Riviera Yachts reports strong international sales at the Riviera Festival and Sanctuary Cove Boat Show

June 08, 2012

The four days of the Riviera Festival as well as Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show brought strong international interest for the latest yachts from Riviera with 50 per cent of retail sales coming from overseas customers, as recently announced by the largest and most awarded yacht manufacturer in Australia.

Two new sales were secured for the Belize 52 Motoryacht

Riviera achieved more than AUD$10 million in retail sales as a direct result of the Festival and Sanctuary Cove boat shows including a new 63 Enclosed Flybridge bound for Puerto Rico, a 45 Enclosed Flybridge bound for Phuket in Thailand, a 5000 Sport Yacht to Florida, a 4400 Sport Yacht to Sydney and several ‘off the plan’ orders for the new 49 Enclosed Flybridge, which was announced at the opening of the shows and is due for release mid-2013.

Riviera’s director of brand and communications Stephen Milne said the results from the Riviera Festival and Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show was extremely pleasing.

“So far we have signed $10.3 million in retail sales for several of our newest models and we also secured two Belize 52 Motoryacht sales.  Again these are both retail sold through our dealers to a client in Perth and a client in Puerto Rico,” Mr Milne said.

“We had a significant number of overseas Riviera owners, prospective clients and dealers drawn to Australia for our Festival, and thus the international sales, which was 50 per cent of our total sales, was a very pleasing result.

“Right now our dealers are very busy following up quality enquiries from the shows with trade boats being valued and new boats being specified and quoted.

“Our customised Riviera 5800 Sport Yacht certainly wowed many of the show patrons who appreciated the design, layout and features, with many saying that it was the best boat at the show.  It was again pleasing to have our owners from all around the country onboard the boat and sharing their Syndication experience with others.”

Princess Yachts Australia’s head office in Hope Island Resort Marina was transformed into an intimate alfresco concert venue for the night. Guests enjoyed the finest local cuisine specially prepared by chef Piers Hasler and sipped Möet while enjoying an acoustic performance of some of Jon Stevens well known hits.

After the show Jon mingled with the audience and guests were invited to view Porsche’s stunning new 911 convertible and were also treated to an exclusive display of Calleija’s stunning collection of rare Argyle Australian pink diamonds.

Guests were later invited to visit Princess at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show, where two new models were making their Australian debut, to view the yachts on display. Making their first appearance at the show was the Princess 60 yacht and the new motor yacht Princess V39, which has received high praise since her launch in January.

“Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show is an important event for our business and this year we staged an exclusive event for our owners on the opening night of the show, then inviting our guests to join us to inspect our range over the remaining days”, said Princess Yachts Australia Dealer Principal Alan Paterson. “We place a lot of importance and focus on partnering with key brands such as Porsche and Calleija, which compliment our brand and allow us to offer exclusive experiences for our owners.”

Gold Coast City Council teamed up with AIMEX to bring in key international buyers

June 04, 2012

In order to look at the show and meet the high number of international visitors as well as buyers who had been brought in by the council to look at the capability of manufacturers on the Gold Coast, the Mayor of the Gold Coast Tom Tate arrived at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show on Friday.

The Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) had worked with the Australian International Marine Export Group (AIMEX) to bring in key international buyers who had indicated they were keen to look at distributing more Australian products in global markets. A number of local manufactures met with these buyers during the ASMEX conference and the 4 days of the Sanctuary Cove International Boat show with extremely positive results.  The international buyers and distributors were from Taiwan, Brazil, USA, Netherlands, UAE, and NZ.

Gold Coast City Council Economic Development and Tourism Committee Chair, Councillor Jan Grew, said the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show was an important event for local marine manufacturers.

“This event is integral to the Gold Coast marine industry and each year, the boat show plays an important role in attracting visitors to the city and showcasing the outstanding facilities and marine infrastructure that exists here,” Cr Grew said.

“Gold Coast City Council was delighted to be working in partnership with AIMEX to support the attendance of international buyers from a range of key export markets.”

