As usual, the traditional Ferretti Group Meeting was the occasion for the Group’s Chairman and Founder, Norberto Ferretti, and for the Chief Executive Officer, Giancarlo Galeone for drafting the first preliminary results of the 2010-2011 nautical year. This nautical year has been characterized by a further expansion at an international level and by the launch of innovative models, confirming the great ability of the Ferretti Group to interpret the trends of the nautical market as well as the needs of its customers. With an increasing demand for Made in Italy luxury products, the company is constantly improving its standards of exceptionality, quality and performance, despite the challenging moment at the macroeconomic level.

The preliminary results of the nautical year ended on August, 31st, 2011 show a Value of Production of about 521 million euro, with an increase of +12% compared to approximately 465 million euro on August 31st, 2010. The Order Portfolio as of August, 31st 2011 is approximately 401 million euro, with a increase of +55% compared to 257 million euro as of August, 31st 2010, with a volume of new orders of about 552 million euro, an increase of +27% compared to about 434 million euro of the 2009-2010 nautical year.

During the 2010-2011 nautical year the Ferretti Group has confirmed its strong commitment to international expansion, through a strategy focused towards the local development and marketing growth in areas with strong present and future development opportunities.

In April 2010, the Group signed an agreement with its historic dealer and centre for production, sales, and after-sale service of all the yachts of the brands of the Group for the Brazilian market, Ferretti Group Brasil. The new production plant in the Sao Paolo area was officially inaugurated in June 2011.

With this same perspective, in July 2011, the company signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding with Shandong Heavy Industry Group (“SHIG”) – a Chinese holding, controlling leading companies in the sector of engines, generators and propulsion systems for the creation of a joint venture with the aim of developing an industrial partnership for the design, production and sale of motor yachts for the market of Greater China (China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao) and other emerging markets . This initiative, which focuses on the development of new brands and models – not in competition with the present models of the Ferretti Group’s current portfolio- has the purpose of exploiting synergies starting with the respective technological and industrial skills, and will not determine impacts on the current production set up of the Group, traditionally based in Italy. Moreover, SHIG will evaluate the possibility to make a cash investment into the Group, for the acquisition of a minority shareholding.

As for North America, an area considered as strongly strategic by the Group, the distribution network has been strengthened further with new sales centres established in the North East USA, in Greenwich, CT, Newport, RI and Sag Harbor, NY as well as supporting Allied Marine in maintaining its successful brokerage activities. In the next few months, this process will expand to Michigan and California. The Group will take part in the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, displaying a preview for the continent, the new Custom Line 100’, the yacht which has recently been sold to an American customer as well as other new debut models for the US market including the Ferretti 720 yacht and Riva 86’ Domino motor yacht.

As for market segments, during the 2010-2011 nautical year, Ferretti Group, which ranked first in the 2011 Global Order Book, the most thorough and accurate analysis of the global nautical industry, issued every year by authoritative international nautical magazine ‘Showboats International’, focused on medium and large yachts and on continuous product and process innovation, constantly launching new models and looking for technological solutions to be ahead of market trends.

Continuing on its strategy of constant product innovation, which envisages the launch of 42 new models between 2011 and the end of 2013, in Cannes the Ferretti Group will present:

  • Ferretti 720 by Ferretti Yachts;
  • Pershing 108’ and Pershing 74’ by Pershing;
  • Riva 75’ Venere Super, Rivarama Super, and Riva Iseo by Riva;
  • Itama 45’ by Itama;
  • Custom Line 124’, Custom Line 100’ and Navetta 33 Crescendo by Ferretti Custom Line;
  • Navetta 43#7 ‘Lady Truly’ by CRN.

At the Festival de la Plaisance in Cannes the 200th hull of Aquariva, the elegant 33 foot vessel descending from the legendary Aquarama, will be on display. Representing the revival of the historic brand Riva after it has been acquired by the Group in 2000, Aquariva is a timeless icon of elegance and style.

The Ferretti Group is on a continuous quest for technological solutions in an effort to be ahead of market trends. This search led the Group to further develop the hybrid propulsion system “Zero Emission Mode”, which has been succesfully applied to the new Riva Iseo. The hybrid propulsion and Zero Emissions by means of the ‘Hybrid Propulsion ZEM’ version is particularly suitable for lakes or other areas where cruising is forbidden. This hybrid propulsion system is the result of the R&D activity of AYT (Advanced Yacht Technology), the research and design centre of the Group. This technology was first applied on the Mochi Craft Long Range 23 and was noted as the most advanced “green” yacht at the world level, awarded by the Union Internationale Motonautique. Once again proving to be the most advanced technology in this field, the Group is coping with every day more demanding owners, who are particularly interested in investing in yachts that guarantee the reduction of consumption, emissions, and noise.

