46m Motor Yacht VULCAN now on water

April 09, 2013

The most challenging of projects for the well known Turkish yacht builder Vicem yachts, the 46m Motor Yacht VULCAN is now on water. The company is expanding its horizons beyond mahogany construction into high-tech composite build, with three new elegant and fast yachts, including a 46m (151ft), 35m (118ft) and a 32m (105ft) yacht for its Vulcan Line. V46 superyacht Vulcan (ex Caprice V) was launched in July 2012 and V32 Bronko I yacht was launched in November 2012.  Vicem motor yacht V32 is expected to be launched shortly, in the first semester of 2013.

In order to continue with speeds in the 20 plus knots range, Vicem decided on Cored Fiberglass construction for this series. The first step was joining forces with Dutch naval architect/designer Frank Mulder who has designed many well known fast mega-yachts worldwide. To utilize the state of the art in fiberglass yacht construction, Mulder specified Core-Cell  and Epoxy resin for the entire structure . Core-Cell has the best characteristics of any core material for “off gassing”, insuring a finished hull and superstructure that can be painted in any color. The hull and superstructure are also post-cured with large heat blankets after lamination , ensuring a fair and smooth appearance with any color.

“We want a reputation as a builder of light, beautiful and fast hulls ” says Sebahattin Hafizoglu, Vicem Yachts Founder – Chairman of the Board of Directors . “Vicem is entering the super-yacht segment with serious ambitions  and with no compromise/highest quality building materials and technologies  that compare favorably to Northern Europe Shipyards.” The 46-metre super-yacht has involved Dutch naval architect Frank Mulder and noted interior design firm Art-Line Interiors . “On a boat this size, with such high expectations of performance, the choice of the ‘right’ naval architect was an important one. Nobody has as rich an expertise as Frank Mulder does,” says Hafizoglu. Vicem are so pleased with Mulder’s work that we are also building a 32-metre and a 35-metre to his designs.”

VULCAN 46 meters M/Y VULCAN

With the 46 meter yacht VULCAN, Vicem decided to enter into the composite mega-yacht segment without making compromises. With the assistance of outstanding design firms such as Frank Mulder  for exterior and naval architecture, and Art Line  for the interiors, Vicem set out to build a 46 meter semi-displacement yacht which is lighter  and faster  than the industry standard, achieving 25 knots  as top speed, while maintaining high-efficiency  cruising and long range capability  of 4,000 Nm @ 12 knots , thus creating an extremely versatile ship.

Art-Line Studio  designed the Vulcan 46m superyacht VULCAN interior, bringing a new definition to the word luxury. A 460-ton  yacht, powered by twin 3,650 HP MTU engines , delivers efficient oceancrossing range at reduced speed. Her three decks plus Sun-deck  design provides outstanding elegance for the knowledgeable owner, and six cabins  of thrilled guests. Her signature open atrium design provides 45 feet of unbroken natural lighting, from the very top of the Sun-deck all the way down to the Lower Deck.

The main deck’s Master Suite uses every inch of this yachts’ 30 foot beam, and includes a CEO’s office and a private gym. A graceful wraparound entry way leads to an inviting Jacuzzi and an arcing fullwidth head. Farther aft is the galley, a dining area for ten, and a relaxing lounge and a spacious upper lounge area. Its impeccable construction and craftsmanship, thanks to Vicem’s internal team of 400 specialized craftsmen and the RINA/MCA Long Range classifications , make this mega yacht a very serious contender in today’s mega-yacht arena.

“The Vicem 46 Vulcan – refers Gary Smith, Vicem of Americas  – is a fantastic design and is as fast as she is beautiful. The yacht design is a build with absolutely no compromises and only the best materials are used. The first completed vessels are simply a work of art! We are excited to represent Vicem’s entry into the mega-yacht world. The Vulcan line is quickly becoming recognized as an industry leader and we are proud to be part of the team.