“While they are here, the buyers also met with many of our local businesses and had the opportunity to tour our city courtesy of Business Gold Coast.”

MaryAnne Edwards AIMEX CEO said “The Mayor and the GCCC should be congratulated for this initiative and that a full report will be completed over the next 4 weeks detailing the sales and outcomes of this project.”

Edwards said “this type of support is the most practical support the council can be giving the marine sector in this economy with the dollar making it hard to compete and the high cost of manufacturing reducing margins.  Bringing buyers in provides many of the smaller manufacturers, who cannot afford to attend international trade shows or even the time to leave their business, an amazing opportunity.”

Global demand within the marine sector is down and traditional markets for Australian product have slowed although it does seem we are seeing more movement in the USA which has always been a big market for Australian manufacturers.

“Bringing real buyers and distributors in who already have key markets and channels for Australian products is the best injection the council could give local manufacturers” said Aqualuma Marine Lighting Director Carl Amor.

A number of key Gold Coast manufacturers have already made direct sales as a result of the Gold Coast City Council approving this project.  Positive sales and ongoing relationships have already been reported from Aqualuma, Air Berth Boat Lifts and Superior Jetties, with other companies like Riviera, Marine Tuft, Lightwave Yachts, Marine Engineering Consultants, Marine Technologies (M-Tech), and several others all in discussions with one or more of the buyers.

Edwards stated “With initiatives like this the sales are not always instant but the relationships have started and we will see significant economic returns for the Gold Coast from this project.”

Edwards estimated immediate returns were likely around $450k with longer term returns to be well in excess of $2 million dollars over the next 12 months.

Joining Princess clients from across Australia were guests from partners Porsche Centre Gold Coast and Calleija Jewellers, with Porsche presenting their stunning new 911 convertible and Calleija displaying their latest collection of Argyle Pink Diamonds.

Jon Stevens performed an acoustic set of his hit songs and then joined the crowd for photographs and a meet and greet after his show. Guests were treated to a selection of exceptional local produce prepared by leading Bespoke Chef Piers Hasler, whilst Moet flowed for the evening, set to the stunning backdrop of the new Princess yachts displayed on the marina.

Princess debuted their new Princess 60 yacht and the sporty V39 yacht at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show, with both boats impressing the large show crowds. Princess, Porsche and Calleija clients and guests were invited to inspect the boats at the show whilst enjoying light refreshments in the relaxed setting of the floating Princess corporate facility.

Judging of the 2012 Australian Marine Industry Awards

May 30, 2012

In order to decide on the Award Winners, the judging panel for the 2012 Australian Marine Export and Superyacht Awards gathered during the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, which has taken place last week.

2012 Australian Marine Industry Awards Panel

2012 Australian Marine Industry Awards Panel

The Australian International Marine Export Group (AIMEX) has been facilitating the process of the 2012 Australian Marine Industry Export Awards and the newly introduced Australian Superyacht Awards.

Applications closed on Friday 4th May and the number of applications had increased from 2011 which was a fine effort given the challenging times encountered in 2011.

Judging was conducted on Saturday 28th May during Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Judges Ian Murray, CEO of the Australian Export Institute, John Savage of J.J Savage & Sons, Ken Evans, previously Mercury Marine and currently working in the industry as a consultant, Dugald Anthony from Austrade and Barry Jenkins, a well-known marine industry personality all agreed there was a high calibre of applications received across the seven categories, allowing a fair playing field for all companies.

2012 Award categories are: ‘Most Innovative Marine Industry Exported Product or Service”, “Marine Industry Export Champion”, “Best Marine Industry Export Performance (SMALL EXPORTER / MEDIUM EXPORTER / LARGE EXPORTER)”, “Best Marine Industry Export Marketing Strategy”, “2011 Marine Industry Exporter of the Year”, “2012 Superyacht Industry Business of the Year” and “Superyacht Industry Champion”.

