52nd Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show´s results

November 14, 2011

At the 52nd annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS), three million square feet of exhibits in-water and on land were available for optimistic exhibitors and motivated buyers. Despite the weather was not that good over the weekend, the show was reported to be the best exhibition in 5 years.

“Overall we are very pleased with how this year’s show turned out,” said Efrem Zimbalist III, CEO of Show Management, the company that produces the show. “There was a strong presence of serious buyers and our exhibitors were ready with great new product and realistic pricing.”

As retail sales begin an upturn, experienced yachtsmen and those looking to enter the market with the purchase of their first yacht cautiously resurfaced as eager and more educated consumers.

“Crowds lined the aisles of the Superyacht Builders and Designers Tent,” said Catalina Bujor, PR/marketing officer with Dockwise Yacht Transport. “We had consistent traffic coming in for quotes and inquiries and we came away from the show with several bookings and valuable leads from all over the world.”

Said Andrew Cohen with YACHTSIGN®, “We met with owners, captains, builders, marina operators and world-class designers who insist upon buying the highest-quality products, one of the many reasons they come to FLIBS.”

This year’s show focused on engaging attendees as well as exhibitors with easy-to-navigate show sites at this best-of boating lifestyle event. Enhancements to the show including the new smartphone app named MyBoatShow, Trawler Port, the SYBAss Pavilion and Captain’s Den all contributed to a well-executed and heavily attended event.

Sean Blue, AVP and director of yachts with Chartis, a global property and casualty insurance provider whose display was among the superyacht builders in the new SYBAss Pavilion, concurred with the positive feedback, adding, “Despite the weather at the show, traffic was good and chatter on the docks was definitely up in terms of buyers in the crowd. This seemed to be across various segments in the industry and yachts of all values. What also seemed to be occurring was a greater collaboration between various businesses to add value to each other’s services and to sell the yachting lifestyle and build a stronger industry.”

Attendees took to the docks at the Bahia Mar, Hall of Fame, Hilton, Sails and Las Olas Marinas rain or shine with many sales reported and offers made.

“I can’t recall a moment during the Show that the Beneteau G.T. booth wasn’t buzzing with buyers examining the new Beneteau Power line-up,” said Bob Denison, co-owner of Dension Yacht Sales, the exclusive Beneteau Power dealer in South Florida. “TrawlerPort benefitted from a steady stream of trawler buyers. The 52 Swift Trawler attracted trawler enthusiasts from all over the world.”

The Broward Convention Center, an extremely popular show location during the wetter moments of the show, also reported quality activity.

“We saw big crowds, especially for the rainy days that we had on the weekend,” said Jim Zimmerman, general manager of Jerry’s Marine Service. “We saw a lot of interest from customers wanting to repower their existing yachts. Owners who are not ready to spend for a new yacht just yet are going to re-power their existing yachts.”

Also heavily attended were the 45 free fishing, diving and boating safety seminars, some with standing room only.

Across six locations more than 1000 yachts were on display in the water and on land, in addition to every type of fishing product imaginable, marine electronics, safety equipment and boating accessories. Also on display were exotic cars, a submarine and a helicopter.

DYT’s Yacht Express enters Port Everglades with $270,341,000 worth of superyachts

October 26, 2011

When the 209-metre (686 foot) long Yacht Express entered into Fort Lauderdale on  24th October,  it was nothing short of a show stopper. Dockwise Yacht Transport’s (DYT) fleet of semi-submersible ships carried an unparalleled cargo of yachts valued collectively at $270,341,000 and  claimed its berth at Port Everglades.  Following this the signature grey and orange ship began an hours-long ballasting process that allowed sea water to flood its dock bay and 19 state-of-the-art luxury yachts to safely motor out the back and on to new adventures.

The largest of the vessels was the 190’ (57.91 meter) super yacht Mi Sueno, which loaded on Yacht Express in Genoa, Italy on October 6. It had just returned from the Monaco Yacht Show and will be attending the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which starts Thursday, October 27.

“The reason that Mi Sueno is shipped must be credited to the yacht’s owner who really knows how to look after his crew and boat,” said Mi Sueno’s Captain Glynn Smith. “The crew needs time off after such a busy charter season in the Med, and shipping with DYT gives us that option. The other consideration is the wear and tear on the yacht during the Atlantic crossing. The average crossing adds 400 to 500 hours on the engines and generators, not to mention unforeseen incidents that can occur in the middle of the ocean.”

Several of the yachts on Yacht Express have shipped with DYT multiple times, including the 163’ (49.70 meter) Casino Royale charter yacht, the 160’ (48.78 meter) charter yacht Odessa (four times each), the 161’ (49.09 meter) Zoom Zoom Zoom (seven times), and the 132 foot (40.24 meter) motor yacht Miss Rose.

“I have made four trips with Dockwise Yacht Transport and will continue to use DYT’s services for all future travels,” said charter yacht Miss Rose’s Captain Charles Hazouri. “Once again the Captain and Crew of Yacht Express were very accommodating, friendly and courteous. They have truly made our summer season complete!”

