Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2013: My Song, Salperton and Bequia Yachts win after Race Two

June 06, 2013

The lighter wind on Day One of the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2013 changed on Day 2, building gradually during the day to provide the fleet of 21 sailing superyachts with an ideal day on the water. The event is organised by Boat International Media as well as the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

For Day Two’s race, the race committee reversed the starting sequence sending the fastest rated yacht off first. With 10 knots of breeze blowing across the start line from the southeast, the medium wind rating band was selected and Peter Craig – Principle Race Officer for the event – picked three similar courses for the three classes. It was a great course, sending the fleet downwind across the start line, through bomb alley – the channel between the main island of Sardinia and the islands of Caprera and La Maddalena – before heading round the back of La Maddalena and beating to the finish line off Porto Cervo.

By the time the fleet had got to the entrance to bomb alley, the wind had risen to around 15 knots, and in Class A superyacht Visione had a lead of nearly eight minutes over sailing yacht Nilaya. Luxury yacht Saudade – who had made a good recovery from an early hiccup – was holding third on the water.

Approaching the northern tip of La Maddalena the fleet split in two, with the faster Class A yachts rounding the Barrettinelli islands and the yachts in Class B and C effectively cutting the corner. The wind had increased to 18 knots, and with La Maddalena offering good protection the flat water made for exceptional sailing conditions.

P2 had made good progress and held the lead on the water in Class B, but the 45m charter yacht Salperton was showing a great turn of speed rounding second. She was followed by the Oyster superyacht Sarafin and 49.7m Zefira yacht, with a gap back to Unfurled, Timoneer, sailing yacht Karibu, sailing yacht Cape Arrow, Day One’s Class C winner Bequia, Drumfire, Virtuelle – who had her rating tweaked overnight – and the Alloy Yachts 37m luxury yacht Genevieve.

With the yachts theoretically stretching out, rather than enjoying the concertina effect that you get when the slower yachts start first, it was difficult to see who would actually take the glory when the handicaps had been applied. Visione certainly blasted her way around the course to take line honours, and it was some time before the next yacht made it across the finish line.

When the provisional results came in, the 25.4m luxury yacht My Song claimed her second bullet on corrected time in Class A, while Salperton yacht’s charge meant she took victory in Class B, ahead of the Southern Wind superyacht Cape Arrow and Zefira, who suffered a torn spinnaker during the race. In Class C, the 27m yawl Bequia held on to take her second win of the regatta, putting her in a great position for the final two days of racing.

‘It was a really good day,’ said Tom Davies, captain of charter yacht Salperton, back at the dock. ‘There were a lot of tactics today; we had a good start, and were the only one of the early starters to have the kite up as we crossed the start line so we probably gained half a minute right there. We made a very good call rounding Monaci, as we went high so we could soak down to drop the kite.’

For Nilaya yacht, a second place in Class A was a good improvement on Day One’s fourth. ‘It went really well today,’ her captain Tom Weiss enthused. ‘It’s good if we get real upwind or downwind legs – the bigger boats take off on the reaches with their bigger waterlines. The yacht sails really well in more breeze, and it makes a big difference starting third and having clear air – so deciding to alternate the start sequence makes the regatta fairer. It was a perfect day, with perfect conditions – everyone on board is happy with the way we sailed.’

Racing continues tomorrow with the first start scheduled at 12:00 and easterly winds of 10-12 knots forecast.

Dubois Cup 2013: Day 3, Race 2

June 05, 2013

This year’s 4th edition of the Dubois Cup saw the 45-metre charter yacht Salperton take line honours for Race 2 and the third-place 37m Alloy sailing yacht Genevieve win the Cup on aggregate time. A perfect day of sailing concluded the event, with all eight competing vessels under blue skies and just under 15 knots of wind – ideal superyacht racing weather. Charter yacht Nostromo placed third and the 50m Fitzroy yacht Zefira finished second over all.

“We really have a tremendous crew,” Barry Houghton, owner of charter yacht Salperton said after the yacht picked her way up through the field from seventh to a clear lead out front in first. With Olympic gold-medallist Shirley Robertson on the helm and Ian Walker in from the Volvo Ocean Race as tactician, Salperton’s crew were quick and worked hard on every maneuver to ensure the win. “I cannot think of anything we did wrong today,” Robertson said as she addressed the crew post-race. “It all worked out for us, weather-wise, but we really didn’t make a mistake. Well done, everyone!”

