Phuket Boat Show contributes to the growth of Andaman Marine Triangle

January 30, 2012

Phuket Island, belonging to the best yacht charter locations, is at the centre of Asia‘s growing marine leisure industry . It is one of the top five cruising destinations in the world and is the centre of the emerging ‘Andaman Marine Triangle’.

PIMEX 2012 – where luxury boats and lifestyle attract buyers from around the world

PIMEX 2012 – where luxury boats and lifestyle attract buyers from around the world

Consisting of Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi provinces, the Andaman Marine Triangle is home to some of the most stunning sailing grounds in the world, and location of choice for the filming of many international blockbuster movies.

The coastline of the Andaman Marine Triangle, and associated marine leisure industry, is the single largest asset for the area’s tourism industry, the promotion of which is lead by Asia’s largest in-water boat show, the Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX). Held 29th March to 1st April 2012, PIMEX is to be held at the award-winning Royal Phuket Marina on the Island’s east coast.

Phuket is the gateway to the Andaman Marine Triangle with more than 200 direct international flights weekly from major tourist markets in Asia and Europe. The three provinces share the same coastline and marine environment, and together have become the marine playground for the rich and famous – the wealthy, the celebrities – and tourists from around the world.

With its long established and well developed infrastructure, Phuket holds a pivotal position in the Andaman Marine Triangle, and is home to four world-class marinas with a capacity of over 750 yachts.

As reported by Channel News Asia, “The amount of private wealth in Asia is estimated to triple to US$16 trillion by 2015, according to Swiss private bank Julius Baer’s annual wealth report done jointly with CLSA.” It is this growth in regional wealth, combined with the desire of boat owners wanting to relocate from traditional cruising grounds, that continues to fuel the growth of the marine leisure industry in the region.

In line with this growth, large-scale marine infrastructure in Phuket continues to develop. Further investment by established Phuket marinas is expected to be over THB500m, and a likely expansion of berth capacity of over 20%, over the next five years.

PIMEX plays an integral role in creating and stimulating demand for marine products and services in Asia. The leading consumer show in Asia, over 5,500 visitors attended the 2011 Show to view the USD100 million of boats on display, and marine and lifestyle offerings.

PMEX connects buyers with sellers in the marine and luxury lifestyle space, and with the largest in-water display in the region, allows potential buyers to view boats first hand. International buyers often then choose to leave their boats in Phuket’s marinas so they can enjoy the facilities and surrounding cruising grounds at their leisure.

The trend of marina growth can be seen expanding from Phuket to the Andaman Marine Triangle, with two new marinas in Krabi – Krabi Boat Lagoon and Krabi River View – and another – Port Takola Marina – in the pipeline, adding almost 400 berths to the triangle when complete.

Over one billion baht of marina infrastructure development is expected in the Andaman Marine Triangle over the next five years.

This bodes well for the continued growth of the region’s marine industry, as marinas in the Asian region are filling up. PIMEX is positioned as a key marketing and promotional tool for Phuket and beyond, helping to position the Andaman Marine Triangle as the marine leisure playground in Asia.

PIMEX showcases Phuket Island, Thailand and the Asia region to the marine leisure world globally. Attracting an international clientelle, organisers confirm markets of growing importance for the show and for the regional marine industry in particular, are Russia and China, with Thai buyers also on the increase.

“We welcomed over 15 visitor nationalities to PIMEX 2011 and of particular interest was the growing numbers of Russians and Chinese. Also, a number of exhibitors noted a growing trend of Thais showing interest in buying into the marine leisure lifestyle,” commented  PIMEX Show Director, Andy Dowden.

PIMEX 2012 exhibitor, Matthew Steinert of Prout International (China), added, “PIMEX is a key consumer-show boat show in Asia and we are looking forward to a successful 2012 Show.”

Targetting High Net Worth Individuals and marine leisure enthusiasts, top international boat brands on display and represented at the Boat Show, include Azimut, Bavaria, Beneteau, Boston Whaler, Elan, Fairline, Feeling, Ferretti Yachts, Formula, Fountaine Pajot, Galeon, Gulf Craft, Hanse, Jeanneau, Majesty, Monterey Boats, Nautitech Catamarans, Nautor Swan, Oryx, Pershing, Prestige Yachts, Princess, Privilege, Prout, Pursuit, Riva, Riviera, Sea Ray, Seawind Catamarans, Selene Ocean Trawler, Silvercraft, Sunseeker, Trawler Catamarans, and Tiara Yachts. Alongside them will be leading marine brands and lifestyle products including luxury real estate and marina developments.

