Riviera 75 Enclosed Flybridge Yacht THE GODFATHER competes in Riviera NZ and Club Marine 2013 Invitational Marlin Tournament

May 13, 2013

Riviera’s flagship, the magnificent 75 Enclosed Flybridge yacht The Godfather, participated in the annual Riviera NZ and Club Marine 2013 Invitational Marlin Tournament, taking place at Whangaroa Harbour, New Zealand.

The Godfather yacht is the first and largest Enclosed Flybridge ever produced by Australia’s largest and most awarded luxury boat builder. Owners Rick and Lesley Longdon took delivery of their third Riviera last year and had been looking forward to the annual game fishing challenge, an event that the Longdons have competed in since the tournament’s inception in 2000.

Sitting in the game chair in the 75’s enormous cockpit, Lesley was thrilled to land the first Marlin for the boat on day two of the tournament. “It was a fantastic tournament.  We are all Riviera owners so it is a fun, competitive event and it’s all about the camaraderie,” Rick said.

There were clear skies and light 15 to 20 knot breezes on day one of the tournament with three Marlin tagged and released to the teams from Head Quarters, Aurora, and Ika Loa. On day two the wind had picked up to 20 to 35 knots and an uncomfortable two to three metre swell but this didn’t deter the team on board The Godfather who tagged and released the first Marlin for their boat.

Unfortunately, the perfect conditions on day three weren’t enough to encourage the fish to bite but all in all it was a very successful tournament with a total of five Marlin and one Blue Marlin tagged and released over the three day tournament. The Blue Marlin weighed in by the team on board Whatever regrettably did not meet the IGFA qualifications and could not be counted as a tournament fish but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the Riviera teams who reflected on the camaraderie and fishing highlights over happy hour drinks back at Kingfish Lodge.

All-new BOUGAINVILLE Yacht nears completion at Claasen Shipyards

May 13, 2013

The modern 72 ft racer/cruiser Bougainville yacht nears her completion at the prominent Dutch builder, Claasen Shipyards. Sailing yacht Bougainville incorporates the very latest technologies as well as most advanced yacht building methods.

Her keel is fitted with an hydraulic lifting system, giving the yacht a depth of 2.30 m and 3.90 m, respectively. Luxury yacht Bougainville is being built to the MCA code for sailing yachts up to 24 m and will be CE-A certified.

The brief from Bougainville yacht’s owner required Claasen Shipyards to create a yacht that will perform equally well as a cruiser and a racer. Weight plays a crucial role therefore hence the choice for an aluminium hull and composite deck and superstructure. In addition, the interior is built of foam /sandwich panels to further reduce weight. And the Claasen craftsmen individually weigh every single item that is installed onboard.

Sleek and modern
Berret Racoupeau Yacht Design is responsible for both the naval architecture and the exterior profile of this performance cruiser. Impressive features of the exterior include the sleek, modern lines and the large windows in the superstructure, which bathe the spacious interior with light. The reverse stern gives the design a sporty appearance and is equipped with a large hydraulically operated door.

When open, the latter serves as a lovely swim platform and a place from which to launch the tender, stored in the lazarette. The door itself is made from composite material in order to reduce weight and is watertight when closed thanks to its inflatable seal.

Sailing yacht Bougainville’s cockpit is furnished with a large Bimini that offers welcome shade when sailing in sunnier climates. This Bimini can easily be stored completely out of sight in the yacht’s superstructure.

Bougainville yacht is rigged with a carbon mast from Southern Spars, which is incredibly strong despite its low weight. The main sail has a surface area of 132 m2 and features slab reefing with reef locks.

Luxury yacht Bougainville also carries carbon EC6 carbons stays: Offering the ideal combination of strength, stiffness and elasticity, this is the ideal rig for a yacht of this calibre. The lines and the other running rigging can all be controlled from the two steering stations in the cockpit. The winches are hydraulically driven.

