The Chinese shipyard Cheoy Lee has launched a new 23 meter (76ft) motor yacht Alpha 76´ Express, with the exterior designed by Michael Peters Yacht Design and the interior by Luiz de Basto Designs. Alpha 76´ Express superyacht is an avant-garde, elegant and technologically advanced yacht offering many design elements and features new to this class of yachts.

The concept for the luxury yacht Alpha 76´ Express was for a fast contemporary yacht with global appeal. Unique, aggressive styling and a modern hull design are married to state of the art composite construction to produce a yacht that is both fast and seaworthy. Exterior features include al-fresco dining, sunbeds, aft deck Spa Pool and an extra-large swim platform. Every area of the deck is utilized from bow to stern, giving one of the largest entertainment areas in the 70s’ class, complete with a full sized yacht tender in the stern garage.

The hull design is a moderate ‘V’ planning form comprising convex forward sections for shock abatement and dryness, with a 17.5 degree aft running surface for overall efficiency and tracking in a seaway.  This Michael Peters Yacht Design hull form is well-tested and proven on hundreds of yachts up to and beyond 40 knots. More than just looking fast at the dock, the super yacht Alpha 76′ Express will prove to run with the best in any sea. “We bring a bit of our racing heritage and 15 World Championships to every boat we design”.

Right from the outset, Luiz de Basto Designs specified that the interior of the Alpha 76’ yacht should be one of the more sophisticated in this very competitive segment of the market. The quality of materials and finishes should be self-evident. For this reason Luiz de Basto designed an interior that is practical. Starting with overall space planning, the Cheoy Lee Alpha 76´ superyacht gives the feeling of a much larger yacht.

The integration between the main salon and helm on one level, and the galley and dinette on a lower level is unique in its openness. The helm seat stands in the center of the yacht, a perfect location for visibility even under difficult weather conditions, and the space provides a wonderful and comfortable stage for entertainment on board.

Down below, the owner’s stateroom amidships assures full beam, natural light and wonderful views to the outside through the oversized windows. The choice of materials, figured anigree wood for the wall panels, framed by stitched leather and polished metal trim creates a calm and relaxed feeling for a modern and elegant ambiance. The use of modern and innovative materials, such as the partition to the bathroom, a combination of wood and resin, and classic in its composition and balance. Every detail was studied to provide not only full function and ergonomic compliance but also beauty, such as the air-conditioned vents integrated in the ceiling panels along with the light fixtures inside an undulating pattern.

Every door is clad in stitched leather as are the nightstands and cabinets. The choice of the colors and the luxurious fittings assures a graceful blend of contemporary refinement.

Panoramic windows couple with a large, powered sunroof to flood the salon in natural light. In combination with the airy layout, this leaves occupants basking in the sensation of open space. This feeling is further enhanced by salon aft doors that disappear, allowing a total integration with the aft deck, and leaving a fully fitted cocktail bar as a central attraction.

The custom-made helm seat is carefully designed for style and comfort, with built-in controls on the armrest and easy access to latest generation electronic controls.

All Cheoy Lee hulls, and now the 23m Alpha 76’ yacht, are monocoque constructed, a technique used in aircraft construction, which enables all structural components to bond to the hull to work together to significantly increase hull strength, integrity and “work as one”. The monocoque technique allows virtually all of the stress that the yacht is subjected to during its operation to be spread out throughout the entire hull rather than limited to one specific area. This greatly increases the overall integrity of the yacht.

As composite materials have become more sophisticated the yard early on recognized the need for the highest degree of structural engineering and turned to the marine business of Gurit, to enable them to remain at the forefront of fiberglass construction. Gurit carefully calculates all structural components, and develops a specific layup schedule and structure for the specific needs of each component, in order to meet ISO 12215 Category A guidelines. Resin types, structural reinforcements and core materials are carefully evaluated and selected for peak performance before any construction begins.

One outstanding example of this customized construction is the large hull side window in the luxury yacht Alpha 76’. To meet the stringent requirements of the ISO rules for structure and window glass, the window requires a horizontal stringer. Gurit engineers optimized this stringer in carbon fiber unidirectional reinforcements to make it as small as possible. They then melded it into the rest of the structure to ensure its strength and minimize stress concentrations with minimal obstruction to the view.

This attention to detail creates the highest structural integrity throughout the Alpha 76’ superyacht. Gurit’s engineers provide continuous collaboration on processes such as sequencing of laminates to enhance buildability while still maintaining structural integrity.
