Yachting Pages gets feedback from captains and crew

October 05, 2012

In order to get feedback from captains as well as crew on its products and services, Yachting Pages, a top superyacht directory has recently had teams of people walking the docks along the Côte d’Azur.

As well as getting feedback on Yachting Pages, users were happy to provide reviews on other superyacht suppliers and services, both good and bad. According to the team, the results were very interesting.

Earlier this year, Yachting Pages officially launched its website, which now includes the contact details of over 12,000 superyacht businesses. However, it is more than simply a search engine; the website includes news, ports/marinas, events and reviews.

Steve Crowe, managing director of Yachting Pages explained, “The reviews are becoming a popular feature of the website. People often use our directories to find the contact details of businesses they have never used before, so to be able to see what fellow captains and crew have said about them is important to our users.

“They want to use suppliers and services that come recommended and equally, if they have received an excellent service or a poor one, they want an outlet to express those views, which they can do online; it’s a bit like the Tripadvisor for the superyacht industry.

“From talking to captains and crew at the Cannes show and Monaco show, and walking the docks in just about every marina throughout the French Riviera, we have now almost doubled the number of business reviews on our website.”

Michelle Williams, digital marketing executive who formed part of the Yachting Pages team explained, “The captains and crew were really passionate about Yachting Pages and some were also extremely animated recording stories of excellent products and services, where businesses had really gone out of their way to help.

“There were also some recollections of poor service, mainly companies being unfriendly and taking a long time to deal with enquiries; anything in between was forgotten.  Only the truly amazing and poor were recalled.”

Neil, second engineer of the 49m motor yacht Audacia, from Monaco was happy to give a five-star review of Palapa Marina and said, “We enjoyed our berth; there are lots of useful services there including the provisioning service, which we found to be one of the best in the Caribbean. They would get anything we asked for as quickly as they could. Highly recommend them!”

Birgit Winter of the 70m charter yacht Sherakahn, from Monaco gave Dolphin Wear five stars and commented, “They have a great understanding of what is needed regarding uniforms for yachts. Very helpful and creative. We would recommend their services.”

Michelle continued, “The reviews were a welcomed feature by everyone we spoke to.  In order for Yachting Pages to develop as a company, we need to ensure we continue to meet the needs of our users and advertisers, and we can only do that by talking to them directly.

“We appreciate feedback and people are happy to leave it. One person commented on the VHF numbers in the printed directories and asked if we could make them stand out more. Another captain asked for more exciting and picturesque front covers. Brilliant, all feedback is welcome.

“We also obtained 50 testimonials, including some video testimonials from happy customers.”

Second stewardess, Jenny Gatenby of the 56m charter yacht Galaxy commented, “Yachting Pages is always helpful to have in the crew mess for easy access to information. It has plenty of details on all subjects in yachting. I would say it is a must have.”

Bosun, Mark of the 30m luxury charter yacht La Mascarade explained, “Yachting Pages is a useful publication; it is good for shipyards, marinas and suppliers and when you’re up against it on charter. It is a great reference.”

Yachting Pages annual printed directory is a highly anticipated publication in the superyacht industry and its website is the online search engine for all things yachting.

Pendennis plans to enhance its superyacht facilities

March 14, 2012

Pendennis, one of the world’s leading luxury yacht builders, is planning on increasing its capabilities to move towards larger yacht construction as well as refit market. One of the plans in particular includes increasing the hight of the dry dock.

A good number of enquiries for the Pendennis Plus side of the business is received by the shipyard, which is focusing on 60+ metre ranges of new built vessels as well as refits. As reported by Pendennis, it is important for their company to continually enhance their facilities for this particular aspect of the business.

In addition to this expansion plan, the 2011 opening of the Pendennis Palma Refit office has continued to improve their clients relationships. By continuing to build upon their already world class facilities in Falmouth and expanding into Europe, Pendennis can offer an enhanced service that serves to assist a high level of client retention by providing ongoing international support.

By maintaining its relationship with its clients and the yacht captains through this facility, Pendennis can be more assured of yachts returning to Falmouth for future works.