A superyacht interior
The interior of Bougainville yacht has been created by Rhoades Young Design, which has achieved global fame for its work with other leading yards such as Royal Huisman and Vitters. Superyacht influences are immediately visible where the large windows and exquisite materials create the allure of a much larger vessel, and meet the standards you would expect from a Claasen yacht. The entire interior is finished in French walnut with a subtle maple edging.

The layout sees an owner’s suite and two guest cabins located forward, each with their own shower and toilet. Amidships is the voluminous saloon, dinette and navigation corner. The galley is located aft, along with a two-person crew cabin and toilet.

Below is a choice of the superb charter yachts built by Claasen Shipyards.

New 92m mega yacht Project LUMEN by Adam Voorhees

May 13, 2013

The breath-taking 92-metre mega yacht Project LUMEN is the latest concept, presented by Adam Voorhees. Conceptually, motor yacht LUMEN is based on a greater sensibility and understanding for the relationships between the private and common spaces, how these spaces are negotiated by the owner, guests and crew, as well as the dynamics created between the external and internal spaces; all resulting in a maximum enjoyment of living on the sea.

The form language and programatic layout of the 92m superyacht Project Lumen are defined by twin monolithic structural towers intersected by and juxtaposed against fluid, undulating surfaces. The massive towers create a sense of drama and scale both appropriate and necessary to a yacht of this size. The undulating surfaces also inform the onboard circulation patterns while reinforcing the relationship to the sea.

Close attention as been paid to the transition between the interior and exterior experience, integrating protected yet open space with a focus on sweeping views. Designed for privacy while still allowing a connection to the sea, LUMEN yacht boasts multiple opportunities for both formal and informal living across multiple levels.

As well, the central lobby surrounds a large, open atrium extending through all decks, with natural light spilling in through the glass bottom of the spa located above. The glass walled pool penetrates the main deck and offers a spectacular backdrop for the expansive beach club and full spa facilities. A fully enclosed helicopter hangar is directly and easily accessible by the massive owners suite.

May 13, 2013

The beautiful 30,48-metre FC100 sailing yacht Nomade IV left the Maxi Dolphin shipyard in Erbusco, Italy to be transported to Marghera, near Venice, where construction works will continue. Nomade IV yacht is set to be delivered to her new owner in mid-July 2013.

Designed by the French naval architects Finot-Conq, superyacht Nomade IV has sleek waterlines with her hull and superstructure built entirely of carbon fibre and Nomex, which, with 51 tons of displacement, will guarantee outstanding sailing performance.

The “racing” style of the Nomade IV yacht is given by the shape of the hull with its prominent hard chine running from bow to stern, 9 tons of ballast on each side, lifting keel and two rudders.

The “cruiser” element of the Nomade IV yacht is expressed by her stylishly minimalist interior layout, designed by Pierre Frutschi and developed and implemented by Maxi Dolphin’s design office in close collaboration with the owner.

The elegant living spaces and cabins, designed and planned by the architect Pierre Forgia’ of Finot-Conq architects, are very comfortable and the luxury yacht Nomade IV can accommodate up to 12 guests in addition to the crew.

Following tests and sea trials (800 miles of sea trials are planned), an intense season of racing is planned for the FC100 yacht Nomade IV, starting from the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo, Sardinia.

Francis Joyon and his trimaran yacht IDEC to visit Dennis Conner’s North Cove

May 12, 2013

One of the best single-handed sailors in the world, Francis Joyon, is expected to visit Dennis Conner’s North Cove in New York today, May 12, with his extreme trimaran yacht “IDEC”.

Joyon will be berthed in the marina for a week or longer as he waits for a weather window to challenge the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Record.

IDEC yacht is 97 ft in length and one of the fastest ocean-going trimarans in the world. In 2008, Joyon and IDEC set a new Single-Handed Round the World Record of 57 days, 13 hours and 34 minutes, beating the previous record by 14 days.

Joyon was last at North Cove in 2005 when he arrived to attempt the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Record. He succeeded in that attempt, smashing the previous record but also losing his sailing yacht IDEC after crossing the finish line. His feat was so inspirational for local sailors that they established the “Atlantic Cup” as a symbol of the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Record.

