World Superyacht Awards 2010 YOUNG DESIGNER OF THE YEAR
Winner: Mr Adam Voorhees
Judges’ Comments:
The Young Designer of the Year Award, organised in collaboration with the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA), is a worldwide initiative launched to encourage new talent into the yacht design industry.

Yacht Ra - designed by Young designer Adam Voorhees

Sponsored by Camper & Nicholsons International, the Young Designer of the Year Award recognises the achievement of an outstanding young designer and the potential impact of their work on current or future superyacht design.

Via RINA’s extensive network of contacts including links with over 64 universities worldwide, students and recent post-graduates in courses related to yacht or small craft design were called upon to enter the competition; their challenge, to design a superyacht to meet with an owner’s specification. Marks were awarded for style and innovation of design and the vessel also needed to be technically feasible and seaworthy.

An expert judging panel, comprised of some of the superyacht industry’s leading superyacht designers, met at RINA’s Headquarters in London to access the merits of each entry and select the top five competition finalists and overall winner who will receive €5,000 prize money and the coveted Neptune trophy.

Adam Voorhees, a post-graduate from California, US, received the Young Designer of the Year Award 2010 for his impressive project, RA.

Trevor Blakeley, Chairman of the judges commented:

“The judges considered that RA was an imaginative design which fully met all aspects of the specification, and showed good consistency and proportion between internal and external aspects of the design. The judges felt that it was a very “user friendly” design that would appeal to both owner and charterer. The judges were particularly impressed by the designers clear understanding of the quality and enjoyment of life on the water – what yachting should be all about. ”

Yacht NORTHERN STAR is Winner of BEST DISPLACEMENT MOTOR YACHT World Superyacht Awards 2010

May 23, 2010

Winner of BEST DISPLACEMENT MOTOR YACHT 1,300 GT AND ABOVE: Yacht NORTHERN STAR

Northern Star by Lurssen Yachts

Length: 75.40m
Builder: Lürssen Yachts
Naval Architect: Lürssen Yachts
Exterior Stylist: Espen Oeino
Interior Designer: Pauline Nunns

Yacht Name: Northern Star

Judges’ Comments:
Some extremely high quality yachts were entered for this largest class and the high marks awarded by judges reflected their admiration of the builders and designers as well as the technical characteristics of these vessels. The marking system used by the jury eliminates any variations in the level of marking between individual judges and when the final mathematics were done an extremely small margin separated the first three yachts. But the result was clear. Northern Star, the 75.4-metre built by Lürssen for an owner highly experienced in marine matters took first place, with a clear majority of jurors supporting this position. She is indeed, an extraordinarily well conceived and specified ocean-going yacht, offering an ice-classed hull and the ability to operate in the widest possible range of conditions, from polar to equatorial. Her machinery is also impressive in its choice and quality and includes, for example, bow and stern thrusters, independently operable rudders and 2.25 metre diameter propellers that can be operated coupled or single to give the yacht good manoeuvrability in restricted areas. As one might expect, living areas and accommodation for the owner and his guests are palatial as well as pleasingly decorated, and include such facilities as a guest office, massage room, cinema and gymnasium, and a real log fire in the upper saloon. The crew are also well cared for, being provided with well sized cabins, a gymnasium, and a crew lounge in addition to their mess. In the judges’ opinion, this sturdily attractive, beautifully constructed, go-anywhere yacht was a worthy class winner.

Australia: The 2010 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show Opens Thursday

May 17, 2010

The 2010 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show starts this Thursday with a fantastic line up of marine products valued at millions of dollars.

The 22nd annual Show is staged at Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast from Thursday, May 20 to Sunday, May 23 from 9am to 5pm daily.

The 2010 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show

This year’s event has drawn 421 exhibitors with on-water displays at the marina, hardstand displays through the waterfront Marine Village and exhibits through three large pavilions.

“Visitors can wander past close to 200 boats on water ranging from super yachts through to glamorous luxury cruisers, sail boats and multihulls,” said Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show general manager Mr Barry Jenkins. If placed bow to stern, on-water displays would stretch close to 3km.

On land, a wide range of marine craft are displayed with wakeboard vessels, trailerable boats, jetskis and kayaks. Three large pavilions showcase electronics, engines, marine safety gear and services.

This year two new components have been introduced – a Prestige Brokerage and Charter area on water and a dedicated Sea Trial area which is an Australian first.

“We know international exhibitors or buyers are coming from United States, New Zealand, China,
Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, Jordan, Turkey and Italy to name a few countries,” said Mr Jenkins.
“This year we have a contingent of Italian marine companies exhibiting in C pavilion for the first time.”