More than 23 years in business, Pendennis shipyard boasts an excellent portfolio of 100 refit projects and 30 custom built yachts, including refits such as the Feadship superyacht Audacia, Vitters luxury yacht Dardanella and the beautiful 1929 charter yacht Dona Amelia. Newly built vessels include the 44.2m Hemisphere, the largest privately owned luxury sailing catamaran in the world and the 46m sailing yacht Christopher designed by Ron Holland.

Feadship superyacht Audacia refitted by Pendennis Shipyard in 2011

February 02, 2012

The 46.5 metre superyacht Audacia, originally built in 1987 by the prestigious luxury yacht builder Feadship, has received an upgrade by the UK based Pendennis Shipyard, last year. She was set to spend just nine weeks at the shipyard during which the primary objectives were to completely re-style the stern and install a new set of zero-speed active stabilisers alongside further stylistic improvements to the vessel. Allowing two weeks at the end to fair and paint the new works, and a further week for setting up and removing scaffolding and tenting etc, this left Pendennis with only six weeks in which to complete the project.

In order to facilitate this short build schedule Pendennis undertook extensive measuring and design work in Gibraltar before Adacia superyachts’ journey to the UK. The design brief was provided by Joanne De Guardiola Design who styled the modernised sweeping curves on the rear staircases to the aft swim deck and requested the forward fashion plate removal. Detailed instructions from the designer included inset handrail and curl around the front corner, width and angle of the stair treads, a thicker inside wall along with lowering of its height, and the outside stairwell’s softly rolled edge into the stairs as well as the elevation view of the ‘cut away’ of the stair walls.

This level of detail ensured that all plans were able to be finalised in advance enabling construction of both the grand pair of elliptical staircases and new swim platform prior to motor yacht Audacias arrival – the new swim platform had been cleverly designed to allow Pendennis to tie the new structure directly into the ship’s hull whilst remaining sympathetic to the existing Feadship Design.

Audacia yacht arrived in Falmouth on 26th January, at which point work commenced at a fantastic pace as the yacht’s structure was stripped away, cutting the existing swim platform back to the original hull.

To facilitate the short build schedule the project team devised a programme to allow trades to work alongside each other on different elements of the project. For example whilst the fabricators were taking the stern back to its original lines, the engineers were simultaneously dismantling the stabiliser system. Work commenced on preparing for the new double sweeping stairways to be fitted whilst another team worked in parallel forming the shell plating to precisely match the curves of the existing hull. At the same time the forward fashion plates on the main deck were cut out.

During the first few weeks of the project various options for a new foredeck crane were investigated as it became apparent that the existing davit crane was not able to meet the growing requirements of the yacht. The upgrade to this new hydraulic crane was also partly a stylistic decision – with the rest of Audacia eceiving a makeover it was felt that the new crane would enhance the improved aesthetics.

Additionally, it was decided that an improved air conditioning chiller plant would add to guest comfort hence the installation of a new more efficient A/C system. As is often the case when undertaking system overhauls the removal of existing equipment can reveal previously invisible issues. In luxury superyacht Audacia’s case once the existing AC system had been removed it was noticed that the underlying structure had undergone years of condensation corrosion so a substantial swath of the yacht’s structure had to be renewed and painted before the new plant could be installed.

On Monday the 4th of April, 2011, Audacia superyacht left the dry dock under her own power, just nine weeks after her arrival, with an impressive list of works completed with a very pleased Owner: “I have been extremely impressed by the professionalism shown by everyone at Pendennis during this project. The fact that Audacia left the yard within 24 hours of its originally scheduled departure with a job completed on budget and every task done according to very specific and demanding criteria speaks loudly to our complete satisfaction”.

The Owner’s designer, Joanne de Guardiola Design was also delighted with the partnership with the Pendennis team: “The outstanding finished product says it all. Audacia’s refit implemented a handsome design that updated her exterior and fitted seamlessly into her Feadship profile; it was done to the highest quality standards, on time and on budget. It was wonderful to work with Pendennis’ Naval Architects on all aspects of the new stern swim platform, stairs, fashion plates etc. Complicated design ideas were exchanged quickly and effortlessly over the internet supplemented by two in-person meetings whilst measurements, design details and a budget were completed before the yacht entered the yard. The entire Pendennis team delivered top quality professionalism. AND, Audacia looks fabulous!