Over on superyacht Genevieve, Captain Tony Pullar and owner Tom Saylak were exuberant, but modest in their win. “It wasn’t the best conditions for us – it was a lot lighter than Sunday,” Pullar said. “But we did our best and the crew really worked hard to get us to where we are.”

“This performance is way above average for us,” Saylak said. “We’re really pleased to have won the Cup. And I think it’s important to point out that none of our crew are paid: They’re all friends and colleagues and people who have been associated with the boat from the beginning, so that makes it really special for us. If we’re here in two years, we’ll absolutely come back and do this regatta again.”

It’s hard to overstate how ideal the weather and sailing conditions were: Several owners were heard to remark that Monday’s sailing was the best day of racing they’d ever done. With spirits high and lovely evening weather, the fleet crews gathered on the terrace at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, where the prize-giving ceremony got underway. Every yacht was recognized for their participation in a jovial, casual ceremony that underscored the intimacy of the entire regatta. These are competitors in the most familial sense: Good cheer was always going to be the order of the day.

Luxury yacht Genevieve was presented with the Dubois Cup, a beautiful carbon-fibre sail trophy designed by Dubois Naval Architects; the entire crew took to the stage for a rousing cheer.

Superyacht Zefira was recognized by the YCCS for being the top-placed yacht from the Club. With all the trophies handed out, Ed Dubois offered his thoughts on the regatta.

“I think it’s somehow poetic justice that Salperton, who retired from yesterday’s race because they thought it was getting very marginal out there, came back and won the race today,” Dubois said. “I think it was actually a very brave thing to do.”

After the trophy presentation the party began in earnest. Hosted by the YCCS and organized by the Dubois team, the night’s entertainment were The It Girls, whose lively performance of burlesque-tinged yet family-friendly classics and pop covers had everyone dancing, including a few softshoe owners, who clearly very much enjoyed themselves.

Superlatives come thick and fast after events like these, and so it can be difficult to summarize, but it can surely be said that the wide smiles and genuine camaraderie of owners and crew seemed to achieve that wonderfully elusive state of perfection. As one owner put it on Tuesday morning, “No one who was there will ever forget Dubois Cup 2013.”

Sailing yacht GENEVIEVE wins Dubois Cup 2013

June 04, 2013

Organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) as well as Dubois Naval Architects, the fourth edition of the Dubois Cup concluded yesterday, on June 3, with the victory of sailing yacht Genevieve. Luxury superyacht Genevieve is a 37-metre sloop, owned by Tom Saylak and constructed by Alloy Yachts.

The 50-metre superyacht Zefira, built by Fitzroy Yachts and flying the YCCS burgee took second place ahead of the 30-metre charter yacht Nostromo with Olympic champion Jesper Bank calling tactics. The event, held from 1st to 3rd June, saw 14 Dubois-designed sailing yachts gather in Porto Cervo, seven of which competed over two days of regattas on the waters of the Costa Smeralda.

Barry Houghton’s 45 metre charter yacht Salperton – also flying the YCCS burgee and with Olympic champion Shirley Robertson at the helm – won day two at the conclusion of a race sailed under a sizzling sun and against the backdrop of the granite islands of the La Maddalena archipelago with around 8 to 12 knots of easterly breeze. Second place went to Zefira, with America’s Cup sailor Flavio Favini aboard, while third place for Genevieve, coupled with a bullet on day one, was enough to take her to overall victory.

“I’ve been racing in Porto Cervo for 20 years,” commented Saylack. “The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda does a really great job, the coastline is gorgeous and you never know what you’re going to get. That’s a part of racing and that’s part of what makes this one of my favourite places in the world to sail.”

At the conclusion of racing owners, crews and guests gathered at the YCCS Clubhouse for the prizegiving ceremony in which each member of the fleet received a special award in addition to the top three yachts. The evening continued with a party for everyone who participated in this biennial event characterized by an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendly competition.

The next edition of the Dubois Cup is scheduled for June 2015, however the YCCS sporting calendar continues immediately with the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta from 4th to 8th June. Twenty-one sailing giants ranging from 24 to 50 metres now line the quays of Porto Cervo Marina with racing scheduled to start at 12 midday on Wednesday 5th June.

