60m Perini Navi superyacht hull C.2193 to be fitted with thruster by Ocean Yacht Systems

May 11, 2012

Ocean Yacht Systems (OYS) are delighted to announce they are now contracted to supply the new Perini Navi 60m series vessels with their latest RDE (Rim Driven Electric) thruster. The first model from these successful series to be fitted with the OYS thurster will be the sailing yacht hull C.2193. The hull C.2193 superyacht is due to be delivered in 2013.

Launched at the Monaco Yacht Show 2011, the RDE has been welcomed into the marketplace as a quieter and lighter alternative to other electric thrusters available. With the propeller as the only moving part, there is no need for expensive rim bearings or watertight seals which save weight, cost and improve the reliability.

Perini Navi luxury yacht hull c.2193 will be installed with a RDE-0650-S-090, which is a 90kw/120hp swing deploying thruster and will be delivered to the yard in Viareggio towards the close of 2012 where she will be fitted out and completed ready for handover.

“We have a close relationship with Perini Navi,” comments Mark Barwell, Sales Director for OYS. “We pride ourselves on finding customised solutions and it is great that we are now extending the offerings of OYS to Perini Navi. We are looking forward to working with them more on our thruster range.”

OYS are supplier of choice for standing rigging and hydraulic vangs and backstays, having supplied to 90% of the Perini Navi fleet currently at sea.

87m super yacht Iwana designed by Alex McDiarmid

February 07, 2012

British Designer Alex McDiarmid, based in the South of France, presents his latest project, the 87m motor yacht Iwana. After her success at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show, the Iwana superyacht has grown by 2m and showcases a fresh thinking approach to her styling, while maintaining the classic bow.

The Chinese New Year of the Water Dragon is the year when the luxury yacht Iwana inspired by marine iguanas, lizards and water dragons was created. Recognising this link between marine iguanas, lizards and the Chinese Water Dragon, Iwana is a symbol of prosperity, much like owning a Superyacht.

The Dragon is the most auspicious and powerful of the 12 signs of the zodiac, one associated with high energy and prosperity. It’s also the only mythical and legendary creature in the Chinese astrological calender and is considered the luckiest year in the Chinese Zodiac.

This year is considered especially auspicious because it is the year of the Water Dragon and Chinese dragons traditionally symbolise potent and auspicious powers. The dragon is a symbol of power and superior control, a good symbol that represents change and mobility.

Main features of the super yacht Iwana:

The main superstructure takes its form from the head of a Dragon while the decks and communication tower are inspired by the dorsal crests of Dragons and beautiful marine iguanas.

Similar to panoramic roof windows on modern cars, the super structure integrates a full length, panoramic roof window running over the Iwana yacht. This incorporates a solar panel system in the ‘Magic Smart Glass’. All glass on the vessel is electronically and colour switchable changeing instantly for privacy, sun/glare protection and visual entertainment.

There appears to be huge expanses of glass used in the yacht. Obviously due to current manufacturing capabilities, a one piece large glazing structure can not be viably produced. Therefore an automotive glazing and bodywork technique is applied in ‘colourway break’. This in essence disguises the supporting structures behind the glass giving a visual impression of one continuous piece of material. The amount of natural daylight that enters the yacht is on another scale altogether.

In order to extend and maximise deck space aft, the hull opens into two, fold down, roll out, and wrap around bathing platforms. The inspiration for this comes from the sun loving, hood expanding, frill-necked lizards in hot countries. The platform incorporates part of the aft hull window turning into a partial glass bottomed floor allowing for the observation of underwater marine life and habitats. Owner decided, A-symmetrical fold out beach platform and seperate tender garage is a possibility as with many features on the Iwana yacht.

On the main deck, a social and relaxation zone, a swimming pool aft gives uninterupted views of the sea and sun bathing for guests. A jacuzzi located on the owners private dinning deck gives spectacular views from the yacht and plenty of room for invited guests. The upper deck sees a very private retreat for the owner inaddition to the private dinning deck. We have not cluttered the decks with excess furniture prefering to keep things simple.