“We are seeing more interest in exhibitors from China, Australia and New Zealand in particular this year. PIMEX has become the boat show in Asia to showcase boats, marine and lifestyle products to a large international audience,” added Dowden.

New Attractions at 2012 Sanctuary Cove Boat Show

January 30, 2012

The 24th annual Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, held in May 24-27, 2012, has been supercharged and amped to the max with a large number of new attractions to deliver outstanding value for money for visitors to the show.

Sanctuary Cove Boat Show 2011

Sanctuary Cove Boat Show 2011

As well as new infrastructure, with the superyacht pavilion replaced by a brand new marquee and greater flexibility for exhibitors, there will be a host of demonstrations and marine-themed activities to ignite visitors‟ imaginations.

Along with dozens of world and national launches of boats of all sizes, equipment and all manner of ideas for enjoying the great Aussie ocean and waterways lifestyle, the line-up of awe-inspiring show-stoppers aims to bring a new generation of visitors to the Boat Show, while thrilling loyal show-goers with world-class exhibits.

The Cove Tavern has opened and is destined to be the show‟s social hub boasting good old fashioned pub-grub with an “urban edge”.

The Cove Tavern is the latest venture by one of the Gold Coast‟s most experienced restaurateurs, Max Alfieri who is the owner-operator of the popular IoEsco restaurant in The Marine Village. His vision for the Tavern is “a place where visitors and locals can relax and enjoy a traditional pub menu, complete with bangers and mash, shepherd‟s pie, chicken Parmigiana, fish and chips and fisherman‟s baskets”.

“We are thrilled that exhibitors, visitors and guests will have a brand new venue for socialising and „sealing the deal‟,” says Sue Thomson, General Manager Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.

“2012 will certainly be a year for new additions – a new Tavern, reworked venue for optimal display and traffic through the show, and a diverse program to give the show an added boost in its 24th year.”

For the first time in Australia, visitors will be able to behold the gravity-defying JetLev R200, the coolest way to hit the waves! Drawing inspiration from the James Bond flick “Thunderball”, the JetLev is winning devotees around the world since its US launch last year. Shooting 30ft (9m) in the air with just a hose linking it to the water, the JetLev will be on display throughout the four-day event.

Also, on show for the first time Downunder, the incredible Seabreacher X from Innespace – the latest and most advanced submersible watercraft. This exciting new version has an aggressive Shark-style body. The X model boasts a 260hp supercharged engine, propelling the vessel to a top speed of 43 Knots (80km/h) on the surface and 22 Knots (40 km/h) below. The Seabreacher X can sustain high speed dives and then breach the surface, launching the entire vessel clear out of the water. The custom tuned exhaust system also gives the vessel a throaty growl as it tears across the surface.

For those who want to admire the views, above and below the water, there‟s the Ego, “compact semi-submarine” from Korea, heralded as the most environmentally-friendly and commercially viable concept of its kind. The developers are looking for international distributors, so Sanctuary Cove could be the place for tourism operators or researchers to get on board!

Due to popular demand, the „Women on Water” program will be back for another year, with the glamorous “High Tea on the High Seas” concept combining fashion and fine jewellery on cruises around the Broadwater, as well as cooking and interiors seminars and hands-on practical experiences such as Skipper Training Sessions.

65m Heesen FDHF yacht YN 16465′s superstructure and hull joined

January 27, 2012
Heesen Yachts are proud to announce that last year, in December, 2011 the hull and the superstructure of the 65m YN 16465 Heesen FDHF superyacht were joined together. The construction of the hull and superstructure of Heesen YN 16465 yacht started in December 2011 at the facility in Oss, and marked the culmination of years of meticulous planning.

Frank Laupman, from Omega Architects, who are responsible for the exterior design, was delighted: “Being able to see the joining of the hull and superstructure is a great thing for me – who drew the first sketch that was just some 40cm long. Today I can finally see that the lines I sketched on paper more than two years ago, work in reality.”

