Superyachts invited to compete in Audi Hamilton Island Race Week 2012

April 26, 2012

The organisers of Audi Hamilton Island Race Week, running from August 17 to 25, invite superyachts to compete in the 29th edition of this top keelboat event in Australia. This popular race is sailed on the tropical, island-laced waters of the Whitsunday region off the coast of Queensland.

AHRW 2012

Hamilton Island sits as the centrepiece of the Whitsundays, a very special place for both cruising and racing. Within a 40-mile radius of Hamilton Island you have 74 beautiful islands, 68 of which are uninhabited and unspoiled. Then, within that same radius, you have the amazing Great Barrier Reef – one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Audi Hamilton Island Race Week is considered to be among the world’s best regattas when it comes to both the racing and the superb party scene on shore. The island – which is owned by Bob Oatley, owner of the 30-metre Sydney Hobart race record holding supermaxi yacht Wild Oats XI – has been acclaimed nationally and internationally for many of its features, including its high level of unique accommodation, the remarkable Hamilton Island Yacht Club, the championship-standard golf course and its services, including a commercial jet airport.

The regatta’s party agenda is also considered second to none. There are memory-making dinners and functions to be experienced at Hamilton Island Yacht Club and the island’s Five Star retreat, qualia; fashion parades debuting new-season ranges from some of Australia’s best designers; the legendary Moet & Chandon lunch; and supreme culinary events hosted by leading Australian chefs.

Race Week’s standing as a world class sailing regatta was well recognised when 30-year America’s Cup veteran, Tom Ehman, attended the series last year. He experienced the event from every quarter before declaring: ‘Hamilton Island Race Week is the best kept secret in the world of yachting. The organisers of any major race week should look at how Hamilton Island makes this more than a sailing event: it’s also a social and cultural happening. Through resources, imagination and hard work it has really come into its own.’

Austal increases its presence in Europe, Asia-Pacific and Middle East

April 24, 2012

In order to better serve and increase its international customer base, Austal has taken additional steps in implementing its strategy to regionalise its operations. The company has broadened its sales as well as support organisations in the key markets of Europe, Asia-Pacific and Middle East, after the acquisition of its Philippines shipyard last year.

Austal Chief Executive Officer Andrew Bellamy said the strategy would provide better service and results for customers. “Austal is a highly customer focussed and by developing our presence in key regions, we are able to spend more time with them,” he said.

“That increased level of client contact will enable us to understand their requirements even better than we have in the past. Ultimately that means we can deliver better results to them, whether that be in the ships we build, the systems we integrate or the in-service support we provide.”

Expanded European presence
Simon Smith, who has been representing Austal for nearly 13 years, has been appointed to the role of Regional Manager for Europe. He and his team are based in a new office in the United Kingdom, which was formally opened by Andrew Bellamy today.

“Austal has had a great success in Europe over the years, particularly in the ferry market, and Simon has been central to those achievements,” Mr Bellamy said.

“Now there are new opportunities including sales and support of boats for the growing offshore wind farm market. That’s an area in which we are now highly competitive through the combination of superior technology and the manufacturing capability provided by the Philippines shipyard.

Mr Bellamy said the company’s European presence had also been expanded with the introduction of a specialist in defence business development.

Guy Johnston has been appointed Regional Sales Manager – Defence for Europe. Guy brings extensive experience from the defence and IT industries, including 18 years within the BAE Systems organisation where he held a number of senior sales and marketing positions.

“We are looking to expand sales to the European naval and paramilitary market,” Mr Bellamy commented. “We feel that is definitely achievable given our success in breaking into the US defence industry and Guy brings the right skills and experience to help us realise that aim.”

Support growth anticipated
Mr Bellamy said Austal also planned to continue the growth of its European vessel support presence which began with the establishment of a Service Centre on the Strait of Gibraltar in May 2010.

“We are growing our footprint in the region meaning that the existing Service Centre in Spain will in the not too distant future be one of many we have in the region,” he said.

“Our goal is to emulate the success we have had in Spain here in the UK. We are also actively reviewing other European locations as enquiries continue to increase.”

Austal’s support business provides marine maintenance, repair and consultancy services to the commercial, defence and private markets.

Singapore office established
Austal has also established a new representative office for the Asia-Pacific region in Singapore.

“With its extensive shipping and maritime interests, and strategic location, Singapore is a natural choice from which to develop business and other ties to the region’s navies and commercial shipping operators,” Andrew Bellamy explained.

“That includes developing our existing support capabilities in response to the US Navy’s plans to rebalance toward the Asia-Pacific including the forward deployment of Littoral Combat Ships in Singapore.”

The office is headed up by Austal’s newly appointed Asia-Pacific Regional Manager, Colin Simpson. Based in the Asia Pacific Region for over 17 years, Mr Simpson has extensive experience and strong connections within the region’s marine, shipbuilding and oil and gas sectors.

New personnel in the Middle East
Austal’s capacity to service the needs of clients in the Middle East has also been expanded through the addition of experienced personnel to the company’s United Arab Emirates office.

Brett Reed has been joined by Cory Zachrisson, and they both work under the guidance of Michael McCourt, who recently took up the position of Vice President – Middle East.

Mr McCourt has previously held senior managerial roles in shipbuilding in South East Asia as well as in procurement and vessel support at Austal’s Head Office in Western Australia.

“During that time Michael was instrumental in establishing the company’s Regional Service Centres in northern Australia, Oman and Trinidad and Tobago,” Mr Bellamy said. “That experience makes him well suited to managing an effective regional office.”