Lighting is subtle around the superstructure, stairs and decks. The superstructure appears to float aft with lighting recessed at the base and a series of features cut into the structure. This along with the three main ‘window slashes’ cut into the superstructure and once lit at 100% gives for a spectacular scene. The wrap around underwater hull effect is of course an option.

The transom and/or tender garage can hold a personal submersible housed longitudinally, craned out, rotated 90° once clear of the transom door and then winch lowered into the water. Custom tenders and toys are under development matching the exterior styling and livery of the Iwana yacht. Water toys include waverunners, sea scooters, windsurfers, kayaks, waterskis, wakeboards and a whole range of scuba and fishing gear are standard.

Iwana featuring SeaBird personal submersible:

US based AquaVenture Water Crafts are makers of the fastest personal submersible in the world and Alex McDiarmid is proud to feature a very unique product with his project.

Company Founder and President Richard Maurer comments: “SeaBird’s patent-pending tow system facilitates unprecedented performance as its propulsion is derived from a surface towing vessel. This in essence delivers the power of internal combustion to an underwater vessel. SeaBird is controlled with a joystick from either of its two seats and can maneuver as aggressively as a jet fighter or transport you beneath the surface in a ride as smooth as a Rolls Royce. It can maneuver anywhere within a large cone behind its towing vessel while performing rapid 360 degree rolls, traveling straight up, or diving down steeper than most roller coasters. It will be certified to a submerged speed of 22 knots and a maximum depth of 91 meters.”

Viareggio Superyachts yacht builder shows great environmental conscience

October 19, 2011

VSY – Viareggio Superyachts Italian motor yacht builder responsible for the creation of such stunning vessels the 62m Candyscape II charter yacht and the 72.10m motor yacht Stella Maris, believes that the best expression of luxury and comfort is achieved in the highest respect for the marine environment on all fronts. VSY takes this seriously and thus is proud to be the recipient of strict and prestigious certifications such as the RINA GreenStar Plus Gold,  ABS ES (Environment Safety) and Lloyd’s EP (Environmental Protection).

The stunning VSY motor yacht Stella Maris

The long list of features and care they put into their Total Eco-Yachts is impressive:

•             wide use of recyclable materials

•             redundancy also for the system of water treatment able to produce biologically transparent and odourless discharges running on 2 units

•             electric auxiliary engines for use in harbour and wherever it is advisable to avoid running of the main engine, resulting in a vastly reduced environmental impact, especially in terms of noise

•             a Green Anchoring system to station the yacht by dynamic positioning in those areas where traditional anchoring is forbidden because potentially damaging, for example, to coral reefs and Scandinavian fjords

•             installation of last generation particle filters for the highest possible smoke reduction in the exhaust system

•             recycling of the heat from the generator exhausts to produce hot water on board

•             study and definition of an eco-productive maintenance system for continuous integrated monitoring (extended to post-delivery) of the eco-systems and appliances installed, providing also a dedicated ergonomic training software platform for the manning of the yacht.

This results in a simple but effective formula: Maximum Efficiency on Minimum Energy – without damage to the eco-system.

All of this is in pursuit of VSY’S essential mission: to produce a few but exclusive super-yachts, totally custom-built, innovative and technologically superlative. Simply unique yachts which fully embrace the yard’s Eco Green vision, introducing the new and exclusive concept of “deeper luxury”.

The commitment of VSY to respect the environment on all fronts goes even beyond building Total Eco Yachts. “VSY go cycling in Monaco” and “Because Forests Matter” are other simple contributions to make a better world for ourselves and next generations.

“VSY go cycling in Monaco”

The personalized VSY-Viareggio Superyachts bicycles did not go unnoticed during the recent Monaco Boat Show.  By now we know the enormous amount of care and long check-list of methods and features that the Viareggio Superyachts puts into their Total Eco-Yachts. True to form, VSY joined pleasure and eco-sustainability by using their own bicycles to move around Monaco during the Yacht Show. A simple idea that reinforces the yard’s Eco-Green vision and offers a small contribution towards the improvement of the quality of life for ourselves and future generations.

“Because Forests Matter”

VSY’s commitment to respect the environment on all fronts goes even beyond building Total EcoYachts, obtaining rigorous and prestigious international Certifications like Rina Green Star Plus Gold and ABS ES (Environment Safety).

