern that a world scale economic crisis is on the horizon. That year, Enrique Puig, the show’s president, passes away and, for that edition, the president emeritus, Jorge Salvat, steps in. In 2009, Luis Conde is appointed the new president.

From that year, the effects of the crisis are heightened. Until now, the show has been carrying out actions to support companies, reinforcing its role as the main platform for energising trade and the sector’s main setting, from which to express its needs and look for solutions to tackle the difficult economic situation.

Despite the recession, nautical companies have stood out for their efforts and commitment to technological innovation with the development of new, safer, sustainable and environmentally-friendly products. At the same time, lovers of the sea, who continue to grow in numbers, are looking for new formulas via which to enjoy the sea, and interest in charter and shared property is growing.

Since the 70’s official launch in August 2008, Riviera has built and launched an impressive six of its new flagship 70s, which are very customised builds rather than pure production boats.

Riviera’s large boat program project manager Paul Wrench said the owners of this  70 extended the flybridge rear deck, which provided added cockpit protection from the elements and increases the flybridge entertaining space.

“The 70 is ideally suited for long rang cruising and this boat will have a permanent skipper.  It will be used full-time for six months of the year and being the first Riviera 70 to go to Europe, the long term Riviera owner is happy to promote the 70 in Europe,” Paul said.

“The beauty of this vessel is that it is a self-contained luxury waterfront home that can take you anywhere in the world, as it has its own fresh water maker system that produces 285 litres per hour and twin generator sets to make all the power needed to live aboard, sleeping accommodation for up to 12 in four separate cabins each with their own ensuite, an aft galley which is centrally located between the cockpit and saloon and opens to the mezzanine alfresco dining area through a large awning window and stainless steel and glass door.  The aft galley positioning can also easily serve the flybridge.”

Paul said the skipper came to Australia once during the construction phase and then for the sea trials prior to shipping and he was very impressed with the vessel, saying it ran very well and the performance was in line with their expectations.

“The skipper said the overall quality of the 70 was extremely high and the owner would be very happy with the final result,” Paul said

Director of sales and marketing for Europe, Asia and the Middle East, David Taylor said the owner was from Switzerland but kept his boat in Gibraltar, which is at the mouth of the Mediterranean.

“During the summer months he spends a lot of time on his boat traveling throughout The Mediterranean. He fishes as well as entertains business clients,” David said.

“He selected the 70 Enclosed Flybridge based on his past experience with Riviera, the layout, fit and finish, quality and the soft dry ride he experienced with his pervious Rivieras, a 51 and 58 Enclosed Flybridge.  Another reason he selected Riviera was the ability to customise the boat to his liking for business and entertainment for instance the office, saloon layout, galley layout, extended flybridge, sun pads, and crew quarters to name just a few personalised changes.

The owner has very kindly allowed us to display his 70 Enclosed Flybridge yacht at the Barcelona International Boat Show which will be held November 5-13. Several dealers will bring prospective customers to Barcelona to see this exciting new boat, which is the first 70 Enclosed Flybridge yacht to be displayed in Europe.

Riviera offers 20 different models from 36 to 85 feet across four model series Flybridge, Sport Yacht, Offshore Express and Motor Yachts.

The next edition, which will take place from the 5th to the 13th of November, will be held in its usual venues: the Gran Via exhibition centre, which will house the majority of exhibitors and Port Vell, where the On-Water exhibition will take place.

Alongside the commercial exhibition, which encompasses all types of products and services related to sports and recreational boating, the show will also host a wide range of attractive activities on occasion of its 50th anniversary.  “We want to make Barcelona vibrate and breathe a nautical atmosphere and explain to the public that boating does not only give fans great satisfaction, but is also a sector that creates employment and wealth for the country”, said the president of the Organising Committee, Luis Conde.

One of the main initiatives is the “Trofeo Salón Náutico Ciudad de Barcelona-Semana Catalana de Vela” (City of Barcelona Boat Show-Catalan Sailing Week Trophy), a spectacular event on the Barcelona coast, in which around 1,000 vessels are expected to participate with the aim of bringing the sailing world to the general public. All disciplines will be represented, such as the optimist class-for the youngest navigators – cruisers, light sail and kitesurf. The contest, which will be held during the weekends, is organised by the Catalan Sailing Federation.

The history of the Boat Show in an exhibition

Other proposals include the publication of a book, which synthesises the five decades of the show and of the sector in Spain, and an exhibition on the subject, which will include pictures of the posters that have advertised the show since its foundation.

Riva motorboats in the port

Another activity will be the exhibition of about thirty classic Riva boats, built by this famous Italian shipyard in the 50s and 60s. Visitors to Barcelona port will also be able to see these emblematic boats sailing along the Barcelona coast. This event is organised with the collaboration of the Riva Historic Society and will take place during the last weekend of the show.

This edition will feature a commemorative stamp

Another of this year’s surprises will be the issue of a stamp on the opening day to commemorate its 50th edition.  A special sub-post office will be set up where the official postmark will be applied; a special envelope will also be created for the event, The Boat Show will also coin a commemorative 50th anniversary medal, which will complete a unique world collection. Dedicated on this occasion to the Spanish Armada, the Barcelona Maritime Museum has been commissioned to design the coin, which reproduces the Buque de Proyección Estratégica (Strategic Projection Vessel) “Juan Carlos I”. Collectors will be able to acquire the coin in the show’s offices.

50th Anniversary Gala

With the aim of celebrating this long journey with the sector’s main agents, the show is holding a Commemorative Gala on opening night in the Palau Nacional de Catalunya, which will include a tribute to exhibitors that have been participating in the show since the beginning.

The Barcelona Boat Show, the first edition of which dates back to 1963, is one of the oldest in the Europe, founder member of the International Federation of Boat Show Organisers (IFBSO) and, currently, an international benchmark.

Five theme areas

This year’s show will maintain its five traditional theme areas located in Gran Via (Espai del Mar, Fun Beach, Marina Tradicional, Espai del Pescador and Espai Innovació), with numerous activities for professionals and the general public, such as fishing simulators, sea initiations, announcements of regattas, seminars, talks by navigators, etc.

Village in Port Vell

After the success of the last two years, the organisers will again set up a Village in Port Vell, with the sponsorship of Codorniu, featuring a restaurant and terrace café. The aim is to provide business persons, sportspersons and guests from the nautical world with a meeting place.