A world class, fast, light yacht for charter or private use, the Vulcan Series adds long range capabilities for ocean voyages together with an outstanding  and durable low maintenance exterior.

Due to the latest design and construction techniques, interior volume of VULCAN yacht has been increased  when compared to many other yachts in the same size range. Interiors are tailored to client requests  and can be fully integrated with exterior colors, styling and finishes  due to Vicem’s “total customization” attitude and superior construction techniques which allow finishing in dark colors and/or metallic painting. The Vulcan Line yachts are built in a state-of-the-art facility in Antalya , Turkey. Composite materials, applied with resin and sandwich techniques , are chosen to achieve the best possible strength-to-weight ratios .

All Vicem plants are clean, pleasant factories without unhealthy vapors  that exist in other yacht building factories that use cheaper polyester resins that are loaded with unhealthy styrene. Even the Vicem Classic and Cruiser lines utilize the more expensive and sophisticated epoxy resins in construction. Integral tank construction  was also introduced with the new Vulcan series, which provides more internal room for accommodations and the ability to carry more fuel for oceangoing trips at lower speed. Frank Mulder designed fast hulls for this Vicem Vulcan series with a fine entry for rough sea conditions that are also very fuel efficient at slow displacement speeds . RINA and/or MCA compliance and certification is always available on any Vicem Yachts. On the Vulcan series RINA  and MCA  are part of the project, which brings Vicem to a new level for offshore cruising and chartering.

Superyacht Darsea was originally launched in 2008 as the first in a highly successful custom-series of Moonen 97 displacement cruisers. Featuring handsome lines from René van der Velden and a characteristically open interior from Art-Line, Darsea’s original owners spared no expense to ensure that this superb superyacht remained in as-new condition. “With this in mind, the owners were looking for a buyer who would appreciate both the intrinsic and monetary value of such a special vessel,” says Moonen Brokerage’s Robert Drontmann. “It was our rich knowledge of the market in general and Moonen yachts in particular that enabled us find a suitable owner. Moonen Brokerage had already sold the fourth Moonen 97 yacht Alaska in 2012 and we are pleased to welcome in the New Year with this latest sales success.”

Remarkable noise and vibration results for the 42m Moonen luxury yacht SOFIA

November 26, 2012

Following three days of extensive trials, the largest custom motoryacht ever built by Moonen Shipyards, the 42-metre superyacht Sofia, has reached quite important results in terms of noise as well as vibration levels. The splendid Sofia superyacht, that also boasts a three-man submarine, reached Class 1 status within the Passenger and Crew Accommodation Comfort notation from the Lloyd’s Register rules and regulations for Special Service Craft.

This impressive technical achievement within the parameters of the SSC Rules was measured by the specialist noise and vibration testing company Intersona. The noise levels allowed for a superior stateroom on a superyacht are 50 dB. The tests recorded that Sofia superyacht’s staterooms were as low as 40 dB in some places and the sound levels never exceeded 46 dB at 12 knot cruising speed.

A similar achievement was noted in the lounge, where the measurements again showed that the sound levels were 4 to 5 dB lower then the figure required to reach Class 1 status. The noise levels were even lower in the wheelhouse, coming in at 45 dB in an area where 60 dB is still considered comfortable enough for Class 1.

The vibration tests showed an even more remarkable performance. In the staterooms and lounges a maximum vibration level of 0.3 to 0.4 mm/sec. was recorded (compared to an acceptable Class 1 level of 1.8), while the public spaces of the superyacht were measured at 0.4 (compared to an acceptable Class 1 level of 2.5).

“These low noise and vibration levels are a testimony to the engineering work that went into the design of this custom vessel as well as the phenomenal construction skills of the craftsmen here at our yard,” commented Emile Bilterijst, managing director of Moonen Shipyards. “What made these results even more special at the time they were measured was that the owner was onboard. This allowed him to hear and feel for himself the quality and comfort levels that he can expect in the years ahead.”

