Gerard Dijkstra Bestevaer 53ST sailing yacht Bestevaer II by Dykstra Naval Architects and K&M Yachtbuilders

January 24, 2012

Gerard Dijkstra, a world-renowned yacht designer, the Dykstra Naval Architects design company and K&M Yachtbuilders are continuing their intensive collaboration for the development of an MKII of Gerard’s private yacht, the Bestevaer 53ST sailing yacht Bestevaer II. Developments and technology in yacht-building have continued to move on in the 8 years that the Bestevaer II yacht has been around.

As is the case in the automotive industry, it is important to have a detailed look at an existing design in order to find out where improvements can be made and where the market is shifting.

The luxury yacht Bestevaer II was designed as a robust, practical ship with a traditional look, which can easily be operated by a small crew, which requires little maintenance and is suitable for cold regions, and which, of course, has superb sailing features and responds perfectly to the swell.

Gerard Dijkstra, Owner as well as designer, “The design of the pilot cutter has meant that this series of Bestevaers has made this type of yacht popular, not only within the Dykstra firm but also elsewhere.” He continues, “The majority of the Bestevaers that have already been built stand out because of the many nautical miles they cover, mostly to remote areas such as Spitsbergen, Greenland and Patagonia.”

Over the past few years K&M has built dozens of 45-56 feet yachts inspired by the Bestevaer 53ST, all of which have a pilot cutter (straight bow, abbreviated as ST). The owners of these yachts (e.g. the owners of a 49ST, a 53ST, a 55ST and the owner of a 53ST and a 45ST) have also been involved in the preliminary investigation into what is good about the ship and what could be improved.

In addition to the Bestevaer ST ships, Dykstra Naval Architects has designed Pilot Cutter ships such as the Christoffels Lighthouse, the super yacht Hetairos (ex Panamax) and the sailing yacht Kamaxitha.

Pure Superyacht Refit completes 2011 with a Success

January 24, 2012

Pure Superyacht Refit, the specialist independent refit management company situated in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, finished 2011 on a high note thanks to the successful completion of a number of exciting superyacht projects, and the return of previous clients for refit work over the winter period.

The 43m CMN motor yacht Paramour

The major winter refit of the 43m CMN motor yacht Paramour

As a result, the team at Pure, lead by former professional skipper and project manager, Nic Clarke is in a buoyant mood, and is looking ahead to various potential projects, ranging from full paint works to major interior refurbishments and serious engineering refits.

In July 2011, the arrival of a new 77m Feadship superyacht, for some finishing works, was promptly followed by 10 year ABS survey, paint, interior and teak works to a 40m Heesen yacht. Then, in September, 80m Motor Yacht took her berth for complete paint refinish including colour change, and Lloyds 5 year survey. She will remain at the STP (Servicios Técnicos Portuarios) facility, where Pure is based, for a total of six months while the work is completed.

The return of two previous clients, a 47m Feadship and a 60m Motor Yacht led Pure onto the major winter project of the 43m CMN motor yacht Paramour, which is undergoing a complete engineering refit and face lift. Scheduled for completion in the spring, works to the super yacht Paramour include a hull plating extension, construction of new swim platform extension, beach club, full re-design of sun deck layout, including built-in Jacuzzi and sun lounging area, two artistically finished bars and seating for twelve guests.

Additional to that, a 10-year Lloyds survey, audiovisual upgrade, electrical fittings and services with new shore power converters and seamless transfer, new galley layout and appliances will be carried out. The work will conclude with the replacing of three teak decks and complete superstructure paint, to complement the full hull painting carried out the previous winter. The work is intended to keep this highly desirable and successful charter vessel in pristine condition for the coming season.

Nic Clarke, Managing Director of Pure Superyacht Refit, said, “We are very optimistic about the coming refits seasons and, yes, we have some good potentials. However, as all of us in the industry have experienced, until the clients actually arrive and works start there is no certainty, so we are keen to discuss any potential projects with interested parties.”

During the busy winter season, the Pure team has also recently moved offices within the STP facility in the heart of Palma de Mallorca, to the newly refurbished Global building. He continued, “Moving to the new office has helped us deliver a more efficient and productive service to our clients”.

MOMBASA
Due to its strategically important position, the town of Mombasa has been continually fought over by various trading nations through its history. The Arab influence on Mombasa has been significant. Arab traders from the Persian Gulf sailed and traded along the Kenyan coast as early as the first century. Mombasa and Lamu still exhibit the influence of Arab culture and architecture today.

Mombasa, Kenya

Mombasa, Kenya

In 1498, Portuguese explorer, Vasco De Gama landed on the shores of Mombasa. It became Portugal’s main trading centre along the East Coast of Africa and this led to the construction of a monumental fort in 1593 that still stands today, known as Fort Jesus. The trading of spices, cotton and coffee, which were cultivated and grown in the rich fertile soils of the town’s farms, made Mombasa a popular trading port for seafarers.

Portugal’s reign over Mombasa lasted approximately 200 years, after which they were overthrown by the Omani Arabs. The sultan of Zanzibar leased the town to the British and they formally took control of Mombasa in 1895. The British took strides to establish control of this strategically important port, and completed a railway line in the early 1900’s from Mombasa to Uganda. The British rule in Kenya officially ended when Kenya finally gained its hard-fought independence on the 12th December 1963.

THE HISTORIC FORT JESUS
Built by the Portuguese in 1593, the fort sits on a ridge of coral near the entrance of the old harbour. At the time of construction, there were colonies of Portuguese living on the eastern coast of Kenya and the fort was intended to protect them. Turkish raids during the late 1500s prompted this need for more protection.

The Historic Fort Jesus

The Historic Fort Jesus

Elements of Portuguese architecture are still clearly visible in the ancient fort, even though it has undergone many additions and changes over the centuries. Given its age, the buildings have weathered well with much of the lower walls built from the local coral. The fort was designed by Portuguese architect Joao Batista Cairato, and covers an area approximately 2 acres in size.

Fort Jesus was used as a military fortification for much of its history, until the annexation of the territory by the British in 1895. They refurbished the fort, using it as a prison. Its importance as a historical site was recognized
in 1958 when the area was declared an official National Park.