They are aware that half of the timber harvested worldwide is used to make paper. So it is vital that everyone makes a commitment to the responsible use of the world’s resources.  For this reason, to print the VSY brand-new double LP-size brochure – reminiscent of the old vinyl record sleeves – they have selected a special eco-friendly paper certified by FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) – Mixed Sources. This label ensures that the timber or fibre in the product comes from responsibly harvested and verified sources, which exclude unacceptable forestry.

FSC certification is a voluntary, market-based tool that supports responsible forest management worldwide. FSC certified forest products are verified from the forest of origin through the supply chain.

A small contribution to make a better world for present and future generations and Viareggio Superyachts‘ way to celebrate and support the International Year of Forests.

Exclusive interview with the Milan based yacht design studio HOT LAB

October 14, 2011

Besides the possibility to view some of the most exciting new launched charter yachts at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show, CharterWorld had the opportunity to interview Hot Lab’s designers and talk about their latest projects, such as the 27M displacement yacht for Posillipo (Cantieri Navali Rizzardi) shipyard, the Oceanco PA 168 superyacht and the  stunning NOOR motor yacht, a two-time nominee in the upcoming Showboat Design Awards. In this exclusive two on one interview with Antonio Romano and Michele Dragoni, two of the three Milan based designers and creators of the Hot Lab yacht design studio, will also reveal how exactly does an idea become a yacht concept.

CharterWorld:  Hot Lab was founded in Milan, in 2004 by three ambitious young men, Michele Dragoni, Enrico Lumini and Antonio Romano. You have started in the automotive or interior design industry and decided to moved into yacht design.  What prompted you to move into motor yacht design and create the Hot Lab yacht design studio?

Hot Lab: Hot Lab was born after an excellent meeting with the Raffaelli shipyard at a Genoa Boat Show. Thanks to Raffaelli, we had our first commission to create a custom made interior for  Ontera 66′ yacht. With this project we opened our doors as Hot Lab – yacht & design.

All three of us, including Enrico and Michele, worked in a product design studio. Previously, before entering the workforce, I have attended a design university in Rome. I was taught by a great man and a professional of the industry, Gianni Zuccon, to whom I can be thankful for my passion for yachts and yachting. Michele was also very fortunate to work with an equally renowned professional, Cristian Grande, during his years in the car design industry. Furthermore, our interior architect, Enrico, apart from the years of experience in interior design, spent a large amount of time on boards of yachts (and under water) as a professional scuba diver. Although we all have different backgrounds, we all share the same passion for the sea, which we are trying to translate into our designs. I have to point out, that since we have started three other members joined our team at Hot Lab.  We have a pleasure to work with such great people as Antonio Scognamiglio, Valentina Magnolfi and Silvia Iraghi.

CW:   What influence do your previous experiences in car design and/or interior design have on your current occupation as yacht designers? Are there any similarities when it comes to these areas of design?

HL: Our background in car design is often present in our work.  Take for example, one of our latest projects, the Oceanco PA168 superyacht. Her entire aft area was inspired by the Renault concept DeZir and during the design process of the ‘Gotcha’ runabout  for Blue – Yachting, we have studied several solutions, accessories and graphics strongly inspired by racing cars.

CW:   Faced with a new project, you must have a number of ideas run through your mind. What is the first step taken when creating a new yacht design?

HL: Most of our work includes private clients, in which case we receive very precise suggestions and requirements. Following this,  teams in our studio commence to research the market, work on general arrangements and the exterior view, to create a base for Hot Lab’s exterior designer, Michele Dragoni.

CW:  Your work is being recognised all over the world. In your opinion, what differentiates Hot Lab from other yacht designers?

HL: Hot Lab’s designs are clear with elegant lines trying to follow simple rules of proportions. We do appreciate the works of important and established yacht designers, however we believe there is always a room for improvement. Our aim is to follow the tradition incorporating small aesthetic innovations and pay extreme attention to details.

CW:    Every designer cultivates its own style. How would you describe the style that Hot Lab has to offer its clients?

