Cabbage Tree Island Race: Sailing yacht Wild Oats XI claims new record

November 22, 2010

Bob Oatley’s 100ft supermaxi Wild Oats XI, with Mark Richards at the helm, has smashed the Cabbage Tree Island Race record today, finishing the 180 nautical mile race at 10:13:35am, slicing more than two hours off the time set by Stephen Ainsworth’s RP63 Loki in the race last year.

It was a tidy day’s work for Wild Oats XI; a Reichel/Pugh 100 that sails under the burgee of the Hamilton Island Yacht Club, setting a new time of 14 hours, 13min, 35 sec to best the 63 foot Reichel/Pugh designed Loki, by two hours, 19 mins 12 sec in variable conditions.

A very pleased Mark Richards said that it was a great night out on the water and great preparation for the supermaxi, prior to her taking to the start line on Boxing Day, in an attempt for claim a fifth line honours win in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

“The boat performed beautifully well in the conditions…but it was a tough last four to five hours going dead upwind and luckily the breeze didn’t die out completely,” Richards said. “Our weather modelling had us finishing a few hours earlier than this, but that’s the vagaries in the weather for you – whatever will be will be. We can’t be unhappy with taking the record.”

With his focus directed at securing a fifth line honours win in the Rolex Sydney Hobart, Richards said there is still lots of training and preparation to do yet. “This race is an important part of our program before starting the Hobart on Boxing Day, and we will be out there practising and racing to ensure we are match fit,” he added.

Although the Bureau of Meteorology predicted southerly winds of 10-20 knots, it was a different story on water.

The fleet of 36 yachts, one of the largest in recent history for this race organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, got off to a clean start yesterday evening at 8.00pm, in 11 knots of south sou’west breeze. Wild Oats XI stayed close to the pin end of the start line, with Richards putting the boat in a perfect position to have a clean run up the western channel of the harbour and out of the heads.

Hoisting their huge Code 0 sail, Oats streaked away from Lahana who was hot on her heels. Stephen Ainsworth’s Loki opted for the middle of the start line and led the smaller boats up the harbour, with many unfurling their spinnakers, making the most of the inshore breeze.

At the 0700hrs sked this morning, Bruce McKay’s Sayer 12 Wasabi reported “It was an excellent kite ride up the coast with the normal fare of dolphins joining in the ride and bright moonlight. AFR (Midnight Rambler) as always is close by.”

“We rounded the Island just after 5.30am – everyone has enjoyed breakfast of toasted ham, cheese and tomato sandwiches and fruit, with the crew now sitting on the rail with coffee and praying for the wind to go east as forecast,” McKay said.

Julie Hodder, navigator on Rob Reynolds’ DK46 Exile, said “We were very happy to get out of Sydney Heads not far from Lahana and we had a great run up the coast to Port Stephens. From there to Cabbage Tree Island the conditions got very sloppy and slow.”

“We rounded the Island with Krakatoa II, but as they are not suited to going to windward, we overtook them and made our way out to sea. AFR Midnight Rambler and Kerisma tacked away after rounding the Island and they fared a little better.” Hodder added.

Shortly after 07:30hrs, Exile was wallowing in a hole in the breeze near Stockton Bight, having experienced many changes in the direction of the breeze. With just over 72 nautical miles to go and maintaining a boat speed of just 2 knots, the crew were beginning to cancel their social engagements for this evening, but were pleased that the sun was out, with Hodder quipping she had packed her bikini top!

Danny McConville, crew boss on Darryl Hodgkinson’s Beneteau 45 Victoire, also reported a favourable night’s sailing with a kite run all the way to the Island, but getting parked once they rounded the Island.

“The crew dined on some excellent pasta and have just been re-fuelled by breakfast, whilst waiting for the breeze to kick in, but at least the sun is out! What more could you want?” McConville noted.

And shortly after that, the much anticipated breeze kicked in at 9 knots from the south west bringing Victoire alongside AFR Midnight Rambler just near Stockton Bight. A slight mishap on a tack saw AFR get caught in the current, losing all wind and doing an unplanned 360⁰.

Just one retirement had occurred overnight – Minerva, the DK43 owned by Tim Cox and skippered by Edward Cox, retired due to steering problems. She has safely returned to her home port.

The next boats expected to cross the line is the 98ft Bakewell-White designed Lahana, owned by Peter Millard and John Honan, closely followed by Wild Oats X and last year’s race record holder Stephen Ainsworth’s RP63 Loki.

An updated report will be sent out once the 36-boat fleet has finished the race and overall positions are known.

A step closer to new yachting facilities in Broome, Australia.

November 17, 2010

In May 2010, the State Government announced funding to construct a boating facility located in west Roebuck Bay. The proposed facility, adjacent to the Port of Broome slipway, is planned to include a multi-lane boat ramp, protective breakwaters, dredged basin and a floating jetty, along with access roads and parking areas.

