Southern Spars’ rigged yachts once again dominated the awards, with sailing yacht Vertigo taking top spot as she was crowned the 2012 sailing superyacht of the year and best sailing yacht 40m+ size range. Southern’ rigged Vertigo, built by Alloy Yachts was selected on the basis of her ‘extremely stylish exterior lines, combined with the extremely high build quality and the solutions to the engineering questions which this complex design from Philippe Briand had posed. Vertigo provides the optimum balance between performance sailing and world cruising, with neither compromising the other.’ – The Judging Panel

Luxury yacht Vertigo is the longest vessel built to date by New Zealand based boat builders Alloy Yachts. She is an astounding 67.2m and is equipped with the latest technology in both racing and cruising performance. She has a full Southern Spars rig package, a 64m main mast and a 48.10m mizzen mast equipped with EC6+ hybrid rigging.

It is with no surprise after taking line honours victory in the Transatlantic Superyacht regatta and the Caribbean 600 that the sailing yacht Hetairos was awarded the judges’ Special Award in the 40m+ size range, for her notable contribution to the technical advancement of sailing superyachts. The 197ft (66.7m) Hetairos has set many new benchmarks in superyacht construction. It is, for example, the largest yacht that has been built from carbon-fibre composite to date.

Hetairos superyacht sports a full Southern Spars’ rig package, a 62.5m high modulus main mast with a Code Zero lock that is capable of locking up to 40 tonnes – the biggest Southern Spars has yet designed.

The 30m (98ft) Southern Spars rigged and Yachting Developments built composite pilothouse sloop Antares III won the award for the “Best Sailing Yacht 30-40m”. ‘Antares III provided everything that made cruising a pleasure for her owner, including good sailing performance, a calm, understated interior, an ability to manage the yacht with just three crew, and good interconnectivity between helm station, cockpit and pilothouse.’ – The Judging Panel

Superyacht Antares III is 25-30% lighter than similar vessels built in Aluminium and sports a 42.7m tall high modulus carbon fibre rig with EC6 continuous composite rigging and a Southern Furl boom, allowing her to carry an impressive 4,876sq ft of sail area up wind.

It has been ten years since Southern Spars’ rigged sailing yacht Destination Fox Harbr was a finalist at the international Superyacht Design Awards and after an extensive refit she is back; crowned ‘Best refitted Superyacht 2012’. ‘Her cleverly conceived refit…not only brought her up to date but changed the whole aura of the yacht to create a relaxed, sophisticated and comfortable interior suited to the lifestyle of her new owners.’ – The Judging Panel.

The 2012 World Superyacht Awards have been yet another great triumph for Southern Spars, expressing the quality and caliber of projects that the company is involved with. Southern Spars would like to congratulate all of the designers and boat yards that contributed to these remarkable projects and brought these yachts to life.

Southern Spars would also like to congratulate Neville Crichton for receiving the ‘2012 Legacy Award’ for his instrumental role in the establishment and growth of the New Zealand superyacht industry, for his leading position in the world of the sailboat racing, his generosity of spirit, and his inspiration to others in these fields. Neville has been a continued supporter of Southern Spars over the past 25 years after utilizing Southern rigs on many of his cruising and racing yachts, including the hugely successful Alpha Romeo II campaign.

‘Without Neville Crichton the enormous growth in the superyacht industry in New Zealand… would simply not have happened’ – Ed Dubois.

The first SW 102 DS sailing yacht ALMAGORES II by Southern Wind launched

May 08, 2012

The respected South African builder, Southern Wind, successfully launched and christened its first unit of the brand new SW 102 DS, the sailing yacht Almagores II on Sunday May 6 in Cape Town. Developed by Nauta Design and Farr Yacht Design, the Almagores II superyacht is a spectacular performance cruiser, incorporating the evolution as well as the synthesis of those traits, which have set the supremacy of the shipyard in the 100 footers league. The second unit of the SW 102 series, the luxury yacht Atalante, is scheduled for launch in December 2012.

Nauta Design has developed the concept of the luxury yacht Almagores II in close cooperation with Southern Wind.

Farr Yacht Design’s naval architecture resulted in the development of new water lines, sail plan and appendages, with particular attention to the performance of the Almagores II yacht.

The SW 102 DS superyacht Almagores II combines the successful lay-out already seen on the SW 100 with the advantage of a more modern hull with a remarkable gain in the water line length of 1.35 m. This LWL increase offers significant advantages while sailing in any condition and even steaming, while the aft flatter hull bottom is a promise of higher performances and increased stability especially in reaching conditions.