Applications were received from: Aqualuma Marine Lighting, Aurora Yacht Logistics, Australian Superyacht Crew Recruitment & Training, Crew Pacific, Finscan, GME, Hanseatic Marine, Hydrive Engineering, Imaginocean Yacht Design, Marine Technologies, MTU, Muir, Multipanel, Polyflex, Release & Retrieve Boatloatch, Rivergate Marina & Shipyard, Riviera, Ronstan, Sailfish, SOS Marine, Stebercraft, Stormy Australia and VEEM.

The Award Winners will be announced during the Club Marine and AIMEX Networking Function to be held at Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, Sydney, on August 2nd 2012 (first night of the Sydney International Boat Show).

This event is the annual networking event for AIMEX members and is always an event high on the industry agenda.

These Awards provide a platform for recognition of Australia’s significant position when it comes to marine export companies who showcase innovation, quality and excellence. With the high Australian dollar, high costs of manufacturing and a downturn in the global market innovation is one of the biggest competitive advantages Australian businesses have.

Sponsors of the 2012 Awards scheme include Major Sponsors; Club Marine and Supporters; Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show and the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education.

The annual Club Marine and AIMEX Awards night is an invitation only event. Invites will be distributed closer to the event date. For further information about the Awards or Function night, please contact AIMEX marketing@aimex.asn.au

2012 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show a Great Success

May 28, 2012

Closing down yesterday on May 27, the 24th edition of the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show made happy both organisers as well as exhibitors, with visitor numbers up 1.6%, coming in at 37,094 during the four days. But importantly, out in force were genuine buyers.

Brett Thurley at Pacific Motor Yachts, dealer for Clipper, Jeanneau and Prestige, was happy to report he sold yachts at the show. “But I gauge a boat show on response on the Monday. Sometimes people are really keen on the weekend, then pull back the week after. But we have been busy doing sea trails and the leads we have are serious.”

Thurley continued: “We ramped up our effort this year to have the largest presence on the water and launch Jeanneau and Prestige. The response and rewards were beyond our expectations. SCIBS provided the show and the visitors. It was a far greater result than we could have hoped for. I applaud the management of the show for their efforts to generate and invest in media activity to support the show. To me it’s the premiere boat show for Australia.”

John Hogan, CEO at Superior Jetties labelled this year’s event “the best we’ve ever done”.

SCIBS 2012 a Great Success

SCIBS 2012 a Great Success

“We increased our efforts this year: we launched new products and that combined excitement turned in to real sales, not just leads. We do have more than 100 leads, but for us, we signed 14 contracts, including the biggest lift in the Sunstream range that was launched at the show.”

Integrity’s Brett Flanagan is “over the moon” with year’s results. “We sold four boats, all our stock boats, collected money on them, and sold another one yesterday afternoon, which is under construction. And we are in the process of negotiating two more. And we haven’t even been through our list of prospects! It was our best show ever, no doubt about that.”

An exhibitor for 21 years, David Tanner from AMI Group said the sales are already coming in.“It was certainly the best show in five years. The people were very high quality and that’s what exhibitors want. They seemed to be prepared to spend. There was a great local feel about it, wonderful street atmosphere and friendliness.”

Tanner who says he gauges ROI by post-show orders, judged the show as a great one by the orders he received first thing this morning. “That’s unusual, even in the hey-day. To receive two big orders at 8am on the day after the show is exceptional. The fact is, the sales results are there.”

“Dollars don’t lie,” said one veteran exhibitor, thrilled that he had doubled his target for this year’s show, hitting a 24-year record cash and card total.

Horizon Yachts at SCIBS 2012

“You can’t fudge these figures,” said Steven Quan at Dometic/Seabreeze Industries, distributor of Dometic, Crusair, Sealand and Sovereign products and accessories, who have been at every show for 24 years. “We have made more at this show than any other, topping $100,000 in sales during the four days. We are very happy indeed.”

From Palm Beach Motor Yachts, Mark Richards stated “We had a fantastic show! I am really happy. A lot of people had been negative about it, but it went well for us. We have two sea trials today and another one tomorrow. We had people from New Zealand and interstate. I love this show!”