HL: Our yachts are sophisticated with slight aggressiveness. When commissioned by shipyard however, we try to incorporate its style and identity into our own vision. We aim for elegant clean look, with interesting design elements, yet timeless in fashion.

CW:  Where do you draw your ideas from?

HL: The ideas come mainly from the clients, really. We try to get to know their style, their passions and desires. Hot Lab creates a design based on clients’ personality, finding out perhaps what car they drive, what clubs they are frequenting, their favourite artists as well as the style their home represents. This enables us to create a perfect ‘second home’ for the Owner or potential charter guests, where they can feel comfortable and at ease.

CW:   What are the main aspects taken into consideration during a yacht design process?

HL: There are number of things to consider. Hot Lab is always trying to create a warm ‘family feeling’ on board. Apart form clients’ wishes, we have to examine the current yachting market, what type of features and yachts are the most sought after. At the moment the owners look for open spaces, large windows and natural flow between the interior and exterior areas. The Owners as well as luxury charter guests want to feel the closets possible to the nature and thoroughly enjoy the beautiful horizons and the sea. Having said all this, we also need to take into consideration the shipyard’s requirements and what our competition is offering. After which, we can let all the ideas flow and the designs will take shape naturally.

CW:  Customer’s wishes and requirements are very important. How do you find the right balance when it comes to these, your own beliefs and ideas, and the collaboration with the shipyard?

HL: It is all about collaboration and communication. As per the exterior design of the yacht, very rarely do customers specify design elements as such. They perhaps express their opinion on what type of layout they have in mind, details about the sun areas, jacuzzi and so on. On the other hand, the owner will pay much more attention to the interior. As mentioned before, we try to find out what type of interior would make him/her feel comfortable and at ease. When it comes to the shipyard, respecting their technical capabilities as well as the limits and possibilities of a given platform, we can design pretty much freely.

CW:    Futuristic look is a trend that appears to be very popular with selected yacht designers. Do you see these designs becoming more popular with the clients or do costumers still prefer a more timeless, down to earth design?

HL: At Hot Lab we would like to see our yachts on water and in style in many years to come. Although some futuristic yachts have that ‘wow’ effect at first glance, often they do not stand the time, when it comes to their design.

CW:   New materials, products and features are coming out each year. What do you think does the future hold for superyacht owners, when it comes to superyacht  design? Are there any new and exciting materials that we can expect to see in the near future?

HL: There is an ongoing research in the yachting industry. So there are always new materials coming out as well as new technologies. These can include new types of flooring solutions, new ways of working with glass or new entertainment systems as well as new construction materials or coatings.

CW:    Another important issue is the ecology and environment. How does it affect your design process?

HL: Apart from the well known solutions when it comes to the structural aspects and the exterior design, at Hot Lab we are trying to seek new eco-friendly materials for our interior projects . There is a range of new ecological, recycled or recyclable materials on the market suitable for superyachts, without loosing the glamour and the luxurious atmosphere. There are stunning fabrics made of natural fibres, such as rice, organic cotton, wool and many others. Me and my partner Enrico are also teachers at the private IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) university in Milan. During our courses specialising in Yacht Eco Design our students are encouraged to come up with different environmentally friendly solutions and we see an enormous amount of great ideas emerge every single year.

CW:  Moving onto the stunning 37 metre motor yacht NOOR, finalist at the 2011 World Superyacht Awards and a finalist of the ‘best interior layout’ and the ‘best interior’ at the 2011 Showboat Design Awards to be held on the 25th of October. You must be very proud of her, congratulations! What were the biggest challenges you faced during the design process of her interior?

HL: Thanks! One of the main challenges was the staircase. We spent long hours and designed numerous solutions before coming up with the perfect and the most reflective of the Owner’s wishes and desires. Having said this, we enjoyed every moment of her design and are very proud of her.

Hot Lab designed interior of the award winning NOOR superyacht

Hot Lab designed interior of the award winning NOOR superyacht

CW:   Sir Alec Issigonis once said: “A camel is a horse designed by a committee.” Was superyacht NOOR’s interior a creation of one key designer or does the complexity of a large yacht interior require a team effort?

