In line with other business agreements signed since the arrival of Eric de Saintdo as chairman of the executive board, the French group is pursuing its development strategy and announces a partnership with the Cerri – Gruppo Baglietto shipyards, recently acquired by SIAS, Italy’s second largest highway maintenance and management group, quoted on the stock exchange, headed by the industrialist Beniamino Gavio.

Sharing the Same Values and Passion

The Rodriguez Group and Cerri—Gruppo Baglietto: two major players, whose successes—particularly in the Open range of yachts—have marked the luxury yachting world for years. Two prestigious names that today are bringing together their know-how, passion, and commitment to excellence round a common objective: the design and building of ranges of fast yachts that meet the highest standards in design and performance.

A Range Driven to Evolve to Meet All Desires

Starting 2012, an 86’ and a 102’ composite yachts from the Cerri – Gruppo Baglietto shipyards, are going to be filling out the range of fast sportfly yachts distributed by the Rodriguez Group.

In 2013, these yachts will grow to 90’ and 110’. They will benefit from the contribution of the most important international designers, combined with the knowledge and standards of the Rodriguez Group teams, and offer optimized capacity for even greater levels of performance.

And for 2014, a 130’ yacht has already been announced, presenting itself as one of the fastest as well as largest Opens of the world fleet.

All of these units will be distributed worldwide exclusively by the Rodriguez Group.

First-Rate Partners

Passionate about yachts, the company director Carlo Cerri created the motor yacht Cerri 28’ in 1997. Her success lies in the extreme attention paid to detail and especially her remarkable spaciousness given the size of the yacht.

After the launch of the 52’ yacht in 1999 and then the 40’ yacht in 2001, the Cerri shipyard went even further and created in 2002 the Cerri 86’ superyacht, combining sporty lines, comfort, innovations and technical performance.

The Cerri and Baglietto shipyards were recently acquired by the Italian industrialist Beniamino Gavio, president of the SIAS group (Societa Iniziative Autostradali e Servizi), Italy’s number two highway maintenance and management group (managing nearly 18% of the Italy’s highway network) and a major player in construction, transport, logistics and shipyards. Already very involved in the world of yachting, Beniamino Gavio finds in the Rodriguez Group a first-rate partner for expanding into the world of luxury yachting.

More than a Partnership, a Unique Alliance

The combination of the expertise of Cerri – Gruppo Baglietto with the Rodriguez Group, sharing the same policy of customer satisfaction, promises to make from this alliance a definitive new player in the market.

Totally involved from the design stage, the Rodriguez Group offers each project the benefit of its perfect awareness of the needs and wishes of an increasingly demanding clientele, as much in terms of design and technical performance, as in decoration and, naturally, customer support.

By combining the financial strength of the Gavio group, the expertise of the Italian shipyard Cerri, acclaimed for its experience and policy of service unique in the market, the Rodriguez Group is confirming its development strategy and role as a major player in luxury yachting.

High Performance Yacht Design Conference, 12 – 14 March 2012, Auckland

February 16, 2012

The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (NZ), New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and the University of Auckland will host the 4th High Performance Yacht Design Conference from 12 – 14 March 2012 at the Maritime Museum, Viaduct Harbour, Auckland, New Zealand.  The conference with coincide with the Volvo Ocean race – Auckland stopover.

High Performance Yacht Design Conference, 12 - 14 March 2012, Auckland

With the Volvo Ocean Race yachts in town and AC45 catamarans training on the harbour this summer, Auckland, New Zealand is also playing host to an international group of scientists, designers and academics focused on what makes them go fast now – and how to make them go even faster in the future. The science of achieving speed under sail is at the heart of the fourth High Performance Yacht Design Conference from March 12 to 14 2012.

As the state of the art leaps forward with record-shattering circumnavigations and America’s Cup yachts capable of 35 knots under giant wings, the conference will bring together more than 100 international delegates and research experts across a wide range of disciplines from materials and structures to aero- and hydrodynamics.

Organised under the auspices of The Royal Institute of Naval Architects (NZ) and the University of Auckland, the conference will take place at the Maritime Museum in the Viaduct Harbour – where the Volvo Ocean Race fleet will be berthed.

For the first time, the conference will include a public session (on Monday, March 12), which will focus on the Volvo Ocean Race and will include a panel of skippers, competitors and designers talking about the current race and the performance aspects of these highly powerful canting-keel yachts.

“In some respects, we are approaching a point where performance may exceed human endurance on these long offshore races,” says conference chairman, David Le Pelley from the University of Auckland Yacht Research Unit. “These yachts are quite extreme and the demands on crew are enormous. In the pressure of competition, skippers have to make tough decisions about how close to the edge they can go before they start risking not just the boats, but the safety of their crew.”

