Transatlantic Superyacht & Maxi Regatta 2012: Line honours claimed by charter yacht Rán Leopard

December 05, 2012

This year’s Transatlantic Superyacht & Maxi Regatta was completed by the Farr 100 charter yacht Rán Leopard in 7 days, 8 hours, 59 minutes and 12 seconds, claiming line honours as well as breaking the course record. Rán Leopard superyacht was helmed by Niklas Zennström, with Adrian Stead on tactics.

Zennström and his 18-strong crew crossed the finish line off Virgin Gorda shortly after 10 p.m. UTC last night after covering 3,300 miles at an average speed of 18.6 knots. The new course record beats the previous one set by superyacht Hetairos in 2011 by 25 hours, 59 minutes and 18 seconds.

The race is organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in collaboration with the International Maxi Association (IMA) and saw six maxi yachts and superyachts leave Tenerife on 26th November bound for the YCCS Clubhouse and Marina in Virgin Gorda’s North Sound.

With a curriculum that includes wins in the Rolex Fastnet Race, Copa del Rey and Mini Maxi Rolex World Championship, Zennström approached his first transatlantic regatta with the enthusiasm and concentration that has made Rán one of the top names in international racing. Chartering the 30.5-metre supermaxi yacht Leopard was certainly a smart first step and the crew regularly reported boat speeds of 20 knots and above.

“It was an amazing crossing!” said a delighted Zennström on his arrival at YCCS Virgin Gorda. “The crew did an excellent job and the boat achieved the result we were aiming for. During the crossing we faced a maximum wind of 35 knots and the boat’s maximum speed was 32-33 knots. Thankfully we had no major failures onboard, just the usual minor breakages for a comfortable racing boat. We are very happy to have established a new record for this transatlantic regatta and we are very happy to be here in the new YCCS Clubhouse.”

The 32-metre Baltic Yachts sailing yacht Nilaya was in second place at approximately 395 miles from the finish at 9 a.m. UTC. Peter Harrison’s Farr 115 charter yacht Sojana, a veteran competitor in all five editions of the Transatlantic Superyacht & Maxi Regatta, followed approximately 100 miles behind in third place with Oscar Konyukhov’s Med Spirit yacht, the 27.7-metre sloop representing the Russian Yachting Federation, in fourth.

Following a more southerly course are fifth-placed superyacht Cape Arrow, a 2011-launched Southern Wind 100, and the majestic Shenandoah of Sark yacht, the 1902-launched 55-metre triple masted schooner owned by Francesco, Carlo and Andrea Micheli.

Rán Leopard yacht’s excellent crossing time leaves them on track for victory in corrected time while the battle is now on between the remaining five sailing giants for second and third places. It is advised to follow the rest of the arrivals with Live Tracking from both the YCCS and IMA websites. Several of the boats are updating individual blogs while racing and further updates are published on the IMA website.

Trophies will be awarded at the prize giving ceremony scheduled to take place at the latest on 12th December at the YCCS Virgin Gorda Clubhouse which was officially inaugurated in January of this year and overlooks the purpose-built YCCS Marina which has been operational since March 2011.

Hall SCR: Seamless Carbon Rigging – The Ultimate Performance Upgrade
Hall’s revolutionary SCR Seamless Carbon Rigging is made by fusing the vertical and diagonal shroud elements form a single, homogeneous piece of rigging. Hall SCR is solid carbon and therefore impervious to water. Other composite rigging products, with braided covers and air pockets inside, let moisture in, which adds weight and can reduce strength.  With proper maintenance, its life expectancy, like that of a Hall carbon mast, can be many decades.

SCR Airfoil: The first, and only, carbon fiber rigging with a streamlined airfoil shape. Hall’s revolutionary SCR Airfoil dramatically reduces drag by reducing frontal area to its absolute minimum. SCR Airfoil reduces upwind drag by 50% over round rigging. Baltic 78 charter yacht Lupa of London completed her recent refit with Hall SCR Airfoil rigging.

LUPA OF LONDON Under Sail

LUPA OF LONDON Under Sail

SCR Round: Hall SCR round rigging has a profile almost identical with Nitronic 50 rod. It has a smaller diameter – and therefore less drag – than bundled carbon and PBO systems. 2012 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup Supermaxi winner, the Baltic 112 superyacht Nilaya, is outfitted with Hall SCR round.