Like Brett, Michael formerly served in the Royal Australian Navy meaning they bring valuable specialist engineering and operational knowledge to discussions with the region’s naval and paramilitary forces.

Both Cory and Brett transferred to the Middle East after each developing strong industry and company knowledge by spending a number of years in sales, project management and ship construction roles in Austal’s Australian operations.

McConaghy catamaran yacht MC²60: speed, luxury and elegance

April 18, 2012

Extended to smaller as well as larger models to provide the MC²50 and MC²78 yacht, the Australian yachtbuilder McConaghy originally launched its MC² yacht range with the sailing yacht MC²60. The MC²60 yacht is a beautiful semi custom high performance catamaran that will bring new standards of speed, luxury and elegance.

McConaghy luxury catamaran yacht MC²60

McConaghy luxury catamaran yacht MC²60

The MC²60 yacht was born from the vision of designing an elegant, sleek looking, high performance cruising catamaran. Speed was the key component of the design brief and therefore the MC²60 would be a lightweight catamaran built in high-tech composites.

McConaghy sailing yacht MC²60 is not just a fast cat but a luxury cat, which represents the next generation of composite, high-performance sailing catamarans.

Hull #1 will be delivered in September 2012, redefining speed as the real luxury on a sailing catamaran. The hull#2 will be delivered in December 2012.

The term “high-performance catamaran” is frequently overused. Many supposedly fast cats or performance catamarans are in reality too heavy to sail fast, as weight is the enemy onboard a multihull. At just nine tons displacement the MC²60 is a light catamaran substantially lighter than existing 55-60 ft cruising catamarans, which means the MC²60 will be a fast catamaran even in light wind conditions and upwind.

Displaying an open space minimalist design without sacrificing comfort, the MC²60 yacht is a luxury catamaran that offers four cabins in its standard design, and to accommodate individual needs this innovative fast cruising catamaran is offered on a semi custom basis.

Australian Compliant Product at the 52nd Annual BIA Melbourne Boat Show

April 18, 2012

Relaxation, adventure, adrenaline sports and competition are all provided by boating for pleasure of families and friends. Australia boasts both unique climate as well as waterways that make boating accessible to all, with waters offering some of the best fishing in the world.

Melbourne Boat Show

In fact, it is estimated that over 3 million people per year are involved with recreational fishing alone, a considerably higher proportion of the national population than in many comparable countries.

One of the more important topics being addressed by the industry at the moment is that of ‘grey imports and the relationship to boater safety and compliance´. Anyone wanting to find out more about this issue, as well as the future of the fishing industry will want to attend Australia’s next big public expo on the calendar for the year, the 2012 Melbourne Boat Show being held July 5-9, 2012 at the Melbourne Exhibition centre.

All of the marine dealers and brokers in attendance at the Show are authorised to sell specific product brands in Australia, all of which must comply with Australian standards. Product which is sold through non-authorised channels is known as a ‘grey or parallel import’.

According to Boating Industry Association of Victoria‘s Clyde Batty, grey (or parallel) imports may seem very cheap on the surface, however, it is a risky investment in the longer term both financially and in terms of safety.

“By importing a boat, PWC or engine into Australia, the buyer is taking on a number of additional liabilities. They become personally responsible for all the compliance issues associated with the product and in the event of a failure – be it safety or related to build standards or emissions – they will be the one bearing sole liability for compliance,” he said.

“The best way to avoid this situation is to buy from a reputable dealer such as those who will be at the 2012 Melbourne Boat Show” or any BIA dealer /outlet.”

A number of dealers will, as always, be showcasing new product all of which feature the latest in technological advancements and are fully compliant with Australian standards.

Sea-Doo will have their new GTR 215 on hand, featuring the manufacturer’s exclusive Intelligent Brake and Reverse (iBR) system and a supercharged engine offer playful yet predictable handling now with more power from the supercharged Rotax 4-TEC marine engine. The new GTR 215 is so fully equipped with the Sea-Doo iControl technologies including iTC and award winning iBR system allowing the rider to stop 100 feet sooner than any other watercraft.

Sea-Doo will also be introducing the all-new 2012 RXP-X 260 RS offering a new look, new hull and new ergonomic design that allows riders to aggressively lean into corners and penetrate chop better than any of its musclecraft predecessors.

With their new range of small boat AIS solutions, Australia’s GME has certainly raised the bar when it comes to performance, ease of installation and affordability with their recently released Automatic Identification Systems.

GME will be launching the GME AIS range at this year’s boat shows including the AISR120- Dual Channel AIS Receiver, AIST120- Class B AIS Transceiver and AISS120- AIS antenna splitter.

Cranbourne Boating Centre will be showcasing the newest Tournament Pleasure Boat – a new entry level model, a 5.45 meter cuddy cabin designed to get young families out on the water in style yet at a respectable price. Priced at just $36,750 this vessel comes with safety gear and registration, with Cranbourne Boating Centre offering custom options for the buyer.

Bar Crusher’s innovative Bar Tab™ trim tab system has been specifically designed for its award winning range of Australian-made, plate aluminium boats. Performing the same function as other trim tabs, the significance of the Bar Tab system is in its registered-design hinge mechanism which uses an electric actuator, doing away with the old-fashioned hydraulic system and alleviating problems caused by leaking hydraulic pumps and hoses.

The trim tabs themselves are constructed from super-strong 6mm anodised plate aluminium. A concept that came out of Bar Crusher’s R&D department, the anodised aluminium construction eliminates the problem of stainless steel trim tabs causing corrosion and paint disturbance – a common occurrence when stainless steel plates are fitted to aluminium boats.
