66 yachts start 7th RORC Caribbean 600

February 24, 2015

Written by Zuzana Bednarova

An amazing number of 66 yachts started the 7th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600, with hundreds of race fans watching the breath-taking fleet from Fort Charlotte and Shirley Heights. Following a classic start in 15 knots of easterly trade winds, the fleet powered past the Pillars of Hercules, heading for Green Island, where they will bear away and accelerate towards the beautiful Barbuda yacht charter destination, the only mark of the 600-mile course around 11 fantastic Caribbean islands.

Lloyd Thornburg’s MOD 70 Phaedo3, with Michel Desjoyeaux and Brian Thompson on board, had a conservative start with Petro Jonker’s cruising catamaran, Quality Time crossing the line first. Phaedo3 lit the blue touch paper at Green Island, blasting through the surf at well over 30 knots. The lime-green machine reached Barbuda in less than two hours, well ahead of record pace and eight miles ahead of Peter Aschenbrenner’s Irens 63, Paradox.

In the second start, 19 yachts in IRC Two and Three started the 600-mile race. For most of the crews racing in the smaller yachts it will be three or four days before they complete the challenge. Ed Fishwick’s Sunfast 3600, Redshift, skippered by Nick Cherry, got a great start at the pin-end with Ross Applebey’s Oyster 48, Scarlet Oyster, judging the inner distance mark to perfection. Andy Middleton’s First 47.7, EH01 and Scarlet Oyster were the first yachts in IRC Two to reach Green Island and it is likely that these two will be neck-and-neck for the duration of the race. In IRC Three, Peter Scholfield’s HOD 35, Zarafa was leading on the water at Green Island. However the Two Handed team racing Louis-Marie Dussere’s JPK 10.10, Raging Bee was the leader in class after time correction.

Jonathan Bamberger’s Canadian J/145, Spitfire and Joseph Robillard’s S&S 68, Black Watch got the best start in the 15 strong fleet racing in IRC One. However, Jose Diego-Arozamena’s Farr 72 sailing yacht Maximizer, revelled in the upwind start to lead on the water at Green Island. Oyster 625, Lady Mariposa, sailed by Daniel Hardy had a great leg to Green Island as did James Blakemore’s Swan 53, Music which was leading after time correction.

The penultimate start featured 21 yachts racing in IRC Zero and Canting Keel, arguably the best fleet of offshore sailing yachts that has ever been seen in the Caribbean. A highly competitive start saw Piet Vroon’s Ker 51, Tonnerre 4, win the pin, while Ron O’Hanley’s Cookson 50, Privateer took the island shore route to perfection. Farr 100 charter yacht Leopard sailed by Christopher Bake, also had a great start, controlling the boats to leeward heading for the Pillars of Hercules.

Hap Fauth’s Maxi 72 luxury yacht Bella Mente had a sensational first leg of the race, rounding Green Island first out of the IRC Zero class, but all eyes were on George David’s sailing yacht Rambler 88, as the powerful sled turned on the after burners. George David’s new speed-machine could well break his own monohull course record; at Barbuda Rambler 88 was almost five miles ahead of the ghost track of the record set by superyacht Rambler 100.

Bella Mente, Hap Fauth's ©Tim Wright/Photoaction.com

Two of the world’s most magnificent schooners were the last class to start. Charter yacht Athos and super yacht Adela started their match race in the pre-start and there is no doubt that the battle of the titans will continue throughout the race. Athos won the pre-start in some style, chasing Adela downwind and away from the line, before rounding up onto the breeze and crossing the line over a boat length ahead of her rival. However, Adela was far better suited to the beat up to Green Island and led as the two schooners continued their rivalry towards Barbuda.

Note: Liquid, Pamala C Baldwin’s J/122 and Quality Time, Petro Jonker’s Du Toit 51 catamaran retired at the start following boat damage. All of the crew are well.

Falmouth Harbour Marina, Catamaran Marina and Antigua Yacht Club Marina now providing only ultra-low sulphur fuel to yachts

December 01, 2014

Written by Zuzana Bednarova

The Antigua and Barbuda Marine Association (ABMA) is delighted to announce that Falmouth Harbour Marina, Catamaran Marina, as well as Antigua Yacht Club Marina are now offering only ultra-low sulphur fuel to yachts. This is as a result of the joint efforts of the luxury yacht marinas and the ABMA in raising the issue of the fuel, previously supplied having a sulphur content higher than the legal requirements in Europe and, from the 1st January 2015, in the USA.

The last year saw ongoing discussions with the ABMA and West Indies Oil Company regarding meeting the specific requirements of the marinas. West Indies Oil Company has been instrumental in engineering a change in the fuel supply to meet European regulatory requirements. CEO Gregory Georges has confirmed: “Following a request from the marinas it was clear that West Indies Oil needed to deliver the new lower sulphur content fuel at the most competitive price, so that on arrival from their Atlantic Crossings or before leaving for other destinations yachts can re-fuel adequately while ensuring that the fuel is below the legal sulphur content requirements in other jurisdictions.”

