´Women on Water´ program at Sanctuary Boat Show 2011

November 21, 2011

To appeal to a broader spectrum of visitors and involve the growing number of women in the marine industry, the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show  2011 program, known as ´Women on Water´ initiated plenty of new ideas dedicated to ladies only.

Sanctuary logo

These ancillary events were aimed at making boating fun and female-friendly. The program kicked off with an invitation-only ladies’ lunch, featuring key note speaker Carla Demaria, President of Monte Carlo Yachts and Board member of Beneteau, to lend her charisma and clout to the occasion.

On her first visit to Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show – a coup for the boat show team – Carla commented at the industry breakfast and in interviews with the media that Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show “could hold its place in the top level trade and consumer shows” she had experienced in her 30 years in the marine industry.

Other activities included skipper training, fashion parades and the exceptionally popular “High Tea on the High Seas” which conveyed the camaraderie and fresh air and sunshine unique to the boating lifestyle to a new segment of prospective customers.

The rationale behind the Women on Water program is in line with boat shows and other major events the world over who acknowledge this fact: 80% of household spending is determined by women – including mortgage lenders, health funds, clothing, restaurants and discretionary spend on holidays, cars and yachts.

For 2012, women will be well catered to, with a host of fabulous events in the pipeline, all marine-themed and created to deliver a snapshot of the boating lifestyle to these discerning consumers and inspire them to bring their families and friends to the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.

2011 Sanctuary Cove Boat Show Survey´s winner Geoff Folliott

October 31, 2011

Geoff Folliott of Brisbane, a Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show regular, professional skipper and avid boatie, has won the $14,000 prize package for finishing 2011 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show Survey – the first of its kind in Australia.

Geoffrey Folliott

2011 Sanctuary Cove Boat Show Survey Winner Geoffrey Folliott

Geoffrey has attended the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show “almost every year” since its early days, both as a visitor, an exhibitor and “helping a mate bump in a few boats one year”.

He says he was motivated to take the time to complete the survey online since “boat shows are vital for keeping the boating dream alive”.
“Boat Shows are the life blood of the industry and really inspire boaties, whether they’re planning or dreaming.”

But showcasing the yachting lifestyle is not all about massive yachts and exotic locations.
“Boat Shows are there to get people excited at every level of boating, from savouring the views over a glass of wine, to buying a small dinghy for your kids, or taking a charter, or eventually buying a cruising yacht to explore the world. Events need to inspire people to get up from the computer, get out of the house and enjoy the water.”

Geoff speaks from experience. He spent five seasons working as a superyacht Captain in Europe, as well as instructing and training hundreds of others over the years.
Now a father of two – Harrison aged four and a half and Amelia, two – he and his wife, Michelle, are very much involved in the yachting lifestyle.

“I am a Captain by profession, I teach yachting, sail training and I am an RYA Yacht Master Examiner. I also do some private skippering now and then. I am very busy!’

Not too busy to get out on the water, enjoying many family days on board a small sailing dinghy and lately, other people’s yachts. “We have spent many weekends out on the Broadwater on a RIB. It will be great to have our own!”

He is referring to the compact, sturdy and stylish Zodiac Cadet RIB – the 7.3’ yacht tender that comes complete with Honda 5hp engine. The other prizes include 6 x RFD Cyclone 150N jackets and 1 Kannad 406 EPIRB, a $500 voucher from Australian made nautical leisure wear Shock & Oar, 6 x Liquid Image Goggles, the world’s only swim mask with an integrated waterproof digital camera from Active Out There, 6 pairs of polarised sunglasses from BarzOptics and 4 pairs of Sperry yacht shoes.

The major prize, one which will thrill the young parents, is a trip for two to Hayman Great Barrier Reef, along with Airfares and transfers to Hayman Island. The package includes 3 nights accommodation for 2 people in a fabulous Pool Deluxe Room overlooking the sublime Hayman Pool and tropical gardens, daily buffet breakfast in Azure fronting the Hayman Beach and access to plenty of activities and experiences on this superlative island resort.

