Set to run in Nansha, Guangzhou, on October 17 and 18, the 2014 China Yachting Conference, organized as response to the increasing demand for professional marine knowledge in swiftly developing China market, and catering for the needs of fast growing yachting ecosystem in the region, will host a number of renowned experts, representing the most developed yachting cultures of the world. Today, the oranizers are pleased to present Mr. Andrew Chapman, Chairman of Marina Industry Association (MIA), Australia and Mr. Dennis Nixon, Professor, Director of Rhode Island Sea Grant, University of Rhode Island, USA.

Bio: Andrew is currently the Chairman of the Marina Industries Association, Australia (MIA) and has been the Chairman of the MIAA Education Committee overseeing the development of the education system now being implemented through Asia.  He is a Certified Marina Manager #115. Andrew is also the CEO and Marina Manager of The Marina Hindmarsh Island, a multi-faceted waterfront residential marina estate at the mouth of the Murray River in South Australia.   Andrew is also the Chairman of Gulf Marina Management Pty Ltd International Design and Management Consultancy which specializes in marina audits and planning requirements to assist developers with new waterfront developments and marina proposals.  With over 30 years’ experience in the marina industry Andrew is currently working on projects in Asia and Australia that will have mooring facilities for over 5000 vessels when completed. Andrew specialises in Environmental aspects of Marinas operating under ISO14001 in Australia. Andrew has recently commenced facilitating insurance cover for yachts in China and is unrolling specialist Marina Operators Insurance packages to assist Chinese Marina Managers in line with International products and liability standards.

Bio: Professor of Marine Affairs Dennis Nixon has served as the Director of the Rhode Island Sea Grant Program since July 2013.  In that role, he leads a multi-million dollar research and education program devoted to using scientific knowledge to improve the management of Rhode Island’s coastal waters.  Prior to that, he served for four years as the Associate Dean for Research and Administration at the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island, where he was responsible for the administration of the 200+ acre campus, pier, and the 185’ Research Vessel Endeavor.  He served the previous 8 years as the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the College of the Environment and Life Sciences, also at the University of Rhode Island.   He has been a faculty member at the University of Rhode Island for the past 37 years, teaching courses in the area of marine and coastal law. He is particularly proud of the thousands of former students now working in marine industries, government, law and science.

A marine lawyer by training, he is a member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States and the Rhode Island Bar. He is the Secretary and General Counsel for the Point Club, a fishing vessel insurance cooperative he helped found over 20 years ago. He is one of the three founders of the International Marina Institute, which provides educational programs and certification for professionals in the marine industry around the world. Under a grant from the National Science Foundation, he is also the legal advisor and risk manager for the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System, and has been providing advice to all of the US academic research vessel fleet for the past 27 years. He has lectured on marine law topics in 27 states and 26 countries on 6 continents. He is the author of over 50 articles and the casebook Marine and Coastal Law, first published in 1994 and released in a second edition in 2010.

Professor Nixon earned his Bachelor’s degree in history at Xavier University, his law degree at the University of Cincinnati, a Master of Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island, a Certificate on International Institutions at the University of Geneva, and a Certificate in Ocean Law from Harvard Law School. He is an avid sailor on vessels of all sizes, and races his own boat weekly on Narragansett Bay.