The revolutionary Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) was developed by Van Oossanen and Associates and  was very keen to see the results of their work: “It is always exciting to see a project materialize. However, on a project like this, of this size, with so much effort put in the development prior to construction, it is three times the excitement. To see the high level of quality Heesen has put in the hull construction, and it being combined with the superstructure for the first time, is very thrilling.”

The FDHF uses innovative techniques in the construction of its decks, bulkheads and part of the superstructure plating. 300mm wide extruded aluminium plates are welded together using a ‘friction-stir’ technique to form huge plates 2,5 metres by 12 metres in size. Essentially this means the plates are welded together without adding welding material: this method, developed by NASA, has the enormous benefit of creating less heat during the welding process. The result is a large plate with uniform mechanical properties and much fairer and smoother construction. As ever, the famously high quality Heesen building process begins at the very first rung of construction.

65m Heesen FDHF yacht YN 16465 - Dick Holthuis

65m Heesen FDHF yacht YN 16465 - Dick Holthuis

Dickie Bannenberg of Bannenberg and Rowell Design, responsible for the interior design of the 65m motor yacht YN 16465 comments: “Looking at the metal work you can sense the precision at the yard and see the result of immaculate teamwork. Even sitting in the water in bare metal, the yacht exudes speed and intent. We can’t wait for our interior to go in.”

When combined with sophisticated naval architecture, the improved construction techniques result in a vessel that is 30% more efficient than a round-bilge motor yacht. The Heesen 65m FDHF superyacht’s advanced design combining a narrow beam with a specific hull form results in a very low wave profile over the entire speed range, while also improving its sea-keeping and manoeuvrability. This provides a very positive impact on the cost of running the yacht, as well as the lowering of its environmental footprint due to reduced engine emissions.

Fabio Ermetto, Sales and Marketing Director at Heesen Yachts sums up the project: “Heesen Yachts is well known in the yachting industry for being a shipyard that likes challenges. We are proud to be the first shipyard to build a yacht featuring this innovative hull configuration, the Fast Displacement Hull Form by Van Oossanen, which is the perfect platform for creating a new luxury yacht in which increased performance and reduced environmental impact begin with the hull design. It is very exciting, one year after the keel laying ceremony, to see that the project is taking shape!”
65m Heesen FDHF superyacht YN 16465 is now in the outfitting stage in the enlarged and renewed dry dock in shed no. 5 at the Heesen facility in Oss, the Netherlands. Her delivery is scheduled for June 2013. Join in the excitement and buzz surrounding YN 16465 and the FDHF by watching the time lapse “making of” movie as well as the documentary showcasing the joining of hull and superstructure on the Heesen YouTube channel.

David Schor, a wonderful marine artist with an exceptional talent

January 27, 2012

Every day we publish articles that talk about wonderful and unique luxury yachts from around the globe, describing some of them in the smallest of details, yet very seldom do we talk about the art that has been chosen to give that special touch and personal feel to the vessels, that many times represent the second home to the Owners. A wonderful art will make even the most discern charter guests feel right at home. We are not going to talk about any private or charter yacht in particular, but an artist that captures the beauty of the sea and the emotions of sailing. David Schor is an artist who has created thousands of paintings for clients from around the world, with a variety that only few artists can produce.

2012 RORC Caribbean 600 yacht race with start on 20th February

January 27, 2012

With less than one month to go, to the fourth edition of the RORC Caribbean 600, the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s 2012 programme starts with a sensational cast in Antigua. The RORC Caribbean 600 is a truly international affair, with well over 500 competitors from at least 24 different nations taking part. More than 30 beautiful yachts are expected to participate in a high-speed, action-packed yacht race around 11 Caribbean islands.

There can be few sporting events that can boast such a worldwide appeal with sailors taking part from all over the world including: Antigua, Australia, Austria, Canada, Cayman Islands, Croatia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Puerto Rico, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, St. Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, Turkey and the United States of America.

This astounding diversity of nationalities is matched only by the astonishingarray of yachts and personalities. The largest yacht competing this year is the magnificent sailing yacht Hetairos with a waterline length of 200′. Hetairos superyacht is the world’s largest carbon composite sailing yacht. The 29 crew on board is composed of many Volvo Ocean Race, America’s Cup and Jules Verne around the world veterans. The luxury yacht Hetairos is among the favourites to take line honours, but there are several other yachts more than capable of finishing in front.