There are 107 world and Australian marine product releases in close to 15,000sqm of pavilion and hardstand display space.

In the luxury motor yacht area, vessels at the Show include the 22m Adagio from New Zealand; two Assegai custom built sport fishing boats and the world release of the Endurance 750 pilothouse.

Princess showcases the Princess 78 Motor Yacht in an Australian launch while Sunseeker releases
three new vessels – the 80 Yacht, 86 Yacht and 30 Metre Yacht and there are three new relaases on the national market from Fairline.

“It is very difficult to put a figure on the value of these displays. Certainly the combined marine displays at the Show would top some hundreds of millions of dollars,” said Mr Jenkins. Some vessels alone are worth millions of dollars.

Statement Marine booth

Australian companies Maritimo, Riviera, LeisureCat, Lizard Yachts, Clipper Motor Yachts and Van Munster Boats launch new vessels on the world market.
New boats in the under 50ft power category include the Arvor 215, the 46 sedan from Alaska Motor Yacht range, the Sea Doo Challenger series and debuts from Mainship Trawlers and Nimbus.

Sail boat brands are strong with Bavaria, Catalina, Oceanis, Fountaine Pajot, Hunter, Imexus, Lagoon.

Montebello and Scandinavian Yachts to name some new releases.

“Ticket sales have been strong for the Australian Marine Industry Breakfast facilitated by Gold Coast City Marina,” said Mr Jenkins. This ticketed public event features Thom Dammrich from the US, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and president of the International Council for Marine Industries (ICOMIA) as guest speaker. The breakfast is held on Friday, May 21 at Hyatt Regency

Sanctuary Cove.
“A lively entertainment schedule should entertain crowds daily,” said Mr Jenkins. There are bands, roving musicians, cooking displays, seminars and radio outside broadcasts.

Ticket sales for the Show are available online. Online tickets offer a small discount to gate ticket entry. One-day online general admission costs $A22 with concession online tickets at $A19. Children aged 14 years and under are free. For a full range of gate, two-day and four-day admission tickets, view the website on -sanctuarycoveboatshow.com.au

During the Show, there is no public parking on site however streamlined transport options include Park ‘n’ Ride, water taxi and ferry transfer, helicopter transfer and limousine and taxi drop off.

Luxury Superyachts yet to be Launched in 2010

May 09, 2010

Admiral Yachts

With an extra number of large superyachts already having been launched in 2010 there are still some very exciting new yachts which are as yet to be launched this year. Some of the luxury yacht new builds remain secret new build projects and their actual names have yet to be released to the public. Accordingly, until their actual launch, sea trials and official delivery to the yacht owner, many yachts are merely known by their project names.

By the end of 2010 the worldwide superyacht fleet is going to have changed quite markedly. The number, size and design advancements of luxury yachts to be launched (and already launched) this year has changed. This bulge in production began last year in 2009 and will continue into 2011. Some experts have suggested that we will never again see such a proliferation of new yachts being launched. It is certainly exciting times for the superyacht industry. There has been plenty of action for yacht designers, builders, managers, but also luxury yacht charters and yacht sales. Superyacht supply is for once keeping up with – and in many cases outstripping – superyacht owner demand.

The list of luxury yacht builders which are to launch large mega yachts includes companies one would certainly expect to be launching large superyachts, such as Oceanco, Feadship, Blohm + Voss, Benetti & Lurssen. However, this year there are also several less known and newcomer shipbuilder names that are to feature. These are yacht building companies than many will not heard of yet, but the names will certainly become more widely known after they launch their yachts, some of which are quite radical in design and imposing in size. They include ADM Shipyards, from the UAE, Marco Yachts from Chile and Fincantieri Yachts from Italy. Derecktor from the US also moves into the large megayacht scene with their Cakewalk motor yacht.

Here is a taste of some of the exciting superyachts over 50m as yet to be launched later in 2010:

SWIFT141 Superyacht Rednering

Superyacht SWIFT 141
Superyacht Swift 141 is a very large and interesting luxury yacht as yet to be launched in 2010. She has a LOA of 141m (462′ 7″) and a beam of 14.2m (46′ 7″). Motor yacht Swift 141 is being built by ADM Shipyards from the United Arab Emirates and her exterior styling was designed by the French company Pierrejean Design Studio. The boat’s naval architect was Koninklijke Schelde Groep BV (KSG) and her interior design was composed by Pierrejean Design Studio.