“We are very excited,” says Geoffrey, expressing his thanks to all sponsors involved, TetraMedia who composed and conducted the survey, and the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show team.
“I answered the survey online after going to Sanctuary Cove this year, because as both a visitor and an exhibitor, I know these are the two markets that boat show organisers need to juggle in their planning. It’s a great show, we never miss it. It has an impressive reputation to live up to year after year.

“As one of the country’s major events, coming up to 24th anniversary, there’s a lot of pressure on organisers to deliver. I hope my feedback assists them and exhibitors to build on it for a bigger and better event.”
Geoffrey’s comments about boat shows, Sanctuary Cove and others around the country and around the world that he has attended, were insightful and echoed the feedback of many show-goers.

“There is a price point on people’s relaxation time,” he observes. “Even though it must get more costly every year to put on a show, potential visitors and exhibitors will only pay so much to attend. Boat Shows need to appeal to the broader community and inspire people to grab their families and pop down to Sanctuary Cove for the afternoon. That’s how spontaneous people are these days, with so many commitments and distractions to soak up their time.”
The prize package presentation to Geoffrey, Michelle and family, will be held at Sanctuary Cove during early November.

2011 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show Brings Quality Buyers

May 22, 2011

International exhibitors have claimed the quality of prospective buyers at the 23rd Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show was the best they have seen in 10 years.

Mulpha Executive General Manager Alison Quinn said the strong support for this year’s Show has buoyed us as we plan forward for next year’s Show leading to the quarter century celebration in 2013.

“The feedback from exhibitors underpins this Show as a ‘must attend’ event for the marine industry.”

Grand Banks Singapore dealer James Purves, who has been coming to the Show for a decade, was impressed by the quality of the visitors.

At close of business, confirmed sales included two multi-million dollar Princess motor yachts – a 72 sold to a Sydney buyer and a 52 to a Gold Coast buyer.  The total value of the sale was around $A7 million.

Mark Richards who manufactures Palm Beach Motor Yachts reported the sale of two of the just-released 52s to current Palm Beach buyers who have upgraded to the new model.

Further positive comments from the 384 exhibitors included Riviera’s Stephen Milne who said: “We have had a fantastic show, we sold 10 boats which have a retail value of some $A15 million ranging in size from a number of 43 Flybridges, a 5000 Sports Yacht, two 5800 Sport Yachts and three of the brand-new 53 Flybridge model,” released in a world launch at Sanctuary Cove.

Mr Milne added he had three full days of sea trials next week and he was confident the company would exceed last year’s sales. He added sales were made to buyers in Sydney, Adelaide, South Africa, New Zealand and Puerto Rico.

“We are exceedingly happy about this year’s Show and we are cracking the champagne.”

Brett Flanagan reported the sale of two 350 Integrity Pilothouse boats – one to a walk-in couple who paid for the boat on the spot.

“We have never really sold a boat at a show before this Show, and we have six or seven sea trials booked for next week,” he said.

Ensign Ship Brokers also reported a walk-in sale on the first day of the Show with a firm order for a Beneteau Oceanis 40.

According to Clipper Motoryachts Australian Managing Director Brett Thurley, the past eight weeks have been the strongest for the company in new boat sales since taking over Australian distribution two years ago.

“We have commitments on three boats at the Show already and the strong ongoing interest will give us a lot of work to do in the weeks after the Show.”

Flying Fish Hovercraft sold three hovercraft at the Show. “I have to say the quality of the enquiries is exceptional,” said the company’s Emma Pullen.

“The big news for us is that a visitor to the Show from New Zealand is considering the purchase of 10 craft for an events business and has departed the Show for an immediate demonstration at our own events business in Caboolture – that would be a very significant sale for us in expanding the HoverCross brand internationally,” she said.

Julie Balzano from Enterprise Florida in the US managed a delegation of Florida companies exhibiting at the Show for the first time. “The overall consensus has been very positive,” she commented.