HL: It  definitely is a team effort. There are parts of the project that are done by one designer only, and there are others, where we all sit together and work through ideas together.

CW:   What do you think sets NOOR apart from other yachts of her size?

HL: Attention to detail! In all of our projects we strive for a unique and noteworthy design. All of our concepts feature interesting design elements, that are not necessarily visible at first glance, but with closer inspection beautiful ‘treasures’ can be revealed. Superyacht NOOR boasts a very particular layout. Her dining area situated on the upper deck has been placed behind the wheelhouse in order to flow naturally with the deck. Great attention was paid to her lighting, where we designed large wide windows to ensure flow of natural daylight into the interior, while innovative indoor artificial light has been achieved thanks to a clever combination of led lights built into the walls, cabinet panels as well as baseboards. We have used numerous skylights to create a light and airy atmosphere throughout. Only five types of materials were used to create NOOR’s interior. Creating numerous combinations as well as different types of workmanships we achieved a one of a kind, yet fluid look.

CW: Apart from new designs, Hot Lab design studio also specialises in refits. As designers, how do you approach an already existing yacht interior/exterior and turn it into something new and fresh?

HL: There is a considerable difference between a completely new project and a refit project. Of course there is a larger amount of limitations involved. The layout is practically unalterable as well as most of the various spaces on board. Our approach depends on numerous aspects, as for example, the vessel’s age.  A motor yacht from the 1970′s would have a very different layout to one launched fairly recently. Back then the emphasis was on the interior spaces, whereas today we tend to ‘live’ more outside and focus on the exterior areas of a yacht. So in those cases, for example, we would aim to open up spaces by means of specific design elements and features. Whatever the project might be, our objective is to ‘breathe’ a new life into the boat and give her a fresh, elegant and sophisticated appeal.

CW:   Are there any new superyacht projects that we can expect to hear about in the upcoming weeks/months?

HL: At the present we are working on 3 displacement yachts in collaboration with Sergio Cutolo for the well known shipyard Posillipo (Cantieri Navali Rizzardi).  The 27-metre motor yacht is currently under construction, whereas the information about the 33 and the 38-metre yacht is still confidential.  Your readers might, however, read some additional news related to these two yachts, soon.

In regard to the new project, the 27M diplacement yacht, which we are developing in collaboration with the Italian Posillipo shipyard, we can reveal that she is a three deck Navetta, featuring a very large beam as well as low fuel consumption. The Posillipo 27m Navetta yacht will boast large interior spaces to comfortably accommodate the owner and guest alike. Hot Lab is in charge of both the exterior as well as interior spaces.

Hot Lab 27M yacht in collaboration with Sergio Cutolo for the Posillipo Shipyard

Hot Lab's 27M yacht in collaboration with Sergio Cutolo for the Posillipo Shipyard

Beside these projects we are still working on some improvements to the PA 168 yacht design for Oceanco, a concept based on the highly regarded Oceanco yacht platform. Regardless of her impressive dimensions, Oceanco PA 168 superyacht features neat external lines, giving an impression of a much lighter vessels. Her layout and deck space designs have been carefully studied to communicate a visual sense of lightness, yet provide ample spaces outdoors as well as indoors.

In addition we are at an early stage for one new interior design project for private clients. A 37-metre superyacht, also with an old traditional Italian boat builder. This collaboration is still under discussion, however we would be very proud to realise this project.

We have also received interests from certain Dutch shipyards that we are currently discussing. Following the upcoming Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show we will certainly have more to talk about. The rest is top secret, I’m sorry …

CW:  What advise would Hot Lab give to other aspiring designers entering this  industry?

HL: To create motor yacht designs with dedication and passion. To develop projects that are visually appealing but at the same time functional.

The close proximity of MB92 and Pinmar—both Pepe García-Aubert, MB92, and Sean Ewing, Pinmar, were in attendance at the event—further cements Marina Port Vell’s appeal as a home port benefiting from the advantages of a world class nautical cluster.
  • Environmental considerations are of paramount importance including high tech water and waste management systems. The marina will provide electrical operations designed to reduce emissions and noise pollution.
  • Marina Port Vell will build on its existing operations to deliver 5-star quality services and expects the staff to enhance their career opportunities as plans develop.
  • When questioned on perceived competition from other marina projects such as Port Adriano and Porto Montenegro, Martin Bellamy commented that Salamanca Group see these marinas as being complementary and their development has helped to raise quality standards overall.