Yacht Swift is an entirely unique motor yacht in many ways. Her exterior design is unusual and original and technically she is actually a rebuild/refit motor yacht because a former Royal Dutch Navy Frigate’s steel hull has been used as a base. The frigate hull was originally designed and built for blue water speed. The hull is henceforth streamlined and easily driven and when mixed with a modern lightweight composite superstructure Swift 141 is indeed sure to be very swift indeed. Early projections give her an amazing speed of up to 26 knots which is truly remarkable for a superyacht of this size.

And of course size also means superior space onboard, and the luxury yacht SWIFT 141 is able to provide accommodation for up to 60 guests, whether the owner’s of even potentially charter guests along with up to 56 crew members on board.

Superyacht ORCA

Yacht ORCA
Project motor yacht Orca is a 96 m superyacht currently being built by the accomplished German Blohm + Voss Shipyard. Blohm + Voss is a luxury yacht builder which is synonymous with large technically challenging and completely custom superyachts. The UK company Michael Leach Design created the ORCA yacht’s exterior and interior design work and her interior styling is by Silverlining and Metrica. Superyacht Orca has an technologically advanced and futuristic superstructure with a steel hull, and also fascinatingly, a flowing curved superstructure which utilises an aluminium, composite and glass amalgamation.  Project Orca will also include two Cougar Marine custom tenders on her sports deck.

Superyacht Orca will accommodate 16 guests in six guest cabins and her two MTU 595 TE 70l diesel engines create a maximum speed of 19 knots and a 6000nm range at 14 knots. CharterWorld will cover the launch of project Yacht ORCA.

Yacht GIN TONIC II

Motor Yacht Gin Tonic II is full displacement 74.6 metre superyacht by Marco Yachts which will be launched later in 2010. Not a huge amount is as yet known about the M/Y Gin Tonic II yacht but her exterior styling was developed by a UK company called Michael Leach Designs with the interior design by Loro Piana Interiors (Misa Poggi).

Superyacht Gin Tonic II has the usual steel hull and aluminium superstructure of a modern new build superyacht. She is powered by twin caterpillar engines and will have a max speed of 15.5 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots.

Marco Yachts Motor Yacht Z

Yacht Z

Another Marco Yachts superyacht Z is 85.3 m in length overall and is currently in construction. Ken Freivokh Design is responsible for a very interesting exterior and interior design of the superyacht Z which is reminiscent of motor yacht Vibrant Curiosity with a magnificent a vertical glass ribbon atrium spanning five decks amidships on the superstructure. This form looks very good on the eye but perhaps more importantly enables natural light and sea views to flood into the yacht.

A beam of 14.8 metres gives motor yacht Z offers a spacious interior as well as exterior. 14 guests are accommodated in seven suites with a configuration comprising an owner’s suite, two VIP cabins and four double cabins. Superyacht Z is has a top speed of 17.5 knots as produced by twin Caterpillar diesel engines. ”Z” is certainly another very interesting superyacht due for launch and CharterWorld news will keep you updated.

Motor Yacht Marco Yachts 231

Marco Yachts 231 is another Marco Yachts superyacht from the shipyard which is based in Chile. She is an 85 metre motor yacht with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and exterior design also by UK-based yacht designer Ken Freivokh Design.

Fincantieri Yachts 134m

The Fincantieri Yachts 134m

The luxury motor yacht Fincantieri is the biggest of all the yachts yet to be launched in 2010. With a 134 m LOA and a beam of 18.5 metres the new superyacht is expected to be launched in the latter half of 2010. The ship is currently in build at Fincantieri Yachts a formally commercial and military focused Italian shipbuilder. Fincantieri Yachts as an autonomous division of a larger company but is totally focussed on building private luxury yachts larger than 70 metres (230ft). The yacht’s exterior design and engineering were by Espen Oeino and her interior design is by Reymond Langton Design. Taking 3 years to build the Fincantieri 134 yacht is one of the most technically advance superyachts currently under construction.

The seven deck Fincantieri 134m mega yacht will have two helicopter landing platforms, storage for a large submarine and a huge internal sea water pool, which can be adapted to be used for tender docking.

Other yacht concepts and projects by Fincantieri Yachts include “Project Prospect” 70 metres (230ft), “Project Goldmine” 75 metres (243 ft), “Project Wave” 85 metres (279ft), “Project Marco Polo” 102 metres (335ft) and “Project Morpheus” 115 metres (378ft).

Oceanco Yacht Y706

The 86m Oceanco Yacht Y706

The Oceanco Y706 yacht is an 86 metre superyacht with exterior design by Nuvolari & Lenard and naval architecture by Azure Naval Architects. Motor yacht Y706 is scheduled to be launched later in 2010.