Josh Metz, dealership director at Fairline Queensland said the show was “extremely successful” for the UK brand.

“We sold the Fairline Targa 58, the newly delivered model for this show. We are working on another three to four, which is fantastic! For us it was excellent.”

Andy Young from Boating Syndication Australia sold six shares in its Belize motor yacht during the show. “Yes, we had a great show. We exceeded our expectations. We had a good product and the people were great. We have 17 tests this week and we deem this year’s SCIBS an overwhelming success!”

Peter Collins from Arvor Boats said interest in the Weekender was non-stop and the leads were top quality.

“We put a fair effort in to marketing the new model five months prior, and we expected a fair crowd. It felt like there were more people around this year, even on the Friday. And we have many trials booked in for this week and we will be heading back up to Brisbane to conduct these. This is unprecedented from any show. There were heaps of people here from interstate. We are confident we will have good sales.”

Peter Crossley from Marine OEM Supply, representing Arctic Steel and Tides Marine said: “It was fantastic! A much better show than last year. We were in an excellent position in the Superyacht Pavilion. We had people from all over the place approaching us and hundreds of leads. If we can convert one quarter of these enquiries, we will be wrapped.”

Crossley continued: “It was disappointing that some manufacturers and builders didn’t come, but I am sure they will be back next year.”

Melissa Yeomans from Deckhardware was thrilled with the “genuine buyers” at this year’s event. “Our leads are many times better than for the past two years. We had a lot of interest and request for quotes from owner/builders from interstate. That’s the bonus of SCIBS – you get a lot of interstate visitors which we really noticed this year. We are going back to Sydney with 12 quotes, which is awesome. If we get half of those through, I will be very happy.”

Ian Douglas Mooloolaba Yacht Brokers, representing Jeanneau sail said the general feeling from the public was that the show was excellent. “We were happy with all of it. We had a great show. I would have to say a lot stronger than we expected. We are pricing four boats this week and expect to have four contracts by the end of the week. The DS44 was outstanding and everybody was talking about it. We are pleased we went to the trouble of bringing it here.”

Riviera Yachts at SCIBS 2012

Riviera Yachts at SCIBS 2012

Dani Limback, from Chaparral Australia said the show wassurprisingly strong, with interest on the bigger boats and wake boats.“We’re really happy. We have excellent leads – and we don’t take any old leads. We have 120 strong leads and a lot of good feedback. We are organising sea trials from now until Sunday and we have a dozen of those so far. We will be coming back next year for sure.”

Riviera Syndication’s John Russell said this year’s show was “much better than last year”.

“We have sold three shares in the 58 Sports Yacht located in Sydney and two in the 58 here. That’s it for the moment, but we had four full books of leads and demonstrations to do. We are confident we are going to better that. It was great to see so many happy people at the boat show enjoying the best of the boating lifestyle.”

Maritimo’s Luke Durman reported a positive show all round. “One of the dealers told us it was the best SCIBS in four years. We were happy with numbers and general enquiries,” he said. “We had new products on show and great feedback on them. It was a good quality crowd, some faces we recognised and some new faces. In terms of sales, we expect over the next two weeks to take at least five or six orders.”

The new Maritimo 58 was one of the busiest boats on show and according to feedback, visitors were impressed. Likewise with the new Mustang 43. “We’ve spent a lot of time on its development, so it was good to hear the positive feedback.”

Powerdive’s Aaron Hawke, from Perth, was thrilled with his company’s ROI. “We had great days every day, selling out of product. You can’t complain about that! It was worth every cent in marketing and getting our brand out there.”

Florian Caroller from Ensign Boat Brokers said the company went “better than expected”.

“We had one sale of the First 40 and many, many good leads for the Sense 43 and enquiries on the Sense 50. The new Oceanic has also generated a lot of interest. We were able to show the brochures and the boat has some of the same attributes of the Sense. We have many quotes and leads to follow up. We are happy. This week will be busy and we will be closing deals.”