One of the five manufacturers was Florida company, Armstrong Nautical Products. Vice President Russ Sedlack said there were a lot of discerning customers at the Show.

“We don’t normally sell off the stand but people insisted they buy our product off the stand,” said Mr Sedlack. The centre pole telescopic boarding ladders and ladders for RIBs proved popular. He answered inquiries from international visitors from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Canada, Japan and China.

Nautical Structures President Robert Bolline exhibited at Sanctuary Cove for the first time with the Florida delegation.

“We are very optimistic to build business here and we have found the boat builders to be very open-minded and open to discuss business.”

American company Westport Shipyard was at the Show in the Superyacht Australia pavilion. The company came to Sanctuary Cove for the first time as it has clients in Australia owning a 34m and 40m vessel. The company builds composite motoryachts and claims to be the largest yacht builder in North America.

“It is the first time at the Show…. We also do Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Singapore, Cannes and Monaco. We consider this a very good venue for international audiences,” said Vice President Philip Purcell.

By 4pm on Sunday, visitor numbers were tallied at 36,504 – an 8.4% drop from 2010.

Exhibitor Outer Reef Yachts President and CEO Jeff Druek said the company did 25 to 28 shows a year.

“We had many positive leads. Every Show has been the same – the volume of visitors is down but the quality is superior.”

“The strength of the Australian dollar has driven interest. We find we are very well received. Sanctuary Cove to us is a ‘go to’ venue,” said Mr Druek.

Australian companies also enjoyed sales. Seawind’s sales and marketing manager Brett Vaughan said the company made a number of sales of its new Seawind 1000XL2.

“Interest in the larger Seawinds – the 1160 and flagship 1250 and the Corsair C37 that debuted at this Show is also strong and we anticipate sales in the days after the Show,” he said.

Traditionally Maritimo does not reveal sales figures from shows. However Maritimo’s Director of Marketing Luke Durman acknowledged strong interest in Maritimo’s M48 Series II, A55 Aegean and C53 Sports Cabriolet models.

Sanctuary Cove’s event also saw the relaunch of the iconic Mustang brand.

“The Mustang 32 sold well as expected,” said Mr Durman. The Show also saw the unveiling of a Mustang 50, which proved to be a real surprise package to the Mustang brand loyalists.

Australasian Marine Imports also had a successful show, with the sale of a Hampton 680 Endurance and an Alaskan 57 Pilothouse along with an Alaska 46 Flybridge which are built in China.

Club Marine is a sponsor of Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Media partners include BoatPoint, Channel Seven, 4KQ, Trade a Boat and 92.5 Gold FM. Maritime Safety Queensland is a government supporter. Hawker Pacific and Barz Optics are supporters.

Sanctuary Cove Show 2011 celebrates Women on Water

March 18, 2011

The 23rd Show, staged at Sanctuary Cove in Queensland, Australia, will host a series of events and activities to celebrate Women on Water. The increasing role of women in the marine industry is acknowledged by Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show with a new series of activities – Women on Water.

This includes seminars, fashion parades, skipper training aimed at women by a female skipper and female-focused lunches with entertainment and giveaways. Show dates are Thursday, May 19 to Sunday, May 22 from 9am to 5pm daily.

“The Boston Consulting Group has found women control $US20 trillion in consumer spending around the world and the figure is growing annually. The study found women take care of household finances in many instances,” she said. Other research indicates disposable incomes are highest among women aged 45 to 54 years in the US and in the next decade, US women will control two-thirds of the consumer wealth in that country.

“Our Women on Water program recognises the role of women in decision making – whether it be expenditure on a new boat or the trend of women to set up their own businesses.

“Each year we try to keep the Show relevant to both the marine industry and those interested to be involved with boating. This initiative reflects changing market trends,” she said. 2011 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show Reveals Plans

February 17, 2011

A world record attempt, marine seminars and VIP packages are some of the plans announced for the 2011 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show at an official launch today.