Nauta has taken advantage of the increased WL and LOA lengths and the additional 21 cm of the maximum beam, to distribute these additional volumes where they were more needed.

The SW 102 yacht Almagores II is available in two versions: DS (Deck saloon) and SL (Streamline). The DS is with no doubt distinguished by the new super-structure, more spacious and bright than the 100 footer, which perfectly matches the sleek and modern lines of the hull.

The SL features the elegant Streamline superstructure profile conceived by Nauta, a kind of seamless “wave” smoothly flowing from the helm stations to the mast. The coachroof can be offered as a main glass rounded wedge laterally covered by non transparent composite stripes. As an alternative, the coachroof can be covered with teak.

The interior lay-out is the typical Southern Wind one: Crew quarters aft, guest area, including 2 double cabins and 1 queen- size bed cabin, amidship and a roomy and secluded owner’s cabin forward the mast.

The crew quarter is exceptionally wide; besides an ample and functional galley and a dedicated navigation desk, it features 3 cabins o one of which can be used as additional Junior guest cabin. Moreover great care was paid into an ergonomic study and into the optimization of spaces. The chef, the hostess/steward and the captain can work simultaneously without interference.

Southern Wind believes that comfort and user-friendly spaces contribute to the satisfaction of both crew and guests.

The owner and guests areas are proportionally functional and comfortable. Social life is encouraged not only by the spacious and stylish saloon but also by the ample guest cockpit and sun bathing area. 5 stars meals up to 10 persons can be served both inside or on deck, if necessary protected from the sun by the big sun-shade or from bad weather by the dodger. Privacy, comfort and luxury details are offered not only in the master cabin, but in the guest cabin as well.

On deck the passage from the aft section to the main companionway, has minor gaps or differences in level than in the SW 100, being therefore not only more comfortable but also safer especially in sailing conditions, as one can easily walk from the aft cockpit forward.

The aft cockpit concentrates most of the maneuvering gear, while the guest cockpit amidship guarantees the absence of nuisance to the passengers while sailing.

The equipment on board will be fitted keeping in mind the long ocean sailing which inspires Southern Wind Blue Water philosophy.

The semi-custom construction of the SW 102 DS yacht Almagores II, leaves the room open to different options for the interiors as well as for the deck lay-out. A retractable keel with a 3.20/4.80 m. stroke is being studied.

Almagores II yacht will complete her sea trials in the Table Bay waters, before leaving, in less of one mounth, South Africa to the Mediterranean. She will be officially presented as a world premiére during the forthcoming Monaco Yacht Show.

Marina Port de Mallorca celebrates the beginning of the high season with a “full-house” BBQ

May 07, 2012

A full-house barbecue has taken place at the Marina Port de Mallorca, hosting captains, crew and harbour employees. Among the guests was Thierry Petit, double bassist of the National Orchestra of Montpellier. Currently mooring at Marina Port de Mallorca, the musician has has taken to the waves in his culture-unifying project “La Contrebasse Voyageuse en Méditerranée” (The Travelling Double Bass in the Mediterranean)

Palma de Mallorca’s most central harbour, Marina Port de Mallorca, celebrated the advent of spring and the start of the high season by treating its customers and friends to a barbecue at which all the harbour’s employees lent a hand by baking cakes, making mojito cocktails and helping to barbecue the meat. The result was a resounding success, drawing lots of guests, as crew and captains remarked at the end of the evening. Marina Port de Mallorca’s aim in holding this event was to start off the new sailing season by including all the harbour’s customers and putting into practice its philosophy of providing captains and crew with an enthusiastic, customer-focussed service.

Among the guests was double bassist Thierry Petit of the National Orchestra of Montpellier. The musician, who has taken to the waves with the project La Contrebasse Voyageuse en Méditerranée (The Travelling Double Bass in the Mediterranean), is currently moored at Marina Port de Mallorca. At each port of call, music will be composed, played by an orchestra and recorded, to create a musical “patchwork”. The Balearic Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Salvador Brotons, is participating in the cross-border project, while the second leg of the voyage is being planned with composers and orchestras in Greece, Lebanon, Egypt and Tunisia.

Marina Port de Mallorca treats its customers as if they were part of one big family, and so strong was the family spirit at the barbecue that the event may well be repeated.

Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology enhances the quality of power aboard luxury yachts Lady Dee and Nassima

May 07, 2012

Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology offers a specialist approach when it comes to issues related to the impact on harmonic distortion in the electrical distribution circuits onboard caused by the modern technologies. Even though the quality of power aboard luxury yachts has never been more significant. Thanks to the modern rectifier technology used in motor drives, UPS systems, better battery charging stations, light dimmers and computers, a significant improvement in comfort levels has been attained.

“Any increase in harmonic distortion will have an influence on sensitive equipment,” explains Henk Brouwer, managing director of Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology in the Netherlands. “By increasing comfort levels you run the risk of reducing the reliability of the electrical circuits. To ensure an energy efficient and reliable electrical circuit, we use an Active Harmonic Filter (AHF) to improve and stabilise the power quality on board.”

By using an AHF, the harmonic distortion created by all the different loads on board is compensated. This filters the harmonics, ensuring a consistent and stable electrical system. And in addition to enhancing reliability, losses due to harmonics are reduced to a minimum.

By enabling the load balancing function, the three phases of the generators onboard are continuously equally loaded. In combination with the power factor improvement, this results in an optimal use of the generator capacity and lower fuel consumption.

Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology advises all clients to install an Active Harmonic Filter as standard onboard yachts. The company is currently fitting systems on several projects worldwide. These include the 49-metre Motor Yacht Nassima and the 47-metre superyacht Lady Dee, both under construction at Acico yachts in the Netherlands.

Venice AC World Series 2012: All eyes turn to Venice

May 07, 2012

Following the Naples AC World Series, the next stop is Venice, with its AC Village as well as team bases taking shape. One of the teams has already started with the first test sailing.

Within a week of the ship containing all of the AC World Series ‘materiel’ arriving in Venice, team bases were sprouting up, the AC Village in the Arsenale was taking shape, the television compound on Lido Island was being erected and the Italian team, Luna Rossa Challenge, had gone for its first sail with both crews.

With just one World Series regatta under its belt in Naples, Luna Rossa is out of contention for the 2011-12 AC World Series title. But that hasn’t made the team any less keen to be at the top of its game performing on home waters. It’s ‘Piranha’ crew, led by Chris Draper, won the Fleet Racing Championship in Naples – a sparkling debut. Now the team is hoping these early practice sessions will pay dividends in Venice.

At the top of the overall leaderboard, ORACLE Racing’s James Sptihill holds the slimmest of leads – one point – over Dean Barker’s Emirates Team New Zealand. Artemis Racing, with an impressive Match Racing win in Naples, has closed the gap in third place.

So it’s all to play for when the Championship Racing starts in Venice on May 17, in the penultimate event in the opening circuit. The 2011-12 AC World Series will then conclude in Newport, Rhode Island, home of the Cup from 1930 to 1987, at the end of June. And preparations are already ramping up there. It’s going to be an exciting few weeks in the 34th America’s Cup.

Venice AC World Series 2012: Taking Shape in the Arsenale

May 07, 2012

The first teams are supposed to sail within this week in the Venice America’s Cup World Series Race Village, which is taking its shape.

Venice AC World´s Series Village

Venice AC World´s Series Village

On Wednesday May 2, the focus was on ACTV. The shipping containers that make up the television compound were delivered to the Lido location where a team was on site to begin the build out, which continues today.

“Everything is on schedule. We had a big day yesterday moving all of the ACTV containers across on a barge to the television compound,” said Peter Ansell, Director of on-shore operations for America’s Cup Race Management. “The next few days we’re going to be focusing on the public areas, setting up the PUMA store, the Louis Vuitton exhibition (Wind and Wings), and getting Club 45 established.

“It’s a stunning venue in many respects and it’s great that we’re able to provide this opportunity to open up the Arsenale to Venetians, many of whom have never had the opportunity to spend time here before.”

In the Arsenale, which will be the hub for the AC World Series, all of the containers for the team bases have been in place for several days, with shore crews for many teams on site completing their base set-ups, and assembling AC45 catamaran platforms and wings.

The first day of sailing for the early birds is officially scheduled for Tuesday, May 8. But ‘dock-talk’ has some of the teams trying to get out earlier.

The City of Venice Invitational Regatta with €50,000 in prize money on offer, takes place on May 12 – 13, before championship racing in the AC World Series Venice from May 17-20, with official practise on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