Dubois Cup 2013: Day 1

June 02, 2013

Under perfect skies and with promising winds, the fourth Dubois Cup officially kicked off at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, positioned in the beautiful yacht charter destination – Porto Cervo in Sardinia. A total number of 14 Dubois-designed sailing yachts as well as two Dubois motor yachts have come to participate in this invitational event, which hosts some of the finest sailing superyachts in the world, competing for the Cup.

“Through this event, we are supporting the whole industry, and indeed, the whole industry is supporting us,” Ed Dubois said from the deck of the yacht club, overlooking the gathering fleet. “We rely very much on the yacht builders and the suppliers to help us throw this event and to showcase what we do, and to make this really a wonderful family affair.”

The list of sponsors for the event is extensive and impressive: Feadship, Fitzroy Yachts, Pendennis, Royal Huisman, Aylesford International, North Sails, Reckmann, Rondal, Southern Spars, Alloy Yachts, Doyle, Gateley, Hall Spars, Pantaenius, Skynet Aviation Group, Sturge Taylor and Vitters Shipyard.

A spectacular fleet of Dubois-designed yachts attracts a crowd anywhere, and seems ideally suited to the glamour and exclusivity of Porto Cervo. Some yachts have come for the first time, including the newly-delivered, Oyster-built 100-foot sailing yacht Sarafin, and her 125 foot sister, superyacht Twilight. The Australian-built luxury yacht Alcanara, delivered in 2009, and charter yacht Salperton, a regular on the regatta circuit, make their first appearances at the Dubois Cup. Also racing is Timoneer yacht, the current holder of the Dubois Cup, who won here in Sardinia two years ago.

“I’ve been in this business for over thirty years now, and this event relies on the patronage of a family of owners we’re used to being with regularly,” Ed says. “We have one owner here for whom we’re now working on the eighth project, and we have two three-project clients and a handful of two-boat clients. We see this event continuing every two years for as long as the industry is happy to support it and for as long as our owners continue to enjoy it!”

As the stern lines came ashore and the yachts aligned themselves for a few days’ competition, the crews came to inspect their friendly rivals, owners walk the pier viewing the design direction for other projects, and potential new clients inspect the handiwork of the yards. It’s a weekend to relax, to race for fun, and to enjoy the camaraderie that such an intimate regatta affords.

Racing commences at 12:00 today.

The Dubois Cup, held biennially and now in its fourth edition, will see a fleet of 14 sailing yachts and two motor yachts designed by the UK’s renowned Dubois Naval Architects gather on the quays of Porto Cervo Marina. Several of the yachts will be spectating while those competing will include defending champion sailing yacht Timoneer, a 44.8-metre ketch, as well as the 30 metre charter yacht Nostromo which placed second in the 2011 edition. The largest of the Dubois yachts taking to the starting line will be the 51.7 metre superyacht Prana, built by Alloy Yachts of New Zealand, while the latest design from the Dubois stable, the 38 metre luxury yacht Twilight – launched earlier this year – will be following racing and soaking up the atmosphere as a spectator.

The spectacle doesn’t finish here, however, and the busy YCCS calendar immediately continues with 21 superyachts enrolled in the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta. The event, which has been taking place annually since 2008, has fast become a fixture on the Mediterranean racing circuit and this year’s participating yachts count an average length of over 34 metres.

The fleet represents the cream of international nautical design and construction and hails from some of the world’s top shipyards including Fitzroy of New Zealand, Oyster of the UK, Perini Navi of Italy, Royal Huisman of Holland and Southern Wind of South Africa.

Some of the most imposing participants include the 45m charter yacht Salperton, winner of the Caribbean edition of the Loro Piana regatta in March of this year, and the Wally 148 yacht Saudade, also 45 metres in length. The colossus of the fleet is however the award-winning, ultra-modern superyacht Zefira at just under 50 metres.

“Following an excellent start to our sailing calendar at our Caribbean base in Virgin Gorda, we are delighted to welcome such a remarkable fleet of superyachts to Porto Cervo,” commented YCCS Commodore Riccardo Bonadeo. “It is great to see so many yachts return year after year, as a testament to the quality of our regattas and hospitality, and also to welcome numerous new participants. A special thanks obviously goes to our sponsors and supporters who allow us to remain at the forefront of the international yachting scene.”

