Currently there are superb large superyachts available for charter in February and March, which happens to be the Whale Shark season in the Philippines – South East Asia; a perfect opportunity for all those diving aficionados eager to get a glance of the largest fish in the world.

Philippines

Made up of 7,107 islands, this archipelago nation and unique luxury yacht charter destination, Philippines has long been a crossroads of trade routes, with influences from everywhere from China, Japan, Malaysia, Spain, and the US overlaying the native cultures. After decades of political upheaval, the country has only recently started to become a leisure travel destination, meaning that many of its stunning natural sights are practically undeveloped with with very little tourists around.

Manila Bay

Once known as the Pearl of the Orient, the Filipino capital was decimated in World War II, resulting in a somewhat deserved reputation for lawlessness and pollution. Recently, however, the area is on the up-and-up, and the knowledgeable visitor can find things to love in and around this sprawling metropolis. Like in most cosmopolitan cities, popular foods have been refined into art forms — try traditional dishes like balut (fermented duck egg), sisig (twice-cooked and fried pig’s head), and chicken adobo, the national dish. Explore Chinatown in the Binondo area and taste delicious fusion dishes. For a true gourmet Filipino experience, head two hours north to Angeles City to Bale Dutung, where artist-writer-chef Claude Tayag occasionally cooks lunch for those who call in advance. What history does remain includes the Spanish Intramuros fort and the city’s many historic churches, like UNESCO World Heritage Site San Agustin Church. A wide variety of museums encompasses everything from Manila Contemporary to the Ayala Museum to the Mirikina Shoe Museum, which shows off Imelda Marcos’ famous collection.

Palawan Island

Considered the country’s last frontier — a Stone Age tribe was discovered living here as recently as 1978 — this large, western island is paradise for those looking for unique and unspoilt wildlife, vegetation, and natural wonders. Pass through the main town of Puerto Princesa for the delicious local seafood offered on atmospheric Rizal Avenue — try the small, dried dangitt fish that goes with Filipino breakfasts — en route to the more interesting sights inland. Visit the sprawling Tabon Caves, in which some of Southeast Asia’s oldest human remains were found. Head around to the island’s western side to the weird and beautiful St. Paul Subterranean River National Park, a five-mile-long water-filled cave that can only be toured in (strictly limited) outrigger canoes. If you’re in the mood for more traditional island pursuits, spend a day snorkeling and diving amongst Honda Bay’s quiet, coral-fringed islets. At the island’s northern tip, El Nido and the Bacuit Archipelago have long been a destination for in-the-know Filipinos searching out pristine beaches and exotic natural sights like black marble caves and tabletop corals. No superyacht trip to Palawan would be complete, however, without a stint at Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site twelve hours from Puerto Princesa, considered the best diving in the Philippines.

Palawan Island

Palawan Island

Busuanga Island

If Palawan Island is an unexplored frontier, then this small island just to the north is practically off the map. Few foreigners make it here, but those who do are rewarded not just with undisturbed natural scenery — ideal for hiking, picnicking, island-hopping, and mountain biking — but also with the Maquinit Hot Springs and some seriously impressive shipwreck diving. During World War II, a number of Japanese ships were sunk by American bombers in the relatively shallow waters around Busuanga — some are even visible to snorkelers. Continue your land exploration on the northern tip of the island at “Calauit Island,” home to the unique Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, a sprawling area of grasslands and low hills that houses indigenous animals and African wildlife like giraffes, zebras, and gazelles.

Busuanga Island

Cuyo Islands

Where most collections of pristine, relatively uninhabited tropical islands have been “discovered” and developed for tourism, the 45-island Cuyo Archipelago has somehow been skipped over, perhaps because of its remote location in the expansive Philippine archipelago. Most of its serene islets are uplifted coral reefs, making it the perfect luxury yacht charter destination for days of uninterrupted island-hopping, diving and snorkeling in the vibrantly blue-green sea, wandering powdery gold- or white-sand beaches, bird-watching, and clambering around hidden caves. One of the few volcanic islands, main Cuyo Island features the archipelago’s only real town — home to an impressive Spanish church fort built in 1680 and still in use today — and is particularly popular destination for windsurfers. Explore the islands yourself to find your favourite beaches (Pandan and Seland Islands are particularly popular), and stop in at Pamalican Island for a luxurious interlude at the world-renowned Amanpulo Resort.