Among the panel will be Chris Nicholson, skipper of the New Zealand CAMPER entry, Mike Sanderson, a previous winner of the race and current skipper of the Chinese Sanya team, Simon Fisher from the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team, Tony Mutter from the American PUMA crew along with technical experts Ian Campbell of the Wolfson Unit at Southampton University and Giovanni Belgrano, a world expert on composite structures.

Campbell and Belgrano will also deliver keynote addresses in their respective fields, along with Dr Len Imas, an international authority in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) from the Stevens Institute of Technology in the USA.

With Belgrano and Imas both working on the Emirates Team New Zealand America’s Cup programme, much of their current attention will be on the design and development of the extraordinary new class of 72ft catamarans propelled by highly efficient articulating wings, which will debut in San Francisco next year.

The advent of wings is an exciting new field for high performance sailing, but they do not mean the demise of soft sails. Intensive research and development continues to take place in this area.

“Despite the huge resources that have gone into sail design programmes over the course of high profile America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race campaigns, there is still much to learn,” says Le Pelley, who will present a paper on aerodynamic force deduction techniques.

To offset the costs and practical difficulties involved in full-scale on-the-water testing, big advances have been made in computer modeling and CFD programs. While these have improved dramatically, the ultimate goal of perfectly dependable computer simulation and performance prediction design tools remains a long way off. “There will always be a place for experimental and numerical testing,” says Le Pelley.

And, he acknowledges, amidst all the science, there is also even still a place for some art and old-fashioned eyeballing in yacht design.

This is the fourth High Performance Yacht Design Conference to take place in New Zealand. The first was in 2002 during the lead-up to the America’s Cup.

The conferences have achieved a high reputation as a forum for some of the leading experts in various fields of yacht design and form an important part of New Zealand’s standing as a world leader in the marine industry.

VSY – Viareggio Superyachts moves towards the Oriental market

February 15, 2012

The Italian shipyard, Viareggio Superyachts (VSY) has recently launched its new website in Chinese, confirming its definitive move towards the Oriental market. This will permit its values and philosophy to be well-known and appreciated all over China, a country featuring growing market potential. Following the great success of the 62m motor yacht Candyscape II and the Roma superyacht, the yard is now busy completing its next two spectacular vessels: a 72-metre flagship scheduled for the 2012 season, and a 64-metre vessel at present awaiting the discerning client for completion in 2013.

Thus Chinese viewers with ever-growing interest in the yachting world and in the ´Made in Italy´ top style and quality, will now be able to admire VSY’s output in Viareggio for themselves: their first 62m motor yacht Candyscape II, winner of prestigious international awards, and her sister-ship super yacht RoMa, seen in all her splendour under the Caribbean sun in a beautiful yacht charter destination – Antigua.

They can also take a virtual stroll around the yard and see VSY’s latest buildings in various stages of construction: the 72-metre yacht Stella Maris due for delivery in 2012 and the 64m luxury yacht Duchess of Tuscany. Moreover, viewers can keep abreast of VSY events and activities by clicking on to the News section of the website. This is continually updated, with an attentive eye to ecological questions – a top priority for VSY – and other matters of interest.

VSY – Viareggio Superyachts
The difference

Extreme avant-garde technology, maniacal attention to detail, timeless design, total fulfillment of the customer’s wishes, real environmental protection, high respect for the workforce health and safety: this is the essence of VSY-Viareggio Superyachts’ philosophy of work on all fronts. Since 2004 the shipyard based in Italy’s focal yacht building area, Viareggio, has been engaged in building mega-yachts of over 60 metres and is by now widely recognized as builders of the highest calibre – already winning prestigious international awards with their first 62m Candyscape II superyacht.

At VSY the best expression of luxury and comfort is however achieved in the respect of the marine environment on all fronts, obtaining strict and prestigious Certifications such as the RINA Green Star Plus Gold, ABS ES (Environment Safety) and Lloyd’s EP (Environmental Protection).

The long list of features and care they put into their Total Eco-Yachts is impressive:
- wide use of recyclable materials;
- redundancy also for the system of water treatment able to produce biologically transparent and odorless discharges running on 2 units;
- electric auxiliary engines for use in harbor and wherever it is advisable to avoid running of the main engine, resulting in a vastly reduced environmental impact, especially in terms of noise;
- a Green Anchoring system to station the yacht by dynamic positioning in those areas where traditional anchoring is forbidden because potentially damaging, for example, to coral reefs and Scandinavian fjords;
- installation of last generation particle filters for the highest possible smoke reduction in the exhaust system;
- recycling of the heat from the generator exhausts to produce hot water on board;
- study and definition of an eco-productive maintenance system for continuous integrated monitoring (extended to post-delivery) of the eco-systems and appliances installed, providing also a dedicated ergonomic training software platform for the yachts.

