The 141 metre (463 feet) sailing yacht Dream Symphony is a staysail schooner, which will blend classical styling with contemporary design. S/Y Dream Symphony will not only be the largest private sailing yacht ever constructed, but will also be of an all wood construction, incorporating some composite materials and steel in the design.

The project is a collaboration between the builders Dream Ship Victory, Ken Freivokh Design and Dykstra & Partners Naval Architects. The yacht is currently in construction at new purpose-built facilities at the Dream Ship Victory yard in Turkey.

The engineering team from SP-High Modulus will be working with Dykstra & Partners initially on the finite element analysis (FEA) of the structure covering the global strength of the design. The FEA will incorporate the properties and scantling of the wood, composites and steel using the team’s knowledge and experience of composite engineering. Detailed engineering of the construction details for the wood structure will follow the FEA.

Graham Harvey, General Manager Engineered Structures said of the project, “We are delighted to be providing engineering services for this prestigious and unique project. For a project of this scale with epoxy cold moulded construction, our engineering experience in composite materials really helps when the structure utilises materials of very different properties”.