Russell Wright at Horizon Motor Yachts Australia is “delighted” with results. “We were extremely happy with the numbers we had on our stand. It surpassed what we had expected. Whilst there were no direct impulse sales we were introduced to many potential buyers and progressed many of our current leads closer to a sale. It was also encouraging that fewer people were commenting on the current difficult economic times.

“Our new release Horizon E54 was a winner and we are confident to get at least 3 orders of this model after demos and we have two clients close on our new Horizon E70.”

Will Sangster, Director of Sales at Mercury Marine commented on the “enquiry from genuine customers” “From our stand point, that’s important – quality over quantity. The people we saw were absolutely genuine and in the market.”

Define Watches’ Peter Petzold exhibited his prestige timepieces in the MarineBusiness-World.com pavilion and said the show was “very good” for both sales and leads. “The promotion with Gold FM worked extremely well for us. We have sold a few watches and most importantly, we have started interest in our brands.”

According to Petzold, feedback from visitors was that they have never seen anything like the range of German watches he had on show and that they were glad to see a broader range of exhibitors. “It certainly was a good show for us.”

Marc Hall from United Motor Yachts admits that they were late to sign up as exhibitors, and that while the Superyacht Pavilion was quiet for them, “the leads were strong”.

“It was really flag waving exercise for us, since we only opened the doors three weeks ago. We were happy with the show and will be back in 2013, with boats on the water doing boat sales.”

Launching its innovative 950, Seawind sales were very strong. “We sold two 950s and one of the new 1000XL2, the first time it has been on display,” said Brent Vaughan. “We also have hundreds of leads. I think we will have at least one sale this week, as well as three or so strong leads in coming weeks. We are very pleased, especially considering the economy. It has been very slow. This is the best sales activity we’ve had all year.”

Mark Elkington from Multihull Solutions referred to SCIBS as “the best multihull show in Australia” and that this year’s event was “excellent for sales and leads”.

“We secured three contracts on boats at the show and are undertaking sea trials and quotes, hoping to get a similar volume of orders. We have plenty to do. We are very happy. It was a very good show for us. Buyers are noticeably showing a lot of signs of being nervous about committing, but they are there.”

Mark Leach from Raymarine said the show had “its vibe back” and commented on the great atmosphere. “But for us, the important thing is quality enquiry and passing leads on to dealers. We think our dealers will be really pleased with this year.”

Damien Weber from Navico was exhibiting with a brand new stand showcasing brands B&G, Simrad and Lowrance. “The results will be seen by our dealers in the next two to three weeks,” he said, “But we think it was a very strong show. There is a great ambience and traffic through the pavilion. Outside on the marinas, we noticed Simrad has about three times as much share as last year. That is the measure for us. Our brands have really gained traction.”

First time exhibitor, Stand Up Surf Co did great sales at the show, said Kath Philp. “We sold seven boards, which we didn’t expect, and got some very big leads for distribution which we haven’t been able to crack to date, which we also hadn’t expected. The show exposed our brand to a whole new market and we got extremely positive feedback. We will absolutely be back next year!”

Clive Raharuhi from Concept Models not only sold out of his show stock of remote-controlled boats, his store nearby was cleared out by visitors on their way home from SCIBS. “We were in the best spot,” he said referring to the new “Adrenaline Area”, where JetLev and Jet Surf demonstrations were held. “We must have sold close to 100 units, from $75 to $800. It was a great show and people were really upbeat.”

Sue Thomson, Boat Show General Manager said “These results are fantastic! It’s pleasing to hear exhibitors had a great show. We worked hard ramping up marketing and promotion this year and it’s very rewarding when exhibitors leave the show with these kinds of results. In these tough times, these results are encouraging. Planning is already underway for the 25th Anniversary show next year.”