Captain Hazouri was a “rider” on the Yacht Express, which provides yacht owners with complimentary cabins for crew who accompany their yachts on the voyage. Among the ship’s other amenities are an atrium with 180-degree views and lounge bar, a swimming pool, a restaurant, and conference, media and fitness facilities.

DYT has three more float-on/float-off voyages coming from the Mediterranean before year’s end, including one aboard the DYT ship Super Servant 4, which will arrive in Ft. Lauderdale October 28 from Palma de Mallorca, Spain, fully loaded with 24 super yachts totaling a value $190,000,000. Some of the yachts will offload in Port Everglades; then the ship will proceed to Newport, R.I., where it will once again fully load with 43 sailing and motor yachts bound for St. Thomas, USVI in time for the Caribbean sailing season. The total value of that cargo is approximately $70,000,000.

More about DYT

Dockwise Yacht Transport (DYT), headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, specializes in the maritime transport of private luxury yachts and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dockwise Ltd., a Bermuda incorporated company that is the leading marine contractor providing total transport services to the offshore, onshore and yachting industries as well as installation services of extremely heavy offshore platforms.

Dockwise yacht carriers are semi-submersible and utilize the float on/float off loading method that allows yachts of any size to be safely floated on and off as cargo. The carriers submerge themselves by pumping nine million gallons of water into their ballast tanks; the vessels are floated into place one-by-one, then sea-fastened before the ship pumps dry to prepare for boat transport. The process is reversed to allow the yachts to safely disembark once they reach their final destinations.

DYT’s global yacht transport routes for its semi-submersibles include the U.S. East Coast (Newport, Rhode Island and Port Everglades, Florida), the Mediterranean (Toulon, France; Genoa and Taranto, Italy; Marmaris, Turkey; Palma de Mallorca, Spain), the Bahamas (Freeport), the Caribbean (St. Thomas and Martinique) , the Pacific West Coast (Golfito, Costa Rica; La Paz and Ensenada, Mexico; and Vancouver, B.C., Canada) and the South Pacific (Papeete, Tahiti; Auckland, New Zealand; and Brisbane, Australia).

With additional lift-on/lift-off offerings, DYT has serviced the following ports: Dubai (UAE), Genoa and Livorno (Italy), Hong Kong (China), Jacksonville and West Palm Beach (Florida), Palma de Mallorca (Spain), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Rotterdam (The Netherlands), Phuket and Singapore (Thailand), and Southampton (UK).

Since its maiden voyage in 1987, the company has transported over 11,000 motor and sailing yachts to various destinations around the globe, offering owners and charterers safe and easy access to many of the world’s premier cruising grounds. Along with area representatives around the globe, DYT has additional operating offices in Italy, Martinique and Newport (R.I.).

History of the Classic Superyacht Endeavour JK4

Endeavour was commissioned by Sir T.O.M. Sopwith and built by Camper & Nicholson at Gosport England to challenge for the America’s Cup in 1934. Having prepared his campaign in Shamrock V, Sopwith was keen to ensure that this yacht was the most advanced design possible. With his experience designing aircraft Sopwith applied aviation technology to Endeavour’s rig and winches and spared nothing to make her the finest vessel of her day.

From launching in 1934 she continued her preparation by competing against sailing yacht Shamrock V (then owned by Sir Richard Fairey) and the newly launched Velsheda (owned by W.L Stephenson). She swept through the British racing fleet and into the hearts of yachtsmen the world around, winning many races in her first season. Like many before her, Endeavour did not win the Cup but she came closer to doing so than any other challenger.

S/Y Endeavour pioneered the development of the Quadrilateral genoa, a two clewed headsail offering immense sail area and power, and still used on J Class yachts racing today. She also had a larger and better designed spinnaker but Sopwith was let down by poor crewing. Just prior to departure for the USA, his professional crew went on strike for more money and Sopwith was forced to round up keen amateur sailors, who had the enthusiasm but not the experience. Afterwards, she returned to England to dominate the British racing scene until 1938 when she was laid up prior to the war.

Over the next 46 years, yacht Endeavour passed through many hands, her fate often hanging by a thread. Among other indignities, she was sold to a scrap merchant in 1947 only to be saved by another buyer hours before her demolition was due to begin. In the seventies, she sank in the Medina River in Cowes. Again at the eleventh hour, she was bought for ten pounds sterling by two carpenters who patched the holes in her hull with plastic bags and got her afloat again. In the early eighties, Endeavour sat in an abandoned seaplane base in southern England. She was a complete wreck, a rusting and forlorn hulk with no keel, rudder, ballast or interior.

REBUILD

In 1984 Endeavour was purchased and undertook a five year rebuild. The Endeavour yacht sailed again, on June 22, 1989, for the first time in 52 years.

Between 1989 and 1999 Endeavour cruised extensively and competed in numerous races, creating a wonderful spectacle In April 1999, history repeated itself when she was joined by S/ Y Shamrock V and Velsheda to compete in the Antigua Classics Regatta, bringing in a new era of J Class sailing a sight not seen in over 60 years