The owner was also delighted with the interior of the Moonen superyacht Sofia. An extraordinarily bright and open feeling is generated by the large windows and the styling by Art-Line Interiors, which features oak wood, Zabrano and Concetto marble. Executed with a custom piece of Concetto art made and supplied by Ceaser Stone in Israel, Sofia yacht’s atrium is spectacular. And the interior is a technical masterpiece too, with an integrated foil bridge and a full Kaleidoscope video server with multi-room control (including lighting, blinds and climate control) via i-Pad.

Moonen 97 motor yacht ALASKA nominated as a finalist for the ISS power 24-40m award

October 23, 2012

Delivered to her new owners earlier this year, the Moonen 97 motor yacht Alaska has been selected as one of the finalists for the ISS power 24-40m award. Built by the respected Dutch shipyard Moonen, Alaska superyacht is the fourth vessel in an amazing range of steel-hulled displacement cruisers, and her sister ship, luxury yacht Livia has also been nominated for various awards. The second in the semi-custom series, superyacht Sofia II, will be showcased at the upcoming Fort Lauderdale boat show.

The International Superyacht Society’s Design Awards are based entirely on peer review and are an annual recognition of the finest naval architecture, design, interiors, engineering and builds. In her category luxury yacht Alaska faces stiff competition from yards in Greece, Italy, the United States and the Netherlands.

“We are delighted that one of our yachts has again become a finalist for these prestigious awards,” comments Dorien Bilterijst, head of marketing at Moonen Shipyards. “Alaska showcases our ability to create irreplaceable superyachts of the highest standard for a remarkably competitive price. Her phenomenal interior from Art-Line also testifies to our ability to work with leading co-makers.

“This is a busy time for Moonen Shipyards, which in recent months has completed the Moonen 82 fast displacement motor yacht My Way and the 42-metre custom superyacht Sofia. With an explorer vessel currently under construction at the yard along with several refits, the exceptional diversity offered by Moonen is clear for all to see. And with ambitious plans on the table to extend its facilities to allow superyachts of up to 60 metres to be constructed, Moonen is looking forward to an award-winning future.”

SOFIA yacht launched by Moonen Shipyards

September 28, 2012

The well known and respected Dutch MOONEN SHIPYARDS are happy to announce the launch of the 42m motor yacht SOFIA custom constructed for a repeat client. Superyacht SOFIA is the largest luxury yacht built by Moonen to date and her special features include a three-seater submarine for even greater pleasure and entertainment while aboard. Following her sea-trials and final delivery in November, the displacement yacht will cross the Atlantic to take off on a Caribbean cruise.

The owner of this brand-new Moonen travelled to the yard in person for the launch and expressed his delight at how the specific requirements for this fully custom motoryacht had been brought to fruition. This is the third major motoryacht that he has built at Moonen and during a short acceptance speech the owner confessed he was already considering possibly ordering an even larger project sometime in the future. With plans afoot to increase the building capacity at Moonen, luxury yacht Sofia may not hold the size record for very long.

Any leading shipyard that offers owners a genuinely tailor-made superyacht must always be open to new ideas, and motor yacht Sofia serves as a testimony to the flexibility available at Moonen. Not long after construction began the owner decided to extend the yacht by a further four feet in order that she could carry a submarine capable of seating three passengers instead of the originally specified two. This involved the creation of a unique launching system which, like the rest of the superyacht, has fully met all the requirements for Lloyd’s and MCA classification. No other luxury motoryacht in this size range has a submarine that can take three people to depths of 100 metres.

Another key aspect of a high-end project such as Sofia is the way in which the yard cooperates with the other leading players involved in the superyacht build. Stolk Marimecs was responsible for the naval architecture of an elegant design by Rene van der Velden and the Moonen design team which synthesises rugged adventurous looks with modern superyacht style elements.