Motor Yacht Audacia was delivered to her Owners before Easter, 2011, at which point she travelled down to the Mediterranean to be present at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival ahead of her busy charter season.

Motor Yacht Audacia arrives at Pendennis for 2m stern extension

February 14, 2011

Following the success of MY Illusion’s refit including a 5m stern extension in 2010, the 46.5m Feadship Audacia has just arrived at Pendennis for similar structural enhancement. The two metre extension and remodelling of the swim platform with 2 curving stairways and one stern access door will supply substantially more space providing a more accessible and useable recreational area on board. Restyling of Audacia’s stern lines, removal of the forward fashion plates and the addition of underwater lighting will also give the vessel a more contemporary finish. Pendennis developed the new structural designs in close collaboration with Joanne de Guardiola Design, Inc. who provided the overall concepts and design styling.

Alongside the structural enhancements Pendennis will improve motor yacht Audacia’s  performance through the replacement of the existing stabilizers with ’Quantum’ zero speed stabilizers. Work has commenced swiftly with a 3 month programme scheduled – the yacht is due for re-delivery in the middle of April 2011.

Mike Carr, joint MD at Pendennis, commented “The challenge with such a tight project schedule has been establishing the precise outline of the project in advance of the vessel’s arrival at the yard. Due to excellent relationships with the client we have been able to work with them since the Monaco Yacht Show to develop detailed design concepts and fully agree the full scope of work during November. As yacht Audacia was not able to make the voyage to the UK at that point due to charter commitments in both the Mediterranean and Caribbean, Pendennis pre-ordered the stabilizer package and commenced assembly of the stern module in preparation for her arrival at the end of January 2011.” Once completed this distinctive yacht is sure to make an impact upon her arrival at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

The results are due to be announced at the ceremony in London at the beginning of May. Motor Yacht Illusion‘s extensive winter refit took just over 8 months to complete and included a 3-level 5m LOA stern extension with the addition of a drop-down beach club and enhanced tender garage, thereby substantially enlarging the amount of living space on board. The work also included significant engineering work (including a complete Lloyd’s 5-year survey), deck refurbishment, improvements to the crew quarters and bridge, as well as a dramatic changes to her interior through contemporary restyling of the Owner’s study and ‘sky lounge’ by Bannenberg & Rowell Design.

The Owner of the motor yacht Illusion commented “Pendennis continually exceeded my expectations in terms of their high level of customer service, attention to detail and quality of finish, and final performance of the vessel. The list of structural improvements alongside the more traditional engineering and vessel maintenance tasks provided a considerable amount of work to be completed within one season. My team on the ground were consistently reassured by Pendennis’ professionalism during what could have conceivably been a very stressful experience. On board the finished vessel I have really enjoyed the use of the new drop down ‘Beach Club’ and this combined with the new Jacuzzi and extended sun bathing areas has really enhanced the whole Illusion experience.”

Pendennis has a busy few months ahead: SuperYacht Christopher will depart for St Barths later this month, with SY Akalam, the 105’ Barracuda Sloop previously known as B105 also due for delivery. Completion of the sailing catamaran Hemisphere is scheduled for the summer and SY Adela and Super Yacht Andromeda La Dea both arrived at the yard at the end of 2010 with refit work due to complete this spring. Most recently two motor yachts Audacia and Dardanella have arrived and are currently alongside each other in our environmentally controlled covered outer dock facility, both with refit work due for completion by the end of April. Pendennis is also pleased to announce that a substantial new 42m Feadship yacht refit project has just been signed. With this vessel due to arrive in the next couple of weeks, this will lead to a total of 8 yachts undergoing work in Falmouth at the end of February. With a very busy few months ahead the 2010-2011 winter season is proving to be one of Pendennis’ busiest ever years.