In 2011 American George David skippered Rambler 100 yacht to smash the monohull course record, taking line honours and overall victory. David’s team is back, this time with the Reichel Pugh 90, Rambler yacht and they are unlikely to give up the title without a fight. The Spanish Volvo 70, Gran Jotti will be dwarfed by the super yacht Hetairos, but the former Telefonica Black has a venomous turn of speed and is quite capable of out pacing the entire fleet. On board there is a huge wealth of talent in the form of Spanish America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race sailors. These three are likely to be contenders for line honours, but overall victory under IRC is far more difficult to predict. A hot contender is Niklas Zennstrom’s Judel/Vrolijk 72 Rán yacht, which will be making its debut in the RORC Caribbean 600.

Rán navigator, Steve Hayles is one of the world’s most experienced offshore sailors but this will be the first time he has tackled the intricate course around the central Caribbean, “For me it’s very refreshing to tackle a new race and the Caribbean 600 is a real fascination,” explained Hayles. “It’s unlike any other offshore race in that the average leg is only about 40 miles and for a navigator there is a lot to consider. Normally, a race is all about the weather and strategy but in addition to all that, this race takes you back to the basic problem of navigating around so many rocks and islands. Looking through all the legs, there is a broad mixture of sailing angles; there is a fair bit of reaching, but it is wrong to think that is not a challenge, especially with the speed sensitivity of modern high-performance boats. The course is more like a whole stream of complex coastal races. I have to say that it is a pretty unique race.”

A dazzling variety of yachts crewed by some of the world’s finest will be racing this year. However, not all of the competitors are seasoned professionals. One of the smallest yachts competing this year is J/39 Sleeper, which will be raced two-handed by a father and son team. Jonty Layfield and son Jack are both RORC members and hale from Brighton, UK.

Last year with a full crew, Jonty’s won class at Antigua Sailing Week, “Sailing Two-Handed with my son, I don’t expect to be very competitive, we are not going to go flat out but treat the race more like a delivery trip,” admitted Jonty. “I have raced double-handed with my son back in England and I have been sailing with Jack since he was about five years old, we are more like friends than father and son. The great thing about sailing is that you have to get on with it; you can’t have any histrionics. Jack is working in Brazil at the moment and the RORC Caribbean 600 is a great way to spend a few days together.”

Close duels are expected right through the fleet, none more so than in the Class 40s where a hard fought and close encounter is expected. Tradewind sailing provides perfect conditions for Class 40s, with long reaches and downwind legs, these pocket rockets are capable of surfing at speeds of up to 25 knots. Peter Harding’s 40 Degrees yacht has Hannah Jenner as skipper, the only female to skipper the Clipper Round the World Race.

Hannah was in fine form last year, gaining a podium position in the Class 40 Transat Jacques Vabre, “Antigua is a beautiful place to start the season with some winter sunshine and I have heard that Antigua Yacht Club provides a great party!” smiled Hannah. ” The race course has plenty of activity with sail changes and the competition should be really close. Making the right tactical decisions will also be very important if we are to be the fastest Class 40 around the track. I am really looking forward to the race.”

RORC Chief Executive Eddie Warden Owen believes that the RORC Caribbean 600 is especially attractive to larger yachts, however the ethos of the club maintains equal status to every participant.  “A wide spectrum of yachts and competitors has decided that this is an event that is not to be missed. The club is delighted that people from all over the world want to take part. There is a mixture of world class sailors and corinthian enthusiasts, but they all have one thing in common, a passion for offshore racing.”

“This average length of yacht for this year’s entry is over 70′. When the Royal Ocean Racing Club started this race in 2009, we felt it would appeal to larger yachts and that has proved to be the case. This year we have a significant number of Racing Maxis, Super Yachts and Spirit of Tradition yachts. However, every yacht competing in the RORC Caribbean 600 is governed by the same set of rules. All of the competitors receive a warm welcome from the Antigua Yacht Club, regardless of their finish time or place. Since 1925, The Royal Ocean Racing Club has promoted offshore racing for all and in many ways the RORC Caribbean 600 typifies that cause.”