SCR Continuous: The low-profile rigging shape of SCR continuous as it passes through the spreader allows us to offer a minimum size, elegant spreader tip design. SCR Airfoil continuous rigging can be found on the recently launched Ker 51 Varuna. A sample will be available at the Hall Spars booth, situated at QS32 in the Darse Sud Tent.

SCR Discontinuous: Hall’s SCR discontinuous carbon rigging features our unique, easy-to-install Split Tip Cups that are custom machined for SCR stemball terminals. Hall uses only titanium connections with the carbon rod. At half the weight of stainless, Hall’s titanium end fittings are the smallest and lightest end fittings available. Swan 80 sailing yacht Selene was recently fitted with SCR discontinuous rigging, along with the recently launched Tulip 88 yacht and Contest 72 yacht.

SCR Retrofit Package
Hall SCR carbon rigging is up to 70% lighter than metal rod rigging.  Upgrading to Hall SCR is the best way to improve performance, and one of the easiest. Hall has introduced an SCR retrofit package to replace conventional stainless rod rigging simply and easily. The system is “plug and play” with no mast re-work or spreader modifications required.  New rods can be installed in a matter of hours, and in many cases, Hall rods interface with existing mast and deck hardware for further cost savings.

New AutoLock Design
New for 2012, Hall introduces an internal lock with visual and audio proximity indicators. It is a simple and refined device using standard Hall AutoLock bodies and components that can handle multiple bullets for use with mainsails. Proven to be easily serviceable, the lock can be taken out of the mast with the halyard still in it – no messenger lines needed.

AutoLocks have proven consistency and performance on boats including the Swan 45, Ker 43, Antrim 40, Ker 40, Gunboat 90 and Baltic 78.  Compact and versatile, all parts are self-contained and there are no trip lines to tangle on deck or in the mast. The most consistent and easy-to-service solution on the market, Hall AutoLocks provide a new level of elegant simplicity.

Hall Spars Commercial Division
Hall Spars has also been very busy with non-marine composite projects for the energy, aerospace, and defense industries. Details are classified for many of Hall Spars aerospace and defense projects, but in our most recent energy project, Hall manufactured turbine components for the United States’ first commercial, grid-connected tidal energy project. Hall Spars all-composite Advanced Design Cross Flow turbines are key to Ocean Renewable Power Company’s TidGen turbine generator unit (TGU) design. The TGU is the core component or “engine” for ORPC’s proprietary hydrokinetic device, which captures the energy of moving water without using dams or other barriers.

Hall Spars built the tidal turbines with carbon fiber reinforced composites, an ideal material for the loads the turbines will encounter and the marine environment in which they will operate.

Hall Spars Team
Hall Spars is very proud to announce that Andrea Merani has recently received his Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate and is now attending the Master Project Managing training. Andrea joined the Hall team in 2004, with the opening of the Hall Med Sales & Service office.

Hall Spars Service
Hall Spars and Rigging has more than 30 years of experience building and servicing the world’s most innovative high-performance spars and rigging. No one is better equipped to service one’s superyacht’s mast and rigging. With locations worldwide, technicians from Hall Spars international service team will travel to one’s boat. Hall spar or not, one can still get the famous Hall Service. From annual inspections to rigging replacement, Hall Spars is here to provide the expert service that guarantees the best ongoing performance.

Baltic 83 sailing yacht GOF delivered

July 05, 2012

Delivered at the end of May, 2012, the Baltic 83 Sailing Yacht GOF is a pinnacle of a dream by the Owner who had very clear ideas about what he desired. Taking actively part in the design process and the production of the GOF superyacht Baltic 83, the Owner is planning on spending a large amount of time aboard his new vessel.

Baltic 83 sailing yacht GOF

Baltic 83 sailing yacht GOF

A performance cruiser, the Baltic 83 yacht GOF was designed primarily for warm-weather cruising and ultimate self-sufficiency for long-distance passages. At the same time the yacht should be high performance and able to acquit herself well in the occasional regatta. The lines were drawn by judel/vrolijk in close collaboration with Baltic Yachts own in-house team, although the owner’s passion for aesthetics shines through GOF, particularly in her interior where the owner had a very strong input into the design.