Boracay (The North Side of Panay)

Touted as the next Southeast Asian hot spot, this rapidly developing, five-miles-by-one-mile slip of an island north of Panay still has another few years before it completely turns into Phuket. For now, that kind of bustling tourism is mostly restricted to the western coast’s soft, stunning, and self-descriptive White Beach, where the restaurants and cafes, resorts and spas, bars and clubs, and water sports shacks are spread along three “stations.” Station One is home to luxury resorts like Discovery Shores and Friday’s, the latter of which offers some of the best dining — complete with beachfront sunset views — on the island. In Station Three, celebrate happy hour over beach pig roasts and karaoke. For a local dining experience, venture into the outdoor D’Mall market in search of Jonah’s (super fresh) Fruit Shakes, fresh fish at family-run Smoke, and Lemon Cafe, which doesn’t look like anything special but is considered one of the best restaurants in the Philippines. Get out of White Beach to go in search of quieter coves, luxurious spa treatments at the new Shangri-La Resort & Spa and the award-winning Mandala Spa & Villas, and kite- and wind-surfing on the island’s eastern shores. Don’t miss the world-class diving on the western side, home to numerous shipwreck sites and colourful reefs.

Boracay

Bohol

Natural wonders often seem to come in sets, and it’s no different on the island of Bohol. Here, the surreal Chocolate Hills, one of the world’s smallest primates, and a spectacular coral shelf all vie for top billing, making for an impressive stay on this laid-back island. And that’s still before highlights like the 16th and 17th-century Jesuit stone churches, and the July-long Sandugo festival celebrating a 1565 blood compact between the Spanish and the Boholanos. Bizarrely named after the candy they resemble under the brown grasses of summer, the Chocolate Hills consist of at least 1,268 individual conical karst hills covering the centre of the island. Spend a day wandering the park and hiking the hills — each takes less than an hour to scale — before venturing to the Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can camp and view the tiny, rather adorable tarsier. One of the oldest land species continuously in existence and ostensibly the world’s smallest primate, the tarsier actually inspired the look of Steven Spielberg’s E.T. Dive and snorkel on the aforementioned coral shelf about 45 minutes off of the picturesque and popular Alona Beach, keeping an eye out for clown fish and barracudas as well as the colourful coral. If you’re in the area between March and June, watch for dolphins and whales.

Bohol

Bohol

Cebu

Once the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines, the city of Cebu is now the country’s second largest, a less-polluted alternative to crowded Manila. Its main attractions, however, are primarily historical, including the first cross Magellan planted in 1521 and the first Spanish fort in the Philippines, Fort San Pedro. Nearby Mactan Island, practically part of the city, with its world-class resorts — like the Shangri-La and Plantation Bay — offers a quieter alternative. Float between the islets and picturesque beaches on banca cruises, and enjoy fresh seafood cooked to order at the fishermen’s stalls in the Mactan Shrine area. Get away from the crowds by heading to the southwestern side of the island, to Moalboal and Badian, where you can hike to and swim in the impressive Kawasan Falls, go diving along the reefs, and search out quiet beaches. If you’re looking for somewhere even more secluded, head just north of Cebu Island to tiny Malapascua Island, a surprisingly sleepy, low-key destination for being so close to all this action. No real transportation exists, locals offer moped rides for free, the mangoes are absolutely delicious, and you could spend your whole day between diving, fishing, and wandering the beachfront villages.

Thailand – the best sailing superyacht destination in Asia

January 16, 2012

Thailand was chosen as the favourite sailing venue and best yacht regatta destination in Asia in a survey conducted at the 2011 Phuket King’s Cup Regatta of international sailors from around the world.

Phuket King´s Cup Regatta 2011

Phuket King´s Cup Regatta 2011

Thailand was voted as having the best sailing grounds and destinations due to an ideal geography, good weather conditions and beautiful scenery.

The sailing survey was undertaken by the Top of the Gulf Regatta in co-operation with the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, with the aim to find out sailing trends in the region, provide useful information in helping to attract more sailors to the region, and to improve facilities and services in the region.