America’s Cup Director tasked with running fact-finding mission

May 11, 2013

Set to work on a review into the circumstances surrounding the capsize of the Artemis Racing AC72 yacht on Thursday, America’s Cup Director Iain Murray says consultation with stakeholders is already underway.

On Tuesday, Murray has scheduled a formal meeting when all four teams competing in the Summer of Racing – ORACLE TEAM USA, Artemis Racing (SWE), Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Challenge (ITA) – will be in San Francisco.

“The meeting with the teams is a crucial next step,” Murray said. “We need to establish an open flow of information to ensure this review meets its goals of fact-finding and putting us in a position to recommend changes, if necessary.”

One aspect of the review will involve study of all data that was captured at the time of the incident.

“Once we have the information, the basic facts, all the data, then we will be able to re-build the entire chain of events and start to assess why this incident resulted in a tragic loss of life,” he said.

On Saturday, Artemis Racing released a statement: Artemis Racing is in the process of conducting a thorough review and analysis of this week’s accident. As a part of this review, Artemis Racing is sharing and exchanging data and information with concurrent work being performed by America’s Cup and the San Francisco Police Department. Until this process is complete, any conclusions being made about the events that led to the boat’s capsizing and its tragic outcome are pure speculation. Out of respect for Bart’s memory and his family, we ask that the broader sailing community and others reserve judgment until all the facts are known, and not persist in unnecessary rumor. We again thank everyone for their continued support and thoughts during this difficult time.

America’s Cup Director Iain Murray to lead review following tragic death of Artemis Racing crewmember

May 10, 2013

America’s Cup Director Iain Murray will conduct a review into the events surrounding the capsize of Artemis Racing’s first catamaran yacht AC72 as well as the subsequent tragic loss of crewman Andrew Simpson.

During training on San Francisco Bay yesterday, Artemis Racing capsized in winds between 18 and 20 knots. The boat broke apart and Simpson, 36, became trapped.

Support vessels on site rushed to recover the crew from the water and it quickly became apparent that Simpson was missing. After he was retrieved, CPR was administered by trained professionals, both afloat and at the dock, for more than 20 minutes. Approximately 30 minutes after the incident, he was pronounced dead.

“It was less than 24 hours ago when this accident happened and the pain is still very acute for everyone involved. Our condolences go out to Andrew’s family and friends, and the members of Artemis Racing,” said Stephen Barclay, chief executive of America’s Cup Event Authority, at a press briefing this morning.

“It’s too early to speculate about the causes of the accident. Iain will conduct the review and will liaise with the San Francisco Police Department and the United States Coast Guard and any other third-party experts as necessary,” Barclay said.

Murray is a veteran ocean racer and America’s Cup sailor, having been part of four America’s Cup campaigns. His knowledge of the sport is thorough and he declined to speculate on the causes, or prejudge the results of the review.

“All we know is that the boat ended up capsized, the hulls upside down, broken in half,” said Murray. “The split seconds from when the boat was sailing upwind to the pictures that we’ve all seen (of the boat turned upside down and broken apart), there’s a gap in there and that’s what we need to fill in and find out what happened.”

Artemis Racing chase boats were assisted in the recovery effort by members of ORACLE TEAM USA, Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Challenge 2013, all of whom were on site observing the training session.

“This is a tragic reminder of the challenges faced by sailors on the water, whether they’re commercial sailors or recreational or professional sailors,” said Captain Matt Bliven of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco, which will liaise with Murray on the review.

“It also underlines the importance of adequate training and proper gear to minimize the impact when something goes wrong. That’s something we’ve consistently seen from the America’s Cup organization and the participating teams – their level of preparation and training to avert these types of mishaps,” Bliven said.

No timetable has been placed on completing the review. The San Francisco Police Department is also conducting its own review as normal procedure when there is loss of life.

“Iain’s going to conduct his review and it’ll be thorough,” said Barclay. “I have every expectation that we will host a spectacular event here in the summer, but I’m not going to prejudge it. Iain will conduct his review and we will see the outcome and recommendations of that.”