“Product culture has always been our DNA and our aim, more than ever, is to focus our energy on model innovation and on the continuous search for new technological and style solutions, in order to be ahead of the new trends of the nautical market at the world level” – declared Norberto Ferretti, Chairman and Founder of the Ferretti Group. “For this reason, I consider presenting in Cannes with an impressive fleet of 29 yachts, with 10 world previews, the best and the most concrete sign of the strength of our Group and of the absolute quality and typical Italian elegance which have always characterized us and resulted in a 43 year commitment to manufacturing our yachts”.

“We underwent a period of major changes, but today we can proudly state that the industrial and market choices made in the last two years by our Group have been confirmed by facts. The Group focused on its core business and became even more international, expanding in the world nautical market and into emerging economies. This has already proved to be the best choice overall. Results show that it has provided and will provide many new opportunities for further developments in future years” – declared Giancarlo Galeone, Chief Executive Officer of the Ferretti Group. “Our goal is to continue on this double and parallel path, focusing and strengthening our brands and being the protagonists of new markets where Ferretti Group symbolizes passion, innovation and excellence”.

Wally launched Maxi racing yacht Wally//Otto

September 07, 2011

World leader in yachting innovation, WALLY, is proud to launch a new sailing yacht Wally//Otto, which marks the beginning of new era for Maxi racing yachts. Wally/Otto superyacht is a state of the art 80ft, One Design racing yacht, with a one of a kind versatile design that intensifies year-round enjoyment and long-term value.

▪ Uncompromising racing performance at the highest levels
▪ Smarter, more realistic racing campaign budgets
▪ Quick conversion to a comfortable day-cruiser
▪ Much greater longevity and value retention

Once again, Wally has created a breakthrough yachting concept with the launch of a completely new idea. The Wally//Otto superyacht is the only One Design Maxi racing fleet. Sailing yacht Otto has been designed to sail with a limited crew and limited sail inventory to minimize campaign costs and maximize enjoyment.

The Otto yacht also features a unique aft ’guest experience’ area where private or charter guests can enjoy the racing in comfort and safety, removed from the operations of the racing crew. When not racing, the Otto can quickly transform into a comfortable and easy to sail ‘day-cruiser’, extending the enjoyment of the boat across the whole season.

As a One Design fleet, the Wally S/Y Otto can expect greater racing longevity. Otto has also been designed with the necessary headroom and bulkhead positions to successfully convert into a spacious Wally cruiser-racer, with salon, galley and three guest cabins.

This unique approach to racing yacht design extends Otto’s life beyond competitive sailing, ensuring greater year-round enjoyment, a longer life and, like all Wally yachts, a much greater residual value.

Speaking at the launch of Wally//Otto superyacht during round four of the FT Wally Grand Prix Series in Porto Cervo, Wally Founder and President, Luca Bassani Antivari said, ”Otto is a new concept; a pure racing yacht which will allow owners to compete at the very highest level alongside the Americas Cup and Olympic standard sailors already competing in the Wally//Class. This intelligent, flexible design dispenses with the ownership challenges normally associated with a traditional ‘pure’ racing yacht.”

Manhattan 53 motor yacht (available to view on stand C040)
The new Manhattan 53 is stylish and versatile, combining all the attributes of a performance motoryacht. Following the unprecedented success of the Manhattan 52, the new Manhattan 53 offers increased space, volume and a fresh approach to the interior décor that brings it up to date with the very latest fabrics and finishes. Sunseeker’s designers have been extremely careful to ensure a similarly optimised blend between interior layout, exterior social areas and overall proportions. The exterior styling is unmistakably Sunseeker, and thanks to the latest design software, use of a full size interior mock-up has allowed every inch of interior space to be optimised to ensure the best possible use of space. Audi MedCup Circuit: Barcelona ready to witness the closest finish

September 06, 2011

Barcelona, the Olympic city of 1992, looks set to witness the closest finish to the Audi MedCup Circuit for four years when the TP52’s of the 52 Series shoot out for the 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit title.

Quantum Racing, skippered by America’s Cup winner Ed Baird (USA), need a solid final regatta if they are to hold off the advances of Italy’s Audi Azzurra Sailing Team and lift the title.