Mr Georges goes on to say: “West Indies Oil Company is perfectly positioned to respond to such a request. An innovative solution was achieved by leveraging the existing fuel supply infrastructure which, in turn, negated the need for excessive financial investment. Further, we are proud to be adding another product line to our compliment of products and services.”

General Manager of Falmouth Habour Marina and ABMA Director Bobby Reis says: “We are delighted that West Indies Oil has been able to deliver a solution and in fact has been able to provide us with the lowest possible sulphur content level available on the market. This will help us to safeguard the vital yachting sector by ensuring that the availability of this fuel means that yachts do not have to leave Antigua for another island before they wish to, just to refuel.”

The ABMA is delighted that the fuel situation has been rectified before the upcoming Antigua Charter Yacht Show which takes place in less than two weeks and heralds the beginning of the very important international yachting season in Antigua and Barbuda bringing with it enormous economic benefits to the islands.

Charter yachts to benefit from 4G LTE broadband in Antigua and Barbuda

August 06, 2012

Written by Chelsea Smith

Superyachts and visiting charter yachts in Antigua and Barbuda will benefit from a multi-billion programme to improve broadband and connectivity. The government of Antigua & Barbuda and Digicel are partnering on a collaborative project, involving significant investment from Digicel, that will provide yachts with faster broadband than in any yacht charter destination, almost anywhere else on earth!

Launch presentation for the deployment of cutting-edge Fourth Generation Long Term Evolution (4G LTE) broadband in Antigua and Barbuda

This will make the small twin island state and popular superyacht cruising ground, the most technically advanced in the Caribbean and more advanced than all of Europe!

The Government-Assisted Technology Endeavour (GATE) will include solutions for superyachts, which communications integrator e3 Systems is helping to implement. e3 Systems will advise on positioning the land mast location and the design of yacht specific service contracts.

Roger Horner, Group Managing Director of e3 Systems Group and Mark Smith, the manager of e3 Systems Antigua attended the launch presentation for the deployment of cutting-edge Fourth Generation Long Term Evolution (4G LTE).

The launch presentation, held in the Admiral Lord Nelson’s Ballroom at the Sandals Grande Resort, was given by Victor Corcoran, CEO of Digicel Antigua and Barbuda and the Honourable Dr Edmond A. Mansoor, Minister of State for Information, Broadcasting, Telecommunications, Science and Technology with remarks made by the Minister of Finance the Honourable Harold E Lovell and the Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Baldwin Spencer.

Currently Ericsson is installing the new technology around the island. There will be a mast that provides excellent, dedicated, coverage to the whole of English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour including Turtle Bay and surrounding areas. The Government has made the coverage for yachting, resorts and hotels an important feature in their strategy.

4G is wireless broadband received by using a USB pen drive attached to your laptop or via a 4G router incorporating a wireless access point.

Every yacht, sail or motor of any size will be able to have access to a real world speed of 10 Mbps enabling a new world of video calling, streaming, and data transfer that in the past has only be available to the extremely large yachts using VSAT at enormous expense.

4G LTE is a version of 4G that has been adopted in the USA by AT&T and Verizon as their technology of choice and is 3 to 4 times faster than other implementations of 4G. It is hundreds of times faster than 3G.

The plan is for 85% coverage in the first phase with coverage continuing to improve to a full 100% coverage based on demand. All the yachting areas will be covered in the first phase.

The planning and development of 4G LTE in Antigua has been of major interest to e3 Systems as they are a specialist communications integrator for yachts and they have an office in Antigua.

“Our involvement with Digicel and the Government starts with advice on the location of the mast to make sure the service covers all the locations needed. We are also designing the service contract specifically for yachts, based on our experience of what yachts need, demand and use. The contracts will be very different to the land based contracts. Primarily they will only be for the length of the yachting season.

The Digicel service will roam on the Digicel networks of the other islands but only on HSPA+ service levels. HSPA+ service is effectively a super 3G service and will not have the performance that 4G LTE has in Antigua.”

“We plan to eliminate the chance of “Bill Shock” by offering roaming for an inexpensive fixed fee on the other Digicel networks during the winter yachting season of 2012 to 2013. Roaming will be limited to about ten other islands but this will be extended as the HSPA+ technology gets installed around the other islands. Currently there are no plans to install 4G LTE in any of the other islands in the Caribbean.”

Antigua has always been popular as a great place to come and enjoy a luxury yacht charter boasting safe anchorages, the best yacht services and friendly people but now it will be the ONLY place to base and run a yacht from during the winter yachting Caribbean season.

We will announce details of the developments and more contract details as they happen over the next months starting at the Monaco Yacht Show and with a big launch together with Digicel and the Antigua and Barbuda Government at the 51st Antigua Charter Show in early December.

Data Contracts will be available from all e3 offices and e3 Partners together with routers and USB pen drives.