Local Broome boating identity Jeff Cooper has been appointed chairman of the community reference group for the proposed State Government Royalties for Regions $35million Broome Boating Facility.

Mr O’Brien said Mr Cooper is president of the Broome Fishing Club and his professional involvement in the aquaculture industry through Kimberley TAFE make him well placed to serve as chairman of the reference group.

“The reference group, to be formed over the coming month, will include representatives of the community and local user groups.” he said.

“Feedback from the community reference group will be used to refine the design concept to provide a facility that will meet the needs of the majority of the Broome boat users.”

As detailed in the recently released Broome Boating Facility Report, the proposed facility will be located in West Roebuck Bay and is planned to include a major boat launching ramp, sheltering breakwaters, dredged basin and a floating jetty.

“Over the next 18 months detailed planning, investigation, approval and design will be the focus of the project and tenders for construction activities are expected to be called in late 2011,” Mr Grylls said.

“Broome’s cyclonic weather climate, coupled with its very high tidal range, presents challenges in meeting the needs of the local boating community.”

The number of trailable vessels in Broome, Australia is predicted to double to about 3,000 by 2031 and the proposed facility is being planned to accommodate the demand.

The 2011 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show has attracted more than 130 exhibitor applications within two weeks of bookings opening.

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2011

“We are delighted with this positive response from the industry. We expect that the Show will again top well over 400 exhibitors by May next year,” said Sanctuary Cove Events and Operations Manager Phil Shaw.

The 23rd Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in 2011 will feature a newly-configured space including one of the largest pavilion structures erected in Australia for an annual event.

Some exciting new displays at the 2011 show include New Zealand exhibitor Diverse Projects showcasing Black Pearl, a 31.5m long range super yacht designed by Craig Loomes of LoMocean Design.

This vessel has been built to Germanischer Lloyd 100 A5 class survey with no expense spared on equipment. Diverse Project’s Lars Bjorklund said the interior is designed by Chris Connell of Melbourne fame and constructed by Specialist Marine Interiors in Whangarei. The vessel is launched on the world market at Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in 2011 with an expected completion date early 2011.

The company is just one of the 132 exhibitors from around Australia, New Zealand, China and the United States already signed up to be part of the Show.

Mr Shaw said the keen exhibitor interest which is currently surpassing last year at this time, reflects the strong sales reported by exhibitors during the 2010 event.

An exhibitor survey found respondents saw buyers and visitors from more than 20 countries including the US, Korea, India, Japan, Taiwan, the Netherlands, Germany, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and France to name some nations.

Past and current 2011 exhibitor Flexiteek Oceania confirms Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show is very important to the company’s sales and marketing. Flexiteek’s Paul Enders said that sales and leads from the 2009 event comprised around 58% of total Australian sales during the 2009 calendar year while sales leads from the 2010 Show are currently over 60% of total Australian sales. “We have enjoyed a huge increase in business in the Oceania region with staffing boosted by 300% since late 2009 and a sizeable increase in our factory area,” said Mr Enders.

In 2011, the four-day Show will be held Thursday, May 19 to Sunday, May 22 at Sanctuary Cove in Queensland, Australia from 9am to 5pm daily.

Interest in Crusing Australia at Fort Lauderdale Boat Show

November 05, 2010

Results for Australian companies at Fort Lauderdale Boat Show once again reinforces the value of attending shows such as this and promoting Australia not only as a key cruising destination but also a country that manufacturers quality, innovative and world class products.

Superyacht Australia showcased Australia as a destination and was promoting the capability of the Australian refit and repair business.

Whilst many went to the show with some trepidation given the current economic climate and high US dollar none were disappointed with the response to their products and services and all were thrilled with the interest by Superyachts in cruising in Australian waters.

The interest in Australia is overwhelming and was evidenced by the daily show newsletter that carried out a survey of the crew on the superyachts at the show the question being:
“Where do you wish the owner would take the boat?”

55.6% said the South Pacific with Australia being specifically mentioned as somewhere they definitely want to see. (Triton Today Sun FLIBS)

All who attended the show felt the show was certainly more upbeat than last year, there was far more optimism in the market and boats were actually being sold.  There were several country pavilions, Italy, France, Germany, UK, NZ and Australia. All felt the show had created a positive feel for the next 12 months.  Whilst there is no great rush of orders there are certainly sales happening and although it is agreed it will still be several years before we see the marine sector back on track it is good to see the graph going in the right direction. Most agree there will not be a return to the heady days of not having to worry where the next sale came from. Buyers are now taking a far more conservative approach and hard negotiating seems to have become the norm.  Everyone is working that much harder for the sale.  Customer service has become a key success factor and the relationship building and networking opportunities provided by these shows is critical.

Muir Winches, a long time exhibitor at the show were displaying their range of pleasure and megayacht windlass anchoring systems. Fred Mayer the Muir USA representative said “the first 2 days were above expectations and prospects certainly look improved compared to past 2 years. He said he had noticed that the refit market appeared stronger and the new build market was showing some signs of resurgence. As a result prospective new sales have improved slightly.  He said he had also seen a significant increase in commercial product enquiries.