We are really looking forwards to Barcelona. We have a job to do there and are confident we can do it. When we look back to Cartagena our feeling is very much not to panic, if there is nothing particularly broken then we don’t have to worry about trying to fix things, but just to focus on trying to the do the things that we know we do well better.

We have an exceptional team who are used to closing out major titles, like the America’s Cup and World Championships and so I don’t think pressure or confidence will come into it.” Opens Ed Reynolds (USA), Quantum Racing’s project manager, “I think that we have to make sure we are fully optimised for the conditions expected, which might be something like 12-16kts sea breezes with the choppy seas we saw last year. Those conditions I certainly feel are not a weakness for us.”

Audi Azzurra Sailing Team, skippered by Gullermo Parada (ARG) with Vasco Vascotto (ITA) as strategist and Francesco Bruni (ITA) as tactician have proven the most consistent 52 Seriesteam over the second half of this season. Audi Azzurra Sailing Team have just finished second overall at the Region of Murcia-Cartagena Trophy in August after July’s Region of Sardinia Trophy off Cagliari where they also finished runners up. They are the only team to have been on the podium at each and every regatta this year.

The Audi Azzurra Sailing Team crew which last year as Matador finished third overall, only five points shy of Quantum Racing who were second in 2010, show every sign of finishing their season on a high. They could press Quantum Racing right to the wire heading into 2011’sBarcelona finale only 3.5 points behind long time Circuit leaders Quantum Racing.

We will arrive in Barcelona very highly motivated, with a high morale with great support. We know that the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Audi and Roemmers Family members will all be there to support us, and that’s why we want to finish the season in the best possible way. We expect to have a good week.” Offers Guillermo Parada (ARG), Audi Azzurra Sailing Team’s skipper.

Since winning the Cascais Trophy in Portugal the American team Quantum Racing have topped the overall standings after each of the four regattas so far this season but their lead was effectively halved in Murcia last month.

The final regatta of the season, the Conde de Godó – Barcelona Trophy starts in just one week’s time when the battle for the title might even become a three cornered one as the German flagged team on Udo Schuetze’s Container are still only 11.5 points behind the 52 Series Circuit leaders.

The title victory in the 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit is far from over. A good series could easily get back 10 or 15 points of Quantum Racing’s lead.” Says Markus Wieser (GER) skipper-helm of Container, “ It’s all in their hands for sure, but they also didn’t sail so well in the past. We think the hardest competitor to beat will be Bribon again, because they are the fastest boat in light air. Even they might be able to grab the overall trophy. The beat us by 18 points in Cartagena and Quantum Racing by 13.5. So, why not do so again?

Indeed Bribon, racing in the home water of owner Jose Cusi, is far from out of the title race, 18 points off the Circuit lead in fourth place. Recent winners of the Region of Murcia-Cartagena Trophy, they are considered the form team in light to moderate airs.

The schedule for the title shoot out regatta differs slightly from the four preceding events, with the official Practice Race on Monday September 12th and points racing for the 52 Series starting on Tuesday 11th.

As it stands it is certainly not easy to predict which team will be crowned 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit champions.

Historically Barcelona’s Garbi sea breeze is slightly less reliable in September but will usually make an appearance, blowing anywhere between 11 and 16-17kts from around 200 to 210 degrees. The gradient breeze is sometime the brisk Easterly Levante which has marked the weather in the last few days in the Catalonian capital.

Different TP52s have won in each regatta this season and it would not be a surprise to find a fifth boat winning the Conde de Godó – Barcelona Trophy. The fleet is due to be at full strength with the return of Tony Langley’s Gladiator.

In the 40 Series it is not as open. Spain’s Iberdrola Sailing Team start in Barcelona with a lead of 28 points, but they will be racing in a class of six Soto 40’s following the arrival of Toni Guiuand Àlex Laplaza’s new boat www.cruiser-racer.com, which will make its debut on the team’s home waters.

Britain’s Ngoni became the only team other than the Iberdrola Sailing Team to win a regatta this season when they won in Murcia. Tony Buckingham’s crew have designs on the second place which is presently held by Noticia IV.

I really think that after our performance in Murcia that it is do-able. Our main thing will be to try and put boats between us and Noticia IV in as many races as we can, and from that point of view a six boat fleet can only be better for us. Certainly in Cagaliari I felt like Noticia IV was a little quicker in the big breeze at times, but we were certainly fast in Cartagena and go to Barcelona with a lot of confidence. We feel like we have improved at each regatta so look forward to continuing with that.

Said Kevin Sproul (GBR), Ngoni’s skipper who will hand the helm back to owner Buckinghamfor Barcelona.