Jongert to build two new superyachts: Jongert 43m and 44m Yacht

October 07, 2011

Prestigious Dutch luxury yacht builder Jongert Shipyard is proud to announce two new orders for motor yachts, settled at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show. One of them is a Jongert 44m Yacht and the other is a Jongert 43m superyacht. As well as these two new exciting yacht orders, Jongert has another LE 500 yacht under construction together with a 41-metre yacht, who’s construction started last year. The Jongert 44m superyacht with design by Dubois Naval Architects is intended for a customer in Ukraine. Both of the yachts are scheduled for delivery in 2013 and additional news will be unveiled in the coming months.

While Jongert was still looking for a clear direction at last year’s show, the two new orders ensured that the yard was well on course this time round, back where it belongs at the top of the superyacht industry. Everything was in place at the show, including interpreters, transport over the water for clients, refreshments and even a smart photo shoot.

Solid organisation

Peter Versluis, the director of the VeKa Group (the organisation to which Jongert Shipyard belongs) was also present in Monaco.  His presence was very much appreciated, and many of our business relations took the opportunity to meet him. The fact that Jongert is part of a multinational maritime group offers our clients a guarantee of stability and reliability. The VeKa Group is active in virtually every maritime sector and has shipyards in the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Romania, the Ukraine, Bulgaria, China and Serbia. Thanks to mutual cooperation, we have virtually no limits. Semi-customized and fully customized yachts measuring up to 135 m [443 ft] in length can be built at one of the facilities.

New designs for 2011

Jongert Shipyard recently presented two new designs: the Jongert 500 LE Yacht, an exclusive motor yacht of 50 metres in length, and the 3000 M, a yacht of over thirty metres in length with exceptional sailing qualities. The initial reactions to the new designs were very positive. Of course, the existing designs remain available and have even been restyled. “We’ll do everything in our power to make our customers’ dreams come true”, says Eel Kant. “Jongert will continue to chart new courses well into the future.”

New branch in France

To provide even better service to its international clientele, Jongert International has established a branch in Antibes in the south of France. The office will be run by Niels Lensen, a Dutchman who has been living and working in France for a long time and is thoroughly familiar with the international yacht sector.

Fort Lauderdale

Jongert will have its own stand at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The event will take place from Thursday 27th to Monday 31st October at Fort Lauderdale in Florida. You can find Jongert in the Y&B tent at stand number 664.

21st Monaco Yacht Show reports extraordinary success

October 05, 2011

Just like in the previous years, the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show proved to be a successful superyacht business event. Four days of beautiful Mediterranean sunshine provided for a wonderful backdrop to over 100 superyachts, with over 40 yachts making their worldwide premiere. The internationally renowned and glitteringly gorgeous event was buzzing with wealth and business excitement. The 21st Monaco Yacht Show was perhaps the most successful show since its launch 21 years ago.

28,200 visitors, slightly up on last year’s attendance, came to view superyachts from 25 to 86 metres.  This year’s large yacht line up included: Steven Spielberg’s Seven Seas (86 m), Cakewalk (85 m) the largest on display this year and Imagine the high volume 64 metre yacht from Amels. Prima the brand new yacht from Columbus Yachts was one of a handful of yachts from builders who have never built a yacht before. Adrenaline junkies loved motor yacht Shooting Star a superfast 38 metre superyacht by Espen Oeino and Danish Yachts while sailing enthusiasts crowded around Hemisphere catamaran to catch a glimpse of the world’s largest catamaran built for luxury cruising.

Yachts for sale included charter yacht Big Fish one of the most dramatically designed discovery yachts that has, since her launch last year, already explored the globe and visited Antarctica. Proving the business prowess of the Show, a 42 metre Turkish built superyacht sailed into the show as motor yacht Nomade and departed with her new name Bar Tender yacht painted on the stern having been sold during the show. The Dutch builder Jongert used the show to conclude the signing of a contract that will see them build a 46 metre motor yacht designed by Dubois.