Sailing Yacht GOF - a Baltic 83 yacht

Sailing Yacht GOF - a Baltic 83 yacht

Designed as a world cruiser, the specification was for the Baltic 83 sailing yacht GOF to be high performance but low maintenance, robust and reliable. Hull construction was in fibreglass aramid with carbon stiffeners, while the carbon rig was fitted with nitronic rod rigging for ultimate reliability.

Garth Brewer, formerly the skipper of Baltic 147 Visione, brought his experience and feedback into developing the Baltic 83’s uncluttered deck layout. “The sail-handling has been simplified with the incorporation of a furling boom and a furling headsail,” says Brewer. “The rig has been kept clean with straightforward sail-handling controls. Staysail and inner-forestay are removable whilst sailing.”

Interior of the Baltic 83 yacht GOF

Interior of the Baltic 83 yacht GOF

With very open spaces and minimal furniture, one of the challenges of the Baltic 83’s interior was to create good sound insulation. The owner opted for little storage space in favour of larger living areas, including the owner’s cabin forward of the mast which is particularly large for a yacht of this size. The saloon sits above the engine compartment thanks to the additional height afforded by the deckhouse, and just to the aft of the saloon are two guest cabins. Situated furthest aft are two crew cabins, the galley area and the nav station. With white-painted ceilings twinned with half-height panels of teak, the overall effect is one of a spacious, light and airy atmosphere. While storage units in the interior have been kept to a minimum, the boat itself has been equipped with large storage tanks, in keeping with the Baltic 83’s ambitions to be a high-range boat, capable of crossing oceans without need for replenishment.

32.6m sailing yacht Baltic 107 Custom by Baltic Yachts with delivery in 2013

July 05, 2012

The 32.6m sailing yacht Baltic 107 Custom is a spectacular lightweight, high performance sloop, currently under construction at the prestigious Finish builder Baltic Yachts. With the exterior design by renowned German Frers and the interior styling by well known Adam Lay, the Baltic 107 Custom superyacht is scheduled for delivery in 2013.

With a total displacement of 83500kg, of which 34500kg is ballast, the luxury yacht Baltic 107 will have an impressive power to weight ratio. The lifting keel enables draft to vary from 3.35m to 4.85m.

Production is well underway, with the deck laminated and most of the structural elements of the hull now complete. Joinery and finishing the interior are next on the list, followed by installation of the engine.

“With nature, not with glamour” has been the enduring message from the client in planning the interior of his Baltic 107 yacht currently under construction.

B107 yacht’s interior has an owner-forward, crew-aft layout with a generous VIP cabin just forward of the mast. This sits adjacent to an owner’s study which leads to the generous en-suite owner’s cabin in the bow. A spacious raised saloon, two guest cabins and a dedicated children’s cabin complete the guest arrangement. The commercial standard galley, twin-crew cabins and head make up the crew accommodation.

B107 Yacht - Saloon & Study - Interior by Adam Lay

The 32.6m superyacht B107 is the first Frers-designed yacht Adam Lay Studio has worked on, although Adam has worked with Baltic Yachts before, on the design and build of 141’/34m luxury yacht Canica, before he started his own studio. MCM’s Nigel Ingram is managing the project with Mark von Drashek and Georges Bourgoignie completing the owner’s team.

The interior styling has been greatly influenced by an area of great natural beauty in North America where the client spends much of his leisure time. Taking cues from rock formations, lichen, trees, water and stunning paintings by a group of talented individuals, have culminated in an interior which pushes the boundaries for a yacht of this size.

Texture, natural looking surfaces, special finishes containing pigments made from the berries of plants found in the region, provide an immediate connection with one of the owner’s favourite places in the world. The mainly neutral but textural built-in joinery is augmented by bright bold colours in the upholstery fabrics, which are again inspired by the luminous lichen colours found in this region.

Special custom-made furniture pieces, lighting, and feature bulkhead panels are being developed specifically for the project which demands a completely new interpretation of a sailing yacht’s interior. Light-weight construction techniques and unique surface finishes have seen Baltic Yachts’ joinery department rise to the challenge, and will ensure the B107 yacht’s interior is like no other in the sailing world.