David McQueen stated that Azzura Marine were happy to announce some additional refit work in Newcastle “The 90 MTR Sailing Yacht built by “Royal Huisman” will be visiting the Azzura Marine facility in Newcastle for the next 6 weeks to undertake a small amount of refit work”. Azzura Marine continues to expand its capabilities for refit work and Interior work in the Industry.

Joel Kmetz, a USA distributor for VEEM Propellers said “compared to last year more boat builders are looking to buy. VEEM has become popular due to the efficiency improvements it makes.  The product is now starting to sell itself and has definitely taken a good percentage of the US market. People are now asking for VEEM by name and it has become widely accepted. Fort Lauderdale is always an important show for us as it is technically the first big show for the season.”

The Australia SYBA AIMEX Stand

The Australia SYBA AIMEX Stand

Carl & Grant Amor were extolling the virtues of the show and praising the show management for the way they were delivering on their sponsorship agreement.  It was not hard to notice the presence of Aqualuma at the show with every single exhibitor wearing a lanyard with the Aqualuma brand. This coupled with the preshow promotion by the show organisers contributed to the Aqualuma stand having people 3 deep at times.   Aqualuma now have a broad range of products from underwater lights to interior lights and the quality of these products is second to none.  Aqualuma certainly were a shining light at the show and had impressed everyone with their products and their significant presence.

Captain Chris Stirling, Sydney Superyacht Services was extremely positive regarding his time at the show and was confident the show would bring business to his company.  He had spent the 5 days visiting every Superyacht at the show and said he felt there was some positive movement now in the US market.

Chris Joseland, Australian Satellite Communications said “ This is a key show for our company particularly in building relationships with our key partners and making sure Superyacht Captains are aware of the quality services we provide. He stated “this show is definitely an improvement on last year and the SYBA stand is in an excellent location to take advantage of the flow of traffic.”

Australian exhibitors at the show who were excited by the outcomes they had achieved and contacts made were:

Aqualuma, Australian Satellite Communications, Azzura Marine, Aurora Logistics, Coursemaster Autopilots, Hydrive Engineering, Maritimo, Muir Winches, Riviera, Refit Australia, Sydney Superyacht Services, Sydney Superyacht Marina, Sam Sorgiovanni Designs, VEEM Propellers.

Superyacht Base Australia (SYBA) chairman David McQueen steps down

November 01, 2010

Due to personal reasons SYBA chairman David McQueen, made the difficult decision to step down as chairman of SYBA handing over the reins to current VC Dominic White from MTU Detroit Diesel Australia.  Dominic accepted the role stating it was an honour to have worked with David through a difficult period in SYBA’s history and he perfectly understood David’s need to take some time out at this point.

David McQueen - Credit Superyacht Base Australia Limited

David McQueen - Credit Superyacht Base Australia Limited

McQueen is currently managing director of Azzura Marine and has been working in the marine industry for over 32 years. He has brought considerable experience of boat building and management to the SYBA board which he has been a member of for 5 years.

The current global financial crisis had affected everyone and the superyacht sector has certainly taken its share of pain over the past 24 months.  This had lead to a new management structure within SYBA and the SYBA board has now positioned the organisation strategically for the future.  David said, “SYBA needs a strong united focus going forward, we have a unique cruising destination which I see as a very attractive alternative to the Mediterranean and Caribbean.  SYBA needs to work closely with the Federal government to remove any barriers to superyachts cruising in Australian waters and to get the message out globally regarding what Australia has to offer, we need stronger ties with Tourism Australia. The board must steer a course that will provide a solid financial base for SYBA and more importantly a successful SuperYacht industry for Australia”

Rod Tweddle, the Executive Director of the WA/Darwin cluster and long term board member of SYBA stated “David had done an amazing job through a difficult time with SYBA and in his own life. He has done a tremendous amount for the organisation and this should not go unnoticed. “

Richard Morris another long term director of SYBA managing the Sydney Superyacht cluster also commented on behalf of himself personally and the NSW cluster. “David has done an amazing job during a very difficult period in SYBA’s life. He has overseen the changeover from the past administration to the new administration being an big advocate of bringing Maryanne Edwards and her team on to run SYBA and they are doing a fantastic job increasing the value of SYBA domestically and Internationally

These sentiments were echoed by all board members who felt David’s energy and tenacity in driving SYBA had certainly now placed them on a path where they could strategically grow the industry.  SYBA had a significant stand in Monaco and in Ft Lauderdale this week.  SYBA continues to promote the Great Southern Route a significant publication that profiles not only SYBA members but the entire South Pacific region.

McQueen said “we are all passionate about the industry and that is why we are part of SYBA.  It is important to promote the entire industry and commended SYBA CEO Maryanne Edwards for her teams support to date. David will stay on as a board member of SYBA and looked forward to working with SYBA in the future to drive their very full agenda.