“For the first time, Sanctuary Cove welcomes Marine Queensland as host to a daily schedule of fishing and marine talks and seminars,” she said. Industry and angling experts will present talks and educational sessions on topics encompassing fishing, boat maintenance, trailer boat operation and wider issues in the marine sector. These will be staged at the Marine Village Theatre and in a second venue within the waterfront Marine Village.

In another first, Queensland Surf Lifesaver, Andrew Abrahams, will attempt to break the World Record of one million metres in a rowing machine over five and a half days. His efforts will support the Starlight Foundation, a children’s charity. The Show appearance is a lead-up to his December 2011 marathon attempt to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, a distance of some 2700nm (5000km).

“These initiatives along with the introduction of VIP packages will add further interest for visitors to the Show,” said Ms Thomson.  VIP packages introduced in 2011 will include five-star accommodation, helicopter transfers, boat show entry and a partner pampering package per couple.

Marketed as the place ‘Where the Marine Business Does Business’, Sanctuary Cove will feature President Monte Carlo Yachts S.p.A Carla Demaria as guest speaker at the Australian Marine Industry breakfast staged at the Show on Friday, May 20.  Ms Demaria founded Monte Carlo Yachts S.p.A in Italy which launched its first model, the Monte Carlo Yachts 76, last September in Europe.

The 53 Enclosed Flybridge is a new generation of luxury, technology and personal customisation and Riviera has already received 12 orders ‘off the plan’ from enthusiasts in Australia and the US.

Designed from the keel up using Riviera’s Uni-Graphics NX three dimensional CAD software system, the new 53 has been developed in-house by the Riviera design team after nearly two years of detailed consultation with boat owners across the globe.

The result is a vessel of considerable internal volume, allowing Riviera’s designers to create unprecedented living spaces, elegant amenities and unrivalled performance.

“The new 53 Flybridge retains the distinctive Riviera styling but incorporates a new generation of technology and comfort,” says concept design manager Neil McCabe.

“The 53 combines contemporary thinking with traditional elements. There is a lot of boat for its length.”

The new 53 has three cabins and two bathrooms and is the first Riviera flybridge in the 50 foot range to offer a full-beam master stateroom, with king-size bed and large ensuite.  Port and starboard alarmed opening port holes bring light and fresh air below.

The 53 is the first Riviera in this size bracket to offer an enclosed flybridge with spacious seating for a party of 10. Flybridge access is via an internal staircase. The 53 is also the first Riviera to offer the flexibility of choice with a range of different pod drive and engine plant configurations. This new model has been entirely designed around these proven and efficient drives.

The new 61 series II with a raft of ground breaking engineering and design enhancements is a luxurious long range and highly capable offshore vessel, which is available in either enclosed or open configuration and has taken many popular design cues from the fleet’s prestigious flagship, the Riviera 70.

Riviera has already taken four forward orders of the new 61, which comes in either a three or four cabin option.

In the master suite a queen sized bed aligned fore and aft now takes advantage of the large port lights, while a host of cleverly engineered features make storage of luggage and clothing easy.

Comprising fixed laminated safety glass and opening portholes handcrafted from stainless steel and wired to the boat’s ignition alarm system, the newly designed hull windows bring a flood of light and fresh air into the main cabin to port and into one of two guest cabins to starboard, depending upon which option is chosen by the owner. The 61 Series II features three bathrooms with the starboard day head also benefiting from this fixed port light.

The 61 Series II features a galley positioned aft and adjacent to the saloon.  The galley is equipped with European appliances and is separated from the large sociable cockpit by a hinged awning window and a large tinted glass door which when opened brings the outside in.

The cockpit is an extension of the live-aboard space inside and doubles as an optional alfresco mezzanine dining area with table and fore and aft facing seating.

Overlooking the cockpit is the spacious enclosed flybridge, featuring forward helm and aft docking station.  The open flybridge option features an aft helm with a U-shaped lounge around a convertible table with a settee opposite.

The enclosed flybridge features a hinged awning window and glass door that bolt open to bring outdoors in and unify the space.  Wrap around seating to port features folding arm rests with functional storage underneath and a drop down dinette table.  This is a truly luxurious sky lounge.