During a gala evening attended by a distinguished guest list of superyacht owners, their families, friends and luminaries of the superyacht industry, news broadcaster Natasha Kaplinsky presented the prized silver Neptune awards to the owners of the finest sail and motor yachts delivered in 2012.

Seventeen coveted Neptunes and three Judges’ Commendation prizes, custom made for the occasion by Baccarat, were awarded to the winners on the night.

Firstly Southern Spars would like to congratulate Alloy Yachts and Dubois Naval Architecture for their collaborated effort with the 47m superyacht Loretta Anne, winning the Motor Yacht of the Year 2013.

Southern Spars is very proud to once again be involved with many of the World Superyacht Awardees, supplying spars for luxury yacht Rainbow – Sailing Superyacht of the Year in 39m+ range, charter yacht Endeavour – Refitted Sailing yacht of the year, superyacht Hamilton – Judges special award for performance and Quintessential yacht – Judges special award for Catamarans.

Rainbow – Sailing Superyacht of the Year in 39m+ range

“Rainbow’s Southern Spars rig and rigging package goes hand in hand with her sleek lines. She utilises grand prix technology on her rig and rigging that some of the worlds most advanced maxis sport, including the current Volvo 70’s” says Project Manager Olivier Marthe. Her Southern Spars high modulus mast came out of the same mould as Endeavour, at 55.5m it is a little taller than Endeavour and is also equipped with the latest EC6 continuous rigging.

Endeavour – Refitted Sailing yacht of the year

Originally built in 1934 and reduced to being a complete wreck in the 1980s, luxury charter yacht Endeavour’s 2011 re-launch marked the completion of an extensive 18-month refit at Yachting Developments’ yard based in Hobsonville, Auckland. The Yachting Developments’ team has taken extreme care throughout the refit to preserve as much of the vessel as practical while taking advantage of 21st century sailing systems, such as a carbon fibre mast and EC6 carbon fibre rigging package from Southern Spars for enhanced performance and improved functionality.

Endeavour yacht’s future performance will benefit from the significant weight savings – an incredible 900kg on the boom, and three tonne on the rig and rigging from her previous rig – achieved by the Southern Spars’ Custom Projects team based in Avondale, Auckland.

Southern Spars would like to congratulate all of the boat yards, designers and suppliers involved in this years awards.

Double awards for Dubois-designed luxury yacht LORETTA ANNE at World Superyacht Awards 2013

May 08, 2013

Designed by the prestigious UK design firm Dubois Naval Architects, the beautiful 47-metre motor yacht Loretta Anne was named ‘Motoryacht of the Year’ at the recent World Superyacht Awards, presented by Boat International Media. In addition, luxury yacht Loretta Anne won in the category of ‘Raised Pilothouse Semi-displacement Motor Yacht’.

Built by Alloy Yachts, New Zealand, the Dubois-designed Loretta Anne yacht is the 22nd large Dubois-designed/Alloy-built yacht to launch and she takes full advantage of the combined experience and the first-rate build quality of the shipyard.

As the designers, Dubois has succeeded in combining excellent seakeeping with an efficient hull and attractive, timeless looks.

As is usual with all Dubois designs, Dubois was responsible for the naval architecture and outboard styling of superyacht Loretta Anne. Donald Starkey Designs finished the interior in the ‘Bahamas beach house’ style requested by the owner.

Loretta Anne is the 11th motoryacht of over 30 metres that Dubois has designed. Probably known primarily as sailboat designers, to win this ‘Best Motor Yacht’ award is particularly gratifying. Dubois delights in the challenge of marrying seaworthiness with practicality and good looks in its motoryacht designs; the same priorities that the studio applies to their wind driven sisters.

Interesting features include the vertical bridge screen of superyacht Loretta Anne, which is both practical and contemporary and, unusually for a two and a half deck yacht, the galley is on the main deck.

The owner and friends, who were in attendance at the Awards Ceremony, were overjoyed with the recognition the Loretta Anne yacht received. An experienced owner, she was heavily involved in the design and features for the latest superyacht Loretta Anne.