Winson Chow, Mulpha Chief Operating Officer said “Mulpha congratulates exhibitors on their success. As we head towards the significant milestone of the 25th Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, 23 to 26 May 2013, we are looking forward to an even stronger event. It is excellent to cap off this year’s show with such positive results.”

2012 Sanctuary Cove Boat Show: Rower Andrew Abrahams beats the world record

May 27, 2012

2012 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show visitors have seen Andrew Abrahams, a popular rower, beat the world record attempt at the Million Meter Row. Breaking the record in the freezing solitude of 1am Sunday morning, he has managed to smash it by a massive 8 hours, 47 minutes and 10 seconds.

Rower Andrew Abrahams at SCIBS 2012

Rower Andrew Abrahams at SCIBS 2012

The record was previously held by Nigel Gower, from the UK.

For his herculean efforts, Andrew wins “a shirt and a pair of shorts” and the title of course from the makers of his Concept2 rowing machine, which he calls “Elvis”.

“But the real point of it all is to raise funds for seriously ill kids,” he said this morning, enjoying his first cup of coffee in five days.

“I feel good, pretty tired,” he added. “The first thing I am going to do is lie face down on the bed. I am hungry but it’s hard to eat. I have flavour fatigue from eating so much during the row.”

Still at the boat show on the final day, Sunday 27 May, Andrew is taking challenges this morning from staff and exhibitors wanting to stretch their muscles. He said that after the Million Meter Row, he needs to row for an hour a day and gradually wind it back to ensure his muscles recover.”

His team has not yet counted the funds raised and pledged, but Andrew said people have been extremely generous. “Everybody has been very supportive. They told me they saw me on ‘Sunrise’ and came in to support us.”

Andrew is raising funds through Lions and Couee Community. Through the Lions Club of Rochedale Springwood and Couee Community, Andrew is able to guarantee that all profits from this campaign will go directly the cause, and not be wasted in overhead costs and wages of other charities. They will purchase much needed equipment for children in need, and approach charities for wish lists.

The Lions are all 100% volunteers and proud to be involved. Couee Community has the same beliefs and are focused on helping wherever it’s needed in the community.

Next up on the list is the Woodvale Challenge Atlantic Rowing Race 2012. Andrew is a co-founder of the successful Big W Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride, a three day and 350km long event raising funds to support research into children’s cancer. Since its launch in 1999, the event has raised more than $2.1 million for childhood cancer.

Then the big one at the end of 2013, when Andrew takes on the Atlantic in his kayak on the “Ultimate Test of Strength and Endurance”, a 5000km race in open ocean, from La Gomera, Canary Islands to English Harbour, Antigua.

In the next 18 months, Andrew Abrahams will have to master the art of dodging shipping and prepare himself for the many physical and mental challenges he will face along the way.

“I am constantly reminded of the pain and suffering that the children and their families go through when sickness or injury has struck a family member, so I use that energy to help me find a way to help. Now when things get tough, as I prepare myself for the Ultimate Test of Strength and Endurance, I say to myself with a smile on my face, I’m rowing the Atlantic,” he said.

On this once in a lifetime challenge, which begins December 2013, Andrew will be pushed beyond his mental and physical limits as he faces sharks and whales, extreme temperatures, powerful storms and 30ft+ waves. He will have to adjust to the stark living conditions on board: constant motion, no bathroom facilities, limited cooking ability and desalinated water.

Sanctuary Cove Boat Show 2012: Day 2 – Great Sales, Great Turnout

May 26, 2012

Friday saw the continuous trend in sales, strong leads as well as a distinct buzz around the marina, pavilions and throughout the Village. Despite the rain, the Day 2 of the 24th Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show started with Seven’s ‘Sunrise’ program broadcasting the 3-hour show live with the best background of yachts and crowds awaiting opening time.

From exhibitors, the message is clear: great crowds, quality buyers, the show is delivering better than expected results.

“We were very happy with Thursday,” said Brett Thurley from Pacific Motor Yachts.“It felt much busier than last year. People were out researching and buying. Then Friday wasbusy, despite the rain. We have a lot of great leads.”