To starboard there is a wet bar with bottle and glass storage. A 26 inch flatscreen TV is wall mounted above the wet bar.  A draw fridge is located under the base of the pedestal – mounted crew seat to starboard which fronts the forward dash.

The upholstered wrap around forward helm can accommodate up to three 12 inch displays.  Air-conditioning ducts can be vented against the windscreen to demist the glass in humid conditions. Opening side windows feature positive seals and deep drainage slots.  Night-time privacy can be assured with retractable venetian blinds. And throughout the 61 energy saving LED lighting illuminates this social space with a warm ambiance.

There are two alternative flybridge designs available, one is an enclosed flybridge with a forward helm and aft docking station and the other is an open flybridge with a helm positioned aft.  The open flybridge features a U-shaped lounge around a convertible table with a settee opposite.

Riviera’s director of brand and communication Stephen Milne said last year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show was a strong show for Riviera with the successful launch of the new 43 Open Flybridge.

“We have sold 25 new 43s since the launch last year, which is a significant achievement,” Mr Milne said.

“This year Riviera is launching the new 61 Series II and we already have four orders which are under construction so we expect this model will excite the market.”

As one of the shows founding exhibitors, Riviera enjoys a 23 year history at Sanctuary Cove and will be in their familiar location at the beginning of F Marina.

Riviera’s floating display will feature 11 of the company’s award-winning designs from the sport yacht range, the 3600, 4400, 5000 and 5800; the 43 Offshore Express; and from the flybridge range, the 38, 43 Open Flybridge, 45, 47 Enclosed Flybridge, 51 Enclosed Flybridge and the 61 series II.

Mr Milne said Riviera was proud to host the world launch of the 53 and 61 Series II Flybridge at one of Australia’s premier boat shows.

“We have received a lot of interest in this new model and have several potential buyers travelling from overseas and interstate to view the 53 and 61 Series II at the show followed by a sea trial immediately after the show.”

Riviera will be among 400 exhibitors at this year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show which will be held from May 20-23 and draws more than 40,000 boating enthusiasts from Australia, India, Taiwan, China, Korea, United Arab Emirates, Italy, Malaysia, Singapore, the UK, the US, New Zealand, Spain and the Philippines.

Riviera offers 20 different models from 36 to 85 feet across four model series Flybridge, Sport Yacht, Offshore Express and Motor Yachts.

SYBA CEO MaryAnne Edwards said: “This is an exciting initiative SYBA have been working on for some months. It is designed to profile the Australian Superyacht Industry and provide an excellent platform for the industry both in Australia and globally to network, share ideas, understand issues and work with key industry stakeholders to look at ways to grow the Australian Superyacht sector. The conference will also provide an overview of key global markets and in particular how Australia, NZAsia and the Pacific can work together to drive more business for the region.”

Edwards advised that Barry Jenkins had been appointed conference chairman and he was excited by the prospect of hosting this inaugural conference at Sanctuary Cove.

“it is a timely initiative for the industry given the recent publicity generated globally as a result of the Queensland & Victoria floods, Tropical Cyclone Yasi and the fires in Western Australia. It is important for us to get a message to the rest of the world that the industry has been largely unaffected by these events and the Marine Industry in Australia is alive and well,” said Jenkins.

The conference is on very solid ground with support from the Queensland Government, The Dept of Innovation, Industry, Science & Research, The Gold Coast City Council, Austrade, AIMEX and Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.

Jenkins said a very targeted and interesting programme has been developed involving relevant industry topics, quality guest speakers and key networking opportunities for both Australian and International attendees.

The conference will be the key Superyacht and Export specific event in Australia for 2011 and will bring together the main players in the industry value chain. It is envisaged the conference will attract a strong number of industry from both Australia and overseas

The key dates for the conference are 17/18 May 2011. Superyacht Australia will be distributing further information in regards to programme content and guest speakers over the next two weeks.