The survey found that of the sailors who came to the 25th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, 53% were resident in Asia and 47% lived outside of Asia. Over 27% of the survey respondents were found to have been sailing in Thailand for more than 10 years, while 53% are relative newcomers – sailing in Thailand for only 1-3 years.

Thailand - the best sailing destination in Asia

Thailand - the best sailing destination in Asia

The survey found that Thailand is a popular sailing destination for international sailors, with many returning numerous times to enjoy the cruising grounds and sailing events Thailand has to offer. There are five major regattas in Thailand that local and international sailors are aware of and have participated in, including the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, Top of the Gulf Regatta, Phuket Raceweek, Samui Regatta and the Bay Regatta – Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi.

Thailand’s Andaman Coast, home of the Phuket King’s Cup, Phuket Raceweek and Bay Regatta is well established as a cruising and regatta destination. On the opposite coast, the Gulf of Thailand, the Top of the Gulf Regatta continues to grow attracting a large mixed fleet of 200+ yachts each year from youths sailing in dinghy classes, to beach catamarans, multihulls and the big boat monohull fleet.

Of those surveyed, 62% have, at some point, brought their boat to Thailand from another country. The most popular ports of entry were found to be (in order of popularity): Phuket, Samui and Pattaya. Of those yachts coming to Thailand from overseas, 60% stayed approximately one month while 40% stayed approximately six months.

Asia continues to be a popular sailing area with 32% of the respondents saying they have been sailing in Asia for more than 10 years, 14% for 4-6 years and 40% were newcomers (having sailed in Asia for only 1-3 years).

When asked how they found out about regatta’s/sailing events in Asia, 74% of respondents said “Friend/ Sailing community”, followed by 54% who said “specific event website”.

One of the aims of the survey was to find out what kind of people, and from where, attend the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, and other sailing events in Thailand. It was found that participants in the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta are truly international with 32% from Europe, 23% from Australia and New Zealand, and 20% from Asia, as well as strong participation from US, and Russia.

51m Feadship Super Yacht Double Haven´s CAT Tender Visits Sipadan Island

January 13, 2012

History was made in Sabah, Borneo as the 51m Feadship motor yacht Double Haven´s CAT tender entered the protected island of Sipadan. The historic visit was announced by the general manager of Asia Pacific Superyachts Borneo, Alvin Teh, who organised the trip after obtaining permission from the local authorities for the Double Haven superyacht’s custom build CAT tender to go into Sipadan Island. It was the first time any foreign flag vessel owner was given special diving permits for dive activities in the history of Sabah, Malaysia.

The internationally famous island of Sipadan lies five degrees north of the equator in the Sulawesi Sea (Celebes Sea). Lying 35km south of Semporna on Sabah’s mainland, it is thickly forested and surrounded by sandy beaches, formed by living corals growing on top of an extinct undersea volcano rising 600m from the seabed.  Sipadan Island was established as a bird sanctuary in 1933 and in 2004, the Government of Malaysia decreed all onsite dive resort operators move their operations out by 31 December 2004. The number of divers allowed to dive has also been limited in an effort to preserve the island’s pristine state and the luxury yacht Double Haven was the first foreign country flagged vessel to have their tender enter with a special diving permit.

The island is in the centre of the richest marine habitat in the world and within this richest of ecosystems in the heart of the Indo-Pacific basin, are 3000+ species of fish and hundreds of species of coral. Green and hawksbill turtles are abundant, gathering to mate and nest. Sipadan is well known for its unusually large numbers of green and hawksbill turtles gathering to mate and nest. It’s possible for a diver to see more than 20 turtles on each dive and also view a unique discovery, a ‘Turtle Tomb’, an underwater limestone cave with a labyrinth of tunnels and chambers that contain skeletal remains of turtles – turtles that became disoriented and drowned.

Schooling barracuda and big-eye trevally often gather in the thousands, forming spectacular formations. Other possible sightings are pelagic species such as mantas, eagle rays, scalloped hammerhead sharks and whale sharks.  Garden eels, leaf scorpion fish, mantis shrimps, fire gobies, and various pipefish are amongst the diversity and abundance of marine life that can be found, all earning Sipidan Island its reputation of being ‘one of the ten best dive locations in the world’.