Exhibitor displays were equally important to visitors. This year Monaco afforded the industry the most spectacular selection of things to see. More than 500 industry leaders exhibited luxury products, services and facilities and then Show provided the essential opportunities for industry professionals to network.

Confidence was high that the superyacht industry was sailing forward towards a bright horizon despite the gloomy world economy. The real benefits the Monaco Show will bring to exhibitors that attended are only determined over the weeks that follow the event, but many left the show on a high, enthused by the quality and quantity of enquiries.

Miriam Cain, Communications Manager, Camper & Nicholsons, UK said, “At this year’s Monaco Yacht Show we welcomed a large number of existing and new clients. All our yachts on display received good interest, and the feeling is that the market overall continues, albeit slowly, to improve.”

Billy Smith, Vice President at Trinity Yachts knows that the Monaco Yacht Show always brings solid inquiries. He said, “Interest level seemed to be up from last year. Of course, while we are at the show expressly to showcase our custom superyachts, we appreciate the opportunity to network at the many fine events which run concurrently throughout the show.”

Hein Velema CEO Fraser Yachts in Monaco was equally enthusiastic saying, “2011 at Monaco has seen a positive Show with plenty of qualified buyers, serious discussions, realistic prices and positive negotiations. Success at boat shows is never immediate and we have to study the reports of our brokers, but they were all kept extremely busy with qualified client viewings and consultations throughout the four days.”

Alev Karagulle Director of Marketing and Communications at Burgess said, “We have every reason to believe that Monaco Yacht Show 2011 was a continued improvement to recent past years and will prove to be a key event in supporting our successful performance in this challenging market environment.”

Paul Cook, Operations Director at the electronic supply and fit firm: ANT said, “MYS 2011 reflected a feeling of positivity that despite the continued economic and political turmoil there was an air of genuine confidence within the Superyacht industry. We enjoyed the busiest Show ever with many new clients inviting us to be involved in different projects and current clients applauding our continued efforts to deliver proven cutting edge technology that suits their desires and needs.”

For most exhibitors and visitors alike the Monaco Yacht Show is the most successful show in the world’s yachting calendar but what makes it special are the events every day: charity auctions, prize giving, lunches, gala dinners and cocktail parties. These take the occasion into a class of its own without equal. As in previous years, Monaco Yacht Show organisers pledged a continuing support for Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies, a locally based charity with the organisers again donating 50% of all entrance ticket sales (EUR 52,700 this year) and co‐organising the 4 th edition of the world renowned Only Watch charity auction at Hotel Hermitage. This year, the once every two year event of 40 one‐off Swiss luxury watches closed with an outstanding result of EUR 4,563,000 that benefits research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

The Monaco Yacht Show also continues its previously pledged support for Wood Forever a programme backed by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II and one dedicated to fighting world deforestation. This year a donation of EUR 40,000 was made by the Show organisers. The money will be used to better educate those involved in the yachting that only wood certified as originating from sustainably‐managed forests should be used in construction, if deforestation is to be halted. The Show was also the occasion for Wood Forever to formalize the support of SYBAss and the new commitment of the US shipyard Burger Boat as very first member of the programme.

In association with Monaco Yacht Show, the RINA classification society presented the Green Plus Yacht certificates 2011 to Prima (2011/53.90m/Palumbo shipyard) and Numptia (2011/70m/Rossi Navi shipyard), two yachts whose construction meets with compliance of the strictest environmental regulations.  His Serene Highness Prince Albert II made the award to the yachts builders in the company of his guest; His Royal Highness King Juan Carlos of Spain who joined him on his tour of the show.

Earlier, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and His Royal Highness King Juan Carlos of Spain on their tour of the show also attended the Prix du Design MYS/ Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg. 2011 winner, motor yacht Satori (2011/50m/Heesen Yachts) was awarded for her “Pure Design” signed by the renowned French designer, Rémi Tessier.

Clearly the 21st Monaco Yacht Show overstepped the expectations of the industry, breaking the records of the event’s history.