Oceanco Yachts is a company that works with world class designers in continuing to improve the yachts they build. Each one is quantifiably better than the last. This sometimes comes with almost radical leaps in design and technology, as seen with ALFA NERO, whilst in addition there are perpetual small improvements which combine to produce superior yachts in almost all areas.

Oceanco Y706

One interesting thing about the new Oceanco Y706 superyacht is her performance. Large yachts with long waterlines are capable of high speeds and yacht Y706 has an impressive top speed projection of 18.50 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots. Although not super fast it should be remembered that this is a typically volumous Oceanco motor yacht with good height and with a beam of 13.80 metres providing a capacious interior and exterior deck space. Her official after launch sea trial and testing will confirm her true speed capabilities.

Also interesting about the Y706 yacht is the powerful exterior design work as produced by the now famous Nuvolari & Lenard. In keeping with the Oceanco tendency, the megayacht has a swimming pool on her aft deck which can conveniently be transformed into a full helipad.

The Y706 Oceanco yacht has accommodation for 12 guests, including a now usual large separate master suite with study and private deck area. CharterWorld will report when on further details when the Oceanco Y706 yacht is launched.

87 m Feadship Yacht

The 87m Feadship motor yacht also to be launched in 2010 is only known, as yet, by her superyacht project name: yacht 1002 (ex project Makkum). What is known is that this Feadship superyacht was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects (exterior styling and naval architecture) in collaboration with the Dutch yacht designer Sinot Yacht Design (interior design and styling). The other known quantities are her build material (steel hull and aluminium superstructure) and that she will also have an impressive top speed as driven by her quadruple MTU diesel engines (4 x 16V 4000 M90 producing 3650hp each and a total of 14600hp).

Abeking Yacht Project #6483
The Abeking 6483 motor yacht project is 78.43 m in length and the superyacht is due for her launch in 2010 by Abeking & Rasmussen Shipyards from Germany. Reymond Langton Design is responsible for the Abeking 6483’s exterior and interior design.

This superyacht new build is very secret and little else will be known until she has actually been launched and delivered to her owner. CharterWorld News will keep you informed of developments. Some of the Abeking & Rasmussen superyacht’s further specifications: Max Speed: 16.50 knots – Cruising Speed: 14.0 knots LOA: 78.43m (257′ 4″) – Max Draft: 3.2m (10′ 6″).

Yacht Amnesia IV

Motor Yacht Amnesia IV
Amnesia IV Yacht is a handsome starlight plumb bow style 65m (213.25ft) superyacht with an especially flowing and well balanced contemporary profile. She is due to be launched in 2010 by the Italian yacht building company Benetti Yachts. Redman Whiteley Dixon have very successfully designed both exterior and interior design and Benetti was the in-house Naval Architect for the Amnesia IV superyacvht .

Benetti has built a steel hull and aluminium superstructure for superyacht Amnesia IV and the yacht will be able to a 15 knots maximum speed giving a range of 5000 nm at cruise speed. Two CAT 3516B diesels produce 9040hp.

The yacht was commissioned by an experienced superyacht owner and the new Amnesia IV yacht has specifically laid out accommodation for up to 10 guests. CharterWorld News will cover further information when she is launched.

Benetti Yacht FB 249

The Benetti FB 249 is another Benetti motor of 61.50m (201.77ft) LOA which is to be launched in 2010 by Benetti yachts.

Motor Yacht Katie Sue II
Lurssen Yachts of Germany have so far been keeping Superyacht Katie Sue II under tight wraps. What is known is that she is a 60m (196.85ft) motor yacht which is due to be launched in 2010 by the quality shipbuilder, Lurssen Yachts. Katie Sue II is a yacht with an interior which was designed by Glade Johnson Design and an exterior styling as created by Espen Oeino.

The Lurssen Yacht Katie Sue II provides accommodation for up to 12 guests in her 6 guest suites whist having the potential to run with a crew contingent of up to 15.

ADMIRAL Yachts 73

Motor Yacht Admiral 73m

The Admiral 73 Admiral Mariotti yacht project has been designed and is currently being built thanks to a collaboration between AMY (a joint venture company with Cantieri Navali Lavagna and Cantieri T. Mariotti) along with the technical department being Luca Dini Design studio. We have already seen a very successful superyacht called Sea Force One produced by a similar team. The Admiral 73 yacht is also a progression and evolution in design through the 54, 58, 64 meter Admiral superyachts.

The new Admiral 73 yacht is a five deck superyacht with an imposing volume and beam (13.20) producing plenty of space inside and out.