This results in a simple but effective formula: Maximum Efficiency on Minimum Energy – with Limited Damage to the eco-system. All of this is in pursuit of VSY’S essential mission: to produce a few but exclusive super-yachts, totally custom-built, innovative and technologically superlative. Simply unique yachts which fully embrace the Yard’s Eco Green vision, introducing the new exclusive concept of “deeper luxury”.

2012 Governor’s Cup – Andrew Weir Yacht Management and the RMS St.Helena provide support

February 14, 2012

Andrew Weir Yacht Management and the RMS St.Helena are once again organising the transportation of yachts and arranging berths for the competitors of the 2012 Governor’s Cup.

2012 Governor’s Cup - Andrew Weir Yacht Management and the RMS St.Helena provide support

2012 Governor’s Cup - Andrew Weir Yacht Management and the RMS St.Helena provide support

The Governor’s Cup is a one-way handicap race between Cape Town and St. Helena held every two years, which is open to yachts of any size and growing in popularity every year.  This year’s race will begin in Cape Town on Saturday 22nd December and while being a chase across the South Atlantic, the accent is on fun and camaraderie and once the destination has been reached, the competitors can enjoy an experience-filled stay on the rugged and beautiful island, St.Helena.

“Only a week after announcing the race details, we have thirteen yachts booked for the return trip to Cape Town on the RMS St Helena and we have a list of 33 confirmed or interested owners. Berths for yachts and passengers on the RMS are being taken up rapidly, so it looks as though this will be another great race to the little Island, considered to be the remotest on the planet” commented Billy Leisegang, Manager at The False Bay Yacht Club.

“Some yachts choose to continue their cruise to other destinations but the beauty of this race is that the rest of the sailors have a choice – either sail back to the Cape or return reclining in the comfort of a deckchair sipping cocktails on board the affordable, yet luxurious 7000 ton passenger/cargo ship, the RMS St. Helena” commented Daniel Taylor of Andrew Weir Yacht Management.

“Andrew Weir is the only shipping company who can arrange transport for yachts to and from St Helena itself, which can be arranged in both our London and Cape Town offices.  Our Cape Town office manager Claude Amman skippered the winning entry in the 2006 Governor’s Cup, which was made up of crew members from the RMS St Helena. So we have direct experience of the race itself!” added Taylor.

Entries range from serious racing boats to cruising boats crewed by families and friends.

What makes the race unique is that families and supporters of the sailors can enjoy a trip to the island on the RMS St Helena, meet up with the contestants, have a fascinating holiday and then all return home on the RMS St. Helena – with the yacht on board as well!

Those family and supporters lucky enough to sail on the RMS St.Helena will experience a nautical Christmas on board the ship with The RMS is due back in Cape Town on Wednesday 16th January 2013.

NEW 61 Bahama Bay motor yacht by Vicem Yachts

February 13, 2012

The new 61 Bahama Bay motor yacht by Vicem Yachts will make its World Premiere at the Tuyap Istanbul Boat Show 2012 which runs from 18-25th of February 2012. The Vicem 61 Bahama Bay yacht merges Vicem classic Down East styling with the latest cutting edge technologies of Volvo IPS Drives. The Vicem 61BB motor yacht boasts some new twists to a beloved classic style motor yacht, and this the second time for any Vicem model (first one was the Bahama Bay 54) with the IPS Drive system.

Layout of the NEW 61 Bahama Bay motor yacht by Vicem Yachts

The new Bahama Bay 61 motor yacht (BB61) and Bahama Bay line Principal facts

“The Bahama Bay 61 yacht combines all of the great attributes of the Vicem Classic line, including the wonderful character of the cold-molded mahogany construction, with the modern advantages of the Volvo IPS drive. The result is a wonderful +20knots cruiser with outstanding manoeuvrability, excellent efficiency, and a 30knots top speed. Furthermore, the specially designed exterior differentiates it from the Vicem Classic Line and provides for a more rakish profile, a fully covered cockpit and increased interior natural lighting thanks to the new large oval side-windows in the master cabin and the kitchen. The interior layout is also unique, with a very spacious midship master cabin, a guest cabin with twin beds, and a very private and roomy VIP towards the bow. It is really a very harmonious boat” – refers Antonio Caviglia Vicem of Europe Sales Director.