Boat Asia has grown and played a central role in developing the boating industry in Singapore and the region, with a firm commitment to promoting the business of yacht dealers and their brands as well as marinas. Boat Asia 2012 is expecting an anticipated crowd over 15,000 visitors and over 100 exhibits from the Asia-Pacific, Europe, US, Middle East, and China.

“Amidst a highly volatile economic outlook, particularly in Europe, luxury yacht brands recognize that the serious growth prospects lie in still-booming Asia, where much of the real purchasing power lies,” Said Herman Ho, Managing Director of TMX Show Productions. Boat Asia has provided these brands and their dealers and distributors with the opportunity to make quality sales contacts amongst high net worth Asian clients from India, China, Singapore and South East Asia.

With a 19 years track record, Boat Asia 2011 saw a whopping USD 30 million in boat sales sealed within a four-day period. Over 10,000 quality visitors passed through the show’s gates and serious business was transacted, such as the sale of a tri-deck Horizon superyacht for over US$11 million.

In 2012, Boat Asia will once again feature stunning line ups from leading yachts brands such as Azimut, Beneteau, Chaparal, Cranchi, Fairline, Ferretti, Gulf Craft, Horizon, Leopard, Meridian, Monte Carlo, Nautor Swan, Pershing, Riva, Riviera, Robalo, Sunseeker and many others.

At the waterfront, Boat Asia 2012 will also return with its highly popular Lifestyle concept, featuring prestigious brands such as Gaggenau, Audi and Mumm Champagne in addition to a wide range on on-land exhibitors from resort operators, charter companies, clothing and fashion brands, swimwear and sports and nautical watches. Off-the-water activities will include car displays and test-drives, a nautical fashion and swimwear show at the waterfront promenade, jazz performances, wine and whisky tasting and an exclusive timepiece showcase. The event will also partner with some of the leading private members clubs in Singapore.

“Boat Asia 2012 this year have a special focus on the growing interest in luxury charters from corporations and private banks and will, for the first time, feature an exclusive luxury private yacht charter segment,” said Herman Ho of TMX Show productions, himself an avid boater. The event will also showcase the increasing use of ‘green’ technologies in yacht building and design.

Yacht enthusiasts both old and new who are keen to get their feet wet are urged to set sail for Marina at Keppel Bay from 12-15 April 2012.

55m motor yacht GALAPAGOS converted by HYS Yachts into ARK ANGEL Superyacht

January 04, 2012

It is the third time that the ´Art of Conversion´ company HYS Yachts from Philippines has done a complete make-over for the 55m luxury motor yacht Galapagos, built by the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Today known as Ark Angel superyacht, this stunning vessel was previously named Galapagos, Tiara II, and originally Taishu Maru.

In 2000 the HYS Yachts initially converted the yacht from a Japanese maritime cadet training vessel, the Taishu Maru into a luxurious go-anywhere aquatic recreational platform, the Tiara II yacht.

When the luxury yacht Tiara II was sold in 2004 and rechristened the Galapagos, her new owner turned her back to HYS in order achieve a massive upgrade which would bring her into the functional and aesthetic league of other modern expeditionary yachts.

The super yacht Galapagos was sold once again in 2009, this time to a close friend of her original owner of the Tiara II. As a previous guest aboard the yacht Tiara, the new owner knew full well the care and quality of workmanship HYS brings to their projects. So, when he began toying with the notion of another refit, the Galapagos, now renamed the Ark Angel yacht motored out of European waters on a long trans-Pacific journey “back home” to HYS refit facility.

When the yacht Ark Angel emerged from HYS yards in mid 2011, she was clad with a fully restyled body kit featuring two heli-decks (one large enough for the owner’s Agusta 109, the other for touch-and-go passenger service), a contemporary yacht stern unit, new side coamings, and an open-air sun deck.

New interior amenities include a new forward master cabin, a gourmet food preparation galley, new wheelhouse, captain’s office, and more.

As a Certified Carbon Offset Project Formula Zero should save on average 4,000 tons of CO2 per year. Plugged in to shore power she is capable of feeding 200+Mwh’s of electricity to the grid. Enough energy to make 7,000 nautical miles of Carbon Neutral voyages every year.