Portugal’s Bigamist crew return to race in Barcelona and will be sailing onboard XXII, with Star Olympic sailor Afonso Domingos as skipper-helm along with programme owner Pedro Mendonça.

Agustín Zulueta (ESP), Iberdrola Sailing Team’s project manager:

We made several mistakes in Cartagena from which we draw some conclusions:: first of all our sails have suffered a lot throughout the 30 races that we’ve done till now, and some need to be replaced. Secondly the level of this fleet has evened out now which means that if we make mistakes they beat us. So it is very clear to us what we have to do in Barcelona.”

Markus Wieser (GER) skipper-helm of Container (GER):
We worked a lot on our sails after Cartagena especially on the light wind gennaker and built a new A2 on out last slot. We hope we can improve on the light air performance now compared to the last regatta because in general we’re expecting even lighter breezes than in Cartagena.

We should not be too disappointed after Cartagena keeping in mind that this is still our first TP 52 season and most of the other team have much more experience with these boats than us. The season’s opener and Marseille were just great with our boat speed in heavy winds, but we simply couldn’t anticipate the necessary trim and set-up changes for medium to light air quick enough. Let’s say the others learned their lessons better than we did. But we’ll keep going and do the best we can to fighting back in Barcelona.

“The victory in the 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit is far from over. A good series could easily take out 10 or 15 points of Quantum Racing’s lead. Although racing is so tight in this class it always comes down to boat speed. If you are just that little bit too slow you can’t act anymore and deliver your strategy and tactics, you have to then react. And this doesn’t work out well quite often. If you are fast enough, you manage to be in front once, and then the rich are getting richer most of the time.

Jochen Schuemann (GER) skipper-helm of Audi Sailing Team powered by ALL4ONE:
Although we were not that happy with rank four in Cartagena we missed the podium with just a tiny little margin to QUANTUM. This showed that we were on the right track and our victory in Cagliari was not only by luck.”

“We can’t do much about our downwind weakness in medium to strong breeze, because we had used all our slots to build new sails already. Otherwise we certainly would try a different A4. But we are developing a new gennaker which we hope to use at the Worlds in Porto Cervo later the year.”

“Our goal is a podium finish in Barcelona. We know we missed the Circuit podium already but every single race and every single trophy is important to us. The conditions in Barcelona seem to be quite uncertain from very lttle winds with lumpy seas to strong Tramontanta – everything could happen. So you need to strength your general performance and not concentrating on specific conditions.”

“It will be an interesting regatta for the overall win of the season, with QUANTUM, AZZURRA and even CONTAINER still in striking distance.

Tognum present its MTU Series 2000 marine engine in Cannes

September 06, 2011

Tognum will be presenting its state-of-the-art MTU Series 2000 marine engine at ‘Festival de la Plaisance’ – the Cannes boat show taking place from 6-11 September (stand JAS-027 on Albert Edouard Sud jetty). Also featuring at the show will be MTU’s automation and service solutions for the yacht sector.

The Series 2000 M94 marine engine boasts the highest performance values in its class and an improved power-to-weight ratio. An increase of up to 8 percent in power output has been achieved over the previous model. Available in 8, 10, 12 and 16-cylinder versions, the engine covers the 930 to 1,940 kW range at 2,450 rpm.

With respect to fuel consumption at cruising speed and generation of higher charge pressures at lower rpms, turbocharger performance has been enhanced – key to shortening acceleration time on seagoing vessels. On top of that, the unit meets all emissions standards applying to marine engines worldwide and comes automatically equipped with a SOLAS (Safety of Life At Sea) certificate. To ensure that the surface temperature of the engine never exceeds 220°C, the M94 also features double-walled fuel lines and triple-walled, water-cooled turbocharger and exhaust gas lines. That helps keep the temperature in the engine room relatively low, which in turn enhances comfort and safety. The M94 is also an exceptionally quiet engine, boasting extremely low sound pressure levels when idle or at low speeds.

Also featuring in MTU’s tradeshow presentation is ‘Blueline’ – the standard ship automation system for monitoring and control of MTU‘s Series 2000 and 4000 propulsion systems. The system is suitable for different propulsion configurations such as fixed pitch propeller (FPP) or water jets.

Not only its engines, but also its service makes MTU a partner that the customer can count upon. The MTU ValueCare package includes a longer warranty (EPC: Extended Propulsion Coverage), which allows the customer to cover himself financially against unanticipated repairs. Other service offerings include tailor-made maintenance agreements, remote troubleshooting and swift, reliable supply of high-quality, genuine MTU-brand spares.