The motor yacht 61BB is part of the Bahama Bay series, a line of boats designed and built specifically for Volvo Penta’s IPS system. The Vicem Bahama Bay range is completed with the 55 and 58. The Bahama Bays – similar in appearance to the Vicem’s Classic Line – have less curve in the sheer line, no varnished-teak hand and toe rails above deck and an hardtop that extends all the way aft to cover the teak-laden cockpit. The Bahama Bay line is made for more Mediterranean and tropical climates too. Vicem loves to present a classic look and profile without all the classic maintenance, to make it stand up better to the harsher effects of the sun. Dave Mallach Vicem US Director of Sales refers: “Here in the United States we are quite excited by the splash of the latest Bahama Bay model. Our American clients are very focused on large, mid-ship master cabins. The BB61 achieves that better than any comparably sized yacht I have seen. When you couple with that increasingly popular Pod Drive system, it is a complete winner for us”.

Interiors & craftsmanship

The interiors are still classic Vicem – ample social and living accommodations with amenities, sophisticated use of Khaya, Ducia and Wengué mahogany and African woods, Vicem’s hallmark handcrafted artistry and quality craftsmanship. Vicem’s creative use of the space saving (originated from the use of the IPS drive) provides an unmatched layout. Very few three cabin 61 footer-yacht allow a mid-ship master cabin. None allows a king-sized walk around bed! BB61 does and still leaves ample room for an en-suite head and separate shower. It’s the graceful merger of form and function. Once again what Vicem does best.

Other features not yet seen on other current Vicem models include its “all-white” exterior paint, and an extended hard top that covers the entire cockpit. The modern look of the interior design stands apart from traditional Down East styling, and from Vicem’s Classic line, thanks to the inspired work of Hakki Koroglu, a noted architect based in Miami, Florida still owner of a BB54 and Vicem real lover! Koroglu gave a design support for exterior look of his old 54 Bahama Bay and all new 61BB.

It’s all about details

When in the master stateroom – for example – while checking out the TV. Its flatscreen is inset inside the mahogany cabinetry, with a perfectly placed hand insert for accessing the control buttons and the remote sensor. Vicem carpenters take hours to sand and shape this one little part so that it looks seamless and flawless. If you extrapolate that radical attention to all details and apply it to the entire boat, impassioned boaters can understand what is 61BB for Vicem.

The cold molded method

The building technique used to create the new 61BB motor yacht is the same used for all Vicem Vintage Line (classic/flybridge 52’ to 75’ – cruiser 78, 92 and 107): the cold molded process. A millenary, unique construction technique which embodies all the construction methods of the Turkish historical marine tradition; a modern procedure different from traditional boat building. Based on engineered wood construction, cold-molding uses laminated mahogany (coming from managed forests) and a specific formulated epoxy resin to create the hull, decks and principal superstructures. This results in a stronger and quieter vessel with a smoother ride, with natural insulation from heat/cold, noise, vibration and humidity.

Feadship at the 2012 Dubai International Boat Show

February 13, 2012

Feadship will be attending the Dubai International Boat Show 2012. The event, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary, is expected to be bigger and better than ever, with thousands of visitors expected to come to the boat show between 13 and 17 March. 2012 Dubai International Boat Show

2012 Dubai International Boat Show

Feadship has a long and distinguished history of serving clients in the Middle East that dates back to Persian royalty in the 1930s. Since then, the superyacht builder Feadship has built 25 yachts for Middle East owners, the majority being for presidential or royal families. Launched in 1978 for Saudi clients, the 64.64m motor yacht Al Riyadh was the largest Feadship in the fleet for almost a quarter of a century until the launch of the 65m superyacht Wedge Too – also for owners from the Middle East.

The fast pace of development in the world of superyachts is illustrated by the fact that Feadship’s current order book includes the first Feadship megayacht to break the 100-metre barrier, as well as various other projects ranging from 45 to 99 metres . This impressive 100m + superyacht project by Feadship will be the largest yacht built to date in the Netherlands and the first to comply with the recently published Passenger Yacht Code regulations (PYC13-36) for yachts of this size carrying up to 36 passengers.

Each sets a new standard of excellence in its own right.

“At Feadship, custom still carries its original, pure meaning,” says Francis Vermeer, head of marketing. “We are your first port of call for a personal superyacht that is truly tailored to your individual requirements. Our custom designs are created from scratch, and many Feadships have been inspired by clients from the Middle East region and there are no holds barred on their imagination.”

The team at Feadship would be pleased to make private appointments in advance, either at the show or elsewhere during the show dates.
